Title: Documentaries
Post by: David on August 01, 2011, 10:25:21 PM
There's already a movie thread but I thought I'd give this a go.

Documentaries by Adam Curtis, John Pilger, and Naomi Klein are good for political stuff. There's probably a documentary about any subject you can think of, so post your favorites or ones that deserve our attention.

Dark Days: great film about people living in abandoned tunnels.

The Shock Doctrine. naomi Klein has an interesting take on economics.

Talking Feet (w/ D Ray White) : about appalachian dancing.

lately i've been getting really into documentary shorts, mostly ones that are found on vimeo.  Here's a couple of my favorites:

Borderland (http://vimeo.com/9696215)

Scrapertown (http://vimeo.com/9702393)

Thank you for posting these, I got really into them. I love documentaries like these three because I get to experience things that I don't know nearly anything or enough about. They were also really beautifully shot and well edited. The Archive got me down though because it sucks that we live in a society that can't appreciate stuff like that and the fact he can't even sell them for an astoundingly low price than what they're worth sucks.

Anyway I love this thread, keep it up dudes.

Good post Bullet.  I'd forgotten about those documentary shorts - the same guys also did this one about pool skating -

Cannonball (http://vimeo.com/9696629)

Adam Curtis's The Power of Nightmares  (http://"http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-power-of-nightmares/")is savage, particularly if you're any way interested in the Cold War, US foreign policy and the last 10 years spent at war in the Middle East.  Definitely worth taking the time to watch Curtis' other documentaries, The Trap (http://"http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-trap/") and the somewhat cerebral The Century of the Self. (http://"http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/the-century-of-the-self/")

Year Zero - The Silent Death of Cambodia (http://"http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/year-zero/") is close to 30 years old now and as far as I can tell, is one of the first major investigations in the popular media about how the Khmer Rouge managed to get into power before the wholesale slaughter of its citizens.  Compelling viewing.

I'm a massive fan of Prof. Jim Al-Khalili, particularly the excellent and enlightening The Secret Life of Chaos, (http://"http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/secret-life-chaos/") I've watched this loads - it's largely about chaos theory and the inherent unpredictable nature of the universe and everything else in it.   The more recent mind-melter Everything (about relativity and the massiveness of the universe) and Nothing (string theory/quantum physics) is equally riveting, if you happen to be into this sort of thing - http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/everything-and-nothing/ (http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/everything-and-nothing/).

Loosely related to the chaos theory side of things and also neatly tying in with Adam Curtis' The Trap is High Anxieties - The Mathematics of Chaos, which traces how modern market economics is fundamentally flawed from the start due to how little we/policymakers understand about the maths which run it.

Pt.1/9 High Anxieties - The Mathematics of Chaos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pKrKdNclYs#)

Excellent thread, there's some top notch tips to get stuck into later.

My mate showed me a documentary today called The King of Kong, in which two men compete for the Donkey Kong World record. It's weirdly compelling to the point where I actually cared about how good a forty-something year old man is at an arcade game.

The King of Kong : A Fistful of Quarters ( 2007 ) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwtY0CjPJh8#ws)

There was also a really good documentary on in the UK the other week about the feud between Banksy and Robbo, can't find a streaming link but here's (http://www.demonoid.me/files/details/2713994/701628/) the torrent for those of you that have Demonoid accounts.

Edit: Just found another link for those that don't have Demonoid, here (http://www.mediafire.com/?y96jv23cl6tlmlc). You have to download the torrent file from Mediafire first, as Channel 4 keep on deleting those found on most of the torrent search engines.

