Title: Best DIY Spot tips? Resources?
Post by: mj23 on August 26, 2021, 02:24:02 PM
What are some of the best places to get tutorials or tips on making DIY spots? There are a couple spots in my new neighborhood that I think could benefit greatly from just a little bit of “improvement.” I’ve done plenty of rub brick/lacquer jobs in the past, and I think I’m ready to advance to a little light concrete work, like smoothing out barrier transitionS or adding beer can coping to the top of a bank.

Just build. If you mess up, you still learn in the process. If you even get one fun session out of it, you're already doing better as long as it's skateable.

I look at skatediy for inspiration on Instagram but not always.

^ That Ivory DIY is pretty epic. Always nice to see Peter Hewitt as Street Pete and Wes Kemer isn't too shabby either

I believe Ive said this before but I like what Dowdy has been doing with his DIY tutorials. He constantly fucks up he knows it but he just keeps going with it and shows that you can too. He has spots that have lasted almost ten years and he is no expert by any means

I also like the old Network How's Tuesday videos.

The one with Jason Carney doing to parking block ledge might be the first time anyone documented using glue to build a spot

For info on how the pros do concrete I've found Odell's videos to be pretty good. You get to see all the mistakes and short cuts the pros make

A friend and I have been wanting to make a cinderblock ledge for a while now. The last ledge I built had the angle iron stolen and hammered into. So perhaps something like this would be better for longevity? Also, is it typical to get your angle iron stolen?

Someone didn't like your spot or they hate skaters so they hammered your spot and took your iron so you can't use it to make another spot. I happens a lot

Heres what you do. It can be done with angle iron upside down but you only have a thin strip to grind on. Get 2" square tube and cut it to make a rectangle the same size as the top of your ledge or box. Cut about six to ten pieces of 1/2 rebar to fit between the two longest pieces. Line the rebar to lay over the center of the holes in the block you are going to use and mark where they need to be welded to the tube or angle. Now get yourself $50 and a twelve pack of Modelo and take your parts to a repair shop or weld shop about 40 minutes before closing and ask someone if they can help you out bring groms no one can say no to groms and Modelo.

At the spot line up your blocks glue them down then put your welded to on top with the rebar lining up with the holes and drop some rebar spikes into the holes and tie them to the welded rebar with rebar wire. Now concrete it all in with the last to bags for the top having more psi or Portland cement

Pretty bullet proof but it can still be destroyed so do it somewhere where nobody cares or nobody knows

I did not proof read this so I'm sure there are some grammar mistakes and so parts that are missing an explanation but I've gotta go

Thank you for the detailed response! I believe I know what you're saying. Basically, build a ladder out of two long strips of iron and some rebar. My friend who also skates owns a welder but has no helmet. I'm going to propose buying him a helmet in exchange for him being my partner in crime.  :D

I believe I know what you're saying. Basically, build a ladder out of two long strips of iron and some rebar.

Just so I'm clear (I hope) the rebar rungs of the ladder get encapsulated with concrete and the spikes going through the block holes that you tie to the rungs locks everything in when filled in with concrete. I would put square tube at both ends of the ladder to protect the ledge and stop the concrete from flowing out or slumping

You might have to to use a row of short blocks if 18" is too tall of a ledge for you. I line them up right in the middle of the aisle of the supply shop and act like I'm jumping on them before I buy.

I understand what you're saying completely. We're going to make several sized ledges. Been talking with some friends and it looks like a solid building crew is forming. Thank you for the help friend. ;D

What are those bags of stuff they use as support for the transition? Landscaping rocks or something?

It's a 3/4 rock sold by Quickrete to be used as a sub-base for slabs or what not. It's a brilliant technique

Instead of looking in the alley for something to add to your base just throw some bags of rocks at it and you're done

I would cut the concrete back a little (if needed) then screw and glue some square tubing on there. Then fix the concrete around it

you can get 12 foot sections for around $100
