Agreed, Nirvana was completely out of steam by the time Kurt died and I think this was probably a part of his spiral.

Nirvana wasn't out of steam, Kurt was out of steam.
I don't mean creatively though, I'm sure he had decades of good songs in him.
Unfortunately, the source of a lot of those great songs would have been the mental anguish he was going through.
I just think there's an important distinction between that and "they'd exhausted their formula"
I don't believe that Kurt was the kind of songwriter that would rest on his laurels and phone in formulaic albums.

agree to both, michael stipe has said that right before kurt died, they had expressed mutual interest in working with each other so that's a direction that kurt may have explored

"In Utero" was such an interesting departure from "Nevermind" that I'd have loved to see what Kurt would have had up his sleeve next. "Bleach" is incredible and their Unplugged album is a masterpiece (the best maybe, either that or Alice In Chains). Kurt was a pure artist through and through, and I have faith that, were it not for the unbearable stomach pain, he would have continued to progress his art without compromising his integrity.

Agreed that Hole's first album goes very, very hard. "Miss World" is my jam.
