Title: Sizing of Trucks in regards to board size
Post by: jhskates84 on May 16, 2012, 03:17:50 PM
Been skating an 8.37 with some 7.75 Indy's and was curious to know if anyone else used smaller trucks in contrast to larger boards?  It's not a personal preference just too cheap to buy wider trucks haha

You're missing out, bro.

Get a job, and get some trucks that fit your board - better stability and locking into grinds (in my experience)

Oh yeah!  Figured as much but I didn't know whether anyone on the forum had a preference to such.  I skated 7.75s on 8 inch decks for the longest time since there wasn't much of a differential.

There is no such thing as 7.75 indys, although given the size of boards people are riding in 2012, that probably is a size they should make.
It sounds like you're skating 129's, which is a 7.5'' truck, which is absurd to have on an 8.38. You should be riding 149s with that size deck; and you'd be hard pressed to find someone who says otherwise.

Sometimes it depends, I have 2 boards set up right now that are both about 9" wide (I'm real tall, it makes sense for me I swear!) and one has Indy 169's which are the proper size for a 9" board and the other has 139's which are for boards about 8"'s wide.

I find myself riding the one with the 139's simply because it's a lot lighter, I do, however, land primo much more using them.

Just something to think about, it's probably not as big of deal cause you're not riding stupid boards like me though...

139's or 149's for anything 8+ inches unless you step to 9+ then you need 169's

I don't know what I was thinking writing 7.5 seeing as I skated them for years. Where did you get 7.63? I always read/assumed they were an even 7.6. The axles width is actually 127mm and not 129

Riding smaller trucks than the board fucking sucks, but you dont really feel it until you switch, thats when you get what youve been missing out on.

Get some 149's or at least 139's fo that bitch

this. you get a wider turning radius, more room for grinds, & you can carve transition much much better.

i been riding thunder 149's for over a year now and wouldnt go back to skinnier trucks at all.
i usually have a board that's 7.9 - 8' and although it may mean the trucks stick out past the edge of the board, it rides like a fucking dream

when i mostly rode 8's i used 139's. then started buying strictly 8.25's and kept using the 139's but decided to change to 149's after a friend recommending them. switched em out and ever since its been so much better. i really cant explain it, it just feels more solid and locking into grinds is a lot easier.

I remember reading that Greco uses 129's on 8.5 boards.
Still, I wouldnt be able to imagine skating a board like that.
I was on 139's for 8.25's, decided to make the switch to 149's one day and never looked back.

EDIT: Also, is it just me or are 149's less prone to axle slipping than 139s?
I was getting axle slips a lot when i was on 139's. Ever since Ive moved on to 149's i havent had one at all.

I won a 7.75 board in a contest, and skated it with indy 139s. The axels stood out it looked kinda funny.

do the axles sticking out annoy you at all? i ride 8.25/8.38s but even with 8.38 and 149s i can't stand seeing any truck poke out. i like how 139s look and feel on my setup, i guess there's no point changing.

to be honest, i don't notice it at all

Well I'm on 8.5's now, but back when I was skating 8.25's with with 149s it didnt bother me too much at all.
