If I’m crossing a line by posting this mods can feel free to delete.. but I feel like this is about to blow up. Long story short.. 5 black cops in Memphis have been fired for beating another black man to death.
From what I’ve read, there’s video of the incident to be released, and the predicted outrage may rival the response to George Floyd’s killing. I also saw in an article that Nichols was a skater, so I figured maybe some Memphis heads in here would’ve heard something about it?
Not looking to start any debates, just want to pay respect, wish the best to his loved ones, and hope that justice will be served.

I don't recall ever running into him, but I can tell you that he was loved by many in this city. What happened is fucking tragic and it's cast a dark cloud over the city. I hope that those bastards get what they deserve for murdering an innocent man.
To give context of the scenario from what I've heard/read about it; Tyre was pulled over by an unmarked vehicle and the person who got out was a "plainclothes" cop wearing a hoodie and jeans. In Memphis recently, we've had a group of young teens/young adults posing as law enforcement in the SAME EXACT WAY THESE COPS PERFORMED to carjack people, so his reaction of fleeing from some unknown figure in a hoodie and unmarked vehicle was completely justifiable and I know many other people would have driven off just the same.
I'm glad those pigs got fired and had their names released. They deserve every bit of what's coming to them, but I genuinely hope it doesn't take any uglier turns than what's already occurred.

I found this article searching his name. There’s a photo of him on a skateboard if you scroll down, with some quotes about him being a skater. Looks like he was from Sacramento originally and moved to Memphis within the last few years. He also had a young child.
Law enforcement in the Deep South is fucked. This can happen to anyone at anytime if the cops think you’re giving them lip, or even look at them the wrong way. So much shit like this has been covered up over the years; thank god for body cams. I hope these motherfuckers fry for this

Yeah it’s sad, this is one reason as a Black skateboarder I don’t feel comfortable street skating alone usually. Because if the cops show up, there’s a higher chance of me getting fucked up than my white peers.
The crazy thing about this one is I think the cops were Black too. Which goes to show that all of them truly are bastards.
-
RIP to this young man. I didn’t know him but I absolutely feel for his family and I hope the people involved receive the the full weight and penalty of the law.

He was running from a traffic stop, I think they tend to fuck everyone up who does that, regardless of skin color.
They beat him to the ground non-stop for three straight minutes when he was in no condition to fight back. Don't do this.

Fuck this apologist bullshit. Even if the police beat up everyone who ran from them, which they absolutely don't, it would still be a heinous abuse of power. They are NOT supposed to be judge, jury and executioner. ACAB.
RIP Tyre. I'm heartbroken.
-
Sorry, not how I meant it. I was just saying since the article linked says nothing of the incident, that the guy wasn’t street skating. Obviously I don’t think that people should be beaten to death for running from the cops.
-
We are all heartbroken over this down here. It's tragic when anyone is murdered by the police, but it just hits so much harder because he was a part of our community.
Pals, if any of you has the time and willingness to drive to Memphis; we are having a candlelit vigil for Tyre at our local skatepark named Frank Tobey Park at 7pm this evening. Please show up and show love if you can.

Thoughts going out to his family. A GoFundMe has been set up for Tyre
Consider donating if you're able: https://www.gofundme.com/f/official-tyre-nichols
All of the donations will go directly to the family to support them, especially with most of the family having to fly cross country to be present to fight for their brother, all donations are appreciated more than I can ever explain. Thank you again for standing with us during this dark time. The people that have supported us are the only reason we were able to find the justice for Tyre that we have. The fight continues on. “My knees gave out,” she told WMC. “I just fell because I could not believe that someone with such light was taken out in such a dark way.”
This fucked with me. It’s insane how this is still happening, a gold boy scout badge shouldn’t give you the green light to beat the life out of someone just cause they run from you. I’m not saying just because you’re a black cop that absolves you of being a bully piece of shit but you’d think with all the media attention and awareness that’s been raised over the past decade about cops unjustly murdering black people these dumbasses would have some sense to maybe not unleash an assault (murder) that goes on for minutes.

I was just thinking about this song when I saw the thread.
What bothers me the most is that those 5 cops will just end up being re-hired by another PD. Memphis PD only fired them to appease the public who are putting pressure on them. They aren't doing it because they actually care about the harm that these pigs are causing. I feel so bad for the family. I can only imagine what they are going through right now.

