Kind of forgot Volcom existed. What's the deal with them? Are they still popular? I remember tons of kids would rock their stuff in middle and high school

Back in the day I have tons of Volcom stuff. It was a favorite of mine since the THPS days. I really love the socks. Oh and the Volcom hats are pretty great in general.

Back in the day I watched my Chicagof "The Hook" DVD all the time. Still got it. Then the only thing I saw from them after that was that "True To This" one on Netflix which was kinda meh. I actually liked the surfing part the most with that epic song and those huge waves. This new one however looks reeeaaallly fucking good. Their team is sick.

To be fair though, Rowley got hurt during the filming of Propeller and his part was still pretty decent (that tre flip bluntslide down that ditch was amazing) I bet he would've had the best part along with AVE if he was healthy.

I've grown to like Skateline a lot, but I don't think Gary hosting things or interviewing people are what he's good at. He's too much of an actual skate rat where he ends up just fanning out on a lot of pros, which is what I do when I've run into big names, but it makes them uncomfortable a lot of the time. It's kind of crazy how he's became a known name in the skate industry though. I can always appreciate him taking digs at Nike in episodes.

I saw CT post something about 'free tickets' a while back but you could be right. Either way I don't have it in me to stand in line and not be able to get in. That theater is fairly small for the amount of people they're expecting.

Went to the premiere last night
1- Louie had a two song opening part which got the ball going really quick. Best part he had put out, and easily in my top ten of all time. I remember him tre-flip lip that New Mexico ditch spot that is a downhill hubba/ledge into a steep bank. That was nuts. Forgot what the ender was, his part just kinda stopped.
2- Dennis footy was below par in my opinion. He only had a few clips, maybe 10 clips? He was just cruising in the montage section. Enjoyable nonetheless.
3- Dustin Dollin's part was entirely slams. He didn't land one trick. They edit it for comedy which was pretty funny. After "he hits his head" he goes into a dreamlike state where his contracts are being terminated, scooter kids kicking him, and his leg had to be amputated. His slams were fucked up bad. I don't know how he didn't get injured for life.
4- Jackson Pilz footy is incredible, he shared a part with Axel Cruysberghs. Jackson's feeble looked too easy. That kickflip over the fence is his ender and is straight jacked. Axel's part was gnarly, but kinda forgettable, unfortunately.
5- Milton Martinez had a sick part, he had some insane street footy paired with gnarly tranny stuff.
6- Alec Majerus part is fucked up. One of the best in the video IMO. Kickflip crook this spot (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/dFQ_TnyRlqk/maxresdefault.jpg) and kickflip back tail that ocean side hubba that rowan barley grinded which was his ender.
7- Daan Van der Linden's part reminded me why I love skateboarding. Carefree style and attitude that was coupled with dork tricks magnified to extreme levels. He heelflip indys that Atlanta 4 Block spot. Everything was done so perfectly. Grinds a stupid long rail to the point where I laughed. That backsmith stall in the photo on the other page is insane. He ollies outta it perfectly into the tranny. Ender is the backnoseblunt. Volcom likes to ruin it, huh?
8- Dane Burman's part was sick, more drops than anyone else. Kinda forgettable among the madness of the video. That kinda happened alot. You would forget who just skated because there was so much going on. Alot to take in at once.
9- I don't know who Jordan Trahan is but his part was honestly the least impressive. Who is this guy, I thought he was like the filmer at first. lol
10- Chris Pfanner does the same tricks, but does them bigger, better, and faster. Nothing notable.
11- Grant Taylor and Collin Provost share the ending part of the video. They skated to a gothic heavy metal track that fit so perfectly. Dudes shredded the fuck out of the tranny. But GT got down on some big ass rails. Really surprised me actually. Was not Collin's best part, still liked it. At this point it was hard to remember what anyone did because there was so much shit to watch.

Overall, this video was sick. Soundtrack was rad and fit everyone perfecty. Alot of the spot I have never seen before. Alot of drone shots, they overkilled it. 4K was awesome, and the filming was really well done. Alot of effects, and very theatrical - this entertained my girlfriend more than a homie video. Daveed got injured so he didn't have much footy other than pool tricks in montages. Overall it was pretty sick. The re-watchablity is so much higher than Pretty Sweet.

To be fair, Trahan's footage was fairly tame for what he's capable of, which could be why Minty didn't notice. Did have a no comply kickflip up like a 5, which was probably his stand out trick. Minty - seriously check out his other shit and you'll change your mind.
Milton Martinez, Louie, Daan, and Alec really had the stand out parts to me. All really sick, especially Daan, kid is insane. The rest of the video was well done though. Volcom has a sick team and glad to see them actually making a video.
People in the crowd audibly laughed when Sheckler came on too, which I found pretty funny at my premiere.

