With rock and rolls you're expected to smash the wheels, strike a pose and 180 back in

With disasters you're expected to smash quick and drop in ASAP, no wheel touch

I always hated doing proper rock n rolls so I just boardslide instead so I don't kook the sesh.

Can someone explain?

Maybe it's the air factor? I've seen both I.e Patrick Melcher, Justin Strubing, Chris Pastras, Donny Barley, Bam - I'm sure there's more. .

I was hoping the older, more grizzled veterans would give us their opinion.

Probably cause sitting on disasters makes it look like you're hesitant/scared of going back in, while with rock n rolls it looks more like you're comfortable with the trick.

I know that when I was learning disasters, I definitely camped on them for awhile, before leaning forward into the transition, cause I was afraid of slamming.

It's kind of the same reason why I don't like crooked grinds to fakie, cause that's how I first did them, just falling off the ledge.

I'm not really old or grizzled though.

I'm used to seeing kids deck em' mostly because they're learning. If you deck em' and you aren't a child they have to sound and feel so good slapping down! I think its a whole thing not to because the range of motion and how disasters flow compared to a rock n roll is different. Might have to ask Duane Peters.

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

Answer, thats just the way it is. You ever smashed a front d from 5 feet in the air straight back in to the tranny? No hang up. It's exhilarating.

I was hoping the older, more grizzled veterans would give us their opinion.

not sure about the striking a pose part.. my (probably antiquated) opinion is that a rocknroll should be one fluid movement, decked yes, but at this point your shoulders are already turned back into the transition. back foot should be turned over and the back wheels should rotate in place (no sliding down the transition)

disasters look and feel best (to me) when you hit that sweet spot that 'bounces' them back into the ramp with very little front foot help. I don't dig that back truck smash type of disaster at all.

Its easier and ugly to just barely lap your truck over on a rock n roll.
Disasters to me seem like they were invented do on the way in after an ollie or air. The more it looks like you hung up on the way in and survived, and the less it looks like you hung up there to take a little lunch break, the better it is. Its not really about lapped or not, if you can lap it and make it look like that was just a smack on the way into tranny, then its still rad.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”

Yeah, it's easier to dink a little rock and roll real quick than it is to deck it, but if you've already figured out how to air over the lip it is easier to land at a stop in a disaster, then roll back in, then it is to just smash it down real quick. Things that are more difficult generally look cooler.

The point of a rock and roll is to rock and roll....the more rock the better.....that's why you deck.....the a disaster is about making noise...and when you deck on one...the wheels absorb the smash.....that said GTs back d on vert is gnarly......on a mini it's not...

It's not about how decked the the disaster is - it's the amount of time you spend camped out on the lip that makes it less appealing.
