Deck width and shape poll (End of 2022)
« on: November 18, 2022, 01:51:54 AM »
Vote for all that apply. Rule of thumb, try to keep it to your main "trick" boards rather than cruisers. I tried to include most of the standard shapes and sizes, use your own judgement if the exact number category isn't there for you.

You can vote as many times as you like, and revote... If you technically didn't skate it this year for whatever reason, but know you would have if conditions allowed, then mark it down anyways.

I'm just curious to see where deck preference is at right now, and to have a little time capsule for the future (considering ~20 years ago 7.75 was the common width).

Let me know if I'm missing anything or if you disagree with any of my methodology/categories here.

EDIT: First vote is a >8.75 hopefully I wasn't too conservative in capturing the width zeitgeist by ending it at 8.75, lol.

Are you planning on running some analytics on these? Would like to see how the datapoints correlate across different dimensions like age, region, shoe size, usual terrain, type of obstacles etc (which aren't shown here).

That would be a really cool idea! But outside of the scope of this poll. We would need a polling platform that allows for all of those different attributes to be tied together to a single respondent.

If anyone knows a website that can host something like that and spit the data out into an excel spreadsheet, I might look into doing that at the end of the year.

There definitely isn't enough data about even basic things like deck width correlation with shoe size.

You were. Also shaped decks aren’t necessarily old school at all. I’ve been skating mostly shaped decks lately and none of them have been old school shapes.

But all that said, I really like this. Also what @rocklobster said would be very cool. Risers and wheel sizes and duros and locations and trucks and all. You could go insane with this stuff and get nowhere. There’s a point in keeping it simple also.  :)

Could be fun!

I am solidly in the 8.38 / 8.5 popsicle, 14.5 wb boards, Indy 149s, Classic 56 to Conical Full 54 or so, size 11 - 12 shoes.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

i kinda went like. does it have a fish tail or little to no nose. i'd call it an oldschool shape even if its a new shape like the Snelling deck. but like a lot of Heroin (not the eggs) or Welcome shapes would go in the full shape category for me.

Yeah, I guess these can be categorized in so many ways. I’ve skated the Krooked Dan Drehobl shape and the Antihero Blue Meanie. I wouldn’t call either of them old school shapes even though there might be inspiration there. Also skated Welcome Wicked Queen and Antihero BA/Grosso shape which are way more old school inspired but still very modern. Then I have a Heroin Curb Crusher as my cruiser and while it has some modern attributes (concave, nose has an angle, razor top) I’d classify that as an old school shape as it’s essentially an old fish tail pressed with a modern mold.

We are pretty similar.

Full Shape, 8.38-8.5, 14.25-14.5 WB (not picky about WB tbh), Indy or Ace. Dragon V6 56mm is the perfect wheel for me right now (but 54-56mm conical wheels of some-sort do it for me... not into radially shaped wheels or thin wheels these days).

Good call. That makes a ton of sense, since popsicles seem to end at about 9.0 (at least Anti-Hero Eagles do). Just changed it... might skew the votes a little since some of the current votes would have to be moved.

8.75-9.0 will be slightly under-represented now, and >9 will be slightly over-represented now.

I THINK I initially set up the poll so people could change their response, but its not letting me change my response, so I might have fucked that up. Sorry.

But for future reference they were at:

8.7 - 8.75
    9 (2.8%)
>8.75
    14 (4.3%)

At 68 respondents.

A couple observations already.

I'm shocked by how big the votes are skewing. I figured most people skated 8.25-8.5, but I thought there would be more representation in the 8~8.125 range. I based the ranges on the sizes Tactics was stocking the most of.

I wonder, do other people consider P2 decks to be Full or Shaped decks? I know where I stand, but I'm curious what others think.

full shaped for sure

i put my Dead Dave in the full shape category cause i coulnt see it as an oldschool shape. but now that you changed it to "oldschool or mordern" it shouldve been there. but atleast im still in the right width category now that its changed to 9+. you win some you lose some.

Sorry. I'm mad it's not letting us change votes. My bad on that.

If it's the double shovel one I'm looking at, then I'd say that's a Full. The asymmetrical one I'm seeing though round probably be Shaped I reckon.

@PisstickleTypeExperience What's the kick like on these more like a Tail or nose?

I've grown really accustomed to the round tail-like kicks (quasi twin, foy twin, etc) so much so that I really dislike most noses these days...even ones I used to love skating.

i'm talking about the mutant shape, the asymetrical one. its basicly Dead Dave's own shape wich he gets his graphics on every drop. only 3 times he got a graphic on another shape.

I'm surprised more people don't skate twin tails. I was dying for someone to make those when I was younger... But I think I'm too set in my ways (and afraid of them going away) to get into them now.

Also loving blunted/full nose/tail and I'm not sure if anyone makes a twin tail that is also full like that.

This is really cool and it would be great to add more data to it e.g truck brand and wheel size which obviously also affects wheelbase. Only thing I know of is to create a survey through google that could eventually be exported into a csv or data file. But I am sure there are better options.

Edit: deck width looks pretty normally distributed with peak at 8.5 at first glance.  @FuzzGNU: let me know if you can export the data somehow for some data viz.

I only have a surface understanding of data analytics but clustering would be a great visualization of this data. Based on a parameter (height / shoe size), what is the prototypical skater (deck width / truck / wheelbase).

Fully agree. One would need to carefully plan the survey in advance in order to correlate in a meaningful way afterwards though. Also geographical data would be interesting, i.e. are there regional patterns emerging or even global ones? Getting carried away here lol, appreciate  the effort OP.

Yeah let's all use this thread to try to carefully plan out what would be the most important things to survey. Don't want to put too much burden on the respondents with a huge questionnaire. Gotta find a reasonable amount of the most important data.

Deck width, wheelbase, shape, shoe size, height (maybe inseam make more sense?)... Those seem like the most important.

Maybe age, region, and styles of skating.

I'm curious about age vs. shape for example.

I think those probably seem like the most important without going overboard... But if anyone can think of other ones, let me know.
Skateboarding is the ultimate challenge.

Let's do the only data analysis that matters and plot deck size over dick size

My tech deck and me would be a 1:1
