i watched his fully flared, rites of passage, yeah right and seven steps to heaven part and i just cannot get down with his skating. the style isn't that great, the tricks he does and the way he does them are just meh. i watch those four parts multiple times and the only trick that even stuck out to me was the nollie flip, bs180 and sick cab flip he does off those three stair sets. other then that tho it all just felt like brainfeed.
it sucks too cuz i know how much marc has contributed to the skate community and from his interviews he seems like a super funny and intelligent dude. he is everything a street skater should be personality wise.
is it because i'm a gen z skater (2002)? maybe it's just something i had to "get" during that era? someone please explain to me the appeal

I honestly love his PS part, the Bowie song is all time. You can feel the emotion.
But I understand if you don’t enjoy ledge combos. That’s Marc.

well you're the main character in this dimension so its nice to see some growth. seems like this dimension is probably kind of an L though.

You know you are entitled with your own opinion. To be fair, like him or not, I still look up to him
-
There’s no reason why you have to force yourself to like something
-
He’s very good but I was never a big fan. No particular reason, just what he was doing didn’t inspire me to skate. Same with Mike Carroll, another all timer. But Guy or Darwin- fucking raddest. Skateboarding is like music, everybody has those things that make them love a certain thing but not another for no obvious reason. I wouldn’t overthink it
-
Oh it's really simple. It's just the exact opposite of everything you said.
this answered the question perfectly, kind of an L to write anything else
-
At a certain point in skating it's almost like comparing musicians or artists, people have different tastes for what they like with the result being the style/trick-selection will click for some and not others.

Lmao he's not even calling MJ bad or anything, just stating that his style doesn't click with him. Imagine getting upset at everyone that doesn't like a skater that you like.
-
I probably feel the same way about a lot of the current skaters I'm supposed to be into. And I too liked Jerry more than Marc but only marginally. I loved the Tiltmode videos but I had kook friends who'd often put on the VHS of Osiris The Storm unironically and would usually try to dip out after the first part with any random excuse...
-
It's okay if you can't get into his style. Plenty of skaters out there that are difficult for some to enjoy, in spite of how skilled they are. Personally, not a fan of watching Nyjah and Tyshawn skate, but damn are both good at what they do. I like Carl Aikens, Kellen James, Shuriken Shannon, and Gailea Momolu. Preferences.
MJ is a top 5 for me alongside Busenitz & Cory Kennedy. That shows where my preferences are at. Your top 5 shows where yours are at and MJ doesn't really mesh with those. Stain, Rowan, etc. all don't skate similarly to MJ so it checks out.
-
You must not understand greatness when you see it. Mj is timeless. One of the best to ever step foot on a skateboard. Do you like Tom Penny? Daewon?
-
Wait it's his interviews you like?
-
Ban him
He did cite Jerry as a fav so I think a stern warning might be more appropriate...
-
you should go back and watch his 411 parts, they are a lot more stripped down and you can see how insane his style is. his manuals dont evne move his feet or body at all its straight cold dude i dont understand whats not to like about that
-

My initial guess was that you simply have terrible taste, but now I believe you're just confused. So I'll try to explain.
What makes MJ unique (apart from the skills) is that he really knows how to stand on a board. Very few others do (Lotti, Gino, Puleo). This is particularly evident in Man Down. To begin approaching the truth that is MJ, start with the line with the bs 180 up the curb followed by a sw flip sw manual starting at 2.36. Try to appreciate its sublimity and build from there. Good luck.
-
Don’t forget the fucking fedoras.
-
nah he's onto something, i love yeah right and man down but post-hot chocolate MJ kinda sucks
fully flared - advertised as like, 30 or 35 minutes worth of footage and then the part comes out and it's full of dumb ledge combos and tacky tricks that he's clearly doing for the sake of doing, like frontside full cabs down three stairs and double flips on flat and no-pop 3 shuvs. the part is almost unwatchable because of how mid half of that footage is
pretty sweet - better but still skirting by on the strength of that david bowie song more than anything
away days and beyond - c'mon
Gotta keep in mind tho that he's pretty old. I think in FF he's already in his 30s. Away days and beyond realistically what do you expect? He had some gnarly shoulder/neck/nerve injury that's going to be a pretty massive speed bump for anyone already older
-
This is a truly brave post.
-
MJ is a perfect balance of tech and power, he makes it look good. best hardflips in the game, best back tails...this video is 26 years old...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nc0UKS8vrDQ
-
I’m wondering if OP might simply be questioning his sexuality if he can find something to like about Nik stain skating before Marc Johnson. Also hsu was sort of like an MJ protege? Jerry’s maple/tiltmode era footage looks extremely MJ inspired.