This situation seems fucked, I was just trying point out that the guy was not skateboarding, not excusing beating a guy to death you maniacs. Condolences to his family, and I hope they get justice.

Strange that the mods would move the discussion of the murder of a black skater by police to the "Whatever" section of the discussion board but would keep the thread discussing the death of Jake Phelps under useless wooden toys. Neither death was caused by skating and yet.... Also, shouldn't there be a trigger warning in the title of the Jake Phelps thread for those whose loved ones have died due to opiates? That is, if the moderation approach is meant to be applied equally. My comments aren't meant as a criticism of the mods, I know they have a difficult job, I just found it odd.

This isn't meant as a criticism but what you seem to be saying is that essentially it's a no win situation. Protesting and advocacy haven't worked in a lasting way and violent direct action would likely end up in more people fighting right wing fascist being killed than the right wingers. Not tryna hear that copaganda about the "good cops". If you have 10 cops, and only 2 of them are bad, and the other 8 don't say anything about the 2 bad ones, then you have 10 bad cops.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with speaking emotionally. After all, a man was murdered. It is important to remember that this is not a logic problem, and being emotional is a valid response. Again, I do not know what action the masses should take, but I do not see protesting and advocacy as viable way forward, if it ever was. Obviously, law enforcement does not care. They beat this man to death on camera and did not think twice about it.

if someone (maybe a corporation, government, neighbour) says you aren’t allowed to sit on a bench for whatever reason, if sit there and stay there long enough, the police will be called.
they will ask you to leave. sure they might ask nicely, but eventually they’ll start to get threatening and become aggressive. and if you still sit there, they’ll eventually beat the shit out of you and force you to move. and they have the right to exert that force on you and you don’t have the right to that force on them.
that is a monopoly of violence. the idea of police brings up the image of brutality. that’s why ACAB. it doesnt matter if there are good ones. the fact that they’re are bad ones to begin with and the system allows them to act freely without worry of real consequences is why ACAB

This shit is just heart breaking . Skater or not he was just an innocent person . Our system is broken , this country is broken and reality is we’re not on a path to fix it. Get out while you can…… I can’t even imagine the political and social repressions of this, having 5 black cops murder another black man? But this also being the first time like ever that cops are actuallly charged with a crime? Yeah this is gonna be a rough one.
RIP TYRE NICHOLS: SKATEBOARDER. I think we can all say you’ll be in every one of our pushes from here on out , rest easy friend .

It‘s not that simple, but yeah: ACAB. You have to be an asshole to want to be a cop in America.

Saw the video and it was even more disturbing and horrifying than I was prepared for. All cops truly are bastards as the system is beyond broken.
Rest in peace Tyre and power to his family and friends.

Fuck that video. I hope they get the chair fucking scumbags.

So sad :(
RIP Tyre!
Condolences to the family and friends!
I wish these bastards get some really hard time for their actions and there are no more fucked up stories like this! Fuck 12!

heard a rumor that tyre had sex w/ one of the cops' wives and that's why it was personal [not everyone gets beat up or beat up that bad]. i don't know if it was a flippant comment or the cops had history w/ the kid or what.
did anyone protest/riot last night?
Who cares if he did. But if that's the case it's premeditated so even more reason to strap them to a chair.
Saw pics on social media (mine I live overseas) of cop cars burning so hopefully.

rest in power
this might be an unpopular opinion, but i am so fucking sick and tired of peacefully protesting.
these people won't listen or care. the only way to enact change is to shake the boat a bit. go out there and show these pigs how angry you are
the police are largely right-wingers who can’t wait for an open invitation to cave your head in, which is what you are suggesting
This isn't meant as a criticism but what you seem to be saying is that essentially it's a no win situation. Protesting and advocacy haven't worked in a lasting way and violent direct action would likely end up in more people fighting right wing fascist being killed than the right wingers. I don't know what the solution is but something must change. Or, perhaps not and we just resign ourselves to the violent and corrupt whims of law enforcement and learn to live with it. Again, I just don't know.
We know what the solution is, but saying it out loud gets you put on a watch list.
J/k the solution is to vote Democrat. Biden 2024!

showing out for white cops should be punishable by death

From watching the videos last night it really did seem like this was personal and not some random encounter. It would explain why he would have bolted away so quick at the traffic stop. Even the way he's pleading to the officers, it's screaming mercy. Like okay I get it, I did what I did, now can you stop it.

