just glanced over at their website, and mike barker is not on their team page. any guess as to where he went to? my guesses would be krooked or habitat. :-\
-
thats good, barker definitely deserves more than element
-
well, he was krooked flow before popwar, so who knows?
-
mike barker suprise part in inhabitants
-
he posted some sort of bulletin on myspace telling element to fuck off and telling people to support legit brands like girl/choco, habitat, etc.
-
thats actually good news, mike barker is to legit for element imo. hope he goes to krooked
-
i could obviously an eS/habitat connection... as to a part in inhabitants? dont think so...
-
element kicked him off for budget reasons they said... harsh... he filmed a fully good part for them then just gave him the boot. shits wack....
-
habitat would be a good look for him
-
apparently shulte quit after they kicked off barker

-
im stoked if he goes to krooked but i see him fitting better on habitat. either way im glad hes off element.
-

-
hes good but hes not up to par with the guys on habitat
-

becuase they made Tony Tave and Brent Atchley pro. Wayyyy too many pros.

seriously, plus all the element decks are way pricier, like i dunno if its the same with anybody elses shops, but some of the signature decks get to be 10 to 15 dollars more than any other brands we carry and the kids still buy the shit. and 50 dollar "DURATHANE" wheels? cmon, gimme a break

Damn, that's harsh.

Wouldn't mind seeing TimTim do the same thing.
-
Wouldn't mind seeing half the team do the same thing.
-

-
Johnny S. has always been cool to me and I ain't buying his stuff.
-
It would suck if somehow he landed am for Plan B. Anyways, good to see him off that. Hopefully he'll choose somethin good.

Expect a new colorway of the Chief soon. Fallen Cheif x Element shoe

Wait, I don't get it?

...so why is Mike calling Element coporate now, and not before when he got his big hefty paycheque? If he was sooooo Colbert Report, he'd have never ridden for the company in the first place.
If I had a high paying job in corporate at Wal Mart, I'm sure as hell not going to walk into the store with my arms down. I mean, could you imagine me at a sales meeting, making a pitch on employee benefits and raising minimum wage, then later getting escorted out my security wondering why they thought my ideas were so offensive?
You're either an idiot for pretending you didn't know all this in the first place, or you're calling us idiots for pretending you didn't sell out in the first place.

Maybe he ended up there because he was just following his buddy, Timtim. It really is a shame he wasted that switch tre ender on that shitty vid. I really dug his part and it was kind of a shocker to see him riding for them in the first place.

Brent Atchley deserves every penny he earns. Dude has the most original outlook on tranny skating in a generation.

Skate mental would be sick!
-
that guy is good
-
maybe he got promised a place on a legit team and now found the balls to speak out... paying bills i guess

Let's be real here for a minute. I'm not a fan of Element myself but if you start a money grubbing witch hunt in skateboarding ind. be prepared to spend a long time looking into it. Are you a fan of Brian Anderson, Cairo Foster, Mark Gonzales, Rick Howard, Heath Kirchart? Peter Romandetta? Arto? Stevie Williams? All these guys take cash to support and ride for CCS...THE ultimate independent shop killer. Do they ride for them because of love? Or keeping it real? I'd say no. I'd say they do it strictly for the check. Hell, most would probably even admit to it. That's a move definitely for cash out at the same time with a shiv to the gut of the small guy shops.
Girl/Choc keep it real? Or do they make boards in china specifically to make more profit?
There are some companies in skating that probably still do it for the right reasons and not as a money game but youll have to look under the surface quite a bit to find them. Ecspecailly shoe companies. Those outfits do motocroxx, surfing teams and worse. Just to make a buck when they make way more than board companies.
So lets not slap each other on the back too hard for supporting 'core' riders, teams and companies. Money has a way of making people do strange things and it runs deep in skating. Keep that in mind.
Did Barker really leave or was he let go? If he was let go it goes to reason he'd want to call out the company. But it's hard to put stock in it unless he up and left based on his values or something.
-
i'm glad he decided to ride for element for these last 8 months or whatever, so his footage could come out in their video and we could all enjoy it
-
Any business is run with the idea of profit and viability first. No one is clocking in everyday to break even or loose money.
They may have good intentions but at the end of the day they want to get paid.
Yes there are companies out there who stick to there guns and still try and do things the right way, not giving in to the masses but when you look at your numbers and you know that break even point is getting closer and closer ,sometimes lines are blurred just so you can stay around and do things you want. As a shop worker i know that we have a few questionable things in stock but we do it so it allows us to buy other things.Plus it brings a few extra people through the door and at the end of the day it pays my bills.
Do I feel like a sellout?
No.
Do i wish I could have a shop full of stuff I like?
Yes.
Billabong bought Element based purely on the brands logo and name appeal. The hardgoods were incidental to them, if it was up to them it would only be element soft goods(or so i assume).I have no doubts people that were on in the early days saw the changes immediately after Billabong bought them, hence oconnor, forbes and others bailing out because they saw how bad it was getting. Yes you get paid more when the bigger corporations get involved but who wants to deal with all the other shit.
As for girl/choc or anyone cutting costs by using china wood, they have some serious bills to pay, and if they can create some higher margins by lowering production costs then by all means do it, Sadly it seems to have compromised their quality in some peoples eyes but it allows them to have one of the deepest teams in skateboarding.2-3 dollars a board cheaper doesn't sound that crazy but on paper when the numbers get high it could pay your lease for the warehouse.
A lot of companies come off as being strictly for the love of it but all we get is a one sided view, get behind some closed doors and then see how you feel about your favorite underground collective. I have no doubts ISUCK has had to make some choices about his brands that didn't sit well with him. Sometimes you have to sacrifice something to just stay alive.

is it ever really a shocker that someone rides for element??

Element was the girlfriend everyone knew not to date. Maybe fool around with and finger, but never be in a relationship with. She'd be cool to hang out with the guys sometimes. She'd bring her hot friends over on weekends, and always help us look good. We all knew what she was about, so we treated her like the Torrie Spelling that she was.
...in comes Mike Barker on a poker night. He comes in SCREAAAMING and bitching about how Element just dumped him for no reason. He then starts pointing fingers at us, telling us to watch our backs because she'll fuck us over too!!! Blah blah blah wah wah wah...
"You in? BB, you gonna call?"
"Oh sorry... Mike's just kinda being loud. You guys wanna go downstairs? It's closer to the fridge anyway."
"Alright, let's go."
"...oh and... uh... Mike, you kinda gotta leave.... Sorry man. It's not personal.... Just a guy thing."

yea he's good and all. but how many parts/coverage has he had before he went pro? 1 part? I really like him and all but the point was that Element was putting too many pro's on their roster. Skaters come leave just as fast as they come in.

Element, as whack of a company as it is, pays some of my favorite skaters enough money to live on and then some, so I'm down for that at least.
Won't catch me riding or wearing any of their shit though.
-
Glad to hear this.
Now if Darrell and Tim Tim would get off...
-
FUCK...i thought it was gonna be muska

if anyones going to be the poster boy for self reformation of morale deprivation, its muska.

greg graffin is pretty intelligent but the fact that "vans" made a bad religion shoe pretty much makes greg graffin sort of contradictive.

Yeah, the fact that they went mainstream also muted the effectiveness of his points.
