Lee Bender on Health Care (via Skate Daily)
« on: October 12, 2009, 08:56:10 AM »

It's fucked up, and Lee's totally on point. As rich as this country is, we're ass backwards Puritans focused on making money off the sick. Fuck.

Edited to add this (unrelated to Lee, but related to the US health industry):

We need Malto to release the pic of Biebel drunk in an elevator with his wiener hanging out.

i'm in a similar situation.  all my meds are about 5 grand a month.  luckily i'm getting it for free through a charity hospital, but if i start making any money i'm going to lose my health care and then i'm fucked.  i'm currently stuck in quite the catch 22.

i can't fathom why so many people are so against health care reform.  this shit could literally happen to any of us.

it baffles me. i guess most people don't think that they will get struck down with a major illiness in their lives or don't realize how screwed you will be if that happens. insurance covers you while you can afford the premiums but once you get a major disease you most likely won't be able to work, will eventually get dropped and then you will have "pre-existing" and just be waiting around to die.

it's a sad state. people rather pay for pointless wars than shit that actually matters in our lives day to day.

They would rather keep it the same way.

So fucked, they would rather mob than progress.

If you support the big medical insurance company then in my eyes you oppose health care, because they don't want people well, they want them sick so they can keep making lots of $$$

In America.

We might ask ourselves what every other industrialized nation on earth does differently that makes them consistently ranked better than us in Health Care.

There are a lot of options:

Medicare-for-all(similar to single-payer in Canada, the pay rates problem would have to be fixed but this one makes the most sense
Major-government-regulations on private insurance(which is what countries like Switzerland do)
All-payer systems.

All of these choices are regarded the world over as much more humane, much better for everyone besides the ultra rich, but none of them is even being seriously proposed at this point.

What instead is being offered is basically a giant gift to the insurance companies in the form of a requirement that every american buy private insurance, while imposing very little serious reforms or cost savings.

Meanwhile people are yelling about socialism and death panels.

It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.

They don't make shit loads of money off the sick people that is why many times they try to find ways to drop patients with very high cost illnesses.   It's the same as any insurance industry they don't want to take on any client with a high liability because that is how they lose money when they have to pay it out.

What I got out of the video was that your insurance continues to cover you but raises your premiums until they're essentially impossible for you to pay, at which point you get left in the cold accruing debt. So if that's what you mean by "finding ways to drop you" then I still don't see the point about it being justifiable. It's kinda fucked to think about it as justified based on the policies of other types of insurance too because you have to say at the end of the day your own body is worth more to insure than your house/car/etc. At a certain point it has to be more about social responsibility than business ethic.

You just explained the way insurance companies make assloads of money. You're right, but you also bolstered Vegan's statement. That's why all of this is so fucked. Healthcare for profit is ass backwards and fucking disgusting. Insurance companies are fucking leeches feeding on the sick, and the way they rape people causes more bankruptcies than anything else in the country.

It's the new indentured servitude... costs like Lee's and diabolik's and countless others... forced to either accumulate a debt you can never pay, or be forced to make sure you don't make too much bank or you wind up losing it anyway.

Give me socialized healthcare with a fucking "waiting list" over this any day. Any opposed to this has obviously never been on the fucked side of dealing with these insurance fucks.

In health care, you're a patient... to the insurer, you're either a profit margin or a liability.

Brilliant point, but that's when the mouth breathers on the right (Glenn Beckians) start calling you a commie.

Nothing makes me angrier than this issue.

You would think that if we could come together to form a sane social policy around any issue, it would be this one.

But when the majority of the population supports something like a public option, and it can't even make it into the bill to be voted on...

It's funny that we invade countries to "bring democracy" to its people, when we don't have a democracy.
