going to give this a listen at work.

Roger without facial hair looks like a thin Michael Moore.

That Roger dude looks like a scary creep without facial hair. It's frightening to look at.

Jerry also prays for little shmatty 🙏

why didn't you just listen to it and then make a comment? what does anyone get out of hearing your plans for tomorrow? you're just wasting space here bud.
this episode seemed pretty heavily edited. lots of awkward conversations that abruptly ended, also seems like chris roberts doesn't listen to anything his guests say as he just continues to talk. also funny how he can somehow slide the sw flip manny into any conversation no matter how randomly and/or out of place. there was hardly any talk of any of the videos jerry has been in besides bag of suck which we've all heard about a million times over along with the fuckin'storm flip. honestly this one was pretty lazy for what it could've been in my eyes but it was still alright just cause of it being jerry.

I love the conversation about the Table For 1 blog. As for why it weirds so many people out, I'd say that the act of eating alone is not a beneficial behavior in scenarios where food is scarce. Primal instinct to want to group up and protect the food source. That or people are just self conscious.
-
I didn't realize until this episode that he is actually off Chocolate

Boys of Summer was a sleeper video of 2015, really enjoyed that one. Super laid back, STACKED cast (probably one of the best ever), great soundtrack.. what else could you want? Andrew Allen closing it out with Band on the Run was classic, Gino's Gardere line at the end of the FA part, Olson kicking it off with a surprising amount of stuff, and they mixed all sorts of footage formats (mostly iPhone with fisheye adaptors but also VX, DSLR, HVX, etc) but somehow it worked. Looking forward to the sequel.
Also where can I get some Sci-Fantasy gear?
-
Once in awhile, the bro vibe of this show bothers the shit out of me. I knew they would not talk about him leaving Chocolate and that's exactly what happened. This was especially boring for a skater that I really admire.

They talk about it at 1:21:15.

They really don't.

me too. my shop just got a few of the beavis completes. I guess it's old stock, which is why they got a few.

The really struggled at the end to keep the conversation going and the storm flip topic has been beaten to death. I like the table for 1 blog though.

I have not watched this episode, but in general, agreed. I find it strange they seem to take pride in doing little to no prep for guests. Roger and Kelly know their stuff, but it usually comes out as a reaction to what the guest says, not as the source of questions and conversation.
I can't remember who it was, but something along the lines of the Nine Club creating an online archive of skate history was said on the show at some point. To me, that's Chromeball Incident, which probably has the most consistently nerd-friendly, detailed, and novel interviews relative other skate media. Imagine if Chops released audio for those?

going to give this comment a good thorough read at work.

Man I've been waiting for a Jerry episode forever, but this one was a let down.
Casual conversation is fine, but this was such low energy.
-
I'll also agree with the comment about this only being good because it was Jerry; it certainly could have been better.
However, the irony that is Crob mentioning that he dislikes that "every person tags him in Courthouse tricks" is kind of funny, considering he is probably the sole person who has cultivated this stigma about himself.

I've had this conversation with people for years and it also seems to be they feel like losers. I myself eat alone sometimes and actually enjoy it

CRob sucks as an interviewer, yet is constantly praising himself and the show. It's the most annoying thing ever. I don't understand how they can put all this work into shooting the show, editing it, pulling out related memorabilia for guests, etc. and then do absolutely zero research for the actual conversation. Time and time again CRob shows how ignorant and basic he is (constantly praising Amazon, not understanding net profits, asking someone whose last name is Dill why they're called "Pickle," etc.) all while thinking he's the Howard Stern of skateboarding interviews.
-
love hearing all those old SJ spots...I still hit up Greer Palo Alto
-
Jerry is in my top 3 but I felt this episode kinda boring, maybe because it's pretty much the same interview that I heard in the the Bunt.

It's as if a semi-relevant professional skater with a dwindling career decided to start a podcast despite having absolutely no background in entertainment, broadcasting, or interviewing. I never would have guessed that he would perform so poorly.
I'm not listening to this. Does Jerry have a new board sponsor or what?