I had to watch this in film class. Its about this crazy dude who wanted to live with bears and make an epic documentry about it. the story is told by the 2 people who knew him best. Its so trippy becuase the main character seems like the type of dude owen wilson would play, and the story is so absurd that you think it would be fake but its 100% real. 100% authentic footage

king of kong is such a great film. its seriously entertaining even though its centered around a 20ish year old game. PS Brian Kuh who makes several appearances in the film is such a fucking kiss ass weiner.

a friend showed me this, modify. its about body modification. piercing tattoos and way way more extreme stuff. its a fascinating film but some of the content is seriously fucking graphic.

watch "word wars". its a documentary about pro scrabble players.. pretty awesome. some dudes just live and breath it and practice nonstop and some of the other dudes are just naturally brilliant and kill it without trying.

in this one part theres 3 dudes in a hotel the night before the national championship and 2 guys are practicing in the hotel all night but another dude goes and gets a hooker haha. then he shows up ten minutes late to his game the next day and still slays the guy he plays.

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/road-to-las-vegas/4od (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/road-to-las-vegas/4od)

I've just finished watching this. In summary, it's the antithesis to the american dream.

As for the documentary's production, the 1 hour and forty minutes doesn't really do the story justice. It would also have been interesting to cast more of an insight into the childrens' perspective. Saying that, I would highly recommend it.

I just got a link to this (Madness In The Fast Lane). About these twin girls that suffer a condition that causes them to be insane which literally made them run into traffic on the highway. Pretty crazy footage in here. This is the summery on the Youtube page:

Quote
In 2008, BBC cameras filmed two Swedish sisters throwing themselves into traffic on the M6. When it was shown on BBC One, nearly 7 million viewers were glued to their screens, and millions more watched it later on YouTube.

The footage was shocking. One previewer wrote "On no account miss this documentary. It opens with what is perhaps the most extraordinary footage I've seen on TV".

But this amazing footage was only part of an even more incredible story, one which could not be told at the time for legal reasons.

Now, two years later, this documentary reveals the full story of the hours just before the cameras captured that motorway footage, and the even more chilling story of what happened over next 72 hours, which left one of the sisters fleeing the scene of a crime, after she had stabbed a man through the chest.

Those who were at the centre of this fascinating legal case, including the police and Crown prosecution service, reveal the complex issues involved in both bringing charges and taking this disturbing case to trial.

A leading criminal psychiatrist, Dr. Nigel Eastman, explains the difficulties the judicial system has in achieving justice and deciding punishment when dealing with mental illness. He explains the possible causes of the womens' behaviour, and why, in his view, it could happen again.

Buck

The Horse Whisperer" may be the stuff of Hollywood legend but the cowboy who inspired the novel and film is very real. Buck Brannaman ? master horseman, raconteur and philosopher - is a no-excuses cowboy who travels the world sharing a hard-won wisdom that's often more about human relationships than about horses. Buck follows Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life horse-whisperer, he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses - and people - with his understanding, compassion and respect. In this film, the animal-human relationship becomes a metaphor for facing the daily challenges of life.

Achant? is a great film about voodoo in Haiti.  And all of the music is by Zammuto (previous member of The Books).  It's not quite a documentary but more of just a showing of these bizarre lives.

Inside Job is top notch amazing, really enjoyed it, definitely required viewing for anybody with the slightest interest in the 2008 financial crash and why we're stuck in a deep recession at the moment.

If you liked that, check out Client 9 : The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, which is about the guy in the poster frame of the Youtube clip from Inside Job.  Full on sketchy/completely wrong situation where the head goons of the likes of Merrill Lynch, Goldman Sachs, AIG Insurance put the oar in to get rid of somebody they knew was trying to drag them down.  Politics is dirty at the best of times.

forks over knives - 2 doctors that cure cancer by simply changing peoples diets . . (had to download off tpb)

collapse - dude worked for the FBI sitting in a room smoking cigs telling all the fucked up stuff he's experienced. He also talks about how the economy is already fucked because of "peak oil." (Netflix insta watch)

food inc - shows the fucked up conditions majority of our meat is manufactured in. Also tells how Montisanto patented the soy bean and puts any farmer out of business that doesn't use theirs by suing for copy-write infringement. (Netflix insta watch)

guns germs & steal - national geographic simply explaining how USA gained so much power and was able to defeat everyone when we first arrived here. (Netflix insta)

burzynski - doctor cures like over 400 patients of cancer and cannot get his treatment passed by the FDA despite his evidence. (Netflix insta)

also this

KYMATICA - FULL LENGTH MOVIE - Expand Your Consciousness!!! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AanQ2mY2jjc&feature=related#)

Whatever it's intentions may be, this film is massively incoherent despite it's abundant use of images, quotations, and stock footage.  The veracity of  films like the Zeitgeist series have been questioned by many people and have come under serious scrutiny from laymen and academics. Many would not really consider them to be documentaries at all. But if they inspire you, go ahead and enjoy them. However, see for yourself if the  information given checks out even after minimal research.

