I'm pretty sure you can replace SLS with most, maybe all, high profile "contests". They really should just be called "shows" because that's all they are, invite only shows that happen to be paying people for tricks.

I just though it was an Olympic working prototype to be sold when the money was right?
Same for the Vans park series, for the sake of bias.

Bummer. Seems like more than a Street League problem. Of course the majority of us if not all of us knew Street League is really nothing more than a money grab. Sure, they pay the top finishers handsomely, but most of those in the crowd are probably pretty foreign to skateboarding. Kind of like when you go to any sporting event, the real fans are in the nosebleeds and the fake fans are in the suites and lower level seating. Only difference here is that the real fans of skateboarding aren't in the building at all.

And they aren't watching the Webcast either.

It's the same with most soft goods, it's the non-skaters buying the products and buying the "lifestyle". DC, VANS, ADIDAS, NIKE, HUF, Thrasher, Element, Palace.......etc etc sells more to non-skaters than skaters. It's obvious. There's nothing wrong with it either, but pretending that it's not so is just silly.

SLS is a product and the Kooks lap it up.

I can't believe people are trying to make money off skateboarding.  this is an outrage!

Beer is free?

(Although it is sketchy to have an official knife sponsor in the UK. That would be like Smith & Wesson sponsoring Street League in the US.)

Are you saying street league is a corporate money grab? Get the fuck outta here!
Though it was interesting finding out about monster's corporate culture and the fact that you have to be 16 to buy them.

It took me like 4 minutes to read dude.

And Free (imo) is one of the best magazines out there. It's coverage of UK and european skating is top notch with articles that arent written by 11 year olds (Thrasher) and far superior photography.

So will you be able to watch online for free without signing up or downloading the ETN app?

It is pretty indicative of the shit show that all Dyrdek was able to negotiate was an 11PM slot for the finals on ESPN2 days later.

It's not rando. They're one of the biggest mags in Europe. Out of UK.

It's too nuanced to summarize effectively, you really should read it. But basically, local officials bulldozed a nearby DIY weeks before SLS. ONe of the main sponsors is a knife manufacturer, and there's a stabbing epidemic in the city where SLS is taking place. And, he event is taking place in a neighborhood where most people can't afford a ticket, and there's no kind of program to offer these folks a chance to attend at a free or discounted rate.

Tons of good sentiments in the article, lots of good reporting on facts. But in the end, it does come off a bit bias, and it seems like a condemnation of SLS, rather than a productive analysis of the situation. But, I can totally understand how someone who lives in that area wouldn't be interested in writing an unbiased piece.

Thank goodness for independent skate media like Free and (sometimes) Jenkem. An article like this would never even get past the proposal stage at Thrasher.

Cobra Cole selling knives to children and then acting all nice on the nine club. I always found those ads disturbing, but I understand them better now that I know virtually everyone in the USA carries some sort of knife with them everywhere. Freedom.

When was the last time you read an opinion piece on a real, pressing issue in the skateboard community that was actually well written? This article is awesome not just because it's different from the usual trash literature in the skate world, but because there's actually some food for thought in here.

Don't argue that people don't like to read about skateboarding anymore for no good reason. They stopped reading because of the garbage that usually fills our mags.

I didn't care at all about Street League, never seen it and was never going to see it, but this was informative (and well written). I would like to declare that I am now against Street League.

You may go about your day.
