it's the SLAP MB's fault.

the constant presence of "dicks on the forehead" can act as a gateway penis to a young impressionable skater boy and will lead him into other, more penetrative realms of gaydom if not checked by severe kooking and brown cords/binge drinking. although if the cords are juuuust too short and the beer is high gravity, it might be too late. he could already be gaping.

Ask Tony Hawk who kicked a skater off Birdhouse for coming out of the closet or Danny Way who may or may not have been an accessory to murder of a gay man or all the skaters who use terms like fag and gay in a negative context . Almost every skater I know isn't homophobic, the problem is that the majority of people who buy skate stuff are little kids and the industry is scared that their parents will boycott them if they allowed people to be who they are.

I think a lot of it is just that people are too stupid to realize that "faggot," "gay," etc. are just as bad as the n-bomb, even without harboring any serious hate.

Interesting you bring up Elissa Steamer, Whiteley, because I think there's still plenty of that stuff going on. I can't watch Marisa Dal Santo footage in a public setting without hearing someone talk about whether she's attractive or declare that they can probably beat her in a game of skate. If that's the case, I don't know how soon the homophobia stuff will fade away.

I think you have a good point. I know that I have my moments of idiocy and use "gay" instead of using "lame" to describe something that I do not find agreeable to my taste.

As for homophobia in skating, its simply a reflection of society. I never bought the whole "because you skate, you are automatically the most open minded person ever" rhetoric to begin with so maybe its less of a head scratcher for me.

Skateboarders as a whole are no more enlightened than any other cohort of teenage boys, despite all the misty-eyed editorializing that goes on in skateboard magazines about how "creative" and "individualistic" we are. Generally it's just a matter of calling different shit "gay" as compared to your usual adolescent douchebag. The girl skater thing is a pretty good example of this kind of bullshit; just look at any thread about Elissa or basically any sponsored female skater - almost inevitably on the first page someone's gonna ask "but would you fuck her?" or make some other equally regular and chauvinistic comment. Homophobia is rampant everywhere, its just not talked about a whole lot in skateboarding or in other "manly" sports.

soccer, football.. etc. athletes can come out because they still have a multi million dollar contract waiting when the dust settles.. because they have a wider demographic. if a pic surfaced of an am at a bar making out with a dude. the higher ups would act like there is a stark change in how they thought they could market the kid. he would most likely get dropped.

in the next year....
there will be a flamboyantly gay skater that kills it and/or a seasoned pro will come out.