For example, in that video Kymatica, the narrator tries to tell us that a 'certificate' is by definition a document that certifies the ownership of something (then it goes on about the sinister implications of 'birth certificates'). But after just a quick search I found this definition as well, "a document testifying to the truth of something". That was just using common sense.  Take the information given in these videos with a grain of salt if you must, but like I mentioned before, there are those who would say that these sorts of videos don't really live up to the standards of an actual documentary. Of course that doesn't mean that there isn't any wisdom to be gleaned from watching them.

watch "word wars". its a documentary about pro scrabble players.. pretty awesome. some dudes just live and breath it and practice nonstop and some of the other dudes are just naturally brilliant and kill it without trying.

in this one part theres 3 dudes in a hotel the night before the national championship and 2 guys are practicing in the hotel all night but another dude goes and gets a hooker haha. then he shows up ten minutes late to his game the next day and still slays the guy he plays.

I watched Word Wars a few months ago. It was amazing. if you liked that watch "Wordplay". Really similar, but with the New York Times crossword puzzles.

I agree, these internet-movies aren't documentaries, they can't be categorized. You never know who made them and which interest is behind it and so you have to research the information before you start using it elsewhere. But I think the Zeitgeist-film doesn't really claim to be scientific so often, it just gives you thought-provoking impulses about the general system most of us live in. Plus, there are lies on television as well so you can never trust "documentaries" 100 percent. Just look at those series on TV where they put an iPhone in a microwave and call it "science". In contrast I think these internet movies are immeasurably more valuable.

Fair enough. And just because people like Alex Jones are sensationalistic and highly eccentric doesn't mean that things such as Eugenics, Social Darwinism, Malthusianism, Edward Bernays etc. aren't real. Those are subjects anyone can look up in the encyclopedia. Some people, however, give in to the fear and paranoia that those like Alex Jones seem to induce.

edit: You know what? Forget it. Post whichever videos you want.  Doesn't matter.

Until the Light Takes Us isn't too illuminating if you know anything about the Norwegian black metal scene already. I was pretty disappointed by it. They didn't follow up on a lot of the interviews/discussions as they should have. The Varg footage is probably its saving grace.

That pretty much sums up how I felt when I was done. It was ok, could have been a lot better. It's still pretty cool watching interviews with Varg and Fenriz, though.

This takes place in the same landfill in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where they shot the film, Wasteland, about a community that lives off of the refuse.

Estamira is a 63 year old schizophrenic woman who manages to survive in the landfill. She talks about her ideas and philosophies of life, the universe and religion (or her lack thereof), albeit from the point of view of someone who has suffered emotionally, physically, and mentally throughout her life. She has seemingly delusional rantings and exhibits nonsensical 'speaking in tongues' while the rest of the film is mixed with periods of her intense, peculiar insight fueled by a furious, inconsolable anger and 'profound depression'.

This is in Portuguese, w/o subtitles.

BBC documentary called "stadiums of hate"

About "fans" of soccer teams and their racism in Poland and Ukra?ne, the two countries that host the European Championship starting this friday. Incredibly scary that there are still people like that. And at one point the journalist interviews the chief of police of a major city in Ukra?ne and his reply is just... You have to see it to believe it.