I went to the Jakarta premiere and it was highly lame. Free entry, but the venue doubled their regular drink prices, so it was the opposite of pretty much every premiere I've been to. The sound was shit and seemed like it was edited with a fuckin MS Paint equivalent sound board. Every trick sounded the same, every snap, every land. Happy to write this off until I see it on DVD though.

I hate to be another anonymous shit-talker on slap but goddamn. this one is not great. or even good. and I love Russell Houghton so that's saying something. basically the whole video plays like it's supposed to be on in the background at PacSun. the music isn't terrible. its just sooooo forgettable. like shit no one would possibly listen to before skating. secondly, it's a hour long. there's so many artsy angle/drone shots/establishing shots/scenery type stuff, if you removed it the video would be 40 minutes. everybody kills it, it's just aggressively boring. there is at least 10-15 super slow-mo shots of people boardsliding or lipsliding massive double kink rails that are insane but by the 9th one I'm like ok how bout some regular-mo. the south america section was cool. louie was great. dennis and jordan's stuff felt like throwaway but what do you expect from a volcom video. daan van der linden really stood out. grant taylor/collin's part is last, impressive stuff for sure but really nothing unexpected. the part and the video end so abruptly some people at the premiere were like "that's it?" and my god Dollin. holy fuck Dollin. the slam section he has is fun to watch, I was actually laughing out loud at some of his bails, never done that before. you already know there's no landed tricks. but after the "part", there's this crazy confusing cheesey little skit where Dustin is hit by a car, then beat up by scooter kids (really?), then he's in Hell and is slowly lowered into a thing of lava. fades to black. skate video starts again. no explanation for this 3 minute long nightmare sketch. it was such a jarring intermission and then it's back to super slow-mo artsy montages again. this shit is audiovisual melatonin.

For Jordan and Busenitz part, Jordan has been hurt pretty much the entire time he's been on the team so it was hard to get alot of footage with him. And with Busenitz, adidas seriously put him on EVERY SINGLE trip so getting footage of him was also super difficult, we basically had maybe a week in NYC with him to film.
In regards to the indo premieres or any of the others, we apologize for any mishaps, things like drink prices, board checks, capacity issues, security... that's more or less all because of our contractual agreements with the venues. I was also at the NYC and Austin premieres and the aspect ratio was off so if heads were cut off and what not that was also the fault of the theater.
Music is also expensive so we had to work with what we could afford, we don't have that adidas money where we can afford James Brown, Bowie and Snoop.
As far as Dustin's part goes, he seriously tried and coming off filming for Propeller, his body was fucked and he kept getting hurt. the peewee herman nightmare skit was actually Dustin's idea.

haha thanks dudes, really just a skateboarder like all of y'all, been lurkin in these forums for a while as a fan. I figured I happen to be in the position to set things straight as much i can so why not. Going to stay away from the subjective comments because everyone is entitled to their own opinions (shit, even i thought they had 1 too many boardslides and slo-mo's in there but that's just me) and am not going to try and defend every aspect of the video.
As far as giving the video away for free, we'll probably be doing that later on, I mean we put Lets Live on youtube and I remember getting that on DVD before I even left college. From a marketing standpoint, we know the video will get pirated, we know if you want to see it you will by any means. We have lawyers in house to take it down if it did leak but it's not like we will be chasing anyone who gets it illegally.
In the grand scheme of things I think the format and model of a skate video isn't necessarily dead but it has definitely changed from what it used to be and for the people who are used to that model it's hard to let it go or even understand. We know we're not going to make back the insane amount of money we put into the video solely on video sales, those days are long gone, but for the higher up suits in our company, putting that much money into a video and not even trying to sell it would be even more insane from a business standpoint. To them if you're going to spend $40-$50 on a Supreme t shirt, then why all the fuss over an hour long video showcasing some of the best skateboarders for $10?? It's also part of a larger conversation within the skate community, there so much content out there daily that to even put the time, money and effort into making a skate video these days seems pointless, but we still did. I remember waiting for videos to come out, the anticipation and appreciation for when it actually did, but now it seems every video put out is forgotten months after. We're not giving it away for free just yet just to attach some form of value to it and gauge excitement. eventually the entire video will be free, it will be on thrasher in sections and a 24 hour live stream is slated for the coming months but as of right now find 5 homies, all pitch in $2 and enjoy.
Speaking for the skate dept here, we didn't make this video for the ROI, we made it to make a statement. This is our team, we're on the road just as much, if not more then any other skate team, we're skateboarders just like everyone else and this is a proper representation of our team. We know we have the orange county/socal surf company stigma and trust me the skate dudes in the company hate it cause it's really not who we are.

