People always wanna talk about width but it’s the fuckin wheelbase that matters.

This is the truest sentiment in skate nerdery

i'm trying real hard not to get into this wheelbase shit but you lunatics are making it real hard.

but seriously half the decks i see in the shop don't have any wheelbase info, don't tell me you walk into your local with a measuring tape.

I would say any reputable shop will have a tape measure

as i don't have a local skateshop (well there's one but it only has jart boards and i'm not buying that shit) i have to order boards from other shops that have online stores and i always ask them to measure the wheelbase before i buy a board.

Bro I went from 7.875 to 8.1 and it was huge! Then I got a 8.5 and that was also huge! With decks, it all makes a difference but if you can, go to a store and look at different sizes and shapes yourself.

Okay, I won't tell you then. But I do. What are they going to do, laugh? My self-esteem is fine, so laugh away. ;)

Do they measure boards in centimeters in the rest of the world?

Only thing that matters in my eyes is the shape, wheelbase or size dont even cross my mind. Real talk if you work in or own a shop with just a concrete floor, put a piece of carpet next to the decks so people can stand on em. Im not buyin a board I cant stand on first.

In Japan some of the online shops convert the sizes to metric, as they never grew up with the imperial system and is seems weird as fuck, as it indeed is.

Funny i just bought a toothpick never rode one ever in 20+ years and wanted to switch it up. Skated 8-8.5. Can't say id ever do it again right now. Needs more testing. Feels ridiculous. Like going from loose to tight trucks or vice versa.

No but don't believe all the hype around the metric system either, we really measure everything in boards which is the common standard here: 'this street gap is four boards long', 'I need a board-and-a-half high desk for my office', etc... Centimeters are for kooks, but whenever communication is needed the most practical reference point is 1 brd (board) = 80 cm aka. the required minimum in high ollie zones.

Same shit as Fahrenheit vs. Celsius, we actually measure that shit in heat here, don't get fooled.

What kind of skateshop doesn't have a measuring tape?

Truck width makes a bigger difference to me. Going from an 8/8.125 on 147s to 8.25 on 148s was huge. I love the extra real estate for getting into grinds but it takes forever to rotate.

It depends on the concave. A flat 8" can feel much wider than an 8" with a steeper concave. Some distributions (like PS Stix) also have weird measurements so an 8" from them will feel different than a DLX one.

personally i find the ease/difficulty of flipping the board changes a lot in just a quarter inch

but I can only really speak for 1/4 inch increments between 8 and 8.5.

i don't skate anything bigger/smaller than that

Let me preface this post with the fact that I am slightly inebriated, very uneducated and I havent read any papers or done any research at all, or read your post really.