that's all i was getting at. i saw another post saying that 'defund' [and also vaccine mandates] led to retirements has left a paucity of skilled experienced cops so they're recruiting subpar candidates and in this case, members of the vicelords.
sounds farfetched to me but there have been bloods on the LAPD, it's not unfathomable for a gangsta to make it to an age w/out a felony even if it is rare.
if i had to guess, the cheating wife seems more plausible or previous encounters of some kinds so they have a grudge.
There isn't a single PD in the country that's been defunded, cops are just violent power trippers

Cops themselves are a fucking gang, they just have the backing of the most powerful union in the country and they have an entire judicial system that protects them as long as they say the magic words "i was in fear for my life"
Not to mention the actual subgroup gangs that exist in the LA sheriffs department like the executioners, 3000 boys, Vikings, cavemen, regulators and cowboys. As of right now there are 18 known deputy gangs that exist within the LASD. It has nothing to do with being "gangsta" and everything to do with having a violent, militaristic, racist group with zero accountability and a license to kill with impunity.

All aspects of the "Defund" defense are complete canards, without a single shred of truth in them. Many police did retire after 2020, when it seemed like there might be accountability for police violence (lmao), and recruitment numbers are way down since everyone hates the fucking police and the job market is relatively strong.
The police are a gang, they don't need to pull from members of the Bloods in order to behave like gangsters. The LA Sheriff's department has been engulfed in a multi-year scandal about competing internal gangs (https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/06/06/the-la-county-sheriffs-deputy-gang-crisis), ones where you earn your place (and a tattoo) by killing civilians. Frankly I trust a street level gangster much more than I trust in the police, and the implication of your post is that someone who would join a street gang is inherently untrustworthy or not deserving of a position within civil society, which is an idea I dismiss out of hand.

Just read the wikipedia article on this and I'm feeling sick.
Can someone explain this to me(european)?
"As of January 27, all five men have posted bail and been released, according to Shelby County Jail records."
How are these people allowed to walk freely? You can murder someone, pay the bail and just go home (for some time)?

I have not stopped crying since last night. I cannot put into words how enraged and hurt I felt seeing that video. I keep thinking about how I wish had met him and become his friend here. I keep thinking about how he was one of us. I cannot stop hearing his crying out for his mother. I cannot keep myself from thinking about how these fucking pigs stood over him, bragging about murdering a human in the most brutal way imaginable like they did something worth fucking commending.

In America we have different types of criminal justice systems.
If you're rich, have political connections, or are a cop you get treated one way.
Everyone else gets the second system.
No joke, I've read about really bizarre sentenencing, like a former NFL cheerleader got weekends in jail for having sex with an underage kid.

Sickening.. I couldn't watch that video.
I can not imagine to live and raise my family in a country where I have to have fear to get murdered on a "traffic stop" from the guys that should protect me from exactly that. Don't get me wrong, it's not all happy where I'm from eather but stuff like this is basically unimaginable here..
Holy shit.. Stay safe guys. Rip Tyre.

A lot of, if not all inequalities in this country have been simmering below the surface, and are coming to a head. People are tired of being abused financially and physically under the thumb of an unjust system. Cops are brutal enough as is. I’ve seen teenage friends clubbed for running away during high school party bust ups. I couldn’t even imagine adding a darker skin color to the equation, and the targeted violence that results from just existing as you are.
Sure, In this instance the pigs were black too, but it doesn’t change the fact that white nationalists have infiltrated law enforcement agencies in staggering numbers. Look no further than the difference between January 6th protestor treatment, vs BLM protestor treatment. This shit needs to stop, and I don’t care at what extreme cost it takes for us all to exist on a level playing field.
I hope those protesting in major cities do exactly as they see fit to fight for the right not to be abused, maimed or killed to satiate some sadistic power hungry fuck’s thirst for violence.

Does your country have a bail system? I just assumed most European countries had a similar justice system (based on the doctrine of presumption of innocence). The bail for murder is way more, but I'm sure their police union has some sort of provision for covering that.
-
Not tryna hear that copaganda about the "good cops". If you have 10 cops, and only 2 of them are bad, and the other 8 don't say anything about the 2 bad ones, then you have 10 bad cops.
American police culture enables stuff like this to happen again and again.
Agreed. I'm just a guy, and I don't know exactly what] steps and things need to be done, but I know damn well that something has to change. If nothing changes, nothing changes, and this shit keeps fucking happening.
It might be helpful if more people knew what happened behind the scenes, at the very least, it certainly cant hurt.
This episode of Behind the Bastards is an (at times) entertaining resource and informative tool as to why all cops are bastards even if some didn't start out that way:
https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-behind-the-bastards-29236323/episode/the-man-who-teaches-our-cops-63257870/
While I'm here, fuck iheart too, but BTB did a multiple part series entitled Behind the Police that also great and I think a few episodes on why police unions are the worst fucking things ever.
I have been re-listening to BTB while putzing around the house sick as a dog (not covid!) and just caught up to their 2020 episodes sooooo it's pretty fresh in my head.
Hope that wasn't too much of a derail and someone finds it helpful.
Stay safe anyone in the streets out there.

