I do not expect this to be the most active thread since house music is not everyone’s cup of tea but since I have been noticing house music pop up in skate videos over the last few years I thought it was time to start one. I searched to make sure there wasn’t one yet, so please forgive me if there was. I saw the electronic music thread that had 28 pages but electronic music is a very broad term and that thread has been inactive since May 2017.
House music is an often misunderstood genre so I’ll start things off with an oversimplified explanation of how it got its name:
The story all starts at an amazing discotheque on 84 King Street in NYC called The Paradise Garage. A dj named Larry Levan became a legend there whose track selection, dj’ing style, and mixing/ production work (https://www.discogs.com/Larry-Levan-Larry-Levans-Paradise-Garage/master/256156) set the foundation for many different dance music scenes that thrive today. Back then people started to call his style and taste in music “Garage.” Basically it was very soulful disco and Rn’B that was fun to dance to and pretty far removed from the commercialized “Disco Duck” type stuff that gained more attention in popular culture.
Among Larry Levan’s dj friends was the one and only Frankie Knuckles. Knuckles moved to Chicago in the late 70’s and was an ambassador of the Garage sound in Chicago. He played as resident dj at a club called The Warehouse at 206 South Jefferson Street. As he inspired the locals with his style, they began calling the music “House Music” over time. By the early 80’s Jesse Saunders, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, and other young producers in Chicago began creating music that officially donned the “House Music” label and the Chicago sound in general became more associated with synthesizers and drum machines than the more live-band disco sound of New York. Of course the two cities went on to influence each other many times and you cannot forget about what was happening in Detroit… the birth of Techno.
Again, this is an oversimplification and I have left out many important details. “Meastro” is a good documentary and will give you a much more detailed account of the formation of this genre. I left out The Loft to keep it neat but the importance of David Mancuso’s private loft parties cannot be overstated.
Enough talk, let’s listen. Here is the first house track that moved me:

i was fortunate to be a teenager in Detroit throughout this period and these are a couple of classics that always bring me back:

the distinction between "house" and "techno" is so important--i grew up on house music but i personally can't name a single "techno" song that i can stomach. i'm definitely feeling what i guess one could call the house aesthetic of a number of recent skate videos and parts--for instance, love this right here and it fits dude's skating really well:

yeah, that's definitely a jam too--would work well in a skate part as well...who would have thought that house tracks would make such incredible music for skate edits...

In my first post I wrote about the origins of house music at the Paradise Garage club in New York. Many in New York continued to call the music they made and enjoyed Garage into the age of house. In the mid 90's US Garage house music scene started to make a big impact in the British electronic music scene. They loved these faster, shuffley beats with a mix of live drum sounds, big basslines, drum machines, and of course the incredible vocals. They even began speeding up the tracks and began looking for tracks that used other kick drum patterns besides the four-on-the-floor as well. This led to the 2 step genre which eventually led to the creation of Dubstep. It is pretty interesting how different cultures talk back and forth to one another.
Here are two US house classics that had a big influence in the UK.
95 North - Let Yourself Go (1995) KULT RECORDS. This duo is from Washington D.C.

Roy Davis Jr. ft. Peven Everett - Gabrielle (Live Garage Version) (1996) LARGE MUSIC. Roy Davis Jr. and Peven Everett are from Chicago.

This thread it tight. I actually just heard Frankie Knuckles for the first time (recommendation based on Inner City) this weekend and was blown away. Looking forward to checking some of this other stuff out.

fuck ya. gonna be checking this thread out more. i first got introduced to house & dance music from my cousin in the 90s who’d play all these mix tapes, but have no idea what/who they are now. some of these artists are new, and some are familiar. thanks for dropping knowledge dudes!

there’s a lofi/deep house station i listen to on siriusxm, it’s pretty cool. but i can’t differentiate the difference between the genres just yet.
but it would be cool to see what the more og heads have to say about dudes like ross from friends or mall grab and the sort. the music fit really well on yaje and bobby worrest parts.

I did gravitate toward Lo Fi house when I first started dj'ing in 2011 but I ended up following the trail of influences and gravitating toward music that did not intentionally try to sound aged. I only select music that would sound great on a big system. Effects can be used in a well produced track for sure.
Since I’ve only been into house music for 10 years I cannot speak for old heads. There are folks that go to House in the Park ATL and the Chosen Few picnic in Chicago every year who were into this music before anyone called it garage or house.