It's 25 minutes and really flies by.

http://www.documentairenet.nl/review/bbc-panorama-euro-2012-stadiums-of-hate/ (http://www.documentairenet.nl/review/bbc-panorama-euro-2012-stadiums-of-hate/)

This documentary is very biased and one sided in it's trying to bring out racism in Ukraine in Poland and it's a shame. Soccer hooligans are basically what they have for gangs and organized "crime" in those countries aside from the mafia. Of course these groups are compromised of ignorant racist fucks but what they did with these documentaries is like going to the middle of Alabama in search of some bull riding fair - yes, you will find members of the KKK.

Of course it exists but this documentary irks me having lived in Poland and spent extensive time in Ukraine. I had black friends, Asian friends, Spanish friends, etc... there and I never encountered any problems nor did they. I even went to a few futball games and will say I saw a couple of dumbasses in neurotic shirts but that's basically any sporting event.  What about that guy who skateboarded that recently got beat to death outside of the dodger stadium? It's scarier to think about here in the states because these same ignorant folk can get their hands on guns.

The Winter of The Beard on Vimeo (http://vimeo.com/32092307)
Quote
In the fall of 2005, two filmmakers invited six men across America to join them in an experiment.

They would all stop shaving for six months. No trimming allowed. Each was provided a video camera and weekly interview questions to document his own experience. The resulting 600 hours of intimate footage revealed a group of men traversing the same rite of passage from disparate vantage points.

Throughout the process, the men told stories from their pasts, shared likes and dislikes, and confessed personal fears and aspirations. They laughed and cried, hid and came alive behind their beards.

The tireless taping captured bad days and good ones, and it is in this framework that the individual stories stand out and the beards fade into the background.

From a son dealing with his father?s descent into Alzheimer?s, to financial and marital struggles, to the birth of a child, The Winter of The Beard reveals the trials and tribulations of what it means to drastically alter one?s appearance and otherwise go on living life.

Watched this the other night on Netflix. Really powerful stuff and an amazing "twist" ending. Was blown away by the lengths some AIDs patients went to to educate and medicate themselves in the 80's. There's a scene of people poring the ashes of their dead loved ones on to the White House lawn that's just devastating.

'american' about bill hicks could've been better but it was decent cause i like bill hicks. oh, 'reindeerspotting' was about some euro kid who goes on a road trip to paris doing suboxine the whole time. kinda gnarly, he got some fingers chopped off to settle a debt and his drug of choice is boring but he kinda lives the life for a while anyways.

Dude, the people in Troll 2 are fucking crazy.  The actor who plays the owner of the general store said he was fresh out of a mental hospital when filming Troll 2, and he says that he wanted to hurt the little boy in the film.  The woman who plays the wife is a delusional hermit who takes care of her mother and won't leave the house, despite delusions of having an acting career one day.  She complains about loud noises that haunt her, and seems legitimately troubled.  The main guy is a dentist who seems to have an identity crisis mid-documentary.  Grandpa Seth loves watching Family Guy.  Bizarre.

Also checked out Blackfish. Good example of how even the vilest of businesses can be made to look alright with some solid PR.

If anyone has a link to Partly Fiction that'd be great. I gladly pay to watch but Amazon and Itunes only cater to people with credit cards (in Europe).

Mein Krieg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jwm3TFxBgDk#)

"Late in the 1980s, two documentary film makers found six German men, all in their 60s and 70s, who had been soldiers in the German invasion of the USSR in 1942. Each carried an 8mm camera into battle and they still had their film. "Mein Kreig" alternates between interviews with these older men, now apologetic, philosophical, or defiant about their participation, and the footage they shot. It's chronological: basic training, the train trip East, roof-top vistas of war-torn Warsaw, peasants in Belarus, the downing with carbine volleys of a Russian plane, winter, a holiday at the Black Sea, mud, impassable roads, death, destruction and retreat. "Home, that was the front," one says."

Figured I'd bump this thread, after getting some good tips from the movie thread.

Unique perspective on murder and injustice. Almost do not recommend it because of its intensity.

Also watched Project Grizzly, about this Canadian macho cowboy fellow who aims to out-toughen a grizzly bear under a flimsy pretext of science. He's like a right-wing Timothy Treadwell, but slightly less crazy.

