Hey, so my friends and I want to begin to skate and we want to buy decent skateboards. We're looking for a good quality to price ratio. I've been thinking about buying the alien workshop veritas complete skateboard (7,75"). Is it any good? Or should I build a skateboard out of some parts and if, which brands? (Our budget is around 90$)
-
Are you also beggining to spell?
-
Buy a complete. If you are older than 12 you might want a wider one.
-
I've heard this website is where you want to ask for recommendations:

There are so many brands to choose from these days. If you want to be a rail-wounded skater you could look into something like this:

I can't vouch for it but I wish I had something like this 20 years ago when I was skating LOVE. Will you be skating street or mega ramp?

Go to a shop

$40 indy's (144 - 149) You might as well start him out on indy's.
$35 Bones STF 54mm V5
$20 Indpendent Black Bearings (Or save $ and get mini logo for $10 - With the long term goal to get swiss 6)
$3 shop hardward
$128 plus tax. The shop is hyped, and so is your friend.
-
If you are shopping online, here's one for $96
Skate warehouse deck
Independent trucks

Don't listen to any of these guys. Demand Plan B quality.
I would recommend
Shecks plan B deck 7.375x33
Phantom 8.0 inch trucks
Cortina Nakel Smith signature bearings
Independent wheels (ride the best, fuck the rest)
2" hardware, I only trust Lowe's, fuck Home Depot
Plan B die cut griptape (I usually just DM Chris Cole for some when I need it)
You'll be pro in no time bud, don't forget to like and subscribe!

Those phantom trucks... the shop that I hung out at in 2001 had a DNA account, and everyone there rode them. It was one of my best summer of skating haha. The Phantom trucks were blue, with the round logo, were probably 7.75 and were not the phantom 2's.
I found a set on a complete at the thrift store, contemplated buying them for nostalgia, but in the end left the past in the past.

Any Deluxe brand (Anti-Hero, Krooked, Real) over 8"
Thunder Trucks
Bronson or Reds bearings
Spitfire formula 4 conical wheels
any hardware will do
-
Slap used to have a questionnaire just for occasions such as this. If you want a proper recommendation, we need data.
Please provide: age, sex, weight, height, shoe size, favorite color, and a picture of your sexiest female relative. (male will work too, we're progressive like that)
Please reply in full, with either three "praise Gall"s, or three "fuck Berra"s, and we'll get you set up properly.
-
all these guys are being dicks.. you need a Revive board, dude.
-
what did everyone's first board cost? mine was $150 in 2001.
alien deck / grind kings with the hollow baseplate / rictas / reflex bearings.

$175
Element Donny Barley Deck
Indys
Spitfire 54s

Shorty's Hardware
In retrospect I probably should have started on one of the cheaper/smaller Powell or DNA christmas completes like the shop guy told my parents, cause the thing was a damn boat for me but it's what I wanted.
-
Blind reaper complete was my first.
Go with a complete for your first board or a 9.0 grosso board
-

You're the dick dude, it's called Remive.
If you're not feeling Remive, definetly go with a Mutilation Skateboards Vinne Bahn Pro Model. Dudes the best, plus he's trying to pay for braces.

Think team deck with brown base/raw destructos, pig bearings, and planet earth wheels (I think 54’s) Had to hit the local hardware shop for bolts. Age 14 in ‘99.
Don’t at all remember the cost.
-
i wish i could remember the cost of my first, i think it was $250 ish
element board, black bullet trucks, black panthers and element wheels
-
Zero team deck, destructo trucks, reds, and the wheels elude me. Black with a thin yellow ring around 2004... Maybe rictas? 139$
-
Powell Mike McGill with gullwing magnesium trucks, can't remember the wheels but I want to say 60mm slimeballs...
Get a Real deck, spitfire wheels, independent trucks and some good old generic abec 3 bearings.
Have fun!

Take this to heart. Take all other suggestions with a grain of salt. Or a pinch.

all these people recommending trucks without knowing what kind of wheels he is getting?
they started color coding wheels and trucks so you know which ones are compatible. Pick you wheels first and make sure you get trucks that are the same color so they fit properly.

he's a lawyer so you know he can be trusted to give you accurate lawyerly advice in these complex legal matters

i think its time i come clean... im actually a euro tm impersonating bawtard trying to get dontfearthereefer unbanned.

If you aren't going with a local shop, grab a Tactics complete. $69 shipped. Generator wood, Mini Logo trucks (that I prefer over the Indy Hollows and Thunder Hollow Lights that I have), Mini Logo bearings are fine, and the wheels are as good as anything except the F4s or SPF/STF.

If you order the 8.25, call and ask if they can build it with the 8.38" trucks and a 1/8" riser.

They don't have to be the same color, that's just going to confuse him. Most big brands (Deluxe, Powell) have agreed on the COSNO (complementary OK, supplementary NOT OK) system for matching wheels and trucks. Remember though that violet by the consensus definition is not equal to purple. Anyway just ask the skateshop for a color wheel diagram so you can make an educated choice. Good shops will have at least one hanging around, it's super common.

you should go to your local shop and ask them

oh good call does anyone have a link to the wheel wheel?

Like someone said earlier, you should really go to a skateshop and ask a ton of questions. Go to a real skateshop and not zumiez or a large mall chain skate shop; those will probably try to rip you off and sell you everything under the sun (even though core skateshops do the same thing too sometimes). If you're looking to go cheap, which $90 is really cheap for getting an entire complete, I'd probably suggest buying a shop complete set up if they have one. I doubt you will be able to stay within your $90 budget if you just customize your board yourself but you never know. If you do go custom, i'd suggest buying the shop brand board (they're usually the cheapest), buy some spitfire wheels (usually the cheapest and they get the job done), buy some bones red bearings (the shop will try to sell you swiss but they're $40), i'd suggest buying independent trucks if you're going to buy a wider board (8.0 and up) or buy some ventures if you're staying at 8 or belong in width. Get jessup griptape or mob (don't know anything about grizzly's quality, and just get any kind of hardware but careful to see if you're getting bolts with that require a screwdriver or an allen wrench.
All in all, finding out what you like in skateboarding will take time. It's all about trial and error learning what works and what doesn't work for you. However, there are a few tips that can be helpful.
-If you think you're going to like doing a lot of flip tricks, get a more narrow board (7.5-8") with narrow trucks and smaller wheels.
-If you think you're going to skate transition (aka quarterpipes, bowls, etc.) get a wider board with wider trucks and larger wheels (8-8.5")
Good luck!

first thing, travel back in time to emb circa '93. Show up around 2-3pm, locals will be trickling in by then. Locate Scott Johnson, he's the tall dude with the armload of his own pro model, he just turned pro for this company called Mad Circle. Next, cruise over to the group of younger kids on the steps who are giggling about some mischief, ask for Karl, he's got those Venture 5.0s for you. You're about halfway there, grab a snapple and sit on the steps for a minute, observing Kelch's antics. In fact, just stay right there, by now everybody knows you're putting a board together, and they've seen exactly how much is in your wallet when you pulled it out to pay for the other stuff. Somebody will be along to sell you the rest shortly. If it's getting dark out, I'd recommend waiting in the Carl's jr. for your mom to come pick you up, it gets a little chilly this time of year.

If a guy called Wheatberry tries to sell you wheels make sure none of them are actually potatoes.

i give credit to anyone whos first step to start skating is to go on slap and post about it before even getting a board.
