got the chance to meet him at his pub a while back and he's definately the nicest pro ive ever met. the place was packed and there were a ton of top industry pro's and photographers there and he still took out about an hour of his time to chat and play me in a few games of pool. one of the greatest people ever.
-
Hensley is defenately sick. And Flogging Molly is a great band. It's a win win.
-
I still have a pair of his original duffs in mint condition, they're pretty sweet
-
I still have his h-street sit down dude silhouette t-shirt in over washed rag condition to the untrained eye, but a total cherished memory to me. It's grayed (ex-black) and will stink however I washed it.

fuckin gnar
thats that dude! dudes a legend.
-
I love that picture of him in the same TWS interview where he does a backside ollie on a bank in the afternoon sun, and there's also some jock in a Nike shirt jogging there. One of my fave skate pictures ever. Can somebody scan it?
-
Know where you came from? Skateboarding today is nowhere near where Hensley was at sixteen years ago.
Someone posted that photo of him in '92 skating in Seattle a while back. Somebody post it. It's him ollieing on a giant cowboy hat.
-
Sturt deserves half the credit, however, for making this image timeless.

its about time,nothing but respect
-
Goddamned right! Hensley and Barbier probably had more of an effect than anyone while I was growing up skating... but Matt just fucked up people's minds. I went through seven King Sizes as a kid, too. One of my favorite boards ever.
-
The hat and boot photo is so sick. Dudes raw.
-
Sturt deserves half the credit
WRONG.
Sturt is lucky that he got to shoot it.
-
I was so into Hensley that I used to wear the same green army cargo pants cut off into shorts every day
(with chain wallet of course), because I read in one of his interviews that was what Matt did. He was the man.
-
I remember searching for a smiliar shirt that he had on at the high ollie contest forever ago.
maybe it said hawaii 88?
i got the 2 black label re issues of his window and king sizes graphics.
-
did he have a part in that duff's video?
always seemed rad, one of the orginator's of skaters having like a stylsh-non-costume look
hensley ftw
-
one of the true untouchables. from the first seconds of shackle me not and his early gullwing video footage...became one of the greats. and as someone said, always made the time to talk to everyone and made you feel like you weren't a grommet but someone worth talking to. was lucky to meet him after the london hokus pokus premiere in the OG slam city and talk about records and bands for a bit, a cherished memory for sure.
the blunt to mayday on the bank to wall is one of THE gnarliest tricks ever, the flip backside melon over the bin, the picnic table to nosewheelie, the backside nosebluntslides, bench high backside lipslides, the one foot variations, the miniramp 540 one foot, so much given to skateboarding.
i've been wanting one of those gullwing 'inside out' tees for almost 2 decades now. i might just print my own

same for me, after natas it was all about Hensley
anyone know the story with why he retired? seems like he quit while he was still way on top of the game.
-
Coming home from an H-Street demo I got picked up hitchhiking in (I think) 1988 by a van. The van door opened and Matt Hensley and Ron Allen were inside. I can't even tell you how stoked I was. Definitly my coolest hitch-hiking experience.
-
I got really stoked on his no comply-o-rama line in uh...I think it was Shackle Me Not.
Keep in mind, I saw this video for the first time in like 1995 or so at the time it was -really- different.
His bar is down in Oceanside CA. Next time I head down south, I'll check it out. I'll gladly throw a couple of bucks down for a Guinness from Hensley.

the spot light wasn't for him....too much pressure.
-
crazy how he was the biggest street pro out and he just dropped out and these days you have so many pros hanging when they are way past their prime

me too, me too! i was in a 'media blackout' for my first few years skating, so that guys like the gonz, hosoi, and tony hawk didnt really influence me. but hokus pokus came out and i was hooked on both skating and skate media... for the first three years of high school my locker was plastered top to bottom and back to front with hensley ads from TWS.
i remember some interview where he talked about blowing almost all of the $350,000 he made in his first years as a pro...
