Final Cut Pro X and a VX
« on: February 24, 2020, 01:02:05 PM »
Is anyone out there using this setup? Or is everyone using a VX using Premiere or FCP7?

I filmed a full length with this setup. The audio was off on most clips. It's an easy fix but time consuming when you're fixing audio on every trick. Other than that I had no problems. I switched back to filming with my HPX170 since then.

So far I can’t get FCPX to even capture the audio. What capture cam did you use if you don’t mind me asking?

I’m actually coming from using my HMC150 back to MiniDV to change things up a bit because I miss filming in 4:3(filmed with a couple of gl2’s for 10+ years)

So, update. I got a different firewire to go directly to the VX instead of using the Canon XHA1 as a capture camera and now it works with FCPX, so yeah - awesome. Now I just need to get a Sony handy cam of some type and cross my fingers that it also works.

I don't have a VX but I use a lot of DV decks for analog camera capture, and FCPX is so much better than Premiere for capturing DV tapes.  Super solid for me.

Interesting, I was about to buy an old 2009ish Macbook Pro just to run FCP7 for the VX. Dude only wanted $140 and it already has Final Cut installed - I don’t REALLY need it now, but part of me still wants to get it just so I can use FCP7 again.

Keep in mind the "E" means you're looking up the PAL version. The NTSC D1000s are quite a bit cheaper. You can just use a cheap capture camera for the same result either way.

I'm super new to the miniDV game (and I'm using a TRV900 fwiw), but can't you capture in QuickTime? or am I screwing myself over?

Yep, I run this setup.

I capture all my tapes via an old TRV to save the heads on my VXs, though. Got back into filming VX around 3 years ago and I haven't had any issues thus far.