I posted this in last good movie watched thread. Such a good movie that will leave you messed up in the head for days. That part when they find out Zachery gets killed and its a loud nonstop screaming montage still haunts me. It makes you scared of random weird  strangers lurking around.

"MY BROTHER THE JIHADIST"

For the full stream: https://www.linktv.org/programs/my-brother-the-jihadist (https://www.linktv.org/programs/my-brother-the-jihadist)

-Just watched it. Seems so crazy how someone could latch onto something for a sense of purpose only for it to become somewhat of an obsession/mission. To me, it's almost like the path of extremism is taken for the sake of being a hardcore purist within itself. The director just follows his brother around (for his homecoming) in his attempts to understand the zeal his bro has for it.

The Amy Winehouse documentary was great, even if you don't think you give a shit about Amy Winehouse. By the guy that made Senna, which is amazing, even if you don't like Formula 1.

The Stooges documentary was solid mostly because the subject was compelling.

The Oasis documentary was surprisingly excellent, even though I'm not a fan. I gained a bit of respect for those guys.

I was going to shitpost about the Senna documentary. I'm really not the movie-watching type, especially documentaries, but I literally cried watching it, even though I was too young to really remember Ayrton's death. So I'm definitely going to look for the Amy film.

i didn't feel like it was that great. im a big stooges fan so my hopes were really high. i think they did an ok job with what they had to work with, but the fact that they had such a small amount to work with (hardly any video footage of the early days, iggy and james are the only ones still alive, ect.) really didnt lend itself to the best doc in my opinion. maybe i was bummed because i felt like half of it had to be corny animations because they had nothing visual to go with the stories. in my honest opinion they couldve focused solely on iggy and i bet the doc wouldve been a lot more interesting. the stuff he did with bowie is some of his best material in my opinion and he was totally off the rails for a while up until the early 90s i feel like. you look at what hes been through and the experiences hes had and its amazing that hes still able to perform the way he does at his age.

i might give that oasis one a shot. is it on netflix? i dont really care for them, but im a sucker for rock and roll docs. need to check out the winehouse one as well.

the kurt cobain one on netflix is absolutely fantastic. fan or not, i highly suggest that one just because of how crazy that murder/suicide case is (he was fucking murdered, theres no doubt about it). theres a keith richards one on there too thats pretty good.

the other two that i have to suggest would be the jay reatard doc and the one about the lead singer from pentagram, but those might require some heavy searching online. i bought a guitar after watching the jay reatard one. the pentagram one is your typical rock star drug addict who gets clean story, but its a good one.

the eagles of death metal one that was just on HBO isnt bad either. it focuses mostly on the paris attacks and its super gnarly hearing those people talk about it. i think they had another one before that happened that was just about jessie being a wackjob, but that one was decent too. i think vice did it.

I guess I could have said I didn't mind watching 2 hours of the Stooges even if the documentary wasn't the greatest.

The Stooges, Winehouse, and Oasis docs were all on Amazon streaming. Haven't seen the pentagram one but that was on Netflix. There was a Roky Erickson one on there that was pretty damn depressing.

Where can I find the Jay Reatard one and what is it called?

I'll check the Stones one too. I have a terrible pirate copy of Cocksucker Blues somewhere that has its moments.

That Pentagram one was really good, I hope Bobby is doing okay, I heard he relapsed or something recently.

Another good doc I liked was Best of Enemies, it's about these televised debates in the late 60's that basically shaped the way modern news is broadcast today, with more yelling and arguing than actual reporting. Pretty interesting if you're into that stuff.  There's another one on Netflix about the Oklahoma City Bombing that was pretty good. I can't remember what it was called though. I was pretty young when it happened and never really looked into the motivations behind it, so it was pretty eye opening for me.

"Capturing the Friedmans" is an early documentary from Andrew Jarecki, who would go on to make the amazing docu-miniseries "The Jinx".

