One of my all time favorites. Just got his most recent Anti-Hero deck (Keep Iraq Beautiful!) and it got me wondering.....has there been any recent footage of him? I haven't seen Tent City yet, so I don't know if he is in that. But what's he been up to other than writing all over photos for Anti-Hero ads.

i hadn't put that together, but you are spot on. i just watched the gnar gnar part again, and they have very similar styles and tricks. i think it's an even more apt comparison than that of olson and fowler.
being ancient, i prefer julien, but still it is rad to see a kid skate like that.

he has the best nollie flip i've ever seen, and the only one i'd ever use the word gnarly to describe. it's kind of like how ave makes tech ledge skating look like he's skating a backyard pool.

He has the most beautiful railslide to fakie out in the middle of a ledge. Changed my mind about railslides on ledges. He needs a photo section devoted just to him. Starting with that photo at china banks with scabby ankles.

both of his lines at blackrock are perfect. 1. boardslide to fakie, backtail to fakie. 2. backlip, fs 180 nosegrind revert. the backlip is hands down the smoothest ledge trick i've ever seen.

that backside 180 over the street gap, it's like he just pops a little ollie and turns his shoulders. arms never above his shoulders. he's too fucking good.

anti hero is my favorite company and generally stranger boards have my favorite shapes and sizes so its always a no brainer on what board to buy unless there is a similar cardiel. vans should have him full on for sure too. i'm not going to lie either, i started wearing green shirts and brown pants after watching anti hero videos when i first really started getting into skating a few year ago. hell i even started rising extremely loose trucks too when i first really started getting into skating because stranger did

His part in sickboys is a classic. I saw it a year after it was made and it was top notch for a while. Kids will never know cause he didn't care to go out and film everything. You guys missed out on a great but I'm sure he doesn't care. Real heads know.

something that alot of younger dudes dont understand is that there are some people who dont need to put out footage all the time and still be pro. kenny hughes has only one full length part, but if you see him skate in person youll know why he's pro. same with julien stranger. some dudes just got it, but maybe dont care to film it all.

Saw him early 90's skating black rock with tommy g. filming during lunch hour rush, dude was just carving around everyone, would hit the ledge then pop out and carve around a random buisness person. I was bumping in too people just watching him...tommy was filming so that footy is out there somewhere....
He's earned the right to skate how and when he likes for a living and not have to worry about having a filmer. Who wouldn't want that...

I use to see him at the Almeda skatepark with his girlfriend on early am sessions (I am talking 9 am type stuff). thigh high switch flips over the one hip there and just all around cruising and ripping style. He was always stand offish but not in a dick head way, he would say hi and that was about it.
He is and always shall be one of my favorite skateboarders, hating him is just plan dumb, show me one bit of bad footage, it doesn't exist and many pros could learn a lesson from that.
Anti Hero changed skateboarding in a lot of ways, along with the east coast explosion in the mid 90's it made skateboarding made to me again the same way it did in the mid 80's, it made me not ashamed to be a skater like I was because of the early 90's.

Mr. Stranger might not be mr. popular, but he ruled. Example, thrasher cover from the early 90's with him backside disaster sliding the ledge coming out of the lowest story of the bus terminal in downtown SF. Burley, he had to clear 3 or 4 steps off the end of the ledge if I recall correctly.

He's active with his company and always touring and always skating. He's still one of the harderst working skaters who doesn't have media exposure.
And, yes, the kids don't care. He's more popular with older skaters who still seem to buy his board, thus justifying the existence of a signature deck (if legacy wasn't enough).

I remember looking at that ledge after that mag came out, fucking nutbar, I'm pretty sure there are a couple of steps out of the pic that he had to clear, maybe someone from SF can confirm.

nah, it was just after the big quake hit sf, the road had a huge crack in it and it was pushed up either side. looked like the police had put barriers up or something and he had just popped a huge olie over it...considering the era (mid/late 80s) a huge pop like that was something else. actually, i might have it somewhere around, i'll see if i can get hold of it. i think it was stranger, it seems right, sf, late 80s, gnar street skating...

i believe it's a frontblunt slide to fakie backside 5.0. kind of the opposite of what dill does at the end of skatemore: backside 5.0 to backside bluntslide.

