Title: Awkward/Awful Roommate Stories
Post by: posguy on November 12, 2014, 12:58:16 PM
So we've all had awkward/awful roommates at one time or another. Post up your stories here! I've got quite a few but I will leave two here to start out.

1) So this was awkward at the time but looking back, pretty awesome. My two roommates who moved into the apartment in Philly became great friends. One was gay and the other was bi and had a girlfriend. This didn't stop them from being amazing roommates. One time when I was in my room they committed to standing outside my door for a good 5-10 minutes before I walked out and to my surprise, one was on his knees in front of the other one who was completely naked. They just looked up at me and laughed and walked back into their room.

2) Fuck this guy. I knew this guy Andrew for a bit before moving in with him. Looking back all the warning signs were there and I was an idiot for not seeing them. Bottom line is this guy was possibly the biggest piece of shit in the world. I should've expected everything that followed due to his looking like an abercrombie model as well as working there... what the fuck was I thinking?! Quick rundown of the shit he pulled
- broke up with his girlfriend on a weekly basis. The breakups got progressively worse. First was a simple door shut. Then a mild hard closing of the door. Then a hard slam. Then a hard slam so hard it shook the frame. She would sit outside and kick our door. She slept outside our door a couple times. All a while he would tell me not to go out for fear of her getting in. She probably knew he was cheating on her. She ended up breaking our door frame.
- He was an absolute pig. Never cleaned up his room or his dishes, which were mine, and continually brought them into his room so I would end up not having any dishes. I came back to grab some stuff after moving out and peeked around his room, he had fruit flies in his closet from chinese food containers that were moldy, stains all on the carpet, the management said he had completely ruined the carpet in there and they had to re-carpet the whole room.
- He put some weird brown foundation kind of stuff all over his body and then proceeded to use my towels, which were white of course. Then denied it and blamed it on his girlfriend.
- shit in the bathtub one night, denied it was him, blamed it on me.
- Never moved his shit out.
-

Kicker was since I was the more "repsonsible" (right?! haha) person, I headed up the contract and put my forwarding address. Well they sent me the security deposit minus what they paid to fix the room/get his stuff out of there but they didn't fine us for breaking the lease, so the end amount was $700-$800. I had established that I wanted out of this situation as quickly as possible and his parents were MIA and he would mediate between us but I didn't trust him so I kept logging reports with out apartment. Guess they felt bad for me and were disgusted by him so they rewarded me. The check had his name, my name and our parents names. I went and deposited that shit in the ATM and tell him it never arrived. He talked to the management and they outed me and he got all bitchy claiming fraud till I said my name was on it too and I had deposited it via ATM so he had nothing on me. Tried to give me some money a little bit later but I didn't give a shit and didn't meet up. I heard he went to jail for insurance fraud or something. Karma was kind to me that day.

When I was 19, my roommate was 24 and refused to buy me beer.

My last roommates grew pot when the lease and pg&e were in my name, hiked the bill way up.

One of them would go to the gym everyday, come home and put his sweaty ass clothes in the dryer.

I'm glad I'm married.

I also had a "lesbian" housemate who threatened to kill herself several times. So glad she left.

I had a roommate who would blast "Brick House" on repeat at 8:30 in the morning. He would also cough until he threw up, all while there was a TB scare on my campus.

One night freshman year I got black out drunk and was acting stupid so my friend put me to bed in my dorm room. He was worried I may have had alcohol poisoning or drown in my puke so he came to check on me a few hours later. He opened the door and saw my roommate pulling his pud in the dark with me passed out in my bed. Never felt completely comfortable falling asleep from that point on.

I roommated with a girl for a year. Let's just say she got made every month for no reason. Fucking drove me insane. I brought a girl home once and she went off on me just yelling how rude it was. As payback, she literally brought a guy home and was extra loud for no reason.

This thread rules:

So I went to Community College for two years and got an associates degree in Fine Arts, only to decide that being an art teacher is impossible these days, due to the fact that the GOP puts little value in education in general, and since "art is hardly a subject"

I am currently a Social Work Major at a state school, and my first year here, I roomed with a friend and three other people I did not know. To tell you the truth, I had it really good. These roommates were people that were either working on their Masters degree or about to graduate, except one fuck, who basically went to school to party and be a slag in every shape and form.

So to make a long story short, when the time came for the electric to be put in someone's name, I agreed, as I knew that it would get done, blah blah blah, and this guy, barely knowing me, began to immediately short me or ask for money to cover him, but he would always be smoking weed, making steaks, and drinking beer.

My idiot manager called me the pussy and said that kid is doing the right thing, living it up, but I lost it. When the time came to move out, he shorted me 70.00, and never returned my texts, so him being the last one to move out and room unlocked, I poured a bunch of trash in his room, that he left around the house, and kindly left the landlord a note.

The best part is that I did get my security deposit back.

All in all, fuck roommates, no matter what, live by yourself, commute like I do, and you'll maintain sanity.

Long story short: I had a roommate that dated this slutty chick. Fucking annoying bitch thinking her shit don't stink. They would fuck in his room and she was so obnoxiously loud. His bed was super squeaky and by the sound of the squeak, he must of been humping at the speed of light. Also his bed was on wheels and you could hear it rolling around the room on the wood floors. Must have been kind of fun for him I guess but it really irked me. They would break up on the daily and he would lock her out and she'd be yelling screaming and crying Nd banging to let her in. This was every other day until one time she got the nerve to dookie on our front door mat. My other roommate takes a pic of it and posts it on Facebook and tags her in it with the caption "I think my roommate just got dumped". And I haven't seen her since.

Totally agree. I live in SF and if I didn't have rent control, I'd probably rather live far away by myself rather than live with a roommate.

On behalf of bentmode, I'll turn this thread around from being full of people bitching to owning up to myself being a shitty roommate.

Bentmode and I lived together for like 3 or so years i think? Maybe more?
Lemme begin

1.) Homeboy would work at 6am and would ride his bike a solid 8 miles to work, so you factor in awaking, showering, and ride time you've got to be out the door no later than 515am. My sole means of income was selling pot and I had very little financial responsibilities outside of rent, I would stay up loud as fuck constantly until 2 in the morning. My bad dude.

2.) After waking up at like 4:30am, working all day, and riding home, I would still harp home boy to go skate every fucking day. Understandable anyone would be tired, but I was a delinquent at the time and had not experienced working mornings. Not comprehending his exhaustion I would talk mad shit about the lack of skating being done over other activities such as watching laker games. Douche move on my part, whoops!

3.) Dude dated this older college chick who was really into the more refined things in life: theatrical performance, poetry, independent movies, photography, etc gayness. Instead of complimenting and encouraging happiness being found for a friend, I would showcase the amount of gayness going down at the time (beyond this though i still think all that shit is lame as all fuck). Blowing it on my part again.

4.) Inb4 more regular shit I did/do. Sorry in advance bro.

Who else is going to own up?

one roomate admitted raping a chick he piked up at a bar -threw his shit outside moved him out.   I have another story thats funny tho I had a beautiful italian roomate and i got home and she was happily cleaning the kitchen and she asked me, "hey what are these little tiny brown things and the bottom cuboard?" and she holding some of it and I said, "thats mouse shit" and the look on her face was priceless.

