So this is my opinion you guys can fire away I wont give a shit, I have worked in retail from skateboarding to core shops and womens wear. I currently work at a core shop as we speak but due to situations beyond my control I don't want to name names it is in the 561 area code and you guys can figure it out.
Zumiez and why I hate that store and never would buy shit from there, poor customer service, kooks behind the deck sales, shitty overpriced gear, and to me it seems like they're playing catch up to the rest of the world of skateboarding.
lets put it into context with core shops. the shop I work at has 5 at most different boards we sell Tum Yeto DLXSF NHS DWINDLE and a few smaller brands ie.... killing floor, magenta, quasi, and shop decks grip we 2 kinds Mob or shop which is Jessup trucks Thunder or Indys wheels spitfire or OJ's shoes we carry only a few Vans sk8 hi or Cons nothing more. yeah we aren't big and we do sell stuff but the product we sell is decent rad and cutting edge of what dudes in NYC and SF area are hyped on.
one thing that kills me about this rant/accusation I have caught dudes trying to price things up and refused service Zumiez is garbage and I fucking hate that place......

My zumiez has a better selection of shoes and hard goods than any of my local shops. I've still never bought anything there, but I could see why the younger kids would.

I have two local shops. One is great, one sucks. Zumiez is in somewhere between them, but closer to the shit one. Hard to pass up on their web clearance section for clothes but I'll get my decks from the good shop.
Zzz has put on more events in my area than the shit shop so take that how you will.

I worked one shift at a Zumiez in college because I needed a job, had an in, and thought "At least I'll be getting paid to put boards together."

I didn't even go back for my check.

I have not purchased any hardware there, but I will admit buying a pair of shoes when I started skating again. I had stopped into a couple core shops and they pretty much had dick for selection, and the few shoes I was interested in were sold out in my size. Off to Zumiez, and they had a bunch of shoes I liked and full size runs.
We have two locally owned shops in town, and Tactics opened here as well. Tactics is less than a block from my office and I end up there more than the other ones. They have good selection and support the local skate community.

NO ONE WHO WORKED THERE SKATED BUT ME. i thought "great, ive told them i skate and have been for a few years and ive expressed how i wanted to work in the skate section specifically".
so on my first day, the manager is like "hey grab your favorite t-shirt" and im think "hold up am i bout to get free merch!?" (mind you im a teenager at the time, so this seems logical in my head) then the manager lady tells me to "toss it over your sholder and when a customer comes in you can use it as a selling point, mention how this is your fav tee and why you like it" so i thought ok whatever, thats really fucking corny but retail is 99.9% of the time people being corny to sell product, so i was like whatever ima just hang this dumbass tee over my shoulder while i set up boards, so as im walking back to the skate section the manager is like "no no no, come back i want you to stand infront here of the store, alex (some fucking mop top fucking dickweed who cant skate, and was into skiing) will be working the skate section"
my fucking jaw dropped and it was like this for the next two shifts i worked, i saw this fucking jerkoff alex put the trucks on the wrong way, fuck up griping boards several times, tell someone to pick a board out by which color they like the most, and the icing on the cake was when this dude said "the skate section should be smaller and they need to bring in more snowboarding stuff since the store was located in the north east" and the manager looked this dude dead in his shit and said "your a thinker!"
after that i stopped showing up. it wasnt worth it. i just sold some weed for a lil and made the extra cash i needed at the time. i havent really stepped in there since, i walked by once and saw one of the other dickhead managers there and i mouthed fuck you to him when he saw me just for fun.

I used to buy Toy Machine decks from Zumiez because for some reason my local shop wouldn't sell them and plus most people who hung around the shop were jerks. Then when I got older I would go to get two $30 decks instead of one $60 dollar deck.

Zumies is such a wonderful name for a store because if you think about it it's like li'l kids zooming around on stakedorbs and rollerblades and maybe even scooters and just hearing the name you can just picture them zooming everywhere and just basically thrashin' all over the place! YEAH!!!!

I’ve definitely left them some shitty grass cutting shoes in the box, and walked out with some crispy clearance shoes. I used to shoplift quite a bunch from them, when I was younger and dumber. They did catch me one time stealing a backpack with another backpack stuffed inside. The girl told me to wait with her while they called security, but I just left. Haven’t been back since.