They are Simples, they have the wavey gum sole, the rubber toe cap is bigger than the one on the Agahs and also this add is from the Jan 1994 issue so the photo is from summer 1993 or thereabouts whereas the Agahs came out like a year later.

i remember something whitley wrote once about how at one stage he wanted to be like julien: skate smooth and stylish, and rock cutoff ben's and simples with no socks. pretty sure that's what's going on in that shot.

lot of good stuff in that video. the brotha lynch mob to cards falling so hard a few times in a row trying that huge frontside air is just sick. i had to go to the dr. to get my shoulder looked at today because i took a digger after skidding on a rock skating home from the grocery store last week. i thought i might have broken my collarbone. all i could think about all weekend was cards hitting that pool bottom on his shoulder and getting up to try again. i felt like a pussy.

One of my favorites. I remember when I was a little shit I would skate this ramp in the heart of the Mission on 23rd and Bartlett and he would be ripping it with Mic-e and Wheat Berry. First guy I knew to fs boardslide a handrail and have as a photo too. SF legend for sure.

Probably the coolest thing that has ever happened to me was meeting and getting to skate with Julien. It was 2001 or 2002, Anti-Hero tour stopped in my hometown. The local shop owner was friends with one of the tag-along guys on the tour, so they came in to skate the mini. We headed to the skatepark after a bit and Julien, who had been sleeping in the van the whole time, comes out of nowhere and gets into a "who can do the biggest frontside flip" with TNT. Fucking epic.

Then a few days later the Oregon Trifecta hit the same park, what I saw Julian do on that lazy morning was as good as anything during that contest, except that he stuck to the deep end only.
One of the best backside airs of all time.

YAY! I just read this whole thread, took an hour at least. Fuckin A stoked that all of you put this together. Let's hope Julien doesn't find out about it, lol. He would be bummed or something.
On the real though, I have known Julien since he was like 13 and he still comes by every week. They just don't make them like him anymore. To skate with him is to know how weak your shit truly is. Him and Tuma aka Eric Britton are the youngest of the real Dogtown guys. The shit Jules has laid down over the years is untouchable. One of my clearest memories in skating is bombing hills at night with the crew and he and I took a wrong turn down Clipper Street and when we looked at each other he just nodded like we were going to beat all the other guys with this shortcut, a minute later I was sliding out to avoid certain death, a split second after I went down he too had to bail out. It was rad, I was stoked but beat. I crawled home, he stayed out there and linked back up with the posse for more!

man... just got through reading this thread. I remember the SMA of the late 80's. Natas, Thiebaud, Reyes and then Stranger was am, then Alan Peterson. I was too young to know the significance of the syringe board. I thought it was just a play on the doctors office shit... vaccines, allergy shots etc. Not heroin or other harsh injection drugs.

Those Speed Wheels videos were amazing. Lots of crap filler in there but there were lots of tidbits that were nice. Love the way Julien carves around. Super loose truck style. Nobody makes it look better. Super casual.

Believe it or not but Thomas Morgan was an amazing skater. I skated with him on several occasions back in the day. First time I met him, I didn't even know he skated street. I thought he was a vert dog. Then he proceeded to bs flip the water gap at Bay & Wellesley in Toronto. Definitely an underrated dude.

Holy fuck!! I'm from Hailey but hadn't been skating for long when they were here for that and didn't really see much of that. Hewitt's skating there is insane. I would like to know the reason why Sheffey named his kid after Julien, don't get me wrong, I would too if I ever wanted to deal with a shit head-snot nosed-piss head kid. But where is/was the connection between the two? I don't think they ever rode for the same companies? Forgive me, I was born in 1990 and started skating in '01-'02.