I lived with Germans a few years ago and they would put their shoes in the dryer, asking is that annoying?  Yeaah it's annoying considering if you clog your shoes with newspaper it's dry. They also spoke German which is annoying in any language, I picked it up a bit but still. Plus side they were organized, and hardworkers, I would recommend Germans over most foreign cultures.

Living with a black guy from Grenada was awful. He smelled like crap and actually did shit in a bag at work and tossed it because he didn't want to stink up the break room (who the fuck cares?)

Fools talking about live by yourself, not everyone has $900 monthly to rent a city apartment, it's much better if you can split a house with actual breathing room and freedom. Bigger it goes more cost effective it gets. I would rather live with 6 peeople in a 4 bedroom than 3 in a 2 bedroom

That's a bad roomy no doubt. There's 80 Million Germans so there's no equal there, I've seen polar opposites on both ends.

On the whole Germans work hard and are smart. Caribbean residents though, lazy and unsanitary. I could care less about your bodily health just keep the place clean.

I found kiddy porn on my ex roommates computer one time while he was at work. A whole hard drive dedicated to that shit. It made me sick to my stomach when I finally realized what it was. I ended bailing at the end of the month and haven't seen this dude for over a decade now. Everything about this dude's personality started to make sense after that whole episode. I've been on the solo tip ever since.

Freshman year of college I had a roommate called B-Dog from Dorchester, MA. Total Southie who would say shit like "yeah, I hate all minorities, I once pushed a black kid in front of a train" and "is he a fuckin Jew?!" and "are you tryin ta kike me?".

He could put away a 20 beers in a night, which eventually led to me coming home one morning with him standing there naked saying "I pissed my fuckin bed!", an event that was repeated a handful of times. I'd come home from an early class and see his black comforter hanging over the dorm balcony steaming in the frigid winter air.

There was a stretch where the remote to his TV was lost, which he accused us of doing so he would constantly harangue us with "Where's my fuckin clicka?!!" (He later sheepishly admitted finding it under his bed)

He didn't like me much but he disliked my other roommates more, emptying his ashtray on my one roommate's bed and possibly pissing on it too. Eventually my other roommates moved out.

One morning my girlfriend woke up and realized B-Dog was peeking in the door to my room watching her sleep.

Eventually, he got kicked out of the dorm for puking off the balcony onto someone's head. I ended up with a quad to myself.

While he was a terrible roommate I didnt really think he was a bad guy (virulent racism aside). He hated the school and felt out of place. He was a jock but seemed to hate most of the other jocks, had a surprisingly deep knowledge of film - which he seemed to have a passion for but was embarrassed about (probably not cool in Southie), and he would sing along with The Smiths in the shower NOTE PERFECTLY.

Maybe he's still out there crooning "Do you have a vacancy - for a - back-scrubber?"

I've lived with some real dirtbags.

One house I was responsible for gathering money from everyone to pay rent, bills, etc... and my friend was ALWAYS short or late. After months I finally lost it and yelled, "What the fuck, you're an adult, how do you not have $70 after a week of me harping on you" to which he responded, "because I have a cocaine problem, what do you want from me???"

Same house, different dirtag who decided to live with his girlfriend and moved out and while I was at work. I sent him a text asking if everything went ok and if his room was cleaned out and he responded with, "Yep, got everything. I left something to toss out with the trash in the living room, hope you don't mind" and I came to this...

Once I got out of that house I decided to live alone moving forward.

The dryer is much more effective than newspaper. I don't see what's annoying about that.

One time I came home and my good friend comes out of his room frantic, shirtless, covered in baby oil, desperately asking me if I had any sleeping pills. I was pretty fucking confused but just said "nope!" and went to my room. I probably should have let it rest at that but I told some of our mutual friends about it because it was pretty fucking funny. Next time I see my roommate he awkwardly says something like "I just got a really bad sunburn and couldn't sleep and the school nurse said baby oil was really good for it." ...

Once moved into a party house with my girlfriend at the time. It was myself and five other girls including my gf. There was a black lesbian chick from DC that lived in a weird back room of the garage. She mostly kept to herself but she kept stealing money from another girl in the house and would just deny it. One day some other random chick shows up to our house with a moving truck on zero notice and just starts packing crap into our house. We confront our "roommate" and apparently the girls that lived there before told her she was free to move out whenever she wanted as long as she had someone to move in. In her head there was no need to inform us that she found some random lady we didn't know to move in. After confronting her about it she starts yelling and getting ghetto on us. She starts talking shit to my girlfriend, I step in since I'm supposed to be the man of the house, but she just keeps raising her voice with no intention to reason with us. Eventually I leads to me telling her "Fuck you," she replies "I'll show you how hoooood I can get!" and tries to punch me in the face. I dodge the first, she tries again and barely swipes my cheek but knocks the glasses off my face. It took a lot of self control not to clock that bitch back but that was the last time I ever saw her fortunately.

I used to have a gay roommate who was cool, but then he had two of his gay buddies move into another room of the house. One of them wasn't bad at all, just really quiet and basically his friends bitch, the other was a piece of shit. I ate a piece of his birthday cake in the fridge shortly after he moved in, so did everyone in the house, but for some reason he kept a grudge on me since he didn't know me that well. They would all start group text threads with their iPhones and for some reason include me in them like I was missing out on their hot roommate gossip if I wasn't involved. They'd text each other non-stop which meant my phone would constantly be blowing up with nothing pertaining to me. I'd politely ask them to leave me out of them but they'd keep doing it. Eventually I think I sent a sarcastic all caps hate text telling them to quit fucking texting me?the grudge continued. Next, these fuckers buy a puppy without asking anyone in the house if it were cool, (landlord was not ok with pets.) Instead of taking care of it and giving it the attention puppies need, they kept it locked up in their room where it would just cry, bark, piss and shit all day. When another roommate suggested they get rid of it via typical group text, fucker blows up on her telling us the dog was none of our business. I think at one point he was even ripping up house bills that came in the mail. Fuck that guy.

I could go on. I'm paying a lot more to live alone nowadays but it's so worth it.

I rented a room from a woman in her 40s when I first moved out to CA who had a shrine to her (former) self in the garage. Photos of her past modeling career framed on the wall with candles and potpourri and incense beneath it all. I'd met with this certifiably insane lady the day before I met this one while searching for apartments so by comparison, this woman seemed fairly even keel. She was unemployed the whole time I lived with her. She did have this pseudo boyfriend who she would insult viciously whenever we had company and she'd inevitably be shithoused. I think she called him the Gargoyle, but definitely called him ugly and stupid to his face while people were over. BUT, she would fuck him, and then the next day he'd have left money (not a lot) for her, and cleaned our apartment. She also had this habit of sipping tequila out of shot glasses and day drinking Cahuenga beer. I worked 9-5 so by the time I was home she was usually pretty drunk. Sometimes a bit too friendly, but usually it wasn't a big deal as I'd just go to my room and ignore her. When she was really drunk she'd want an audience so wouldn't take the hint that I was in my room, so she'd barge in and punish me with inane conversation that I've since blacked out. When I needed a break, I'd walk to the bar a few blocks from our house. On one fateful instance, I was sitting at the outside portion, which had an extra tall granite slab as the bar. I was having a beer and watching a hockey game when I heard her, blocks away, chattering to herself in messy pursuit of someone to talk to. Minutes later she was at the bar in a sundress, hammered of course, and berating me for leaving her alone. She then blamed me for her sandal breaking on the way over, lifted her leg onto the bar which revealed her hairy aborted babyhead of a vagina to me, the bartender, and anyone unfortunate enough to be looking our way. Shit looked like a shower drain jammed between two potato buns.