Mostly agree with you and zumiez sucks except for one thing, if you are in zumiez and grabbing your first ever board you may as well go by which graphic you like. You won’t notice any preferences and there’s no concrete sizing rules, may as well pick something you will be excited to look down at, as long as the truck and board sizing is proper I tell noobs at my shop the same thing, go by what excites you. Also not sure why you were surprised that you got the shittiest job as the new guy. They truly don’t give a fuck if you skate that doesn’t count as “experience”.

yeah, mind you i was 19 at the time, i had only worked like 2 other retail job prior to that and one was in the stock room and the other was a cashier at kmart. so i had little clue what to really expect, i never really worked the "floor". i had told them specifically why i wanted to work there; to work in the skate dept, so idk why they expected i was going do everything BUT that. i agree tho i was pretty foolish to think that me being able to kickflip means anything in sales lolol. luckly i had already had a job and i was just doing it to earn some extra cash for a trip.

The one near me seems to only employ kids who were really cool/ edgy in high school. No customer service, and for the most part, just straight up rude. I do order things online and sometimes just do the free in store shipping ($15 for a pair of state mercers). I walk in and out as fast as humanly possible. Though one time I did walk in and the entire staff was trying to do some synchronized dance for someone's ig. I was told the store is closed (it was 5pm on a Wednesday), after calling their customer service line all I got was "dude that sucks"
Long story short, I dunno how they are in business

I work for a skate distribution company and I can tell you first hand zumiez is a big reason why were still in business. they pick up at least 2-3 pallets of product from us every week which is a lot of product and a lot of money. Sure they have kooks who work there but some of the shops myself and my coworkers talk to dont know shit about skating. most shops are some old dude who thought he could strike it rich with opening a skateshop and doesnt know the first thing about the industry. im not saying fuck core shops by any means but im not saying fuck zumiez either because they employ a lot of skater and they also buy huge amounts of products from actual skate companies that are the skate industry and employ skaters and keep skateboarding alive.

thats interesting. its still a wack as fuck place to work haha. but they can keep doing them. i know in some places zumies is the closest thing to a skateshop for some people. the one i worked at was kinda like that. i look at zumiez no different from ccs. theirs a place for them i guess. and like someone also said zumies be doing more for SOME local skate scene then the skateshops in those communities.

Of course, I was 13 or 14 and ignored him because I wanted to watch Andrew Reynolds instead but I wouldn't watch Man Down for years and was blown away by how good it was. First time a Zumiez employee was right.

Had the same thing happen to me at the Zumiez in Tupelo. Some big dude in his 30's said "Sorry, can't let you do that because of liability laws." I'm over here thinking, "dude, I've been gripping boards for years, I can do way better than you. Needless to say I was salty and my friend broke that board in 30 minutes (it was a GoodWood and he made a dumbass decision). Liability laws my ass.

I feel bad for the guys up in Northern Miss, though. Closest skateshop anywhere is 2-3 hours away and the only "skate shop" is some boat shop that sells boards for way more than they're worth. Zumiez is the only option and even then my homie and I have had trouble with them because of their shitty service.

I've had this internal argument over Zumiez for about 10 years now. They suck, plain and simple, but like previously mentioned for most young people in the mid-west getting into skating it's their only option as far as trying on shoes and seeing different board sizes in person. I've accepted that skate shops are a dying business, but the ones that focused more on an online presence like Tactics or the Skatepark of Tampa kind of paved the way for the rise of Zumiez. They had a brick and mortar store where you could see all of this product in person, but they also offered an online store for people that didn't have that luxury. Zumiez had a store in every mall in America at one point, so of course children without a local shop would choose the widely known place online for cheaper shit. So if we're speaking of skate shops as a business they're pretty smart. Luckily I live in Kansas City and Escapist is one of the best shops I've been to. They'll be doing great things for the community, and I'll always support them first, but I have fallen prey to Zumiez crazy online sales. I bought three pairs of shoes for under $15 and I felt greasy doing it, but still. I also feel that their corny staff is kind of responsible for the weird youtube skateboard craze. They're so corporate and cheesy and these young kids got all hyper and excited. When I was younger at a shop, you kind of knew your place, if you did or said something stupid you got called out on it by the employees. Sorry I'm rambling. Zumiez is lame.

