Just got word he passed away, one of the best dudes I’ve ever met.
-
Holy shit rip. Crob is gonna be so upset
-
Damn growing up in the early 2000’s he was the shit. Always thought he was gonna go pro after the DC video. RIP.
-
fuck man, that’s terrible. seems to be confirmed, marko from sugar skateboards left a memorial comment on his last instagram post. rest in peace legend. girl should issue him a pro model finally as a memorial board with all profits going to his family.
-
He stomped the shit out of his opening nose grind in the DC video.
And, I've def seen this a few times:

Damn, RIP. I was first introduced to him in Yeah Right! Great style and trick selection. This last Nine Club Experience is going to be a bummer

I always wish his part had the lyrics in his Yeah Reah part. So many damn people dying this year and we’re not even in April.

-
Holy shit. RIP in peace. He had the best nollies. Condolences to all of his family and friends.
-
Rest In Peace. Fantastic skateboarder and while I never he met him, he always seemed like a great guy. Also seemed like a great cook! As someone from Mexico City, it's always a pleasure to see Americans do tacos al pastor justice

That was shocking opening up SLAP to see this news. I feel like we were talking about his chrome ball interview:
https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=114948.msg3479494#msg3479494
He came across like a real nice guy. Damn shame.
-
Aw wtf! Condolences to his friends and family. Rip Robbie
-
Terrible news!
He was very stylish skateboarder that people still talk about to this day.
Condolences to family and friends.
-
That is terrible news. Condolences to all who knew and loved him. That one nollie flip off a loading dock has been stuck in my mind since I first saw it many many years ago.
-
This is horrible. RIP
Condolences to James Craig and Chris Roberts and everyone I’m tripping here
-
Wtf . Man RIP. Second the girl memorial board.
-
Dude, I’m actually really torn up about this. Skated with him quite a bit at Fullerton High, and the manny pads across the street; during the Society/bLind days. Then the Ponds, then Venice, and then the Courthouse on the weekends. This shit hurts. I’m sorry, Cliff.
-
Condolences to everyone whose lives he touched through skateboarding and life. Never felt like he got his fair dues with the whole DC/Girl deal, the world missed out on more years of smooth operation.
-
One of the best parts in yeah right
RIP
-
RIP. Way too young.
-
Sad news, way to young RIP
-
RIP Bob McCrooks.
His footage was always fun to watch.
-
I saw that someone mentioned something about this last night but I didn’t find anything online about it and was hoping it wasn’t true. This is a bummer. My heart goes out to his friends and family 😞
-
Sad to hear of this. I sat next to him often in class at the art institute and would joke around a lot. He was usually quiet but definitely a fun person and talented.
-
wow, RIP. Terrible to hear. I can't count how many times I re-watched Yeah Right and DC Video growing up. Condolences to his family and friends.
-
Rest in peace. Had that solid, classic style, and great trick selection. When I was a kid, I was always hyped to see his footage. Left an indelible mark on street skating for sure.
-
damn this one actually hurt me. other than dyrdek he was the only skater that i knew of for a long ass time that had the same first name as me, and on top of that he had polish roots. i used to watch his yeah right part a lot when i was younger, hell i still watch it a lot, the last time i watched it was probably like a week ago, and today of course. much love to his family and friends.
-
Rest in peace :(
Condolences to his family, friends and everyone else who knew him personally.
-
damn just saw the unfortunate news :(
his yeah right part is burned in my brain. cool to see he really dove into surfing after skating, must’ve sparked something in him like skating did
RIP
-
Damn what a shame. Yeah Right had such an impact on me growing up and I always loved his part, such feel good skating with that song. RIP Robbie

-
I can't believe it ... way too young
-
RIP Robbie. Condolences to his family, friends and all those he’s touched.
Don’t much much to add other than he was underrated, had a great style and trick selection. It still remember his Yeah Right part pretty well after all these years. When I watched that movie as a young kid, I was all about tech tricks and big spots. Big rails and lots of flip tricks made you a “good skater”. I hadn’t yet learned to appreciate style and trick selection but something about his approach had me interested and I always liked his part.
-
His Nollie back heels and especially the nollie flip down that double set in yeah right are burned into my brain whenever I hear the Talib Kweli song. One of my first transworlds had a girl Canada tour article with that fakie 5-0 he did on the parking lot ledge transfer thing with Ty Evans filming in the frame, such a sick photo. Rest In Peace Robbie McKinley

-
Damn i remember a long time a go like in 2000-2001 I saw him and Daniel Haney at this local skatepark Pedlow in the San Fernando Valley. He was so nice and took photos with me. Loved his DC and Yeah Right part. RIP
-
Terribly underrated deeply appreciated by everybody.
Rest in peace.
-
no way... I'm shook. Hes always been one of my favorite skateboarders. Rest easy.
-
Damn this one hurts me. I was such a big fan of his skating. His footage in the dc video always had an impact on me. His nollie 180 over the car got me so inspired to do that trick like him. Mad underrated skater. My condolences to his family and friends.
-
Man this fucking sucks. Amazing skateboarder.
I was working in a skate/surf shop a few years back and was chatting with this guy who was looking to buy a surfboard. We had yeah Right playing on the tv and the dude was staring at it, and all of the sudden starts laughing and goes "that's me!". Lo and behold, it was Robbie McKinley himself! Great guy. RIP 🌹
-
Sad news, gone way too soon. All the love to you Robbie.
-
Rip. Love his floaty nollie 360 over the trash can in yeah right.

