The kick flip back tail
« on: November 29, 2022, 12:09:12 AM »
Have u ever done one?

I did one when I was 15 on a box at the skate park. I’m 30 now

I went parallel to the box and then did a kick flip (which I had dialled at that time), and I kind of willed the tail with my mind into the ledge, and it slid for a bit and I came out.

I love Stefan janoskis kicnflip back tails

33 skater dad over here ;D
last year I worked 3 blocks from a skateplaza, so every lunch break it was session time, all gear and clothes in the trunk
I managed to land a few nbd for me and kickflip back tail was one of them.

-my back tails always sucked hard so I invested a lot of time and sessions working on them, to regs and to fakie. I do still suck at them but learned how not to die while trying in the process
-quick kickflip its mandatory, find your right spot in the board to make them consistently
-shoulders as paralell to the ledge as you can
-try to land of top of the ledge (tail) a little squatted so you can balance
-try a lot on a non skateable ledge so I you got the motion
-and after 70 tries you might get one as I did
-never try again  ;D

I learned it before bs tails. I still can't bs tail, haven't done a single one because I'm always sticking. But for some reason if I kickflip into it it just slides without any resistance. It's so much easier for me

i have done one, just one. it's a trick that's in some ways easier than a regular back tail (which i have done a couple of times but most of the time i can't even get into them) because the board flips into the ledge but at the same time it's harder because you have to catch the kickflip and land into a back tail. i like ollie back tails more though.

Number 1 bunted trick I’ve seen. Dudes  who can’t really skate whip into them to look good at the park.

Maybe done 100-150 of them. Maybe slid about 200 feet total. Done some switch even worse.

I’ve done one on a skate park box like ten years ago. I haven’t done one since but I have back tails pretty good. I feel like I could do it again but I just haven’t really put in the time trying it. Would rather learn switch back tail at this point.

Haha, thanks man. It's all in the shoulders, really. You wanna keep your shoulders open and parallel to the ledge.

in my prime (which ended in 2004), I could do kf back tail shove-its. I was all about kickflipping into everything at that time, but once I got the kf back tail, I felt pretty confident all around in my skating. To me it just looks the best. have not kickflipped into a grind or slide since like 2013 due to my left ankle being complete trash. It is a gross feeling to know that you will probably never do something again, that at one time made you feel pretty awesome.

It’s either within 15 tries or none at all. I do one every 3 years. Next one in 2025  8)

this is my ultimate dream trick but i think it might be beyond me.

that said i've got most of the stuff i had on my dream list when i restarted so we'll see.

just learned fs tails a couple of weeks ago, so at least i know i can get my tail on a ledge at least.

When it comes to kickflipping into grinds you want to aim the flick at the grind, if that makes any sense. Before locking into whatever slide or grind it is the flick should already be complete and in the position of the grind before making contact with the obstacle.

That advice may seem kind of obvious but it may help.

I'm pretty good at flat so I can flip into a back tail pretty easily, but I suck at ledges so don't think I've ever slid one properly in my life. Been trying it for about 10 years now

Came really close to landing one a few months ago, one of those land on the board and instantly fell off attempts  :-\ then got injured a month later and its been eating me up wanting to get healthy again to redeem myself.

Did a KF back Suski on the tiniest DIY box by accident tho and that felt pretty cool  8)

might have to completely relearn them probably.
i used to have them before i had regular backtails way back in the day. nowadays i can backtail quite ok but i cannot do flip backtail anymore.
couple of years ago (at least 8 maybe 6) when all we did was skate the rather high ledge at the new skatepark i was pretty decent at doing flip backtails on there with some solid slide, and even flip backtail shuvit out. never got to land a kickflip backside tailslide bigspin out though, even if i came quite close.
damn, thinking of all of this, makes me juiced to go out an relearn fucking kickflip backside tailslides. thanks g

I did more kickflip back tails than back tails.
Imo it’s easier to flip your board into a back tail than popping and turning into a normal backside tailslide.
Maybe because backside flips always felt good to me. The bs ts was always my favorite trick but I never had them down.now I’m too old to learn them unfortunately.
When I have time to skate I like to do the stuff I’m good at.I don’t want to sit at home thinking a wasted my little skate time I have trying a trick a can’t do proper for over 20 years now. Old men problems I guess.

Never.
But I really want to do one, but I never really even try it. I should put some actual effort into it someday.

Did my last one when i was in my 20s like 10 years ago, can't remember. Had them good for awhile, now struggling with regular backtails... Trick feels so good when you stick it.

This thread is inspiring. Always wanted to do this trick, it’s one of those moves that is just a skaters skater trick.

I’m 35 and landed my first two (awful) back tails last year. I’m gonna huck a few flips into them next sesh, never even tried before because it seemed so far out of my league but reading that some of you find it easier to flip in gives me one single grain of hope.
