Alright.....a couple of things first. I am not even a 100% sure if this is the same guy so if I am wrong, I'll take this down asap (and sorry Tate in advance). And I know there is a memoriam section but I feel like this has to be on here first cause this guy has been around probably longer than me.
Just saw this on Jack Curtin's IG stories. Apparently he died from a car hitting him when he was cycling.

God, I hope not. BGT is a legend and genuinely nice to talk to on here. A real dark day for this site if true.
Roll Forever

Fuck, huge bummer :( RIP PAL
-
Fuck dude, that’s terrible news RIP Tate.
-
wow - RIP if this is BGT
-
RIP to a legend
-
RIP PAL
-
Wow, this one hits hard. RIP Tate.
-
Tate was a guy on here that never talked shit at all. Don't get me wrong, I do love shit talkers but it's nice everyone doesn't have to be that cliché Slap poster on here. For me, his name is up there with the likes of Child Of The Ghetto and The Gipper.
Article says he was 37 years old. Waaaaaay to young to go out. Respect to him for all the years he has been on here...even if it was just posting shoes.
-
RIP to a real one
-
RIP
-
Damn. Dude was always friendly and helping people with sizing info in the NB# thread. :'( RIP
-
damn man :'(
-
damn, this is sad. dude was an integral part of the main reason a lot of us come on this site, the shoes & gear section. i was always jealous when he'd post all the free gear he got hooked up with, but i think the amount of free shoes he got was proof of how cool he was. RIP TATE.
also FUCK CARS, i hope the driver gets punished, severely.
-
Damn, such a fucking bummer! Shoes and Gear will never be the same without BGT.
Much love and respect.
RIP TO A REAL ONE!
-
For the love of fucking god, please slow down and pay attention to the road.
-
Nahhh. I don’t want this to be true. Dude was literally the nicest person on here . He single handedly ran the shoe sections on here for years and gave thoughtful input on shoes and probably kept a lot of us skating longer with his love cupsoles. RIP tate if true . Your presence will be sorely missed . A true PAL
-
I'm really hoping this isn't true. We are really going to miss your presence Bubblegum Tate. Rest in peace
-
Is this our Tate? Sad regardless, but much more personal if so.
What fucking bummer this year had been regarding this stuff.
RIP brother.
-
Rest in peace :(
-
RIP slap hall of famer for sure
-
fuck man :(... he basically carried the shoes & gear section for such a long time on here.
RIP to one of the Slap GOATS and condolences to his friends and family.
-
Did anyone on here know him personally and can confirm that is indeed him?
-
Fuck. RIP, Man.
-
What a bummer if true. RIP Tate and condolences to friends and family. Also fuck cars for real!
-
Gone way too soon.
BGT is a fixture of Slap. Shoes and Gear guru. Felt like I knew him in some way seeing his posts on here for so long.
-
For the love of fucking god, please slow down and pay attention to the road.
I just saw a video about the accident and it said both car and cyclist were going north bound so essentially he got hit from behind I guess. The road he was riding has no turns and is pretty open with a bike lanes on both sides. Maybe it’s a hidden street where people tend to speed and I saw a lot of doughnut tire marks at intersections. Who knows but he did die at the scene.
Also to note, I think he works at Thrasher, Hella Clips and Atlas when they started. Seems like he did what he loved which is more than what I can say.
-
I really hope this isn’t true, but RIP to one of the nicest blokes ive ever chatted to in this place. He went out of his way to help me a few years back when he really didn’t have to. Hall of famer for sure.
-
came here to share the saddest news i never thought i'd ever have to post but here we are. thank you @Fongstarr. for starting this one.
our fucking LEGEND of a pal is no longer with us. this news is fucking rocking me all morning and all the homies he's made during his time here in SF, the peninsula, bay area and beyond. thank you everyone for all the love you're giving him right now.
REST IN PEACE, BUBBLEGUMTATE, LESTER, LOAF <3333

Wow I had no idea Loaf posted on Slap. It sort of makes sense considering how much he knew about skating and how interested he was in it. Loaf was a local at Shoreview skatepark in San Mateo and I spent many afternoons after school skating and shooting the shit with him there while I was growing up. As park locals filtered in and out over the years Loaf stuck around, his welcoming and fun-loving attitude as well as his seniority (the dude really knew his shit and it was easy to tell when talking to him, also he could do just about anything within reason on the curb at the park and could also do a whole lot of stuff on the higher obstacles like the ledges and the flatbar) maintained his status as a central facet of the local skate scene. I'll miss him dearly. I shot the photo of him that Thrasher posted on their story at a skate jam hosted by Atlas skateshop at Shoreview in April 2018. I found out Lester had passed when I woke up to Tony Vitello in my DMs asking me to email him the photo, which felt weird.