I am commenting on this thread at work.
-
I have the day off of work today. Might give this a listen while I clean the kitchen.
-
none of the toads or any other wild creatures i'm friends with even have kitchens you're lying
-
I actually really loved Jerry's dry responses to Crob's neediness and watching him pull together great anecdotes and jokes out of empty questions. He's one of my favorites on and off the board and I hope he expands Sci Fi Fantasy into a board brand. Curious who the Sci Fi Fantasy dream team would consist of.
-
Just about to chow down some eggs on toast before I jump in the shower and rub one out quickly while a coffee is brewing, following which I'll give this a listen while I do laundry and vacuum the house.
The anticipation is truly palpable.
-
Chocolate's site still has Jerry listed on the team
-
There needs to be a better SK8 podcast with the same guests. Too much corny laughter and amazed at every word type shit. Just have a convo and react like a curious human.
-
"maybe a nine club collab in the future?"
@ every guest with a side project

Perfect encapsulation of 9 Club. This is why the quality of episodes varies so wildly - it's entirely a function of the ability of the guest to weave stories.
Occasionally questions will prod the guest in an interesting direction but it seems like it's wholly by accident.

The thing that bothers me the most is that it's not as if Crob would actually have to do a whole lot of work when it comes to research. All he would have to do is ask the dude sitting next to him for some info. His co-host is seriously a fountain of skate knowledge, but for the most part is treated like an on-air fact checker. If Chops or Brink stepped up and did a similar show they could take these guys out in a heartbeat.

The Nine Club is much, much better than the Weekend Buzz. Not even comparable. And CBI is great but part of that is it's format, it wouldn't translate to video podcast.
Nine Club is the best thing in skate media right now by far (outside of skating) and it is completely free. Gotta love the armchair producers in here complaining about shit.

You guys still expect way too much from Crob and team. It's been 88 episodes of this mess. this isn't 60 minutes. You should know by now they're not here to ask any hard questions,
-
I’m waiting patiently for you to continue
-
Anyone else think Jerry looks like the asian don cheadle?
-
its As if crob didn’t know bag of suck existed. Throw some respect on Jerry’s career fool
I liked the EA game talk, he was pretty honest about everything, money etc. he definitely talked about leaving chocolate saying he felt like he didn’t fit in.
Also kinda sounded like crob was giving him shade cause he only stayed on chocolate for two year. He did have a thrasher cover on a chocolate board.
It was funny when he forced Jerry to talk about tv. kirchart doing demos for them Was a good story
I thought Jerry delivered in his dry sarcastic humor,
-
Didn't finish it, but was there no talk of Dylan Rieder? They were both on Osiris together for a while
-
I really want a jerry shirt trade acid for one
-
Didn't finish it, but was there no talk of Dylan Rieder? They were both on Osiris together for a while
They barely talked about Dylan with AO and Dill, why would you expect Jerry Hsu's one to talk about him?
I think it was in Dylan's Epicly Later'd that Jerry joked that O'Dell was just going to him for interviews on anyone.
-
Loved it. Jerry was actually on Chocolate for 4 years
Also did they say Stay Gold came out in 2007? :o ???

This cemented for me how much better The Bunt is than The 9 Club. Don’t get me wrong, I like them both, but I’m way more hyped when a new Bunt is up. Compare the two Jerry interviews, one is vanilla as fuck and the other (The Bunt) he actually speaks his mind on some stuff (the whole Magenta bit)
YA DIG!?

I think they're two very different things.
For instance - The Bunt is insufferably bad, while The 9 Club is actually watchable. ;)
Listen to The Bunt if you hear someone talked some shit, and skip to that part. Save your ears. The hosts sound like two guys who know someone who knows Drake. Kinda like sitting through your sister and her friends gossiping for 2 hours just so you can hear Shelley say she called Amber a cunt once at summer camp. Industry shattering stuff.
-
I think it would be insanely cool if the Bunt got on the Nine Club. Would like to see how those guys act on camera as apposed to on a iChat audio iinterview.

I still can’t believe people actually watch the interviews rather than just listening as a podcast.
And you can call it gossip if you want, but if you’re not into the dirty stuff like that, then what the fuck do you post on SLAP for? Besides, it’s not like it’s hearsay, the stories are coming directly from the horses mouth. thought it was a good episode but didn't go in expecting certain content. there's worst things to listen to while i'm working at 6am.

since this thread is making complaints about nine club... they have the least diverse guests, feels like they're kinda pandering to californians. I'm European though, so guess I can't relate/give a shit about Americans getting sponsored by their local shop. still listen to their podcast though