Got to hang out with Robbie a few time and he was one of the nicest dudes i met met in California. Saw him move to Hawaiï later on and he seemed to be doing good over there, surfing and whatnot .This is awful. Rest in peace Robbie.

Original music on VHS Yeah Right was way better than the DVD version.
Super sad to see these pinned RIP posts growing.

Great story, thanks all for sharing the interactions with him.
It's heartwarming to know he only had 2 video parts almost 20 years ago, never went pro and yet he's still remembered fondly. Speaks volumes of his skating and his character.
Any news on how he passed?
-
his line in yeah right with the nollie nosegrind on the first ledge and bs noseblunt on the second. For me the most stylish nollie nosegrind ive ever seen. rip robbie mckinley
-
I’m so fucking sad now. My heart can only take so much you know. I’m still reeling and finally moving forward then this. Those closest to him my condolences. Sincere and raw. That was his style to me. No fakes. Just heartfelt fun.
-
I wish Alien or Habitat would have given this guy a sponsorship, that would have been cool
-
Always wished you would have continued your career and showed us a bit more of your style and talent. Rest easy.
-
It's heartwarming to know he only had 2 video parts almost 20 years ago
One of those guys that had more footage than you might recall, just wasn't in full part form. Tim Dowling's 'Listen', Round 1 Blind section, Chocolate Tour, always a strong presence in 411. I am sure there's some I am not thinking of.
-
First time I saw him skate I knew he had “it”. There was something about the way he approached things. Powerful with finesse, if that makes any sense. Every time I saw him I’d be amazed. You could watch him and learn tricks just by how proper he did everything. This shit really hurts.
-
RIP. He was one of those guys who was friends with everyone and he didn’t really have to be.
-
Great trick selection and style... another one gone way too soon. RIP Robbie
-
So sad :(
Condolences to his family and friends!
Rest in Peace, Robbie!

Damn dude I still think about that nollie back heel he did near the end of Yeah Right where the flashes light up the reflective lights in a row as he lands it. Loved both of his parts. Rest in Peace Robbie

Fuck man, never like seeing one of these threads pop up. Watched his Yeah Right part so much growing up, gonna have to put it on repeat tonight. Hope his family is doing alright, RIP

definitely a big influence growing up, so surprised he never made it to the pro ranks.
RIP fella
-
Absolutely terrible. I was looking at IG and i noticed all my favorite accounts that repost sick skating had Robbie, then i realized it was because he passed. DC vid and Yeah right were heavy rotations on me, always loved his skating.
Also loved his outlook and gratitude for the opportunities skating gave him. Industry owed him a lot more but he always seemed grateful in every interview. RIP man
-
RIP
-
One of my fav styles and bags all time. That’s nollie back heel!
I second the alien/habitat comment, he would have fit perfectly alongside D-Gar!
-
I have a funny story about a time we hung out after a Make-A-Wish event in Houston. It was myself, my friend Fred, Robbie, and Stevie Williams. It was right before Stevie’s shoe was going to drop and Robbie just got on. We were all in the the car flowing DC freestyles haha. Stevie was hyped haha
-
This is so sad, what a great dude. I remember back in the day getting free bearings and a girl board from Robbie! He never cool guyed us annoying kids even after we asked him 10,000 questions about Koston. This really hurts my heart.
RIP Legend

Yeah, I watched the beginning to hear what they'd say, and I so agree with C-Rob about viewing him and Robbie as a duo. Glad to see Kelly bring this up when there were 3 longtime guys on crail and one who is an original Girl rider. I always thought it was weird he never got the bump. I feel Crail will do it if it would help pay for something, help his family or could go to a cause that Robbie cared about.

Super weird he never got a board, especially how many dudes milked it for so long

chris and jeron have talked about it in past episodes saying how he was set up to go pro & he just kind of bailed. they always talked about how they wish he would’ve just stuck around & turned pro, maybe he was just over it.

He explains it in his chromeball interview
-
I don’t remember it being in CBI, but does anyone else know the significance of the barcode at the start of his YH part?
-
I remember back in the day getting to the end of a Thrasher mag and seeing this kid do possibly the biggest road gap switch tre for a Girl ad. I only remembered him from a random Society ad or something before that.
I thought to myself, this dude is the future!!!!!!!! No one had done a switch tre that long before (that I could remember)
I was so ready to buy a Girl board with his name on it. Fuck.
One of the best IG handles too.
Fuxk fuck fuck

I wonder if this is around the time I met him...we both went to art institute and had some basic courses together around 2003-2005. I'm not sure when he enrolled exactly though.
Hopefully Girl does make a board, I'll definitely buy one.

