There's so many injuries that took out champions. Also, on the shady side, dudes plain overlooked because our attention span. If I mention a bunch of "random" dudes who's video parts excite me to this day(even if I didnt skate when all of them were LIT), you could too! Here goes a few at random:
Michah Hollinger, Chris Dobstaff, Mako Urabe, Phillip Schuster, Fabrizio Santos, Don Brown, Chris Lambert, Alex Carolino/Flo Marfaing(probably still fully on it), Alex Moul, Willy Santos, Andrew Langi(at redwood city), and of course myself, and you too! fire em' off but check those out if you havn't seen em..

Yeah Im new and giddy.. But literally anyone is awesome, I'm just a THPS2 skater, so I needed this thread. Ocean Howell was the first dude who made me realize how shitty I've been to discount anything before "current" skateboarding, and that was just a few years ago. Im positive everyone I mentioned would make you look like a sloth, though. It's not like Chad Fernandez is going to reshape the wheel, but I've seen someone 180 nose grind clipper and shit themselves with all their friends without realizing Micah Hollinger did it a decade earlier.. ALL skate videos are relevant for this reason alone. I'm replying as a crusader of the unfashionably fashionable too.
-
Frankie Hill, Randy Colvin and Bill Danforth.
Frankie Hill pushed mongo??
-
Quim Cardona
-
there are a lot of great names on the list so far
in case nobody's added them so far, a few obvious ones:
nate jones
mike rusczyk
frank gerwer's part in six newell
I always liked Logic, Digital, 411, that kind of stuff (thinking of micah hollinger as an example). They'd catch a lot of b-roll and alternate angles after major videos came out, and have parts from dudes who like, didn't have a Globe or World Industries video to film for or whatever. Same with non-board brand videos like All Systems Go, or the Shorty's hardware video, or Krux videos. Local/shop videos like Pack a Lunch out of DC, the Pitcrew videos, Trouble Shooters, Tactical Manual are fun, too.

Cardiel for sure.
If Correa is considered old Renaud is too
not from the same time but definitely the same vein of skateboarding

Dude I did the bushing halving.. It was the craziest years of my life! I had to go back to normalcy for tech love, but it's important to get the feel! Nollie tricks were real fucked up, and actually just threw off the whole game aside from "style" feeling. front feebles are real fuckin hard to get back now. it's perfect for tranny, but at the park, kids will NOT get over the looseness. it's like a gimmick, which my friend stole, then re-upped it with Daewons two washer thing, which he quit too.. its a good ting still.
-
This thread got me watching the old Stereo and 411 videos. So good. Makes most content theses days look so sterile.
-
How about some reasons young dudes should watch the geezers? What is it about their skating that you think would appeal to younger guys?
There is definitely a percentage of names listed that I can't see people understanding what's so special about. It's kinda hard for people to really grasp the idea of context in a bygone era.
For example- I got the Toy Machine box set for Christmas when I was 14, and although I understood the importance of Ed Templeton I always skipped over his parts because I felt like his skating peaked at Heavy Metal.

He could make the ugliest tricks look good. I don't remember ever seeing a nollie back 3 shuv in a part other than his because that trick just doesn't look good. Gailea made it look good.

His Battalion part is one of my favorites and a contender for best of the 00-09 decade.
So much style, grace, and insanely tech skating on huge shit.
Dude is SO overlooked.
Wish he produced more footage :(

although I understood the importance of Ed Templeton
Ed Templeton just for his ability to skate rails the way he does. (or did)... Speaking of rails, a younger person should (correct me if I'm wrong) know that the first skater to kickflip into a rail (lipslide?) was in fact, Heath Kirchart.