I moved out shortly after, but before doing so, one night we were each in our own rooms sleeping or attempting to when I started hearing this muffled screaming and grunting. It wasn't just sex grunts and the shit you'd hear by the nature of properties being stacked up on one another, this shit sounded violent and potentially non consensual. We both came out of our rooms at the same time and were like, dude, what the fuck? Wasn't her. Wasn't me, so we figured out it was our downstairs neighbor. We both went downstairs to knock on the door to see what was up and kind of check to make sure no one was getting raped or something. Mind you this is at like 1:30-2ish on a weekday. We knock on the door and no one answers for a minute. Then the grunting stops and a minute later, the door opens revealing a dude in a gimp mask, leather vest, and Bart Simpson pajama pants. I lose my shit and head upstairs. My roommate, taken aback, asked if things were okay down there. The dude in the mask was super apologetic and said that they'd keep it down and that he could have his partner come to the door if we wanted to make sure everything was... not rapey. She declined and came upstairs white as a sheet, which was quite a feat considering she was very dark skinned Italian.

was the only guy in a house full of girls.  one of them, a korean girl, was a complete slob - she had a little dog that she let piss and shit on pee pads in her room, which she would proceed to throw in the kitchen trash making the whole apartment smell.  having just one bathroom, the girls were always bashful about pooping in my presence, so i could sometimes tell they were waiting for me to leave.  why are people so weird about pooping?

I found kiddy porn on my ex roommates computer one time while he was at work. A whole hard drive dedicated to that shit. It made me sick to my stomach when I finally realized what it was. I ended bailing at the end of the month and haven't seen this dude for over a decade now. Everything about this dude's personality started to make sense after that whole episode. I've been on the solo tip ever since.

I've posted these same stories before in a thread about roommates a year or so back, but I figured id post them again anyways just for the hell of it. Not really too "awkward" or "awful", but still somewhat entertaining nonetheless.

Around Spring of 2011 I lived with my buddy Tim for a bit at his apartment. Tim was a friend of mine that I've known for a long time and who I'd been skating with since we were in high school. The dude was one of the messiest guys ever. He had two cats and never really cleaned after them, so his whole place had sort of a hint of cat piss smell to it. There was dirty clothes everywhere, weird stains on the carpet, wrappers and other assorted garbage all over the floor, half eaten pizzas and empty beer bottles just lying around on the ground all the time, and the bed I crashed on had old spilt clam chowder all over it. After getting over how initially gross it was, you kinda get used to living grimey. We had a routine which we kept for the longest time: Wake up, smoke a cigarette or two outside on the steps and just shoot the shit for an hour or so, hit the skate park and skate, come home and eat, play Mortal Kombat 3 til 3 or 4 in the morning with punk rock blasting in the background, then pass out and do it again.
He lived in a pretty shitty neighborhood too, and our downstairs neighbor (who was this big sketchy ass dude who I'm pretty sure was a drug dealer) threatened to kill me one time because I accidentally woke him up from a nap while I was walking up the steps. Good times.

Then, around late 2012/early 2013 I stayed with my buddy Lee for a bit. Lee was also a friend of mine that I knew from back in high school. It was pretty weird living there. He had a two room apartment which he shared with his sister who is a stripper, her boyfriend, their three kids, and her boyfriends mom. I usually crashed on the couch in the living room, along with the boyfriend's mom, who was probably the laziest woman I've ever met. She just slept all day and pretty much only got up off of the couch to use the restroom. Lee's sister would always bring over her stripper friends to party and hang out, so that was pretty cool. It's always pretty interesting to have scantily clad women around all the time, getting fucked up on booze and drugs all night, doing/saying stupid shit, it was pretty entertaining. Her and her boyfriend also knew some sketchy ass people that they would bring over all the time. They had a friend who had recently gotten out of prison after being locked up for 15 years for several armed robbery charges and drug possession charges. Whenever he was over he would tell me about how how he was in a prison gang, and that he would often be forced into fights even though he didn't want to fight, and how he had shanked close to fifty people while in prison. Why was this guy there all the time you ask? He was the guy that Lee's sister and her boyfriend had to watch their kids while they were out. An ex con watching kids; it was like something out of a sitcom. but it turns out he was a pretty cool dude. Those kids were always loud and rowdy, and he actually did a great job watching over them.
I rarely got to see Lee because he had such a hectic work schedule, but whenever I did see him he was always strung out on methadone (he's a former heroin addict who was just coming out of it at the time, so he was put on methadone) and he would just spend the whole night playing Batman: Arkham City. Every night it was the same for him, get home from work and play Arkham City til the wee hours. Me and him used to have the wildest adventures together, so it was kind of a bummer to see how much he has calmed down since then.
My daily routine there was usually: wake up, get food, job hunt all day, come home and kick it with everyone, then sit on the couch and watch Lee play Arkham City all night until I get tired and decide to go to sleep.
It was pretty shitty living, but I wouldn't trade that experience for the world. Had such weird and awesome times while I lived there.

I had this very beautiful and  charming female roommate once. She had this amazing house with cheap rent, so I went for it. For the first while it was great, but then she got these 2 persian cats and it kinda went downhill from there. There was hair everywhere, one would piss in the shower daily, their litter box would fill up, and I would go as long as I could not cleaning it out of principal, but I usually caved because the smell was so rancid.

I had some friends that dated her, and had heard that she could be kind of crazy (daddy issues, mom passed away, super smart scientist but to the point of fault) and I slowly found out she was. Manipulative, had all these guys sending her shit, trying to buy her love. She had plane tickets bought for her, a mac book, so much shit. I didn't get to see the full extent of it until she dated this Scandinavian. They would fight a lot and he would stay there for months on end while visiting. One night I wake up to all this screaming. My room was across from hers on the top floor. There was a landing and stairs heading the second level. I come out of my room and her boyfriend is screaming and crying at the top of the stairs. I look down to the landing and my roommate is laying there, no underwear, with her neck jammed into the corner of the wall, eyes open, not moving. He's yelling at me 'SHE JUMPED! SHE FUCKING JUMPED!' and I am groggy, drunk and freaked the fuck out. I go down to her and start talking to her and shes not responding, just starring forward, breathing all fucked up. I go back to her boyfriend and tell him we need to call an ambulance. I tell her '_____, we are going to call the ambulance now, ok?'. I finish my call, hang up, and a split second afterward, she gets up and tells me that I should call back and tell them that she's ok. She thens proceed to tell me, 'Oh don't worry, he didn't push me. It's fine.' which I never asked, or thought ever. I stayed up until like 6 in the morning, the guy was leaving and planning on going back to Copenhagen as soon as possible, the ambulance came and inspected her, and I went back to bed. Saw them together the next day and didn't get an apology or ever acknowledgement of the night before. Luckily I was already on my way out after she promised me a room change after our other roommate left and pulled it away from me, pulling rank, a day before I was moving my stuff in.

