So, to "make it" in the skating biz you can either
-rip and know someone w/ a company
-enter the contest arena and never leave
-put out a pj ladd/jimmy mcdonald quality homie vid part and weasle your way in
or...
just tell everyone you're pro untill it's regarded as truth?
My roommate came home wasted from the bars llast night with a bunch of boards and stickers, he walked in the door and said "I lost my wallet somewhere out there, but I'm sponsored now, so I guess its ok."
I guess that is a way too? Sponsorship in reality is totally regular.
sounds like your roomate sponsored himself
No, I actually met the dude who is "sponsoring" him. Its definitely not a legitimate pathway-to-pro-status type situation, but the dude gave him free boards, so he's hyped.
The whole "sponsored" thing has become a joke with us. Go up to him at a park and be like "You are soooooo good, are you sponsored?"
"Yeah, but I can't keep talking to you right now, I'm sponsored."
hahah, has he ever tried the "aye babe, you ever been w/ a sponsored skateboarder before?" line?
Man, I've gotten lakais monthly from a rep I've never met, who's never seen my "sponsor me video" or anything, for over four years, and other stuff from other companies here and there, all on the good word of one of my best friends who happens to run a shop
It's sorta weird explaining to kids that're better than me, and want to persue skateboarding that I get helped out just cause someone put in a good word for me, and that no one within Lakai above the rep's ever heard my name.
Stoked for your friend, though. I'm seeing a lot of real sick local companies springing up left and right, hopefully it'll be a cool situation. But how the fuck did he hook that up? Did he just drunkenly talk the tm/owner into hookin him up? If so that's more commendable than the above listed methods hahah
That's the way the whole sponsorship thing goes. Its all a bunch of homies hooking each other up to some degree. Word of mouth means a lot more than the 20 sponsor me tapes he got this month that he'll never even bother watching.
I don't know exactly what happened with my roommate still. I guess the guy knew a friend of my roommate, and they all got wasted and hung out, they started talking about skating, the friend hyped my roommate up like only a complete drunken ass can, he got embarassed, and then I don't know what the hell happened, but by the end of the night he had given him boards and the next day even promised more. I don't get it.
I look into Doug Brown's eyes in the Ogio ad, and I feel sad knowing that a man who is so self-diluded may be having to face up to himself after facing a barrage mockery on this message board. Then I remember that he threatened to sue Slap, and think, fuck this bitch.
