Backed Spain for the Euros, might as well keep it going even though now I have to feel lame about it because they're favourites. There are a lot of teams I'd like to see do well though, so it should just be a good month of viewing.
Turns out my brother has some Dutch friends and I guess they're all going to South Africa. He has tickets for four matches I think, I'm incredibly jealous.

I'd like to see the U.S. get to at least the quarters. I'm tipping Spain for the win, though who knows, maybe Messi can reproduce that Maradona '86 spirit. Without the hand of god though. I don't know shit about football but I love following the World Cup and the Euros. I always back Denmark. I would really like to see an African team do really well like how Japan and Korea did last World Cup.

Yeah, it's going to be really hard to get past the group stage. I don't think our team is as good as 2006, Cahill is really the only thing we have going for us.

im behind the US 99.9%. i think this is the best shot we've had in a while (Clint and Jose!!!). this world cup will be interesting. Argentina just seems all over the place. you hear more about Maradona than you do the squad (those comments yadayadayada)...Mascherano is the captain so ive heard, but what about Crespo? is he on the team? if so, he should be commanding the squad. Brazil is a contender (but Roni isnt selected, so im pretty bummed), England im not really feeling... they are stacked, but they never seem to pull the trigger, Germany is my pick actually (Miroslav, Bastien, Ballack, Lahm, Podolski, Mario, etc), France and Italy havent been too impressive leading up... (Henry handball is beat, and Italy seemed lazy in almost every game they played (go De Rossi!!)). i think the Netherlands look good, i would go with them as my 2nd choice... (Dirk, Huntelaar, Ryan Babel, Van der Vaart, Wes Sneijder, and Robben). Spain seems like the favorite. but Torres is out, Puyol has been slacking as of late... i just have massive doubts. Sergio Ramos houses, as well as Villa but i guess im hoping they get upset...
also, my friend told me that N. Korea is 1000:1 to win. i doubt this, but if true, i might just put $20 on them.

I wonder who decided that Haiti and Canada would be the best for Argentina of all teams to play before the World Cup? I mean Canada failed to qualify for qualifying, of what value is that friendly to them at all. I hope they enjoy being humbled against legitimate competition.

Seems odd to read this statement. I was pleased with the performance of the U.S. today. A little shaky in defence at times, but all and all a decent warm up. That pitch was fucking shit though.

the french looked very dysfunctional, and i don't think its repairable. i still think they can make it out of that group along with the host nation though.

The World Cup and the olympics are the only times I excuse nationalistic bullshit, but ironically the world cup seems to be the time when Americans are least nationalistic and root for where ever their great grandparents are from. That being said I'm okay with anyone except Italy and Brazil winning, rooting for either of those two is worse than rooting for the lakers or yankees.

I don't care, really. I don't know anyone who's ever bought a WC ball. It only really concerns the ones playing in the tournament and they have always complained about the balls.
Vuvuzelas suck so much. Reminds me of former Soviet countries and their trumpets. Not only is it an annoying sound but you can't hear the chanting and singing, basically there's no atmosphere whatsoever. It could be the most boring or the most exciting match but all you would hear either way would be that awful drone.

Heskey actually playing 'well' was one of the biggest surprises. Though I still would like to see Crouch starting.

This rarely happens, he's recognized that he plays much better if he's subbed in mid-game after he can get a feel for the pace from the sidelines. I think coaches also like Crouch for the last thirty minutes so they can throw desperate crosses his way. Poor guy gets regularly killed on fouls when he goes up against smaller players (pretty much everyone).

Cameras would be a bad move. No this is no good, football needs to do it classically. You can't have stops in play to have video review, football isn't hockey. It wouldn't work the same way. If there's a bad call then that's part of the drama and real-ness of the game, humans make mistakes some times.

No, it wouldn't matter since major bad decisions always cause an argument that usually lasts more than a minute. With a camera the matter would be resolved in less time and more importantly the fair and correct decision would be made by the ref. Bad decisions aren't "drama and real-ness of the game", they're just bad decisions. And often you have refs who lean towards the bigger/better/richer side and make biased decisions throughout the whole match, cameras would definitely help in such situations.

True. The other guy gets a nudge in the chest with an elbow (happens dozens of times in a game) and falls to the ground holding his face. The ref was following the ball and probably didn't even see the foul, or only saw it with the corner of his eye and assumed that Kaka elbowed him in the face.

I recommend watching "Referees at work" if you've got a few minutes to spare. It's a documentary that follows a few well known referees through th Euro 2008, including Howard Webb, Rosetti and Busacca if Im not mistaken.

Well, he did get a red card so he was punished for his "cheating". Besides, it's no more cheating than diving and trying to get your opponent sent off, which happens all the time and the Ghanaians are very much guilty of that. this is the worst refereed set of sporting events ive ever seen. cards on a handball are givin when its done with intention. ive seen 2 intentionals throughout the entire world cup, yet 1 -2 cards handed out for them per game. free kick? yes. yellow card and making this kid miss the simis? and worst case scenerio germany loses, making this his last world cup game? not even close.