Oh yeah ghetto house and ghetto tech are directly related to house music especially through the record label Dance Mania from Chicago which dates back to the classic house days but released a large portion of ghetto house too.
I did jot down the tracklist loosely while I was mixing on my CDJ's. I left out some track names, if I have time I'll edit:
Harry Wolf - Uncle Buck (Brame & Hamo Remix)
G Spice
Kerri Chandler - Track 1
Kiko Navarro - Any Way I Want
Freight Train -
The Untouchables - Dance to the Rhythm (Dj T Remix)
My System Echo - Revival (Ron Bassjam Remix)
Art of Tones - Gimme Some More
Souldrifter - Set Me Free
Deep Future - Attraction
Angelo Ferreri - I’m Surprise (Studioheist Remix)
Peter Brown - Welcome to the Party
Alex Ranerro - Enigma
Blaze - Loveleee Dae

It’s actually a great time to just get into them. They started the label back up recently and are repressing a lot of the classics on wax and putting them out digitally as well of course. For a while expensive resale copies were the only option.

The first track is MAURICE - This Is Acid (A New Dance Craze) which is strongly reminiscent of Royal House - Party People (Royal House was one of Todd Terry's many aliases) which is a play on Marshall Jefferson - Move Your Body (House Music Anthem).
Adonis - No Way Back is also in there. It might actually be another version but that is where that bass line originated.
All these are sped up significantly.
Not sure if that helps because there are other tracks thrown in there too.

Today's mix is more stripped back and hard hitting than Tuesday's. I apologize for the few skips that occur on the second track. There are around four skips within a stretch of about 30 seconds around the 8:30 minute mark. After that the rest is good. I need new CDJ's.

i thought this track should of blown up, still only 900 views on the tube. sounds like how slipping in and out a k hole feels with them breaks, its like ahh shit, now im dead.

side note i never got the raving and mdma connection aside from the history, too intense and sleepy, i be curled up on the floor straight trippin hand dancin. acid or amphetamine all day, methylone was good too. dutch bros still got access to 4fa though, that shit was the fucking bestest.
i mean i can always feel the groove sober but... ya know

Yeah I don't get the drugs thing. Never been into that. I drank a lot of coffee and abstained from alcohol the last time I had to dj really late (6am). I feel like I played the best set and being relatively sober definitely contributed to that. You can't dj well if you are sloppy and all over the place.
Nothing wrong with a little herb of course. But drugs? Nah. If I need an upper: coffee, tea, or mate should do just fine.
-
ahh man drugs and tunes is peas n a pod peanut butter jelly, cool you do sets though/get paid, im just a house party sound rocker. pop a couple adderal next time and see how on point it is though. dj'ing is pretty overrated nowdays with everyone not doing it by ear and just using software but when you got the party rockin with you hyped its the shit. usually bump alot of brazil style (sex house i call it) cause im usually dealing with basic niggas and bitches drinking and the bitches really get down to it, hits em right in the pussy, cant get too wierd with it cause then people get that wtf is going on face. id be super dope to bump to a wierdo crowd that just came for the music though.

I've DJ'd 2 things. One was a skate competition. They had me set up my tables on the bed of a truck and people kept jumping in the bed or whatever. I'd just watch the needle slide across the LP. It was horrible.
The other event I DJ'd was some graduation party or something. I was spinning house and this kid got a mic somewhere and plugged it in and started freestyle rapping over what I was playing. He was horrible. My buddy Alastair was like, "Let's see him freestyle over this," and he put on Window Licker. That shut the motherfucker down. It was also a horrible gig. But that shit makes me giggle every time I think of it.
Hoping to play out somewhere someday like 4 real.

If you've done it, what's it like? Is it scary? Is it rad? I'd have to imagine it's a fucking stoke-fest. Have you ever had any equipment failures?

GAY you should play out! If I were you I wouldn’t be too nervous since you obviously have the technical skills to mix records and you have a good selection of tunes. Playing out was quite nerve wracking for me when I was still getting my skills up. I was justified in being nervous lol.
Technical failures - yes, lol, especially when I was playing all vinyl. So much can go wrong. I still collect vinyl but I prefer to record them and play them digitally. It’s really a treat for me to play a real gig because they have pioneer cdj’s and mixers. I mix on shitty tiny Stanton cdj’s and a Vestax mixer at home. The other dj’s trip because so don’t use recordbox. I probably should check that program out.
I live in a small town (Chattanooga, TN) so there aren’t lots of opportunities to DJ. Luckily we have an amazing monthly warehouse club night and they will book me to open a couple times a year. I will get the odd booking every now and then. I probably play out like 4 times a year at this point. I wish it was way more but it’s a small town with few opportunities and I gave up on trying to organize events a long time ago. Way too much pressure and I’m not good at it. I’m happiest when dancing or dj’ing - I don’t want to worry about convincing people to come out for the night.