bail systems are pretty common. but in many countries for stuff like (second degree) murder there will be no bail or it will be hard to get. i.e. in germany you can get bail approved by a judge, but if you are a murder suspect, that's highly unlikely, as some judge has to allow it first. and they usually don't with crimes this severe unless there is little to no ground to hold the suspect for longer. so getting bail granted usually means they are pretty sure you're not the one.

Guys, let's be brutally honest. Protesting isn't going to do shit. Do something more proactive. Vote, go to city council meetings, talk to your representatives in person (yes you can do that), volunteer, etc.

people have been trying all of the above for generations. its going to take a new level of all of the above, some creative approaches to protest and a demand to re-think policing from the ground up.
After watching the video a few times, at first it seemed like the cops did not think they were doing anything wrong. now i am wondering if some of the language and how they used it indicates a pre-meditated attack? "show me you hands" and "put your hands behind your back" while clearly not allowing him to do so. then in the chit chat afterwards, knowing they are being recorded, saying "he reached for so and sos gun." i didn't see any way he could have done reached for anyone's gun with five cops pounding the shit out of him. that arrest attempt was looked so awkward with the cops foundering, injuring themselves and spraying each other with pepper spray while pretending to be unable to subdue Tyre. it just didn't look legit. five big dudes like that could have apprehend him and arrested him way more efficiently and safely if they'd wanted to. i don't think they wanted to (obvious as that sounds)
I now think they knew very well what they were doing and that their language and behavior during and after was very intentional and intended to make it look like he was violent thug, "high as mother fucker." this reeks of something really fucking sinister and pre-meditated. I wonder if the details leading up to this will ever come to light?

To be honest I’m not sure what the point of protesting right now is. I mean, the bad cops were arrested super fast and charged with real crimes. That’s why we were all in the streets in 2020, to get accountability.
I know it shouldn’t have happened in the first place and training is obviously bad there, but I think long prison sentences will have more of a deterrent effect than a protest. I guess it’s good to let people know we’re still paying attention. I dunno, not sure what the best plan is here do feel free to ignore.

Like most things there is an economic issue here. People who get bachelors degrees in criminal justice and are top tier candidates get police jobs in the suburbs for higher pay. Many major cities only require a high school degree and enrollment in police academies. You have either candidates who can’t get s better job or ones who are bullies and want to be close to the “action”. Obviously more to it than this. We also can’t arm police officers like combat soldiers and then be surprised when they find enemies. Such a sad story.

I have an in law whos a cop who choses to have the whole "you guys wouldn't understand so I will just stay out of these discussions" attitude and I hate him for it more than if he would just be honest in defending his shitty colleagues. Brutality and abuse of power is expected at this point from police. The sad part isn't that, its the continued inaction and silence from those who still want to be seen as "a good one." Shit like this shouldn't be solely on the rest of us to call out.

If anyone wants to run for local office, I'll donate 100 bucks to almost anyone from SLAP. If Mikey Taylor's dumbass can do it, literally anyone can.
Better yet, I imagine most of our partners or spouses would be better candidates than us, so I'll donate to almost anyone's spouse as well.
(I wanted to run for local office prior to my divorce and I wish I would have know there was this org trying to help left leaning candidates get into office.)

This right here disproves the idea that an individual can come into the police force and affect change from the inside. I can't believe that there are still people who believe this.

I recall a similar kind of rumor going around shortly after the George Floyd situation went down that Derek Chauvin had multiple run-ins Floyd prior to everything going down. Can't recall if there was ever evidence presented to substantiate those claims. I watched the Derek Chauvin trial all the way through and don't remember if this ever came up or not.