So I was living together with this couple. Everything went fine until he bcheated on her and she moved out.
The Apartement has 3 rooms, of which one is a living room.
Of course the two of us couldn't pay the rent alone, especially with the high rents in CPH.

We build a wall made of shelfs and split the living room in half. It looks pretty cosy with curtains and stuff.
The person who would live there would not have 100% privacy.
We had many people to chose between until my roommate (apartement on his name) got this "friend" in.

So the guy does seriously nothing. He has a rich dad who gives him a lot of money each month. He sleeps until midday,
smokes joints and doesn't clean up at all. In the evening he usually smokes even more weed until he passes out next to
his noisy electronic music.
He lies next to it and sleeps, while I am in my room and can't sleep (earplugs won't do it). At some point he grew himself some stuff
in the window. Everything was smelling and he had his bonghead-homies around all the time.
In the weekends he left friday evening and got back sunday around midday, then slept until monday evening.
This wasn't good for my studies at all.

I started going over every time I was annoyed(which was pretty much all the time). I told them to shut up and leave.
He stopped inviting people over, stopped listening to loud music and it seems like he stopped to smoke so much weed.
The guy still does nothing, literally! How can you live like that in your mid-twenties?!
The apertement looks like a mess, since I didn't clean their shit up. God bless I am moving out soon.

Edit:
I found out that his mother killed herself with pills 8 years ago. This explains a lot. But still, how can you live like that?
Wouldn't someone in this position want to keep themselves busy?

My last roommatee was a guy I met on craigslist when I moved to LA. He got 5150'd twice. One time I was there, and the entire apartment complex saw him get dragged out by police kicking and screaming. That was really awkward/awful. I don't do roommates anymore.

I'm not sure if this is the best or worst thing I could read, being that I'll probably have to find a roommate within a couple weeks.

I haven't had anything that bad, but I did have an idiot butt roommate that had entitlement and ego issues, and I couldn't stand him, enough to where I hated his eyes, his prominent orbicularis oris, and his dumb hair. He made me hate the products he used, the food he ate, and anything that I associated with him. I wish he never existed. I had no problem making fun of his inability to find a girl willing to spend time with him.

Oh yeah, the last roommate I had only lasted a 2 months... he WAS awesome, but he was so damn negative and depressing that it heavily affected my performance in my grad program, and I was never really happy. So I had to break up with him, and he moved back to Texas (from Oregon) the next day.

Man, I feel you.
My first roommate was like that. He was a friend and skatebuddy until we moved in together.
I threw him out. We still skate every now and then(not on purpose), but only when other people are around.
Haven't talked to him since.

Not my story, but its a funny one. I had a very good friend at university that desperately wanted to find a roomate to split the costs. After having all his friends taken he decided to be roomates with a weirdo that used  to hang out with us. The weirdo became friend with us after a while. People would ask us  if the weirdo was gay and it didnt cross our minds. Eventually one day, after one year of roomating, he told to my friend that he was gay and told him that he was tired of hiding that and that he was a virgin and stuff. My friend was kindna freaked out but then again he felt sorry for him. After a few days the gay guy begged him to let him suck his dick. My friend freaked out and told him that he is not gay. Then things became awkward and the gay guy was kind of depressed. My friend wanted to move away but he was broke and he didnt want to make the gay guy feel shit. Eventually the gay guy found a boyfriend and everything worked out. We used to joke and tell him that they have enema in the bathtub by unskrewing the shower thingy and shoving it in their ass. We told him that he should mark the shower thingy with a marker to see if it gets unskrewed. He was thinking it for months.

A couple of my friends were splitting a house together and one of their roommates bailed. They put out an ad on Craigslist and got this women in her fifties who looked kinda like Mama Fratelli.

Her sole source of income was supposedly "slip and fall" lawsuits but she never missed rent. I guess it worked out ok for them, she was relatively unobtrusive and stayed in her room most of the time. Still, it was always weird to be over there, drinking, partying and being loud and then have this older woman wordlessly pad by to get something from the kitchen.

I have a bunch of shit I could post both amazing/awkward and awful but I'll just give you one awful one from my early years before I decided I'd never live with room mates again ( other than a gf that is )

So, to preface this, my friend had to serve time for a really poor decision he made to impress a girl and I decided to be a good friend and pick him up and let him move in my apt with my roommates for a while as it was away from the town he was in and I knew he'd get into more shit there.  ( I did ok this with my roommates first )

So I had the largest room in the apt and created a shitty wall to separate the room into two.  ( I also had a gf who stayed over sometimes, to which he walked in on her riding me but that's another story haha )

Anyway, One day I come home and the main door to the room was shut and I was like fuck that, we separated that shit so it wasn't necessary to do that.  So I walk in ...

I walk in to a chick on her back with him fucking her and some dude ( who was supposedly gay ) getting head from her hanging off the end of the futon upside down head, while another chick was sitting in a chair watching it all happen ( for some reason I thought this was the weirdest part).  I hear, is that all you got mumbled from the girl as she takes a breath, notice they are fucking on my expensive sleeping bag and then turn around and walk out just thinking wtf did I just see!

Anyway, later on he and I run into each other and I was like wtf man, you took my sleeping bag!  To which he replied he'd wash it.  I made him buy me a new one instead, it sucks though, I loved that sleeping bag.

I went a long time without roommates post-college. Lived with a girlfriend for a year, but that's another story. When I came out to DC, I suddenly had to get used to the idea. The rent is crazy expensive, and while I was broke I couldn't justify draining what little money I had every month. So I had two roommates in succession that were particularly bad, both in the same place.

The first guy was a Mormon and had serious issues. He was at least partially developmentally disabled, and he grew up in a restrictive culture and bad household. It was like living with a giant child. He had good intentions but struggled in social situations: couldn't read cues but would keep going full steam ahead. He had a really weird relationship with his dog. I love animals, and at first it seemed like fun to have a golden retriever around the house. But he'd warped the dog to an incredible degree. It would have panic attacks when he got home from school and would just wind it up more and more. Then he'd have extended conversations with his dog in front of me. I saved two choice quotes:

Quote
You want me to touch your balls, huh? I won't do it.

and

Quote
I wish I was asexual like you. [Pause] You don't have to worry about relationships with women.

He was 35 and unmarried which is very unusual for Mormons. Most have paired off by age 22. He eventually started seeing a woman from Utah long distance. I've never met anyone who was more obviously a lesbian in my life. Her uniform was a camper hat, a yellow polo, plaid capris, and Tevas. They got married and he moved out of the house. I hear they have two kids already.

I'll write about his successor later.

I'll try and keep these short and sweet.

I lived with a guy who moved into town from Seattle. He moved to tulsa to get away from a troubled past and start fresh, he was enrolled in spartan school of aeronautics, seemed to have his shit together. He also killed it on a skateboard, and we clicked as homies pretty much instantly. Things were good for a few months until he just decided not to go to work one day. A few weeks later he's got pounds of weed coming in from Seattle in coffee cans, and now random fools are knocking on my door at all hours of the night for a gram. We had people break into our apartment a few times and steal his supply, games, movies. The worst part was when he started embracing the lifestyle. He'd go buy some pimped out car, his clothing choices and music, his persona, became some cheesy Mac Dre persona. He decided to move out one day. His pimped out car got pulled over in Utah and got confiscated along with about $25,000 cash. I do miss coming home to personal blunts though.