Did anyone on here know him personally and can confirm that is indeed him?
I have gotten confirmation from a mutual friend of ours that Lester was indeed BGT
-
RIP Bubblegum Tate.
Aside from the sneaks, I remember him having worked for Street Corner and being the Think/City/Venture/Hubba connect back in the day if I’m not mistaken.

Yeah was always amazed by his ability to take teasing in stride and never have to fire back.
-
This one fucked me up. We’d text back and forth about shoes for hours. He somehow always had the scoop on new shoes, even on shit I was working on that I thought nobody knew about.
Pay fucking attention when you’re driving, this is such an unnecessary death.

RIP to an OG. Condolences to everyone that knew him

May he find eternal rest with G*d. A legend in the game.

This is most likely real, there's NBA pics on his IG as well.
Sad news. RIP.
-
For real Tate held it down here. RIP to him. As an avid cyclist and fellow skater/SLAP lurker this hurts to lose another one of us.
Never knew the guy but his threads will live on and respect to him. I wish his family peace and everyone out there gets some skating and cycling in for those that are doing so in the other world.
-
last post was "R.I.P" in the McCrooks Memorial.
man, i'm real tired of this people dying shit..... RIP BGT

RIP to an OG
-
This is hard to fathom. Bubblegum Tate and I rarely ever crossed paths here but he seemed so low key and kind and unflappable. Terrible news. My thoughts are with his loved ones.
-
Damn, saw him posted on many stories today on IG, but didn't make the connection until I saw this topic. :(
Didn't know him personally, but seeing those stories and this topic, he was obviously loved and respected and always cool here on SLAP.
Rest in Peace Tate.

RIP Tate <3
He was always so thoughtful towards everyone here on Slap
Deepest condolences to his family and friends

Another unnecessary death. RIP Tate. Sad day, again. Too young to be taken out by a stupid driver.

Yeah the running joke was that Tate was a bot created to post Street Corner ads. Unflappable, as GAY said, is a great word for him. So sad to only see this fuller picture of him now that he’s gone. I’ve been here 17 years and he has been a fixture throughout. RIP to a true Slap Pal, skate nerd, and by all accounts awesome human.

It used to be that people on Slap were beloved when they had a super positive or negative rep with a lot of posts. It was kind of a sign of respect in a way and kind of a recognition that you were on the boards for a long, long time.
RIP to Tate. I absorbed so much shoe knowledge from him and like everyone has said, his positivity just shone through his posts. He was always good-natured, helpful, and took the teases in stride. I don't think anyone actually disliked him. He was a fixture of the boards for sure.
Condolences to his friends and family, but it's hopefully some comfort to see that it seems like he really projected his good humor, positivity, and desire to support people and skateboarding in everything he did (even posting on here) and that he had a positive impact on a lot of people. It is absolutely heartbreaking to lose a person like that, but those are some of the few things we can hope to do - help other people, make their lives easier / better, and throw ourselves into the things that make us happy - and it seems like he did that.

Tate was the whole reason I ever tried a pair of 440’s cause he just made them sound so fucking good in the nb# containment thread. I think one of my first replies on this site might’ve been to him on that topic.

No, it is true. No matter what, Slap's a community. People engage with each other. As a result, we develop bonds. And Lester/Tate was one of the first reasons why I wanted to join the site; his inside knowledge and sharing of information, really made Slap more appealing and exciting to me when I decided to take a further look into what it was over ten years ago. His impact, whether online or in person as discussed, was nothing but supportive - and that positivity can compound and benefit others for a long time to come.
It's a huge tragedy and loss. Rest in peace.
-
RIP Tate
We've been losing way too many pals recently :'(
-
I met Lester when I was about 15. He was the first one of my friends to get a drivers license / car.
Which, as you all probably know, is a complete game changer in a lot of young skaters lives.
All of a sudden the world becomes that much more much bigger and infinite. Places that seemed so far at first, weren’t anymore. I spent a lot of road miles with the dude. And saw a lot of amazing things
Seeing him on here as Bubblegum Tate was always a trip for me, because our conversations were never ever about shoes or gear or the like. Like, I always knew he was a big gear guy (his car trunk was never not full of stuff he’d sell to people on the low, or straight up just give out for free to kids), but seeing him confidently talk about all that stuff with such sheer authority in all his posts always impressed me. He really truly loved that stuff.
One thing I don’t think a lot of people knew about him on here is just how big of a skate nerd he was. Like….the dude knew his shit. Like, really really knew. Like, intensely knew his shit. I guess all the gear talk maybe monopolized his time on here, but dude could literally talk your ear off about the most obscure skate stuff, especially when it came to San Francisco Bay Area skating.
And I welcomed it every time. It was an honor for me to have my ear talked off my him.
Hope all you guys are well.
I’m not on the message boards too much anymore these days, but I just knew I had to write something for a very very old friend of mine who essentially helped create the love for skateboarding I still hold to this day.
Rest In Peace, Lester.

