it's allowed as a carry on

unless you're flying Mexicana Airlines

I've traveled alot this year (to Australia and just recently the East Coast) and I swear it's just up to the individuals working that day.  Most times I take it with me on the plane, but every once in a while I'll get some asshole who will make me check it in.  One lady at the Brisbane Airport told me that no airplane ever would let me carry a skateboard on and that it was official since 9/11.  I told her I had done it at least 4 times in the last two months.  She told me that I was wrong and that I had actually not ever taken a skateboard on an airplane.  Then just last week I asked if I should check it when flying to Toronto...and the girl was like "Why would you check it?"

Basically it's random and depends if the person likes skateboarding or not.

I used to just hold it with my hands, and that's when I would run into some problems. Like others mentioned, they would sometimes try to make me check it in, or not even care. What I've done ever since is stuck it into the luggage. Not even strapped or nothing, just get like half in there. Nobody has told me anything since.

Last time I flew my friends and I had to check our boards.  We got up to our terminal and there was another person on our flight who was able to carry theirs on.

In Europe they never let me take my skateboard onto a flight. I always need to put it to my bag and than tape it around. Or if it's not taped around enough - they put the sticker on it and put it as extra luggage for free

i went out to vegas for a wedding and brought my board and skate tool.  they made me check the board and confiscated the skate tool.
they said  that i could take the plane apart with it...yeah the whole fucking plane...with a fucking skate tool....idiots!

since then, i just duct tape my board to bottom of my luggage and check it in.
why bother trying to fight with those douche bags.

I always just strapped it on an actual skate bag and then took it off when i got on the plane and stuck it in the overhead bin(not wheels down obviously) and then jam the backpack under the seat.

the first time i brought my board on a plane, they let me carry it on the plane to my destination, but on the way back they wouldnt let me carry it on. that sums up what i think the policy is: subject to the airline representative's inconsistent judgement call. ive looked it up on a few airline policies, and i havent seen skateboards listed under items not possible to bring on, which leaves it in a gray area.

I hate the extra burden of not knowing if Im gonna have to deal with this at the gate, so I bought a skate bag that covers the whole board and has a little room for misc items. When it's full it doesnt look like anything "hazardous," and I havent had any problems since, as it suffices as a carry on bag.

here's the bag i got: http://shop.vans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=612174&storeId=10001&catalogId=10101&langId=-1&vcategoryId=SEARCH

Yeah...it's hit and miss with a skateboard...but never try to bring a skate tool along.  They will always confiscate it.  I learned that the hard way as well.

I fly in the US two or three times a year, I always have my board strapped to my backpack and I've never been hassled about it. I usually fly United or American, but I think I've gone through all the major domestic airlines except Jet Blue.

I've flown a lot with a board in the past 14 years and have never had to check a board. I just never ask and they never say anything.

Just be safe and check it in. It helps if u have a big suitcase to put the board/decks under ur clothes.

I got away with a knife on my way down to florida last spring, didn't even know I had it with me. Opened my bag when I got there and it was in the side pocket.Needless to say,I've never had problems flying with my skateboard.

Denver's airport is rad... it's the only one I know of that still has a smoking area. You gotta buy a beverage in the lounge, but the place is a life saver... especially if smoking and pills is part of your flight-therapy like it is for me.