Eh, this isn't even the bad roommate. More later.

More later.

Sounds like a fun roommate to be honest. Hopefully none of your stuff was ever stolen by accident. The cheesy Mac Dre attire can't be helped, especially when he's "weed kingpin" of Tulsa.

He was a cool ass dude and I had some amazing times living with him. It just got sketchy after a while. Dudes knocking on the door at 3 am asking me for pills and shit. Eventually people started blowing up my phone if my roommate didn't answer.  It just wasn't what I signed up for, and truthfully I'm not a huge fan of the whole stoner thing. My friends would come over and bum weed every day, get high, and then sit in awkward silence all afternoon doing nothing. It's cool once in a while, but these fools were using us.

One of my last roommates stole a ferret from Pet smart, decided he hated it, and then started crashing at his girlfriends place when his room started reeking of ferret shit. As a result, I ended up having to feed the ferret and clean it's cage every day. Eventually I got attached to her, and that's precisely when he decided to show up and give the ferret away without telling me.  This is probably my worst roommate to date. We had a small one bedroom place, and I would sleep in the second little living room on a futon, which was connected to the main rooms and acted as a social room during the day. It was right on the river, awesome location, and it would have been a perfect place for two people. A few weeks after moving in, I take a trip to Boston, and when I return I find out he is letting 3 other dudes crash for a while. A while turned into half a year. I couldn't get out of there without having someone else sign onto the lease, and none of the freeloaders would. I'd come home to full blown parties where my shit would get fucked up. I came home from work one night and there's some dude fucking a girl in my bed. Worst living situation ever. And of course my friend was a slob. The kind of guy who cooks spaghettios (yes, really) in a pan, walks over to the couch and eats out of the pan, and then leaves it on the coffee table for weeks.

Man, I'm just bitching now.

Did you ever ask the stoner freeloaders if they were ever gonna buy a bag?

I lived with seven of my friends after high school in a party skate house. Our land lord was a crackhead who would pimp his wife out and forget we gave him rent money.

When you are living with that many people, alliances start to form to maintain order. My alliance was with my buddy who shared a bedroom with me. We would keep an eye out for each other's stuff and would leave each other alone with girls. One time I woke up from a stupor to a chick riding his face pretty hard. I tried to fall back asleep, yeah right. Anyway she dips and I was like "nice dude" and he turns on the light and has hot wings all over his face like a messy clown. We laughed and smoked bubblers for awhile after.

We had a dude named Cyrus live on our couch and slang E all day. He honestly slept 18 hours a day on this shitty couch. Everytime chicks came through he would take his shirt off and try to sell them E.

One by one people started moving out.. And our land lord became more and more cracked out. These 2 pimps moved in to his house and would tag team his wife in the bedroom directly across from my friends room. Still can't un see that. Landlord never paid the water bill so the health dept tried to evict us. We ended up destroying the interior of the house.

Ahhhh good times.

Raw! I don't have stories that scandalous. Lived vicariously through a couple dirt houses occupied by friends but nothing on that level.

The successor to the Mormon was what finally got me out of the house. I was studying for a professional certification exam and had no time to pick applicants, so I was stuck. He was a computer programmer and part robot. I probably said 100 words to him in the month we lived together. He'd work on computers all day, come home, and sit in his room on his computer. His food was the worst part. He microwaved tuna fish from the can, and I didn't think there could be anything worse. Then he unveiled his signature dish. Once a week, he'd put frozen chicken breasts, egg whites from a carton, and water into a crock pot, leaving it on over night. The result was this gray and white mash...one of the most awful things I've ever smelled. He'd split it into several portions, cover it with Sweet Baby Ray's bbq sauce, and those were his lunches for the week.

Things have been great since then, thankfully.

this is very tame because i am young and have only lived in a few places:

where i am now, the lock on the door to our shared bathroom is pretty terrible to use, so i always leave the door unlocked.

i was taking a shit one day a couple months ago and my roommate opens the door, thinking im not in there.
no big deal, he says sorry, shuts the door, i go on shitting.

that night around 2ish im shitting again.
my roommate has a chick over. they are playing music loud (probably banging or whatever), so she doesnt hear me walk to the bathroom.
all of the sudden i hear her run out of his room super quickly to the bathroom. she opens the door, looks me in the eye, looks down towards where my dong is dangling above the water, then looks me in the eyes again. after a couple more seconds of this, she literally runs back to my roommate's room.

all of this without saying a word. very strange.

Directly post college I lived with two dudes who were seriously womanizing sociopaths.  It was actually fun to watch, but I was in a relationship with my (now) wife at the time.  One dude was a legit male model and the other was a 6'3" ripped up ex college swimmer.  Basically a good situation if you are early 20's looking to hook up.  They would just go to college bars 4-5 nights a week and bring girls home.

One day I was at work and they didn't realize my girlfriend/(now) wife was sleeping in my bed.  All the bedrooms were upstairs.  She told me they just had a loud conversation for like 20 minutes about "bitches", "anal", giving facials, etc.  in the hall outside my room.  She just walked out and it got awkward.

Pretty funny in hindsight.

One of my roommates had an epic hook up system.  He was what women would refer to as handsome, but had no money at all.  We lived a 10 minute walk from a very popular going out/bar neighborhood.  Last call is 2:00am.  He would sit at home, smoke and drink cheap beer until about 1:15, then just walk over and holler at girls coming out of the bars, acting as if he had been in there all night.  It worked an amazing amount of the time.  His goal was to leave the house and return with said bar girl within one hour.

In high school I lived with a guy who was on his last year while I was on my second. (I don't know how american high school system works, but we spend three years.)

Now well, both of us used to live in a dormitory before we got our apartment. For a party at the school, my room mate invited a guy called Stefan who had finished high school the year before, to come and stay a our place for the weekend. Stefan brought his queers fuckaroundbuddy, both with solid marked cheek bones and lots of powder and foundation in their faces. I weren't really that much around for that weekend, so them staying there was alright with me, but little did I know that my room mate allowed them to sleep and fuck in my bed. He didn't wash my bed sheets and he didn't tell me until half a year later.. douche, douche, douche..

I still love him though.

Was desperate for a room at school one year so I answered a Craig's List ad . . .

It turned out to be 50 + y/o homosexual man, his partner of the same age with a serious neurological impairment, a PTSD ridden 30 something y/o guy who had served in the US Army during the Bosnian civil wars, & a myriad of homeless/transient people.

Needless to say I took that room in a moment!

The landlord & his partner would drink a fucking handle of Seagrams 7 & fight all night, screaming about infidelities & such.

The PTSD dude would stay in his room all day, take gravity bongs out of the garbage can & ask me to download conspiracy laden rap music.

Went to Texas for Spring Break that year, returned home to my landlord pestering me about the possibility of gay altercations I may have had with my van mates over those couple of weeks . . .

Needless to say I was not too psyched on him hitting on me so I kind of distanced myself from them . . .

Missed rent by one day, he got drunk & tried to evict me & then quickly changed his mind; but the damage had already been done . . .

The PTSD guy ended up stealing a good amount of 19th century ornate silver serving dishes from the landlord & selling them for scrap . . .