It was originally supposed to just be a documentary about like clown sub-culture in New York, before Jarecki switched the focus, to following the allegations of sexual abuse and rape, that the brother and father of one of clowns faced. Really interesting watch.

oooh baby, i can' wait to watch the Vietnam doc, falls asleep and re watch it again.
seriously, i am excited

Been watching it every night this week. It's so good! But, like you, I am still only on episode 3 because I keep dozing off.

Same here. Fell asleep to this the last 3 nights.

lol, I watched part one last night and I was really confused trying to understand when the communists took power over the nationalists, I didn't even realize that the french had fucked it all up beforehand.

Same here. Reminds me of how people kept calling Afghanastan the next Vietnam. Makes more sense now. It also baffled me when I realized Vietnam is similar in shape to California but much smaller, and how ineffective our military was at the time.

Nowhere in the documentary does she mention the cause of this refugee crisis, namely the American-led toppling of the Libyan government and the American-Saudi-Israeli-Turkish coalition that funded and supported ISIS and other "moderate rebels" in their war against the Syrian government (which they're losing now thanks to Russian intervention).

Her documentary is a contextless pandering to the alt-right, jingoistic American "patriots", conservatives, MAGAtards, the European far right and Israelis all at the same time. The goal, however, was to present an argument to Europeans and Americans that militarized border walls good, refugees bad, it's more humanitarian to keep refugees out, and America/NATO dindu nuffin in North Africa and the Middle East.

So don't kid yourself, it's entirely politically motivated - something to be aware of before watching

2/3 of the 'refugees' aren't actual refugees, they're economic migrants sold a false dream by globalists.
sure, that 1/3 that are actual refugees behind israel's ethnic cleansing of the middle east but that's only syria, afghanistan, iraq and yemen. all of whom would be better housed in middle eastern countries than european ones.

Do you know what a positive feedback loop is? The mass immigration is an effect of the destabilization of the region. It wasn't like suddenly a lot of people left one day and then suddenly the whole country started going through a fit. Destabilization and conflict occurred, then people left. If people stayed the destabilization would still be occurring, and the places they lived would still be desolated by conflict. If the west wants to stop mass immigration, it has to stop engaging in interventions. It can't just fund militant groups, occupy middle-eastern countries, engage in regime change, and fund both Israel and Saudi Arabia and expect nothing to happen because of it. Otherwise you're asking for something like the Israel border where they just fuck over Palestine and then shoot whoever comes close to its wall.

You can't very much blame people for vacating such a situation. This also implies that these people could even be put to useful work during US and NATO intervention and in the area they are in, which for most would be unlikely. Second, mass immigration doesn't just occur in a vacuum. It generally occurs for economic reasons, and for reasons involving imperialism (see: my previous post). Your statement suggests that somehow mass immigration occurs regardless of these concerns, and that one could simply utilize a wall or some other form of border security and mass immigration would somehow stop all together.

It does not even address where the majority of illegal immigrants are coming from, which is not over the border. They are coming through legal ports of entry through places like airports and then overstaying Visa's. If your ultimate goal here is the construction of a wall, you should be aware it does nothing more than serve as an exorbitant waste of money with both its initial and then continual cost.

You have like a doc streaming channel right?

Title: Re: Documentaries

you obviously didn't watch it since you're conflating american illegals vs europe's.
'the west' is not monolith so when the us fights israel's wars, the refugees shouldn't be allowed to run to ireland. or sweden. or anywhere except possibly israel or america.
there are ngo's that swoop up floating 'refugees' and migrants just off the coast of turkey. they don't have to cross the channel to europe, they only plan to get out where they'll be 'saved' by [oftentimes jewish] do-gooders who asides facilitating the invasion are bigtime money launderers. 'in my country we're taught israelis are bad but here they are greeting us under the israel flag'.
they're not 'overstaying visas' liek in the states, you need to destroy your paperwork in order to lie and claim asylum.
it's part of the 'kalergi plan' to undermine nationalism and separate countries and identities for a low iq population that will better serve the elites. it's been plannned for decades but you can see it happening now.
my goal is a wall? um, i live in america and this is a documentary about europe. you'd know that if you watched instead of reciting someone else's review or whatever you're going on.
and again, if you watched you'd realize that only 1/3 of so-called refugees are in fact that, the vast majority are people who were sold a false dream so they sold homes or in some other way came up w/ the $1500 it costs to be ferried illegally across the continental borders [nevermind how much it cost getting to that point]. these aren't broke refugees, they're people w/ a little $ who saw an opportunity to get more and live this fantasy life sold to them by 'society for open borders' and other NGO's.