I've started digging into Rekordbox and have to say it's pretty awesome. I'm trying to come up with proper tags for my tracks that mean something to me so that I can search and sort by those tags. It's very database heavy but also does some rad stuff all on its own. And it's free so you can definitely check it out in little steps to see if you dit it whatsoever.

I’m sure I don’t do this the best way but here is how:
CDJ’s > Dj Mixer — Yamaha Mixer < My speakers setup from the main out/ my Zoom H4N recorder from the monitor out.
After I have recorded in WAV format I open the file in Audacity (free), amplify it, and export it as a 320 MP3 with tags.
If I had a fancy Pioneer mixer I could directly record the mix to a USB or laptop. I have pretty cheap equipment but it gets the job done. Hopefully I’ll have a Pioneer setup soon.
Uploading the MP3 to mixcloud is super simple.

Not much of a fan of ghetto house but I do remember there was this one track...I think it was DJ Funk? (honestly that could be totally wrong) and the words were just like,
"Your grandma
your auntie
your sister's a slut
Your grandma
your auntie
your sister's a slut
slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut slut
Your mother
Your daddy
Your brother's a bitch
Your mother
Your daddy
Your brother's a bitch
bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch bitch"
That song was ridiculous and I find myself singing it to myself a lot

This is such a sick mix GAY. In particular, thank you for putting me on to Tuccillo - Questions.
You have inspired me to get a little more tech with my selections and work the effects a bit to bring a little extra feeling into the tracks. It's tricky for me since my CDJ's don't display WAV forms so I have to either really know the track well or lately I have been pulling the tracks up on Audacity and kind of following along so I can anticipate key moments in the music.
I have been recording a ton of mixes but since I'm trying new stuff I haven't been uploading them.

Dude, thank you for the kind words.
Yeah, I have to say that the waveform visual is such an advantage. Before this year I only ever used 12"s and remember using the record reflecting the light to let me know when a break was coming or something like that...this is leagues beyond that obviously. I still keep that count going in my head, but even that can mess me up sometimes because producers do cool stuff that doesn't necessarily stick to the strict 32 beats/64 beats/128 beats chqnge structure. I tend to use the zoomed out waveform view where I'm seeing the whole track because it has a setting where different sections display in different colors...I'm guessing it's based on amplitude? But it gives such a quick snapshot of the various sections in each track.
Anyways, I can't wait to listen to your new mix on Monday.

Dan, at the risk of going overboard with my compliments... this mix is an absolute masterpiece. Start to finish. I kept picturing myself in Berlin's Panoramabar at 4am which was a nice escape from the Wednesday morning work I was doing. The track selection - damn. The transitions - damn (nice and long too!). The arc - damn.
This is what I want to hear whenever I'm in the mood for some techy house. Great textures.

Dude thank you so much for your kind words. There's some great stuff in there. That track that just keeps repeating "Future" over and over was the one that made me decide to start spinning again. I was thinking how much fun it would be to mix something like that and had to ask myself, "Why aren't you doing this thing you want to do?"
Anyway, thanks for making me feel great this morning. So stoked you like this mix, man. I was really trying to make the mixes last a bit because I love when two songs layer to become one new song.

Here's a funny Moodymann story (or at least I find it funny):
I used to shop at Tweakin' Records in San Francisco and one time I was in there and they were playing this amazing track by Moodymann...I think it's called "You can dance if you want to". Incredible song. So fucking loopey and funky. Anyways, I asked about it and the girl working there showed me where it was. I took it home with me. The label on that particular copy only said "justanothanigga from detroit" on it and so I had no idea who it was by, but I thought it said "Justano tha nigga" so I always wondered who Justano was.
Yes I'm an idiot.
FOUND IT!

I’ve seen Nina spin twice and she killed it both times. Her early tracks on Underground Quality still slap, I have her EP with the brown colored vinyl. Back when she did that RA mix in ‘11 or ‘12 that put me on to so many good tracks that led me down the path to find so many good records.
-
If we’re talking techno baes my preference would be to Amelie Lens haha
(https://66.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lij6kwyYzn1qza84qo1_400.gifv)
Nina has said some questionable stuff and was some what “cancelled” I thought, but maybe not since that beatport livestream thing is recent. Her label has some amazing releases on it though.. like that Bjarki track.. never heard a bigger kick drum in my life!

Pardon me for over posting but I couldn't help myself and recorded a new mix.
I work in the design field and have huge project right now which involves a lot of repetitive computer work. I've found myself listening to a lot of techno mixes during this time so I figured I would let that influence my normally house-oriented style.
Dan, I borrowed that track Tuccillo - Questions YET AGAIN since trainspotting it from one of your mixes. It just works so perfectly for blending techno and house vibes, something you do really well.
I hope everyone is healthy and happy. I can't wait till I can actually get out and dance in person. Till then, here are some tunes for the house:

You're the best man. You made my day.
Yeah there are a couple in here that I'm kind of obsessed with right now. "Busman's Holiday" by Ed The Spread is the kind of track I dream of hearing out at a good club...it's completely bonkers and stupid in the best way, the beat is so incredibly driving, it keeps you guessing as a listener...just amazing.