I've never been able to listen to talk radio, tried doing The Bunt - even tried 9 Club without the video - nope. Just not into it without being able to see the people talking. Interviews are a read or watch thing for me. Never listened to a podcast in my life aside from a few attempts at stomaching The Bunt. I don't use a smartphone, and I feel like a lot of the audience of podcasts are listening on their phones while on the go etc.
Love shit talk, but there's no way I'm going to listen to two wannabe cool guys saying "ya dig" or "ya smell me" every 2 seconds just to get to the one part of a 2 hour interview when James Hardy says he doesn't like Heath. The times stamps are a life saver for that reason.
I hear people raving about 9 Club episodes all the time - only hear about The Bunt on here, and I'm in Canada. Most skaters I talk to say the same shit about annoying hosts, if they've even listened at all. It appeals to a less mature audience for sure, and that's fine. Like you said - 2 different shows.
-
Also - sports talk on a skate 'show'? No thanks. Favorite sports moment - the day I quit soccer and never played or watched sports again in my life.
-
I never knew EA Skate was Danny Way's thing, then again I'm hardly into video games. Jerry's rad, but this nine club is one of those episodes that doesn't dig any deeper into what's been covered already. The Bunt is good because the interviews are usually under an hour, everything else is useless to hear. As said before, you can't expect too much from this group of skaters and their show. Outside of that, unless it's a Jason Dill,Grosso,or Jamie Thomas type the interview and stories will be limited.

always avoided this stuff cause i'm not gonna watch fuckin skateboarders sit around and stammer for 150 min but finally realized there was a podcast version on itunes so got into it.
as been said, eps vary wildly based on who is guest. jerry is just like the mellowest guy ever. nobody's fault that this one wasn't riveting.
the show could be great with just a couple tweaks namely:
- get an editor. u got 17 fuckn cameras in a 10ft room for why?! cut these down to 90-120 min max and it'll drastically improve.
- make roberts sit and listen to isolated audio of himself listening to the guest. he sounds like if u listen to a track with just puffy's ad-libs and it sucks.
- the third one is too mean to say but you know what it is...
-
I thought this was a good episode. I may have been a little more lackluster than some of the other episodes, but I think may just be due to Jerry’s laid back personally. I think he is one of the best to ever do it and have nothing but respect for his skating and feel like this podcast played out exactly how one would think it would considering his reserved demeanor. I really appreciate his dry and witty sense of humor.
-
I just enjoy hearing people like Jerry bullshit. Nice to hear him talk about Nazi Gold since it predated Insta.
For all the people somehow STILL bitching about the 9 Club, the Chief has one coming called "Thrill of It All" so we'll have something else to compare it to. Looks like he just interviewed Ellington and Mumford. Comin' out swingin'
-
I didn't know about the Table For One blog. I actually didn't know that so many people had such an aversion to sitting alone when they eat.
There are some things I don't do alone, like going to movies or concerts. But movies and concerts are more social; eating is basic. I understand not wanting to go to a nice restaurant or a cake shop or something alone since they lend themselves to being social. But going into a diner, or a McDonald's, or a cafe alone to get something to eat is pretty normal, I'd say. Unless you're in a rush, then just go to the drive-thru or order it to go.

For all the people somehow STILL bitching about the 9 Club, the Chief has one coming called "Thrill of It All" so we'll have something else to compare it to. Looks like he just interviewed Ellington and Mumford. Comin' out swingin'
TOIA coming next month, I wonder if they will have a supporting cast or if it will just be JT and guest.

i really hope adrian lopez is his andy richter and that every episode's intro is his 'most chose the stairs' WTH intro and the guest comes out to hallowed be thy name.

The Jamie Thomas Nine Club was one of the best episodes. Pretty sure it is the longest. Jamie can definitely tell a story and drove the episode for the most part. Looking forward to his show and I hope he interviews the Nine Club guys individually.
Jerry's rad, but this nine club is one of those episodes that doesn't dig any deeper into what's been covered already.
Pretty sure this is the first time Jerry has publicly spoken about his departure from Chocolate and what Sci-Fi Fantasy actual is.
-
We all knew it but The Nine Club continues to be just a way for Chris Roberts to be pro instead of an actual podcast. This episode just made it that much more sad.
-
The amount of armchair producers in every 9 Club thread is hilarious. Would love to see the train wreck of a show some of you critics would produce... though a SLAP produced show is somewhat of an enticing idea.

Boring episode, but I also think Jerry Hsu, Brian Anderson, and Spanly have been interviewed to death for the past 10 years. Kinda hard to hear new stuff when they get on EVERYTHING.