The guy in the video questioned it right. How does a car that is supposed to be going 15 mph in daylight hit a cyclist going in the same direction as you on an open street like that. That bike was in pieces and there was glass and what not all over the ground. I am sure the driver was speeding but perhaps he veered off the road. I am not going to make accusations but I am sure as more details get released, it will make more sense.

Well this truly sucks, I've been lurking on here for a minute and Bubblegum Tate is a name I instantly connect with Salp and always read his posts.
Rest easy Lester, my condolences to his friends and family.

DAMN. What a bummer. Tate got his share of kooks and roastings way back (“Save on bandwidth”), but he was a super helpful and knowledgeable guy.
RIP to Bubblegum Tate and thanks for everything you did to hold it down in Shoes & Gear and all over.
This is really sad.
Yeah was always amazed by his ability to take teasing in stride and never have to fire back.
So true :( I'm ashamed to admit I added to that noise years ago. I'm sure you could pore over his nearly 25k posts and not find a single negative response, that's incredibly admirable given all the potshots he took.
Tate is synonymous with SLAP, which shows the respect he's earned. His name will live forever here. Thinking about those who loved him, I hope there's something wonderful for Lester on the other side.
-
Rest in Peace Tate <3
almost got swiped by some jerk on the way to work today, drivers are fucked

Oh man, I'm really. sorry to here this RIP

rip loaf. i met him in person when I first moved to the bay 6-7 years ago. he was always the nicest dude every time. didn't know he posted on slap, Logged on here to see if there was an RIP post after I heard the news and of course hes an absolute legend on here, makes total sense unlike everything else involved with this situation. i feel really bad for all the homies that grew up with him & knew him a lot better than i did, truly one of the good guys

Rest in power Tate <3 This one hurts man. I’ve been a poster on here for well over a decade now and I’ve always spent the most time in shoes & gear, so Tate was always someone I looked up to because he was so knowledgeable and was hooked up by so many people and companies. Knowing who he is in real life, this all makes sense now. Seems like he was well loved in the Bay Area skate community.
I’m also all for renaming shoes & gear to Tate’s Corner. Seems very fitting and a good way to pay respects to a legendary pal.

rest in peace, wish you all the best in paradise. thank u for starting my most favorite forum thread ever

kind of spooky that his last ever post was "R.I.P." on a memoriam thread.
haven't been on slap long enough to feel his presence, but it's nice to see all your guys' kind words and the impact he had on the scene. life isn't fair and it's just a reminder to live every day like it's your last. RIP BGT

this one hurts, with my old account I've been on here for over 10 years and Tate's always been apart of that journey. I hate that we've been losing so many PALS lately. I think if anyone were to give any new person a lesson of how to truly be apart of the bloards Tate would be the archetypal example that's for sure. nobody will ever log as many hours or be a face of reason like he was. R.I.P. tate
-
Rest easy, Tate. What a bummer.
-
Gone way too soon.
BGT is a fixture of Slap. Shoes and Gear guru. Felt like I knew him in some way seeing his posts on here for so long.
This is how I feel too, every time I saw his BGT profile pic I knew he was about to either drop some dope upcoming shoe pics or about to spew some gear facts or release info. I made my slap account in like 2012 after years of lurking. I've been seeing his comments for the past probably 14 years or longer. RIP to the realest Pal. I hope his family knows he was loved here by thousands of strangers that shared the same interest as him.
-
RIP Tate.
He was the reason i signed up for an account here after just lurking.

Tate was one of the first Pals I met in real life on one of my first visits to SF... instant homie.
Goddamned legend.

still can’t believe he’s gone. tate was one of my oldest friends and we kept in contact almost every day. nancy chin & dr prestige said it best, but he was seriously the best person to be around. he was always down to joke around and share knowledge. he was generous with all the product he kept stashed in his trunk, and supportive of his friends. i wish i could write more but this one hurts. gonna miss him.