We don't need cops. Those bastards perpetuate violence in the community and try to make slaves of us though fear.
First time I went to jail I was innocent. The cops beat me in my mother's living room for over a half hour while I tried to follow their commands but they was holding my arms in and screaming give me your hands. My gf was watching and everything.
No warrant no nothing.
I lost. The system sucks. Fuck lawyer fuck das fuck the cops.
My heart goes out to his friends family and community. Shit has to stop yesterday.

I donated to the GoFundMe me (and saw a legendary skater did too which was great to see) but I hope some companies do limited-edition stuff with the families permission with proceeds going to them.
Five hanging pigs in the style of the Klansman please Jim T. if your reading this.
Edit: in the style of the hanging Klansman deck, i think Natas did the original graffic. Of course this pigs aren't kkk but they should swing from a tree branch by thier necks.
We’re really advocating for having 5 black men hanging from branches? Yeah, no. Hard disagree.
I see your point, I didn't know or care their color of
Skin. Pigs are pigs, but yes I can see how that could be interpreted the wrong way.
I read something about now there is seven pigs involved, some stoop back and watched? Anyone got a reputable news site for America? Or can post links. Ta

Gonna need more than an Instagram post for this claim.
How about some YouTube comments?
Stop posting this dumb shit people. If you can't see through it then you're not bright, it's pretty simple.

Rick Thorne and I have been riding, traveling and doing demos together for over 20 years. It’s been a wild journey from doing jump-ramp shows at the Michigan State Fair to packed arenas at Boom Boom Huckjam tours. And we continue to ride together as much as possible well into our twilight days. As a tribute to our tenacity, we are offering this signed photo of us doing doubles just before the world turned upside down (and before I got hurt).
My proceeds from these sales will go directly to the Tyre Nichols Memorial Fund, which includes plans to build a public skatepark in Tyre’s honor; as our worlds continue to grieve his loss. He was a talented skater, among many other admirable traits. And we hope to keep his legacy alive by helping to create a free, inclusive skatepark in his name. Link in bio.

I remember after G Floyd feeling that there was momentum and maybe some hope for change. My wife wasn't having it. "How many times have we been here" What has changed?" And, of course she's right and I hate that this is the smart take...hopeless cynicism.
I watch that young man skate and it just crushes me knowing what became of his last moments and how this shapes my view of our society even further. I don't really have a point to make, just venting and thankful for this place.

Skate parade is cool. That should be more the norm for us. I've seen it one other time when a shop owner was murdered during a robbery (who robs a skateshop?).

Turns out the rumors about the cops texting photos of a beaten and bloodied Tyre Nichols were true. Sickening. This from the New York Times. "As Tyre Nichols sat propped against a police car, bloodied, dazed and handcuffed after being beaten by a group of Memphis police officers, one of those officers took a picture of him and sent it to at least five people, the Memphis Police Department said in documents released by the state on Tuesday."

RIP Tyre
I was able to make it out to Sacramento for a memorial for him at Sac Ramp. It was emotional.
A group was holding and passing out newspapers with the title "BEATEN TO DEATH", there were shirts made in his honor, skaters and family talking about the good times with him, and a rapper dropping solid lyrics about police brutality.

My cousin was a cop in Sac for a couple of years till he got out cause he had kids. But he used to show me some body came stuff from some of his pursuits and even others which wasn't incriminating but more or less something to show from a night out. I think cops oddly do this all the time. I guess it is hard not to when you have a phone in hand and think no one is going to see it but you and your social circle.

I understand that taking photos may be commonplace. However, I think most people would agree, if you can't control yourself not to take photos of people when you are at work and those who you are dealing with are often at their lowest and most vulnerable you shouldn't be a cop. I know that's not the reality but my point is that it is problem with policing and the quality of officers and none of us should except the current state of affairs. It doesn't matter how common bad behavior is, shit is unacceptable.

I work in a healthcare adjacent setting and would 100% be fearful of losing my job if I ever thought of doing something similar. They so comfortable breaking the law it’s sickening.

This is just so sad. He seemed like a very good person and had really good style on a board from the videos being released. Being from Northern Europe where the police still sometimes can be overreacting and violent but not on any way on the scale and level like what happen to Tyre and other similar cases in the US.
Is police brutality worse now or is it just being highlighted more due to everyone having a camera phone in the US?
I found this statistics from a few years back comparing different countries and the US are far the worst of the countries compared here.
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1124039/police-killings-rate-selected-countries/
I do believe that China, countries in the middle east and africa are a lot worse then the US and their data might not be as a accurate like the once you get from Europe, Northern America and Japan.