I thought Paraguay's work rate and non-stop pressuring of the ball really caused problems for Spain, Torres definitely is nowhere near match fitness, and Alonso and Busquets have hit a rough patch. I've been waiting for Cesc to get a chance to prove himself out there, and he did well when he came on. Same goes for Pedro, who's still very much on form after the great yr he had with barca.
Del Bosque and coaching staff will have no sleep thinking up a plan to get past the "New Germany", because its quite clear Spain's style will play right into the German's counterattacking hands.

Odds are we'll be seeing a Germany - Netherlands final this weekend. Germany's been playing so well and Spain has really been struggling. Netherlands has been looking good and Uruguay barely got by last game. So that's what I think will happen.
However, I would love to see a Spain - Uruguay final with Uruguay taking it. Uruguay's been one of my picks from the start so I'd enjoy seeing them do well. Plus the whole underdog factor would be pretty cool to see.
Either way, there should be some goods matches this week.

You could say that the yellow he gave near the end took up a bit of playing time but it had already been 3 minutes by the time the foul happened (at which point he would have had to check his watch in order to jot down the time at which the card was given into his match log).
Also, Robben's finishing was really poor today with the exception of that beautiful header he scored. He really should have had about two more goals but he kept bottling it once inside the penalty area. I think either Germany or Spain could easily beat them if they play like that in the final, but obviously there will be more motivation given its the final.

even though the ref broke the record of cards given, i still think he made a few glaring errors:
- de jong should have been red carded for his high kick into xabi's chest
- van bommel got lucky that he didn't get a second yellow, because he committed many questionable tackles
- iniesta should have got yellow or red for the retaliation foul against van bommel. it pretty much was in the same retaliatory context that got zidane sent off in '06.
- iniesta should have got a yellow for the flagrant dive he took against van der wiel
i'm still torn though whether heitinga deserved the second yellow.

I can't think of one remarkable incident of them cheating or diving in this game that led to any serious disadvantage to Holland. The only reason the dutch might have pulled fewer dives was because they rarely presented enough of a threat to the opposing teams defense to make them chase them down. Anyway, If you're gonna talk about dives you should look at the way that dutch player went into a barrel roll after iniesta's retaliatory flick of the wrist.
Holland played dirty because they were frustrated that Spain were too good for them in midfield once again and were controlling possession. They deserved all the yellow cards they got and more. Spain played better and deserved to win, sorry.

There were too many yellow cards in the game, that did not mean there were more flagrant dives by Spain. Holland let Spain control the game just like Germany did, they are too strong in the midfield to give them time on the ball.

All these Dutch people bitching and moaning on facebook and on here. The ref made some questionable calls but in no way were they all in favour of the Spanish. Get over it; your team wasn't good enough at the end of the day.
Also, the Dutch were some of the biggest divers in the competition.

What was wrong with the goal? He was onside by 3 yards or so.
I thought the whole game was ugly and slow because it was being stopped for fouls every minute or so but I think it was pretty clear Spain deserved the win. The dutch were playing downright ugly soccer. I hope those players screaming in the ref's face after the goal and after the game about it being offside felt like assholes when they saw the replay and realized they just fucked up and left him wide open and onside. I'm just glad it didn't go to penalty kicks.
However, I would have much rather have had the Germany - Uruguay game be the final as it was far more exciting and fun to watch.

Even Van Marwijk is saying the better team won, I don't know how people can try to take that away from Spain. Utterly classless from Robben and Sneijder to come out and say that the ref robbed them and this and that. Spain taking the FIFA Fairplay award too, comedy.
I wish they played better through the tournament, but I'm glad they won.
Really stoked for Forlan though. Fully deserves the golden ball, great tournament for him. FIFA kind of blew it with their list of contenders though.

The kick on the chest that de jong gave can happen, it's a yellow card.
Demy de zeeuw got a kick in the face and minus 2 teeth and the guy didn't got anything.
heitinga didn't deserve a red card.
Van bommel did
Puyol and iniesta also deserved a red card.
The goal kick where the goal came from actually was a corner because it was touched by 2!!! spanish players.
Spain was better but holland was kind of robbed.
Oh yeah and iniesta had some major schwalbes, he stepped on the foot of a dutch player and iniesta fell on the ground. That's yellow.

I don't know dude, De Jong would probably have gotten sent off for that shit by most other refs. And Iniesta did not deserve a red card at all. The foot he stepped on was there as a result of the tackle that knocked him over and it's silly to say that he should have gotten a straight red for the retaliatory foul. So much shoving goes on in the penalty area or after contested calls that is worse than what he did. The ref I guess understood his frustration after he was knocked over by one of the dudes who had been crawling up his ass all night and responded in a pragmatic fashion.
Puyol probably should have been carded and that goal kick was obviously a totally bogus call but shit happens. Regardless, to say that Holland was robbed is to discount the disgraceful manner in which they were playing for most of the game.