There is some good music in that mix but it is strange and misleading for the youtube channel to call the mix "Detroit House Music." I don't think any of those producers are from Detroit, MI, especially the exceedingly annoying and tellingly named Detroit Swindle. I'm glad they included at least one black American producer, Black Jazz Consortium a.k.a. Fred P, but he is from New York City. I understand that the Detroit House music scene, exemplified by masters such as Moodymann, Theo Parrish, Mike Huckaby (RIP), Marcellus Pittman, Omar-S, etc. has a particular sound that people around the world listen to and are inspired by, but it's really weird to fake the funk calling this a Detroit House mix. Thankfully the world of house music is waking up to disrespectful appropriation of Black American culture, thanks in large part to Ash Lauryn, an amazing dj, producer, and journalist in Atlanta, GA. So much cringeworthy colonizer activity took place in the house and techno scenes for forty years but people are finally calling it out. Sorry for the rant. It's a tricky subject. I'm white and I am obsessed with house music and other black musical forms but I try to do them honor and justice and present them and participate in them with respect. Generally, the situation is getting better. People are learning the true stories of this great music. I remember talking with ignorant Germans back in 2011 who had no idea techno was from Detroit. They then went on to do horrendous blaccent and talk about how "gangsta" America is. It was really depressing.
Sorry again for the long rant, none of that energy was directed at you @lemonchicken91, thanks for sharing cool tunes with us.

Glad there are some heads here on SLAP! Thanks also for sharing those Bristol tunes. I absolutely love the Nature Unit track. I am putting that track in my bandcamp cart for sure! https://blankmindlabel.bandcamp.com/album/nature-unit
Bristol has so much great talent. I particularly like Peverelist. I would love to visit Bristol one day and shop at Idle Hands record shop and go to some clubs. The city has such a great take on garage, house, techno, etc.

Hell yes, thanks! Peverelist is great too. Livity Sound has been on a tear lately, The last 3 releases were all top notch.
It’s particularly interesting for me to watch the Bristol scene because you can see how ideas and production techniques from dubstep, which used to be huge there transfer over into house and techno, along with jungle and IDM influences.

This is a well written and interesting post. I've only recently learned of the real history of Chicago and Detroit house. In my brain it always seemed like a European white guy thing but it was crazy to learn the origins were similar to hip hop and its quick spread throughout different cultures worldwide

Oh fuck yes.
I've got all of these except for the Phoenix on Vinyl. I went bonkers for the Roule and Crydamore sound and bought every bit of it I could find. And the one Scratche (sp?) release by Buffalo Bunch. So good. Crydamore particularly had a bizarre, bright sound that is unmatched and bizarre. Very formative stuff for me.

Whats up House thread slappers. Thought I'd drop a mix in here, although a bit contrary. This one's a mix of darker disco, 80s, synthy sounding, latin slappin, energizer beats that are great for that... well something you like I'm sure. Love it, hate it, fuck it. Idk.

Back to hawk another mix of mine!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ER2mDIPXYg
A couple of house b-side DJ tools mixed in with some dubby stuff, some steppy stuff, and some straight up dad rock. trying to make some sense of my records i've been buying and the stuff i listen to day to day. also trying to make some edits here and there to pull out parts of tracks that I want to zero in on.
@GAY , some of the productions you've been posting on IG have been really sick 8)

Just uploaded this track over the weekend. It's the first I've made entirely on the little Dirtywave M8 Tracker...such a fun device. Anyways...this is for those into house music. Also posted this in the "Post your music" thread or whatever it's called, but figured you guys might appreciate it more in here.
Hope everybody is great this holiday season. If you're not, DM me and we'll commiserate.

This is great. I've recently (last few years) gotten back into house after going almost 15 years without really listening to it. Those lofi house mixes on Youtube re-ignited my love for it. They have been my jam recently. I can totally hear your track included on one of them.
Looking forward to more them. Keep em' coming

Rad! Definitely check out Intr0beatz...his music is amazing and his mixes are, to me, some of the best. He's my current hero and I think people put him into the lofi category.

Rad! Will give this a listen whilst sweating it upon the elliptical tomorrow.
Also, I’ve come to love hiccups and mistakes in a mix. They tell me that a person made it rather than an algorithm and mistakes are a major part of the human experience.