I always come on here and read what you guys thought of the episode before I watch it, it lowers my expectations and usually ends in me being happy and entertained while all of you are huffing over CROB's ad libs and Rog's babyface.

always avoided this stuff cause i'm not gonna watch fuckin skateboarders sit around and stammer for 150 min but finally realized there was a podcast version on itunes so got into it.
as been said, eps vary wildly based on who is guest. jerry is just like the mellowest guy ever. nobody's fault that this one wasn't riveting.
the show could be great with just a couple tweaks namely:
- get an editor. u got 17 fuckn cameras in a 10ft room for why?! cut these down to 90-120 min max and it'll drastically improve.
- make roberts sit and listen to isolated audio of himself listening to the guest. he sounds like if u listen to a track with just puffy's ad-libs and it sucks.
- the third one is too mean to say but you know what it is...
... replace kelly(k fatty) with one of those drinking bird toys and a laugh track.
-
Rog's babyface.

since this thread is making complaints about nine club... they have the least diverse guests, feels like they're kinda pandering to californians. I'm European though, so guess I can't relate/give a shit about Americans getting sponsored by their local shop. still listen to their podcast though
In one sense I agree about the diversity but it's kinda wild they've still only had one woman (Nora) on the show and one (Alexis Sablone) do a fifteen minute spot on the experience.

It looks like they pick people who people are asking them to interview...and lets be honest there probably aren't that many women skaters that watch the show, and didnt Noras interview drop around the same time Vanessa Torres was talking about Street League gender pay gap?

They probably are still probably working through a backlog of people that have asked them, sure, but you'd hope at some point they'll pick up on the increasing market and narratability of female skaters since it would likely expand their audience. Jerry's great but, like people have said, it was basically the same shit he said on The Bunt, harping on the storm flip, etc. Even if it's not their main audience (which, really, who knows? Probably not their main audience but I wouldn't assume an inconsequential amount of female skaters are listening to the show), I'd much rather hear from Elissa or Lacey Baker or even someone more up-and-coming like Nicole Hause or Allysha Le or someone more behind the scenes like Mimi Knoop over Jon Buscemi or a rehashing of the same interview Jerry or Nyjah has given countless times before.

The best interviews are with skate industry legends, or legendary pros - not up and coming ams or average pros. Elissa might have some interesting shit to say, though she hasn't been relevant in skating since the 90s's, and her career was very short lived. She's also been interviewed so much over the years that it would be hard to not rehash all the same topics (toy machine, piss drunx, surfing, being a girl skater etc). Once the ladies have been in the game for a long time and earned some legend status, get em' on for sure. Nora's was boring and forgettable. The key to an interesting episode is a long and exciting career, mixed with a strong personality - not talking about how you were the only girl skating with a crew of boys at the Walmart just 4 years ago.

Not pretending to care about anything. They can choose to mix up the guest pool or not; I'd listen either way. But some of these episodes (as people have said) have been pretty boring and maybe hearing from someone with a different perspective would help mix things up a bit.
That said, you seem oddly offended by the idea of wanting a slightly more diverse set of guests. Weird, but whatever.

Tom Penny should be a very interesting interview...if they have the balls to ask him the right questions...but yeah, it might never happen because he lives in Barça and the Nine Club studios are in Cali.

I haven't heard Tom have a conversation lately, but I'll bet geography is the least of the obstacles that would have to be overcome for him to provide an entertaining interview on this show.

I remember a Thrasher interview a few years ago. Rowley interviewed him and the questions were each a paragraph long, followed by super short, one-sentence answers. It was a bummer.
-
wait, what did Jerry say about Magenta?
-
I usually can’t sit through these due to Kelly’s laugh and Crob’s lack of conversation with actual substance, but I loved this one.
Jerry’s consistently sarcastic rebuttals made me laugh way more than every other guest aside from maybe Grosso, AO, or Steve Olson.
I had no idea that Chocolate let Jerry go through a fucking Instagram story. So much for paying respect to someone who most likely helped their company through their biggest slump prior to their current financial instability.
I already knew Crailtap couldn’t be trusted, but to treat someone as well-respected in the industry as Jerry like some flow kid is a massive slap to the face.
TL;DR: Jerry and his sarcasm are incredible, and Crailtap can suck my dick from the back.
-
i thought jerry quit
-
https://www.instagram.com/p/BelZkZZhjfr/?hl=en&taken-by=thenutdailynews
The quality of the show is entirely dependent on the ability of the guest to tell stories... Crob just needs to get out of the way. Jamie Thomas was the best at it. Marc Johnson was great as well. I found Mike Carroll's vocal fry and complete lack of energy just intolerable. Jerry was somewhere in the middle, worth a listen (podcast during the commute).
The complete lack of knowledge about skate history and industry by Crob is always surprising.
They also need to get Kelly out of there. The guy adds nothing and his "Dude, Bro"s are embarrassing.

Where are you guys coming up with this shit??? It's completely contradictory to what Jerry himself says in this very interview. He specifically says he quit -- Chocolate just made their public announcement to the world via IG story.