Get better taste
-
fully flared could have definintely been edited down to 1 song and it would have been a lot better. but i guess they didnt want to just dump that footage either. sohuld have made it a B-side extra that he had 2 extra parts, all those montages etc.
the vidoe would have been a lot better if it was just mike mo, jesus fernandez, biebel, carroll, 1 song worth of Mariano, and 1 song worth of MJ. the rest of that entire video could have been a side B DVD Extra with an extra mariano and MJ parts.

this is heresy but i havent seen a tom penny part yet. and idk i respect daewons skill but his parts aren't that fun. i'm just not down with tech-y flip trick mannys. i still cant believe he won over jerry for soty when jerry had bag of suck.

Soty used to be different it was about who did most for thrasher. I think hsu mostly shot with skateboarder at that time. Also it was less of a big deal as there were six mags all with their own awards.

honestly what sticks out to me most about jerry is just the unique style. like it really is one of a kind, if you saw a silhouette of his skating you'd instantly know it's him. he rips, does good tricks with style.
https://youtu.be/CcylfSZ_vSs
his black cat part is one of my favs. its just a classic. like look at the nollie inward heel he does at 2:41 and the way he pops out of that nosegrind right before it. or the way he floats over the rail at 3:16

history matters his parts have to be put in historical context to be fully appreciated if you just watch them in some abstract way like as if everything is just simultaneous and he released it yesterday You're not going to get it

I put Marc on the level of street skating that Mullen and Daewon are on- u know that top level that cut above the rest. U know that level of skating that they don't even invite those two to batb cuz u know it'll be a one sided bloodbath. Joking kind of but i put Marc on that god level tier he really deserves it with all the footage he's put out in his career.

Nik Stains fakie tres are disgusting and they barely leave the ground. Zero pop.
Apart from that he's the man.
But I just have to say it. They're awful

Mark Johnson was one video part away from auto-erotica fart inhalation asphyxiation but any trick of his looks better than that fs nose Nollie heel.
-
Each to his own , in my eyes Marc Johnson is one of the seminal figures in skateboarding history. After I read your post I rewatched Marc’s parts , and it really hit me …. This Marc Johnson guy is so special words would be inadequate to capture his brilliance on a skateboard.
It was such a shame that the skateboarding industry sided with Mike Carroll and Crailtap , one of the more bummer incidents in recent skateboarding history.

Hes smooth as hell. Dress shirt swag is a bit much though. But he never looks jerky, hes floaty. And he looked like that skating tiny wheels and shitty spots.

I like his 7 steps look and his current.

You ever seen ANYBODY else freeze their entire body in place during a manual? He’s one of the best of all time. He can just shit out a tech trick on the spot. Watch his clips in Biebel’s park. Bigheel to back blunt like fuck you talmbout
-
This might as well be a post about how someone can not understand greatness: love the guitar but doesnt get hendrix, loves singing but doesnt feel stevie wonder, loves basketball but doesn’t enjoy Michael jordan, enjoys art but hates van gogh. You are missing the entire fucking point. Either you are trolling or lack culture. Smoke some good weed, try to understand the contextual relevance of his time and place. Fuck me.

It’s chill we don’t all like the same skaters. Who has a style and trick selection you like? That would help show your perspective some I think
-
Must be weird to watch perfection and think like you do. I prefer a complex person with real life issues who kills it skating than a random Pro who's most interesting comment is "chillin chillin" or "let's go". The hypocrites who are so pro mental health but want to tear down a person who clearly has issues with it are just great people in general.