Gonna miss Loaf man.. He was always a cool funny dude. I met him as a young teen at Shoreview skatepark and from day one he never switched up. Always had gear in his trunk he would give away or sell for the low to all the locals. Never knew how or where he got the gear from but he always had something! Especially shoes haha. I almost forgot, Loaf had the cleanest highest kickflips I've ever seen in person.
Seems like he had a big impact on this site, he will truly be missed. RIP Loaf.
-
Damn, rip in peace brotha. ❤️

rip to the legend :(
-
Fuck. Such a loss, in so many ways. Thanks for sharing to those who knew him personally. I didn't know him personally, but I did know him as a fixture on SLAP- as the mayor of Shoes & Gear and as our most prolific poster. For all the nonsense that goes on here, this site remains in existence thanks to those who want honestly to talk about skateboarding, day-in and day-out. They give this place meaning. That legwork is done by a select few, and Tate was one of them, possibly the heaviest lifter of all. Losing Tate is a hole that can't easily, or ever, be filled. We're all worse off. RIP, brother.
-
This is just awful. Rip buddy. Not enough bandwidth on here to express his importance to slap as a whole
-
RIP to an iconic Pal. In lieu of actual flowers, here are some cherry blossom dunks:

RIP Bubblegum Tate
Very similar to what others posted, Bubblegum was the first poster I remember seeing consistently when I first started lurking here like 15 years ago. Always on top of everything new, he added so much credibility to this forum. Condolences to anyone who knew him, he will definitely be missed by so many.
-
Anything I have to say is useless but I felt the need to say he will be sorely missed. Tell your friends you love them.

RIP Tate! You will be missed, you were always one of my favorite people on this site.

I’ll be going. Come through and pay your respects. Let’s also schedule a memorial skate session afterwards, if anyone else is interested.

hes been a staple of slap for as long as ive been here. if you asked me to name 5 slappers he would easily be one of them. didnt even realize until i saw this and the posts on instagram that i have interacted with him in real life too. sounds like he was a great friend to many.
not just saying it to sound nice, but he is a part of the reason we all still come to this board. he was a core part of the community, especially 10-15 years ago when it was smaller/less known. the guy loved skating and interacting with other skaters and sharing his passion.
condolences to all his friends both here and in real life.

So I just googled florists in Colma and the top result for me is this place. Here are their custom pieces: https://www.colmaflowers.com/shop/sympathy/custom-tribute-pieces
A skate is a great idea, imho, and judging by the pieces on their website, could be somewhere in the $400-450 range. Alternatively, "Tate" spelled out could also work and would cost about the same. The problem with these more intricate pieces is that they might not be finished on time, so just a nice traditional wreath with a ribbon that indicates that it's from the Pals would also be nice, I think.
This place doesn't seem to have custom stuff on their website, but I'm posting it as an option just in case: https://www.paulsflowerscolma.com/all-sympathy-and-funeral
And yeah, a go fund me seems like a good idea. So yeah, let us know what you think.
-
I'd 100% chip in for a wreath and for some of those Tate designs turned into stickers
-
Damn. It's hard to imagine SLAP without him.
RIP buddy.
-
I’d chip in on wreath and definitely for those stickers . Least I could do for how much money that man saved me with his shoe reviews.

"The Sheriff's Department, the Town of Woodside and the Fire Department were very helpful today supporting the cycling community's memorial ride to the spot where Lester was killed. Lester was an enthusiastically exuberant rider and a well-liked member of PenVelo Cycling Club. Clubs from all over the Bay Area came today to pay respect to Lester's death. The Sheriff Deputies provided an escort from the Woodside Town Hall and were there to help make sure the everyone remained safe. Lester's death was violent and sudden. He was riding in the bike lane when he was hit from behind by a car that was being driven well in excess of the 50 MPH speed limit. There are no skid marks which appears to be a good indication that the driver was not in control of the vehicle. This is yet another example that a cyclist on a bike is no match for distracted, impaired or speeding drivers. Safety on the road starts when we get behind the wheel of a car and we take upon ourselves the responsibility to drive legally and safely and respect all human life."
Loaf forever.

