RIP Travis Graves aka Mt. Egypt
« on: September 01, 2023, 08:23:12 PM »
I know he's gotten some love in past posts so I figured it was appropriate enough to give him an IM post.

I first met Travis when he was 13 and I was 14. He and his best friend Greg Gardner were these two kids in affluent Walnut Creek and at that age, they had their own fully formed styles (Greg rode for Powell for a time). The way they dressed and the way they skated. It was shocking how precocious they were.

(forgive the weird part about Bainbridge Island at the end)

Damn I only knew Mt. Egypt’s music from Time to Shine credits but I always loved that song. Had no idea he was an East Bay skater, crazy to see San Ramon spots in that video. RIP

I believe he teaches you how to kickflip in Thrasher’s “How to Skateboard Better” and I absolutely loved his style. RIP

Woah, I was just thinking of him a few weeks ago. I tried to look him up online but couldn’t find anything .. presumably because he shares a name with a bull rider.

Truly sad to hear about this.

Skated with him a few times when he moved to Santa Monica/Venice Beach.

I fondly remember his unusual approach to skateboarding, sometimes just pushing gracefully in circles for long periods doing backside 180s, like he discovered some secret level of enlightenment (or was just high).

Came across this the other night.

There was no wire. Clark's planet needed him.
Note: Clark Hassler died on the way back to his home planet.

In 2002 I flew from UK to CA to meet a friend and go up to SF. We headed up there to stay with his friend Travis Graves. Long story, but my friend had some family shit and after a couple days had to bail. I wanted to stay in SF, but barely knowing Travis it was kinda awkward. But he immediately made it clear that I could stay as long as I wanted, and I ended up staying with him for a month. I have some of the fondest memories ever of that time. He'd just got his record deal and was working at HUF. A wildly hilarious and talented dude, who was a great conversationalist. I'll never forget his generosity and that month in SF. RIP.

Thank you for sharing. I remember this well! My neighbor hoarded Stereo boards when they shut down. It’s a refreshingly brutal series of answers backed by a stylish and sick trick. 23 is young.