I remember going to the ASR tradeshows in the late 90s to mid 2000s and the Volcom booth was always this weird cliquey surfer/frat party. One year there was a Flintstones style theme and they had over 20 people working their booth complete with a keg and DJ. It felt like a bad 80s movie.

Caswell has some pretty sick tricks actually, not too much footage, but the stuff he does have is solid.
It was hard for me to watch this video, I feel like HD is meant for slow scenic filming, you can see the most minute details of the scenery, from the scratches on rails to the brown leaf falling off the tree in the background - which is awesome - but when there is sooo much detail happening in a single shot, when my eyes try to focus primarily on the fast moving skater it creates a pretty heavy strain on my eyes, and ends up giving me a heavy eye ache. One shot that stood out as a perfect use of HD was Louie Lopez's bs tail on that ditch bump to bar, it was filmed at sunset, the camera was a still shot, and the clip was in slow mo, it had the perfect contrast for my eyes to fully grasp the actual skating, I think HD is good for that kind of clip, maybe one or two shots here and there, but other then that its just too much for my poor little eyes to process.

I personally thought there should have been more lines too, Those RED cameras are like 30 lbs so it made it kind of difficult but it was mainly because of the spots we hit too. we were traveling around the country following the Wild In The Parks crew for the bulk of it and alot of the spots were one trick spots. there will be raw edits too that will probably have more lines.

It's really not that bad that people make it seemed to be. Like the drone shots are just for showing the places they visited. People made it seemed that they were filming tricks with drones, which that only happened like twice. Only slow mo i noticed that went a little overboard was Alec's part. Which is understanding because he just put out a full part in Away Days, so it seemed like they were trying to get the most out of his tricks. There was also probably 10 minutes of Grant footage throughout the whole video. I wished they just used all that footage for his own part instead of sharing it with Collin. Also Daan is already a legend after this video. Still its a pretty good video and it will probably be on repeat for a little

I bought it on iTunes, and it was pretty sick.
It's definitely a different animal than say, GX1000, but it's still good. Someone commented about it being on TVs in the background at Pac-Sun, that will definitely happen. But that's also one of their target markets, is anyone surprised?
But, the skating is incredible, the filming is similar to Pretty Sweet/We Are Blood/whatever, but I enjoyed it.
Milton, Kwalks, Pedro, Alec, Daan, GT were amazing, tons of other good dudes too. Also hyped on Caswell!
Oh and the Dollin skit. I thought it was great. It reminded me exactly of some Pee Wee Herman shit, or the dream sequence from Big Lebowski.

my first job was at a volcom store. it was a pretty rad experience. would just play lets live on loop on the tv. their chino pants/shorts are amazing. their denim was mad durable as well. bout to happily purchase. $10 is totally worth Louie, GT, Daan... might even have to cop some pants again too.

You need to put these in the iTunes version as extras like Vans did with Propeller. Those raw files are the stuff I usually end up liking more, and I'd rather have them on my computer than go hunt for them on YouTube. Still not sure if I should buy this or not as the reviews are so mixed, but I'm leaning towards nah without the raw edits included.

The only thing that saved this video from being an actual pile of shit was Daan and GT/Spider's parts. I bought it on itunes and just finished it, but I honestly skipped thru over half the video, due to a bunch of uninteresting skaters that I couldn't care less about, and way too many slow mo montages that were drug out entirely too long. I was really bummed that Axel Cruysberghs didn't have a full part, but I really like the way that dude skates. There is no doubt in my mind that Daan will go pro within a year. Some of the tricks he pulled were absolute insanity. The F/S Wallride and the Hippy Jump thru the rail of that big stair set were the most memorable tricks throughout the video. I was looking forward to a Ben Raemers part, but go figure he only had maybe 6 or 7 tricks and shared a part with like 3 people. But he did arguably the longest backside boardslide in the history of skateboarding. Overall I wouldn't advise anyone to spend their hard earned money on this video, just wait until a web rip or a torrent becomes available.

The video was packed full of amazing skating and videography. Sure I'll probably only watch a select few parts again but I cant believe you can complain about paying a measly $10 for a video with such good production and skating like this. Louie Lopez was my favorite part, songs were perfect and he has soo many good tricks. Daan Van Der Linden was another favorite, you just have to see his part to understand. I liked the South America section and Milton Martinez is FUCKING GNARLY. Alec's part was awesome as well, I liked this much more than his Adidas part.
Buy the video, download it, steal it, whatever.. It's a rad video so just enjoy it.