I’m glad @Alan mentioned getting a wreath together. Adds some warmth to the viewing. It’s nice the other wreath says LOAF which we learned is his other nickname. What’s that nickname about?
Did any of his family or friends wonder who @Bubblegum Tate is?
Says a lot that people think enough of you to give you as many aliases as a Wu Tang member.
-
It’s nice the other wreath says LOAF which we learned is his other nickname. What’s that nickname about?
According to one of his friends who spoke during the service, the name Loaf came from the fact that at one point he was buying bread from Costco to give to people. It was said somewhat in passing so I'm not sure if that really tells the story well enough, if anyone knows better please fill in what I left out. It warmed my heart to find out that the name's etymology was loosely based in reference to his immense generosity.
-
That came out beautiful. I’ll post a review later tonight. Thanks for getting that together.

Saw someone else post an Atlas sale in the sale gear thread and made me think of Tate, always was the first to post for that shop.
Awesome job on the flowers y’all, doing great things for the memory of a great dude.

Well done guys, paying tribute to some of s
Slaps realest!
Was traveling the last two weeks - and miss this - so I am sitting right now at Milan airport and shed a tear.
Your actions counts and touched me.

@Alan / mods, where did we ever land on adding “Tate’s Corner” to shoes and gear
-
Looks like he made a big impact on many lives and had a lot of folks who loved him.
RIP

Ah, thanks for the prod. What did you guys have in mind? "Tate's Corner: Shoes & Gear"? Or something else?

Right now it says ‘products—discuss and obsess’ or something to that effect.
If it just said ‘Tate’s Corner’ instead I think it would be nice.
@Alan i entered a name change request for Tate and tagged you. The admin can reach out to either you or I.
Thanks.

Going to miss you Tate/Loaf. Rest in peace king.
Edit: Can all pals sign and circulate this for his memory? https://www.change.org/p/name-new-ssf-skate-plaza-after-lester-loaf-legarda?recruiter=14043229&recruited_by_id=083fdb20-c075-11e9-a565-8d610fff8e5e&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=instagram_story

Damn what the fuck...We been losing too many PALS this year. Probably the nicest dude who I've had the pleasure of sharing the boards with over the years, and his expertise in the shoe game was unmatched. If you had any footwear-related inquiries he could pretty much always answer your questions, and on the rare occasion he couldn't, he'd at least point you in the direction of someone who could.
Know it's been said many times but the entire Shoes & Gear forum will straight up never be the same. RIP Tate, hope you're somewhere catching a sesh with the rest of our fallen PALS.

Come out to Shoreview this Sunday, it’ll be a good time. Also, if you haven’t signed that skate plaza
gofundme change.org page, please do.

I put in a ticket for the admin in the name change section. I also tagged Alan just to show that it has the Mods blessing. Haven’t heard back about my request.

I'll follow up on this next week. Thanks for the reminder.

Only seeing this now, fuck me, breaks my heart, any new thread, any new video Tate had posted it, he saw everything before everyone and shared it, I can’t believe he’s gone, can’t believe I’m only finding out now, been off slap a couple months and came back for a lurk and read this shit, fuck me

I want the world to know you know. I want maximum eyes and longevity.
Much love to the Pals. Up with us ....

RIP Lester Legarda, Bubblegum Tate, Loaf (what Atlas and San Mateo homies would call him 🥺)
Back when I started skating Shoreview in San Mateo, CA, I noticed this super nice dude being genuinely nice to all the youth at the park. Making jokes, keeping everyone lighthearted, giving out product to local kids like Eduardo (who makes horror tik toks now according to niki), Juan, and this dude who had a rly dope style who moved to Mexico.
A decade later I’d start working at atlas, and he would post up to hang and shop around. I was looking forward to seeing him a lot more, but a day after he visited, I had heard the news.
I was in total shock. Just goes to show that life is so precious, anything could happen at any given moment. Your presence is definitely missed—from the Atlas team, Bay Area skate community, and slap.

Mods - what happened to paying homage to Tate with a rename of either the Upcoming Shoes thread (where I feel he really made his mark) or just the whole Shoes and Gear board?

If you are on the main menu underneath Shoes & Gear it says “Tate’s Corner.” Sorta like a sub-heading where the description would typically be. Ex. under Useless Wooden Toy Banter it says “News, gossip and general skate talk.”

ah gotcha. I typically just use the "Jump to" quick menu on the lower right side and bounce between boards that way.

miss you dude. I completely unintentionally ended up skating shoreview on the anniversary of your passing, that very evening. I don't believe in god or an afterlife or any of that but it's coincidences like that that make me second guess myself on that one. I will forever be grateful for the hours we spent shooting the shit together at the park and fucking around on the curb and the kicker. You were an incredibly kind and friendly person that can never, ever be replaced.

I hope that you continue to have these, "coincidences," so that maybe one day you will know God <3