Ironically, a kid I knew answered the same ad about a year later & told me how Peter would watch gay porn really loud at night & still get fucking rip roarin' drunk!

this is pretty vanilla compared to the other stories, but my last roomate though it is perfectly normal to wash dishes once a week (not a big kitchen and limited kitchenware) and would cook in big batches - i.e. leave the cooked chicken at room temperature for a whole week etc. He made the decision to move in my own apt so much easier

College - Roomed with 2 Koreans who would microwave raw pork. That was the worst smell ever.

I had to dorm with the college basketball team's point guard. Ghetto beyond belief. He ended up harboring his cousin from Syracuse on our couch for six months who turned out to be on the run from a shooting homicide. Dude was alright, but he had no money and stole everything he could get his hands on. I had to get outta there.

Those weren't too bad. For four years I rented a out a five bedroom house on 18 acres and the rent remained 1k/month regardless of how many people were living there. One of the original roommates had a terrier puppy who he'd leave locked in his room all day. The guy never had time to train or socialize the dog ... and half the time didn't have money to buy her dry food. His room was carpeted and she ended up eating a solid quarter of the carpet because she was trapped in there all day and starving.

The dude would pick other roommate's locks and then destroy their food stash. He'd get drunk and call our landlord's wife and say shit like 'you're so fucking hot can I come over?' and 'I'm taking a piss right now ...I just realized my dick is Huge!'. This same guy ended up harboring these two chicks who were on the run for a series of house burglaries. Straight skanks and he'd come home get drunk and then leave his bedroom door open while he fucked both of them for hours. Kinda boss, but extremely disrespectful and obnoxiously unnecessary.

A few months later a guy came to live there who had just gotten out of a 6 month sleep-away heroin rehab. I was super skeptical but it was the winter, we were desperate, he had a job lined up and everyone else convinced me six months was a long enough time to get clean for good. Things were fine for awhile. Then, he started to call out of work and spend days at a time in his room. He'd come out to microwave something, piss, then go right back in. I realized the guy was never shitting (constipation is a side affect of dope) and it didn't take long for his new girlfriend to get curious as well. She ended up searching his room and opened up an eyeglass case to find 30+ needles stashed in there. He got confronted, and friends and roommates decided to pull some back-woods intervention shit on him.
When he caught wind of that, he waited until I was the only one in the house besides him, and confronted me blitzed out of his mind with a song-journal...he started trying to sing a suicide note/ song to me that he had written years before. It was pretty shocking. He stumbled out of my room and came back with a prescription bottle full of pills and downed them in front of my face then sat down in a chair and started crying.

So I had to call 911 and report an overdose in my home. While he was in the hospital, we cleaned his room out, found dozens of dirty dishes, mold everywhere, and towards the end we accumulated close to 60 needles. He's alive and apparently doing well for himself now. But that was the fucking worst. And on top of it all, I was selling bud for a living and he was very well-aware that doing what he did would bring cops to the house for a subsequent search and interviews. I was able to get everything out of there before that happened, luckily.

Moral of the story - live on your own or with your girl!

I live in a house with a few other people now and we got this chick in to rent spare room. 100% got weird vibes off her but you never know about people honestly I just assumed she was out of a relationship and on her arse or something, it happens

Sorta fell through the cracks I think nobody was keen on her moving here but we didn’t really discuss it and then she moved in

Anyway she lasted maybe six hours hahaha, late last night she’s got the tv cranked and Jimmy the chippie that lives downstairs has come up and asked her to turn it down, I didn’t catch all that was said but what I did see was her losing her fucking shit at him like proper screaming it was like when they wet those things that turn into gremlins

I forget cause I was drinking but she said something like fuck you I’m just trying to watch my rod Stewart so I kinda involved myself and said nah that’s bullshit I get up mad early most days too, just get some headphones or turn it down a bit please

Dunno bout you people but rod Stewart interviews and even a whole documentary about his concert, you gotta shut that sort of stuff down immediately hey, nip it in the bud sort of thing

I think it was on a tape or a dvd and I knew there and then I was gonna focus that tape the second I had the opportunity

Anyway she fucks off into her room and around 2am I am sitting up playing tien len with some other housemates and she comes out of her room with something in her hand, I didn’t really see but I thought it might have been a glassy anyway she goes into the bog and doesn’t shut the door I can see a lighter going. I just call out hey you’re not smoking ice in there, are you?

Anyway she yells out nah I’m smoking ‘hack’ and tells me to get fucked - we’re looking at each other all man what’s ‘hack’ nobody knew

And she comes out and she’s got just the hose and conepiece out of a bong and she’s clearly smoking resin through it. Like the black stuff that accumulates in a bong, yeah?

She’s just got the other end of the hose in her mouth and smoking just like that.  Reminded me of a fucked up cartoon person or something hey. I never saw someone do that before

Man it was fucking disgusting I mean we were all up smoking too, but not like that man, not like that
She’s gone now

Fark that's heavy. Maybe tell her to get an electric grinder. Always plenty of resin crystals to scrape from there if you're out of bud.

In saying that, I've definitely smoked what I now know to be called 'hack' before, but not straight from the bong stem

Oh my, this is quite the thread. Got a few stories, nothing that can't be laughed at though...

-I was in my early 20's and living with 2 friends. One had a job shellfishing and the other was unemployed (still is) well the unemployed one would sleep all day, wake up around 4 and go from there. Had a terrible habit of drinking a ton, and cooking what I would say, were elaborate meals (chicken cacciatore was a fav) given the level of inebriation and how late this would be (10-11pm). I'd find tomato sauce on the ceiling from him tossing this stuff in the pan. What also added to this, was the kitchen and living room were really one big room, with carpet up to the linoleum. As you could expect, he would rarely do dishes and rarely finish these meals, leaving what was unfinished out. I'm like a strange house cat, eat mostly dry food, don't really cook, eat at work for the majority, so this didn't bother me as much as it should have at the time. Well one day, I was up at 4:30, getting ready to ride to work with a bong rip, and I hear something moving from the stove area. I go to check it out, and whatever he had made, had turned to a pyrex baking tray full of maggots. I think I sent a text when I went to work.

-Was living in PDX, in an apartment I found through my gf at the time, as she was in school out there and I threw caution to the wind and moved out there. The roommates were 2 students at Reed College and they were bright dudes in lotsa ways, but not so much in others. I was a bit older than these dudes, working and going to community college for whatever while they helped run a nuclear reactor or something. Moving on, the school they attended had/has some long time drug culture, "honor code" policy so you can go pretty wild, if you don't blow yourself up or whatever. One of the roommates was ordering coke off the dark web, shipping it to the apartment under a misspelled name of the other roommate and then doing it when he wasn't working on complicated problem sets. At the end of the year, Reed always put on some sort of "ball" always with a different theme. This year was "trap ball" so they decided to turn their dark web coke into crack, they just had to use the one pan I would cook with. These dudes probably all work at google now, or are burnt out.

I currently live in a "Hey Arnold" sorta boarding house of sorts and its great...

My roommates when I first moved to California were a group of girls that were really into making an event out of the little things, which is totally not me. Once, they took it too far when we saw a feral looking cat cross the street in front of us. Girl #1 stops the car and demand we do something to rescue it, which was fine but a bit of an inconvenience. Girl #2 and #3 agree.