Man , they are all pigs in the end regardless.
I might this one cop maybe even detective thru a mutual friend and he had all kinda crazy shit on his phone , I’m talking dude w his head blown off type shit. Those ppl and there ego is something else.

Just read the five pigs are on bail...they should be strapped to a fuckin chair.

Yea, that's fucking insane tbh (whole situation is). But to be so brazen about this act after committing it is another level of heinous.
Why create more evidence of your wrongdoing?
Probably because they don't even consider it wrong.
So sad.

I lived in Memphis from ages 14 - 17 and I can tell you that the police in Memphis are the worst and most crooked cops I ever had to deal with. I had an incident happen when I was 16 or 17 that was one of the most fucked up things that ever happened to me. Me and a homie got up on this flat rooftop of what we thought was a closed down business and we were skating up there and smoking a little. We leave after about 15 or 20 minutes of hanging out and when we were skating at this gap that was just across the street from the building we were at. We were there for maybe 5 minutes when a black crown Victoria speeds into the parking lot and a cop hoos out and yells "you motherfuckers get over here NOW. Me and my friend split up and take off. The cop chases after ME and finally he catches up to me when Im blocked off by a barbed wire fence, the cop throws me to the ground hard and kicks me in the ribs. He demands that I give the name of my friend up and tell him where he lives and that if I don't some cocaine would "show up in my Pocket " . I try to convince him I had just met my friend and I pretended to be scared enough for him to believe it. Turns out the "abandoned business" my friend and I were skating was property that the police officer owned and used for storage. Someone he knew saw us skateboarding on the roof and called the officer who came looking for us. He was way to fucking mad for two kids skateboarding on his property. That's how I caught a criminal trespassing charge. Luckily I was a minor so the record went away when I turned 18. If you are going to live in Tennessee move to Nashville or Chattanooga. They are much nicer. Memphis is the toilet bowl of the south.

I believe you but almost sounds like fiction. That sounds like a fucked up place. He is the one that should have been jailed for such behavior and not the other way around. Sorry to hear that.

Tyre Nichols' autopsy reveals brain injuries from blunt force trauma, attorneys say
The attorneys for the family of Tyre Nichols say the medical examiner's official autopsy report shows he died by injuries from blunt force trauma — which they say is "highly consistent" with their independent autopsy conducted in January.
The family of the 29-year-old who died after being beaten by Memphis police officers was briefed on his autopsy results Wednesday, nearly four months after his death.
The Shelby County, Tenn., District Attorney's Office has not yet released results from the autopsy to the public. The DA's office did not respond to NPR's immediate request for comment on the results.
"We know now what we knew then. Tyre Nichols died from blunt force trauma and the manner of death was homicide," attorneys Ben Crump and Antonio Romanucci said in a statement sent to NPR. "The official autopsy report further propels our commitment to seeking justice for this senseless tragedy."
Nichols died on Jan. 10, three days after he was stopped by Memphis police for what they called reckless driving. According to initial police reports, officers said Nichols fled the scene but eventually was taken into custody after two "confrontations" with officers.
Sponsor Message
Nichols had complained of shortness of breath following his arrest and was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Five former Memphis police officers — Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin III, Desmond Mills Jr. and Justin Smith — were terminated by the department at the end of January. Each of the five terminated officers belonged to a team known as the SCORPION unit, which was deactivated soon after Nichols' death.
The five former officers each face several charges, including second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct and official oppression. All five officers have pleaded not guilty.
Like Nichols, all of the dismissed officers facing charges are Black.
The news of Nichols' autopsy results comes in the wake of Nichols' family filing a civil lawsuit against the city of Memphis, its police department and the individual officers involved in his death.
The 139-page lawsuit obtained by NPR describes the fatal beating as a "foreseeable product of the unconstitutional policies, practices, customs and deliberate indifference of the City of Memphis" and its police chief, Cerelyn "C.J." Davis.
The suit does not mention a specific dollar amount being sought by the Nichols family. However, Crump said during a news conference last month that the family is seeking $550 million in damages.
The City of Memphis declined to comment to NPR on the lawsuit when asked last month.

From late March:
The Sacramento City Council unanimously voted Tuesday to rename the Regency Community Skate Park to the Tyre Nichols Skate Park. Nichols, a Sacramento native, was an avid skateboarder and "spent numerous hours of his youth skating and building friendships there," according to the city's commission report.
