2 JL Audio 12w3's in a B Box ported enclosure with a Kicker CX600 amp for $100 from a pawn shop. Sales dude was a little bummed, cause he had his eye on em for payday. Retail would have been around 800. Used probably 400. Not the hardest hitters in the world, but they sounded and pounded great. Lasted about 4 years of daily abuse during my commute before one finally blew. Upgraded subs and amps, but still have the CX and the other JL. Probably gonna throw it in my daughter's car.
I bought 2 15 kicker comp c's, custom box and amp for $100. I used them almost daily for a year or two before trading them in on a sundown. They gave me $200 for it so I felt pretty good about it.
Damn good deal, son.
But yeah, Sundown all day baby. Thought about tryin to run a U18, but decided I didn't want to forfeit my back seats AND my entire trunk with a box big enough for it ( since it's already stuffed to the gills, between the SA-12's in ported Q Bomb,(the BIG one, tuned to about 35hz, I actually had to face the subs into the cab, cause firing back into the trunk, though it hit harder, was too much, between the bass, rattles, and panel flex, was drowning out my highs a little too much for my SQ tastes these days) and the amp rack running the Kicker 1800 (subs) and separate amps on the Crescendo Mezzo components in front and midbass in the rear doors. Kinda glad I went with the SA's now. To be a lower end Sundown sub, they shit all over my old JL W3's (and the W6's I had awhile back) and actually cost less. The U18 would have been miserable, haha.
How many of the SA's do you have? Do they hit pretty hard? I recently bought a 93 300zx and was thinking of putting one in it. I was only going to go with one 12 because I really don't want to lose all of what little trunk space I have. I have a zv5 15 in my other car but really don't feel like dropping that much on a sub again haha.
Yeah Son, the SA's hit hard as fuck. Like I said, with the JL's I had to face them into the trunk, to get enough bass out of em. The SA's I had to face into the cab, because they were hitting TOO hard and drowning out my high's and mids. I go for SQ more than SPL these days. What impresses me most is how LOW they drop. At 30hz, my 12w3's would bottom out (where you could feel a rumble, but not really hear the note clearly) With the SA's you can feel and hear the notes super crispy.
Obviously the size of the enclosure ( bigger box = more air space = lower tune) comes into play, but the SA's play very nicely down to 30hz) My box is tuned around 35hz-45hz, so tend to hit hardest around that range) and will crank out solid bass from (30 hz -80hz). I have the LPF set at 80hz and then the HPF set at 80hz for the midbass amp to go up from there, it's LPF set in sync with the HPF on the amp for the Components and so on.
Running 2 of these on a Kicker CX1200 now, gain set slighly above 1/4 turn, (cx1800 was still too much), wired parallel for 1ohm final at the amp, so each is getting about 600 watts rms, and yeah, the slam, get low as fuck, but balance very nicely with the mids and highs. Crossed over as noted above and can hear everything crisp and clear at all volume level. SQ, baby. These are the ones I have. Got em here