The rescue plan they ended up devising, however, was that the cat was now ours. I was the odd man out, the other three voted to keep it. Didn't even bother to try to find out if it belonged to someone.

Now, I like cats... but there was a reason this cat was without an owner. It was hyper aggressive and would nip/claw at your ankles as you went by, but in their eyes it could do no wrong. That was, however, until the day it got fleas. It is expensive to fight a flea infestation for a cat your landlord doesn't know you have, and we were living on Americorps volunteer budgets, so the war raged on for two months. When we thought we had finally gotten rid of them after home remedies and over the counter bug bombs, they'd come back with a vengeance.

Now, it's June and our volunteer service year was up, so these girls all moved back to Vermont or wherever the fuck. I had planned on staying out there, so I was basically left in charge of the move out effort. That was fucked enough, being left to deal with furniture and cleaning, but also to finish the fight with the fleas that remained on top of it. I finally went in there the day of move out armed with as many bug bombs as my little stipend could buy, hucked em in each room, and called it good.

Somehow got my deposit back...

This was maybe 2016.

My GF and I needed to move out of our apartment. We were living in an apartment that was in her mom's name. Her mom was a methhead who constantly held it over us and would threaten to move in and kick us out so we were desperate. My best friend and his fiance said we could move in with them. So us 4 get a pretty decent loft. At the time my job didn't pay me shit so I paid just the electric bill.

My girl and my friends fiance (we'll call her Bitch) were pretty good friends and were coworkers. Bitch always made sure to remind us that the apartment was in her and my friends name and we just lived there. After like two months my friend goes on a business trip, and Bitch invites people over she's never met to buy weed. My girlfriend and I stay in our room because we had agreed that there'd be no selling weed in the place so we were mad.

My friend gets back after a week and Bitch tells him we stole her portion of the rent money because it went missing. We explain we def didn't and why would we steal the rent money for a place we live at. She claims my gf did because of a work argument. We suggest maybe it's the new people she met but of course not them. My friend then kicks us out.

My friend and I don't talk for a couple years, then in 2019 he says they're getting a divorce. Come to find out his wife had been taking her rent money and spending it then asking her rich family for the money and saying he was bad with finances. He apologized to me about it but I bring it up in a joking way every now and then

I moved in with a guy when I was 21. First real shared experience, lived with a girlfriend the prior few years and parents before that.
I barely knew him except running into him skating and at the bar. Seemed legit and everyone seemed to like him. Plus a cheap apartment in a cool neighborhood.
I gave him cash a few days before moving in. When I moved my shit in he was like “there’s a problem with the rent”
“Yeah? What’s that?”
“I spent it all on crack last night”
“That’s on you, homie”
He ended up sorting it out and paid rent and I lived there for a year. I was sober except cigs when I lived there and worked at 5am
Too many wild stories to tell, but this one stands out.
I came home at like 8pm and I could hear the static from the television full blast in the courtyard. I come in he’s passed out on the couch, burnt foilies on the the coffee table, porn popped out of the vcr(meaning he had that shit playing at an audible from outside volume) and the apartment was filled with smoke from the burning bagel bites in the oven.
I run in, turn off the oven and throw the charred bagels in the sink then turn off the tv. I wake him up like “DA FUQ?!”
He gets all aggressive and starts lecturing me on how I need to clean more and how if we kept things “tip top” we’d have a “pimp palace”. All while tossing around HIS mess and saying I need to tighten up. He eventually calmed down and nodded out again.

My new housemate has taken to playing guitar and singing in our house with paper thin walls while I'm trying to work from home.
My other housemate keeps turning the heat off to save oil when the house is freezing cold.
My other housemate keeps dropping shit on my ceiling and waking me up.
My neighbours have 3 small children that scream on the other side of my paper thin walls. The housemates didn't tell me about this before I moved in.

I also live in one of the most expensive cities to rent in the entire world and in a country that's experiencing a housing crisis that the government isn't taking seriously.

I'm going to snap.

My sophomore year roommate was a notorious alcoholic/coke head around campus and would just tweak the fuck out sometimes. A few times that year he would just be passed out on his bed with his dick out lol.

I'm extremely sympathetic. I've got undergrads below who go to bed late and a fitness freak above who gets up and runs around from 5 AM... then the major construction works carry on throughout the day while I'm working from home. Some noise cancelling headphones have stopped me from going postal and I endorse them if you can afford some.

My most unusual experience is from when I lived in a house share in Oxford where the landlords lived on the ground floor- they regularly looked after their grandchildren, which seemed nice . One day I discover that my car bonnet has been badly scratched. It looked like a child's drawing, but you know, scratched into my car bonnet. The driveway was walled off and gated, so I asked my landlords what had happened. They said that they'd seen some unknown kids do it, while they were playing in their garden but they hadn't thought to stop them. After a heated argument, I moved out.

Do stories about me being an awful roommate count?

I can sort of relate to the other side because I also play the guitar and sing in my apartment, but I'm also super conscious about if neighbors are in the building and the time of the day when I do it, still I'm always a bit paranoid that that's not enough. In a way it's similar to when you're skating a spot that's super close to offices or houses and since no one is saying anything, part of you keeps hoping they can't hear you when they probably can and just internalize which usually turns into more animosity once the occasion to speak minds arises. But in real life things never have to reach that point, since right now you're stuck living with those dudes maybe there could be a way to amicably talk those simple things out before they take insane proportions? In situations like this I always feel like the person not communicating about their trouble is at least equally to blame, to be honest. I know some people will take anything straightforward as a provocation or confrontation, but then that's really them projecting their own issues which is not on you to work out; maybe you've been there with those guys in particular before. There are times when reasoning people is just impossible because they are the only ones making it so, and so it's frustrating how you can't do shit, but that shouldn't become the default assumption before you've even tried with them I don't think.

Thanks pal. I know exactly what you mean. Working from home has its own challenges, but it has happened to me where I've stayed late in work on a Friday and realized I just don't want to go "home". It can weigh really heavy sometimes.

That sounds tough, too. Growing up in suburbs and always wanting to live in the city, I never thought that noise would affect me this badly. Funny you should mention it, but yesterday after posting I immediately went and bought ear plugs. I'm well used to sleeping with them in at this stage.

I get what you mean, and I agree. If I don't vocalize that I have an issue then I can't really fault them for continuing whatever behavior that's getting to me.

The issue here is that I'm wondering if it's my place to tell them off for certain things. Like my one housemate obviously doesn't mean to drop things on the floor, she's not doing it on purpose, it's an accident. The housemate with the guitar and the singing is only in the house less than a week so I might have to say to her, "Listen, you're well within your rights to play music in your room, but maybe you haven't noticed that the walls are particularly thin, please try and choose what time you play a bit more considerately." The kids next door are something else entirely. I can hardly go next door and tell them to tell the kids to shut the fuck up. Kids are going to scream, there's not much that can be done about it, which makes that feel a bit stressful.

Anyway, I've got earplugs and I've taken to playing white noise videos on youtube, but I don't think I'll be here in a year's time.