I honestly thought this short 21 minute documentary about a professional soaper was satire but the creator claims it's serious, however it's pretty hilarious and I recommend giving it a watch if you have some spare time to waste.

what a wild ride. Not even the inevitable future Dougster doc can ever top this. Not even that rollerblading documentary, it is in a class of its own

im not saying i dont beleive the dude in the Hernandez doc sitting with his dad. Im just saying if what everyone from that school is saying (hes lying) i wouldnt be suprised.

weird they only mentioned PCP once though. dude was a full blown dustbunny. theres alot left unanswered especially his time in jail before killing himself, it was kinda just glossed over. that being said it was a good documentary. needs 4 more episodes though.

I didn’t watch that Hernandez doc, but he lived close by me. My brother worked at a junk yard and when aarons car got towed there, and once the cops were done checking the car my brother took the key to it as a souvenir. he’s still got it.

His "Weird Weekends" episodes are interesting, thought out, but still lighter in subject. They were on the BBC back in the day. If you can't find any, I'll give them to you. He's got some great heavier shit later on too if you fall into enjoying him. I went on a huge documentary kick. Lots of war docs too.

I thoroughly enjoyed this.  Specifically the Repulsion and Napalm Death parts.  Always love Brutal Truth/Dan Lilker but I couldn't care less about the more modern bands.

However, Anal Cunt seriously needs it's own documentary.  I'm very aware of what a piece of shit Seth Putnam was...and these days the whole 'edgelord' thing is beyond lame, but he was a tried and true maniac and the band was hilariously necessary at that time.   He truly didn't give a fuck and not in a 'showmanship' way.

"1976 film by Mitsuo Yanagimachi

God Speed You! Black Emperor (ゴッド・スピード・ユー! BLACK EMPEROR Goddo Supīdo Yū! Burakku Enperā) is a 1976 Japanese black-and-white 16 mm documentary film by director Mitsuo Yanagimachi, which follows the exploits of young Japanese motorcyclists, the "Black Emperors".

The 1970s in Japan saw the rise of a motorcycling movement called the bōsōzoku, which drew the interest of the media. The movie follows a member of the "Black Emperors" motorcycle club and his interaction with his parents after he gets in trouble with the police.

The Canadian post-rock band Godspeed You! Black Emperor took their name from the film."

I’m a big fan of documentaries.
There are a ton of good ones free on Tubi.

Ones I liked recently are:

Peter and the Farm - a frustrated artist buys a farm to make a living and farming turns into his (unsatisfying) life

Finding Joseph I - a biography of HR from Bad Brains

The UFO Movie They Don’t Want You to See - an educational documentary that debunks many well known UFO encounters

Everything and Nothing - an educational documentary about the history of Physics and how humans came to understand and measure space

Blood and Steel, Cedar Crest Country Club - if you liked the N-men doc or dogtown and z-boys watch this one! A rich kid in the 80s has indulgent dad who pays for a giant vert ramp on a golf course property.. it turns into a Mecca for East Coast skateboarding

Got on Tubi to watch ‘The N Men’ the other week and it made me realize how many skate/surf films are on there.

Was watching this surf/skate/action sport film from 1976, “Go For It” - the Larry Bertlemann stuff is super sick, about four minutes in:
https://tubitv.com/movies/697538/go-for-it

And the music for his sequence is so good, can’t get it out of my head:

Rest of the movie is great, some Zephyr team footage, definitely a Warren Miller vibe too.