As far as being a surfing company, we actually launched the brand with skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding from the start. We just happened to catch more traction in the surf and snow worlds, which is why people think we started as a surf company. Remy Stratton has been riding for and at the helm of the skate department since the beginning, which is absolutely epic btw, but at that time vert was dead which is why we kinda missed the whole baggy pants and small wheels era. since then we've been building the team to what it is today.
All our videos have been edited by different people and we've always try to do something different.

Beautiful video, it is pleasure to eyes. Colorful, beautiful long lens shots. I can actually see the spot being skated and observe the terrain. And of course guys killing it at the video. Seems that Alec had saved best bits for Volcom.

I liked the video. It's almost an hour's worth of hammers. Watching Pedro, Omar and Grant skate those pools was a thing of beauty. I don't think people realize the gnar factor at some of those spots and those guys were crushing. Omar didn't have a ton of stuff but everything he had was gold. I've always considered him one of the most underrated pros ever. And at 40 he doesn't look like he's slowing down either.
Pfanner was my favorite. Yet another guy that just quietly goes about his business and destroys everything in his path.
Watching Grant skate leaves you wondering what that's like to be that damn good and skate literally anything and everything you decide to on any given day.

Last note...I've never given Alec Majerus much attention but between this and his part in Away Days, holy shit does he rip. If he skated for anyone other than Flip he'd probably get a lot more people's attention.

Daan actually has a good head on his shoulders and he's surrounded by a good crew. Vans helps to take care of him as much as we do and Pfanner and the entire anti-hero crew really help guide him in the right direction.

That's what I've been saying, cut out 2 of the montages so that Grant, Collin, and Axel could have full parts. I also can't believe the Hate Collin is getting, he put out 2 amazing parts within a few months of each other with stay gold and brainwash. Then his MADE part was also amazing. Dude's one of the best out right now. I'm guessing most of the hate was because everyone was looking forward to Grant's part the most and we're bummed he had a shared part.

Milton's 'Over Stokes'! the South America section and his part were my favorite. Much respect to Milton, hard working dude, has a 3 year old and tries to go on every trip possible to support his family and further his career. Between Cons, Red Bull and Creature trips he didn't have a lot of time to film but still came through.

That was fucking gnarly, high octane from start to finish; but I gotta say I was disappointed with the number of dudes who didn't have a ton of footy. I wanted to see more Sheckler, Hassan, Dollin, Raemers, etc. But I guess when your team is that massive it gets kinda hard to squeeze it all into a video. Whatever, Volcom fucking rules

Skating wise I loved it. All the dudes absolutely murdered it. Really energetic and gnarly.
Music could have been a lot better though. Lots of boring "dad music". Having such boring snooze fest music kinda detracted from the skating at times.
I'd really like it, if you could mute the music if you wanted to on the version that's on sale in iTunes. I'd imagine that'd be possible to implement as I think it's possible to have several different language tracks on one movie and this would be technically the same. One language being just raw sounds without music and one with music.
Just an idea for the future, if such a thing is not implemented yet.

Yeah we didn't have that adidas money for music rights and we tried to have the riders pick songs. GT and Collin picked King Diamond and Daan wasn't feeling the song so we changed it like 3 days before it was dude to iTunes. As far as having an itunes version with no music, that would be interesting.
We get that it's an hour long so if you didn't have time to watch it all over the weekend we were letting people who gave us an email to watch it for 5 more days. So if you totally fucking blew it and can't spend $8 on an hour long skate video you can watch it here for 2 more days:

Dude, even if the music wasn't exactly to my taste mostly, it was still tons better than the Adidas video. That fucking sucked. It's not about the hottest pop tracks or the biggest classics. It's all about the vibe. I'm absolutely positive there's tons of brilliant music available for cheap. Just gotta dig deep to find it.
Anyway, that's just my view of the music in the video. I'd definitely buy it from iTunes if you could add a musicless audio track. Considering buying it either way, as the music didn't ruin the vid, it was just boring compared to the skating. :)

Late to the party, but I finally bought this for a recent flight. Holy Shit Holy Stokes! Forget Adidas, Made, or Propeller. As a whole, and even the sum of its parts, this is the best video of the year. Houghten delivers again. He compiled the best angles, and his hi-def drone footy actually enhanced the whole thing rather than detract from it. To date it's the best use of a full 4k skate video, better than what Ty Evans has put together. Favorite part would have to be the South America/Milton Martinez section.