^ Earplugs can kind of work, when I lived in Bordeaux my flat was right above one of the busiest night party streets and it also had paper thin walls so getting any kind of sleep before 4 am was next to impossible without them, but I'm not even sure if sleeping with them is exactly healthy or recommended, I'm not too sure my ears were liking it although my sanity was. For the housemate dropping stuff I would probably plant a seed by joking about buying her a thick carpet or something, and see how that goes. Situation with the guitar person should be easily to work out, you guys could just agree on certain hours (personally, spontaneously I never play outside in between 11 am to 10 pm on week days and my neighbors seem to be putting up just fine), in fact the person is probably subconsciously waiting for someone else in the house to direct them on that so might as well break the ice. For the kids I agree there is nothing you can do, just like there was nothing I could do in my flat when for a while, one particular homeless guy had chosen to make it his thing to gather every garbage can in the neighborhood in the dead middle of random nights to improvise a drum set and start jamming out loud for hours complete with singing, and I'm talking several nights a week anytime in between 2 and 6. The random element to it made my nights absolutely traumatizing for a while, everytime I'd be going to sleep I was never sure whether I'd be able to or if the guy would suddenly start jamming out of nowhere. People were regularly calling the cops on him but they rarely showed up and whenever they would, the guy didn't have any documents on him and so they would quickly just give up. I almost really lost it on him once on a night my mother was staying over recovering from chemotherapy because any dialog was impossible to the point of really feeling like snapping, but violence on the poor guy would have been pointless as all fuck (and is generally something I never condone; plus I'm a skater, art being a possible nuisance, I get it), in the end I just accepted it as part of the nightlife in that city and rapidly moved anyway. On the other hand, you probably have ways to talk to these people and solve the two thirds of your problem, which may be better than nothing. Hang in tight!

I moved back to the east coast and was looking for a place in one of the city neighborhoods that wasn't too far from my job. I ended up getting a nice room in a house with a yard for a steal. $550/month. I was looking cleaner and more professional than usual because I was working in a high school and feeling stoked on not being a dirtbag for once, so moving into this house of "young professionals" didn't seem so bad. Social worker, designer, tech guy, and me (teacher). Figured tech guy might be cool because he at least played in a ska-pop-punk band, but he never once played at home in the year I lived there. he instead did shit like put my cast iron pan in the dishwasher, eat adderrol and play video games all the time. Not the worst dude, but not particularly cool either. The Social Worker was a decent roommate, kinda stressed out all the time but easy to deal with. The designer wasn't around much but when she was, she was drunk (I usually was too) but her man was the problem. He was from Spain and his name was Juan. He would get drunk and say some pretty nasty shit to her, which her and the social worker would excuse by saying "oh, it's because he is from Spain. Machismo..." I bit my tongue for a while until the night some anarchists affiliated with BLM blocked the highway in and out of Boston on a cold as fuck day. This dude was in the house and the 3 roommates were watching the news, drinking, and this dude starts saying stuff like "blocking highway for dead n*****s, causing problems..." repeatedly using the N word. Mind you, the social workers BF is also a black dude, and no one is saying anything to this menace, they're just sitting there. He says it again and I said "get the fuck out of my house with that shit. seriously, get the fuck out." He starts going off on me. his GF, the designer, is trying to get him to chill out and he says "shut the fuck up you dumb fucking slut. shut up." (I can hear his say it to this day, the way the s rolled off his tongue). I went into my room, put my bike away, and walked to the bar to avoid a fight. After that incident, the dude wasn't around much but his gf and my other female roommate tried to tell me it was all good, that he was drunk that night, etc and I told them I didn't want him around and because I was on the lease, he wasn't, and was an abusive, aggressive person, he could fuck right off. Well, he didn't come around for about a month but then one night designer, boyfriend, and two friends came in from some club at like 2 am. I'm leaving for an 18 day trip with a student to Salamanca  at 6am the next morning, so I'm trying to catch some zzz's. The whole house knew I was leaving but these fools brought the party home to the living room. I'm laying in bed, fuming when homeboy bangs on my bedroom door and says "AYYYYYYE! MAN! Have fun in Spain. blah blah blah blah" before passing out in the GF's room. I'm heated but trying to rest, so I don't purse anything but the 2 girls that came home with them, who I don't know, are taking shots of vodka in the living room, listening to music and watching TV. I go out there and ask them to chill out, but of course since they're wasted, it has no effect. 30 minutes later, they're ordering a pizza and I just can't handle it anymore. I walk out of the room, bare ass, and start yelling "no fucking way. you don't fucking live here. I don't know you. Your friend is sleeping, go sleep in her room or get the fuck out." they're saying shit like "she invited us. we have a right to be here." I'm standing there, cold as fuck, naked as a jay bird and start yelling. Social Work roommate comes out and offers to call them a cab/uber but they refuse and end up walking out to whatever bridge they lived under. I ended up being kind of blacklisted with the rest of the roommates after that but the Designer ended up moving out about a month later. It was a pretty awful situation.

In college I was in a forced triple dorm room the first semester, my one roomate was pretty rad but the other was a frat boy from Mass.  He was nice but a total slob, he would fill under his bed (which was the lower bunk under me) with trash until it was completely packed in.  He had some health issue where he would fart himself awake all night, smoke weed out of a lightbulb because he thought it was a way to make a vape, and would cut his toenails only when his shoes didn't fit and then not clean up.  He was nice but almost got into a fight over breaking his friends bong in our room which is when I had to dip out.  He got accused of stabbing a girl with a needle at a party that semester so moving out was a pretty awesome way to not be associated with that shit.

I don't have anything too particularly awful with the roommates I've had, but my college dorm mate was awkward to say the least. When we first met I was nice to him and it seemed like all was well, but after a few days he just stopped acknowledging my existence. I'd come in and say hi, but he wouldn't even look at me. He also never left the dorm unless he absolutely had to. I was a clean and quiet roommate, so I imagine that he just had some social anxiety, or something along those lines. It was just weird literally sleeping 5 feet away from someone for an entire year, but pretending like the other person didn't exist. It was awkward as hell, but I'd rather have a silent dorm mate that ignores me rather than some frat bro.

I've also had a college housemate who refused to talk to me. Soooo bizarre. Like, "Mate, I don't want to be your best friend or anything but we live together." But like your fella, I reckon my guy just had some kind of social issue. I took it personally at the time but now I know better.

Also in that house, all the other housemates had a big night out, and didn't invite me, hahaha. I went to the kitchen/sitting room one time to make food and they were all dolled up pre-drinking for a night on the town. Suuuuper awkward in hindsight.

My roommates have all been pretty chill and when I was younger I was the shitty roommate. My buddy has had the worst luck with roomates ever though. First was a openly suicidal trans girl. There other roommate ended up hooking up with and they had a relashionship but he never could openly admit it said they just were playing video games or whatever. Apparently he grew up very religous and couldnt accept that he was into trans people be open about it  or whatever. They had fights that got worse and worse until he ended up punching her in the face and cops came and theres drugs in the house and the whole nine fucking yards. Dude goes on the run dissapears the whole deal. Trans girl is now even more openly suicidal and acting crazy. Eventually they convinced her parents to pick her up and get her some help. Sad. Now he has a couple with three dogs that completly ruined there backyard with digging. They dont clean anything and stole a bowl of weed. They actually are in the same duplex as there
landlord so he knows all this shit goes on.