I think 2003 was the turning point when he wouldn’t be out skating much. He’d always be at Venice or the Sand Gaps before that.

What a absolute bummer 😢 RIP Robbie. Thanks for all the memories.
-
Tragic either way but is it just me or were they hinting at suicide on the nine club? With all the talk about checking in each other ect. More needs to be done about this issue.

RIP Robbie. Best Nollie tricks in the game.
Especially loved the super fast long Nollie crook he did in Yeah Right. Condolences to his friends and family.

I don't think so. Who knows what happened. I got the vibe in this case, Chris was talking about someone who was arguably his best friend or one of his closest friends for years, and it seems they drifted apart due to no ill will toward each other just due to how their lives changed from their mid-20's until now. I'm in my mid-30's, and I have people who were very close friends at earlier points in my life who I have no ill will towards and remember the great times we've had, but you can go a year or even a couple years without talking. This is living in the same city, this can be even more exacerbated when someone moves a 4-hour flight away. Earlier this year I actually talked to a couple of them randomly through Instagram and ended up meeting up for drinks and catching up in a couple of cases. Atleast that's the message I took out of it.
If it was, Robbie's family deserves privacy and not speculation.

This just posted. Looks like his family needs support to bring him back from Hawaii. I’m sure any little bit helps.
-
After reading about this, the thing that is most heartbreaking is it looks like he just moved to Hawaii in the last few months to try to start a new life.
Fuck. That sucks no matter the cause of death.
-
Rest in peace...I still watch his Yeah Right Part regularly, such a great short part in one of the best videos.
-
One thing I always liked about this dudes parts is how somewhat relatable they were. Not that I was anywhere near his talent at the time or ever for that matter, he stood out to me because his style of skating seemed more attainable if that makes any sense. It was all mostly basic tricks popped really high, going fast and executed to damn near perfection. Just seemed like stuff that I might could possibly do other flip in/flip out ledge wizardry or jumping down huge gaps or skating buck rails. I loved his parts being mixed in with all the stuff I mentioned above. Kinda brought the videos back down to earth. RIP

Glad the GoFundMe hit its goal asap. Always interesting to see who is helping out with the GoFundMe as well. Nick Tershey giving $500 was pretty cool.

It seems like such a no brainer. Make a board and have all the profits go to his family and people that always wanted a board with his name on it get what they want too. Win win situation if you ask me.

I don't remember them doing that for Gabriel Rodriguez. I'd love a board for both those dudes.

He just moved to Hawaii and had been surfing a bunch so I’ve just been imagining he surfed the biggest wave in history and got carried a way by a nice old whale. I can’t do the whole suicide/overdose anymore . Too many good people gone too soon

Crailtap and Girl can't come up with that money is wild to me...but maybe they do other stuff on the low.
-
Robbie was a friend growing up in West LA, we both skated for Hot Rod skateshop. He already had that smooth style and high speed attack back when he was a Society Dog. It's been a sad week for our little Hot Rod crew because, in retrospect, he was our most talented skater. He didn't really like the pressure of being a sponsored skater, though. He was just so fucking talented that big companies came after him. He was a true California kid who walked away from skating to simply enjoy life and later to surf. People talk about him not going pro...the guy got on Girl, the most elite team maybe ever, and was on his way to getting a shoe on DC for sure. Those are massive accomplishments. I sold him my GMC truck when I moved away to NY at age 18, and 10 years later when I returned to Cali he was still rolling it up and down the coast, surfing a ton with Matt Solomon, who used to manage Hot Rod. Some people are here on this earth simply for the experience — that was Robbie. That thought is comforting, as we all know he enjoyed some great experiences in life, despite leaving Spaceship Earth a little earlier than the rest of us. Peace, Robbie

One of my favorite clips of his is the nosegrind on the Venice bench in his first clip in The Chocolate Tour. So much power and style on an otherwise simple ledge trick.

I do think there should have been more of a tribute of some sort to Gabriel, I mean, the dude was one of the first dudes on Chocolate and ended Chocolate's first video. I think the difference here is, that Keenan died while being an active team rider for Crail. Sort of like how if someone on a sports team dies tragically while on the team generally their number will be permanently retired, but if it happens years after they have retired or been traded they generally get a tribute on the jumbotron.

He was a true California kid who walked away from skating to simply enjoy life and later to surf. People talk about him not going pro...the guy got on Girl, the most elite team maybe ever, and was on his way to getting a shoe on DC for sure. Those are massive accomplishments.
Some people are here on this earth simply for the experience — that was Robbie. That thought is comforting, as we all know he enjoyed some great experiences in life, despite leaving Spaceship Earth a little earlier than the rest of us. Peace, Robbie
beautiful words man, thanks for taking the time to come on here and post

When you assume... ::)
That's a message of thanks FROM Robbie's family, including his cousins Nike and Dom.

Thank you for this. Those switch flip and switch 180 photos are amazing! While I really enjoy photos in general, it's rare than I'm this hyped on them, but Robbie's style translated so well to these. His pop was so nice