I have a close friend who stole 3 sets of bones Swiss from an open case at zumiez, returned 1 set to a dif location, got a deck. Returned another set to another location and got wheels and a hat.

I worked in distribution for years, and the corpo chains like Zumiez were the biggest pain in the asses to deal with. Most of them have crazy requirements for the product you send them, such as - making you print and then place Zumiez shop labels on every single item before it's packed (like, seriously? WTF are the shop employees even doing? That's 100% their job), packing items into a million separate boxes to make things easier for their idiot employees to receive, they get huge discounts and priority on all product because of volume purchasing (often making new product unavailable for core shops to buy), placing specific labels on every box with far more detail than needs to be on them, and pinning every order to an unreasonable cancel date that is always the same day the product arrives at the distro, so that they can try to argue the price down more. Fuck them all. Zumiez. West 49. Boathouse. Whatever. If you work in a skate distro the corpo shops make you their bitch and your bosses will keep sucking their dicks because of the money.

If you don't have a local shop and the mall zumiez is your only option, why wouldn't you just hit up socal skateshop or tactics for what you need? Those places have you know, actual skate rats there and a ton of product.

I worked for Zumiez for a few years, and can assure it is a terrible company to give your money to.
I originally worked for a small chain of shops called Fast Forward, based in Texas and maybe ~15 stores. They had shops in malls, but they also sponsored locals at each location, which included a free deck and wheels per month, plus a great discount on everything else. They also brought in demos all the time and gave back to their communities. So even though they were technically a "mall shop" they did it right.
Zumiez bought out Fast Forward in 2004-ish. I had been a salaried co-manager at Fast Forward for a few years so I opted to stay when it got bought out, got the same pay and all that stuff. It was great for a bit, until they eventually fully unleashed their horrible business practices on us.
The worst part is the sales tactics. Their slogan or whatever you want to call it was literally "SELL AS MUCH AS YOU CAN TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU CAN." They had pages upon pages of acronyms and clever sayings to remember to help you sell stuff, like "4 over the door" which meant anytime someone went in the dressing room, you were supposed to run around the store and grab 4 more items you thought they might like and throw them over the dressing room door to pressure them into buying more.
They have sales charts where you literally had to write down how much you sold every single hour and if you didn't meet the goal you would coached on what you were doing wrong. They wanted you to follow people around and hound them and show them stuff constantly as well.
They also had commission-based sales on purchases over $100. It's like 2% for $100-200, 3% for 200-300, and on, up to a 7% maximum I think.
Now I know how retail sales works and a lot of those things are just smart techniques to ensure your company is making money. And that's great. And if that's what you're all about, then have at it.
But every time you shop there you are giving your money to a company that only cares about selling as much as possible to everyone. And each of those sales is less money for the dude that actually gives a shit and started up a local skateshop to try and give back to the community. Yes, local shop dude wants to make a bunch of money too, but generally they do a much better job of fostering relationships with the local skaters and also try to have demos and contests and whatever. And since they're not tied down by stupid fucking corporate policies, they're also more likely to work with people on stuff and do little things like special order and whatnot. Not to mention you can usually also hang out in your local shop and watch skate videos without some fucking dude-bro employees bugging you constantly.
I could prob go on and on but I just realized this is stupid as fuck but I'm also not gonna delete everything I typed.
Bottom line is, Zumiez is not "eh whatever they have good sale items sometimes." They are helping to kill your local skateshops, and that's not a good thing.

kepner78 just described a nightmare. I've never seen a Zumies and have only heard bad things. I'm pretty sure from the anecdotal evidence I've read here that without shops like these Crailtap would've sunk years ago.

I openly shop at zumiez over my local.
At my local they judge everyone who walks in. At zumiez they don't know enough about anything to judge anyone, so I can shop in peace.

Last time I went to Zumiez I was wearing a TransWorld hat, and when an employee asked about it they were shocked to hear that there was another skateboarding magazine that wasn't Thrasher.

i think the bulk of people paying for stuff at zumiez and skateboards in general are parents. They probably feel more comfortable going to some chain in the mall than going to the local shop

Before I got the current full time gig, I would sticker lucky bearings for my buddy's LLC and it would go by freight to zumiez...
Additionally their HQ skatepark looks fun (although real skaters not youtube goons or chodes would probably get jail time or heavy fines for trespassing)
