Is Mob Grip TOO grippy?
« on: April 03, 2017, 04:33:30 AM »
Having my first experience of Mob.
Due to bad timing I had new deck/new shoes synchronicity issues, I put my issues down to the new (but broken in) shoes.
Timing was out for pop, flips were low but supper fast, having early 90's flashbacks.
Raked out old shoes from the holey archive but still had the same issue.
Went through list of other changes, different wood, concave, distance between truck bolts and start of tail, all similar or fractionally out from previous decks.

ITS THE GRIP, ITS TOO DAMN GRIPPY.

It is providing an overly effective source of traction and it's levelling out the deck before my front foot get close to the nose, also playing havoc with my tranny game as can't do the minor foot placement changes required for deckers.

So is this a thread worthy issue, does anyone else out there feel my pain, and is there an answer short of covering the tape in dirt/mud?

You can sand down your grip a little bit. I like Mob but they destroy shoes.

M80 is a ess grippy Mob but I stick with Jessup because it's like textured notebook paper. I don't keep boards long enough for mob to become any less gritty than what's required to sand down an airplane.

good thing there are multiple brands of griptape that allow for one to choose the appropriate level of gripitude

Yeah, Mob was convenience outweighing fastidiousness on my part.

Can't do grip graphics, no matter how lo-fi homie with a spray can  they might be.

Black grip, raw trucks, white wheels. There are not many skate rules I abide by however those are gospel.

Mini Logo has a good grippiness, for me at least.

I just stick with mob, not because it's grippier, but because it's easier to apply and cut. Because it's so stiff and not as flimsy it makes the cutting process easier. The grippiness doesn't bother me too much in the long run, it's only the first sesh or two where the overgrippiness sucks.

After all my life riding Jessup, on my last board I put Mob because it came free with the last board I ordered.

Actually, I really liked the change, it's true that rip the shoes faster but I feel that I have more pop and control especially on transition.

This. The perforations are great as well, never had any air bubbles when using mob.

ive heard mob has numbers on the backing that dictate how grippy it is. 1 is the grippiest, 5 is the least.

I like to ride my boards a long time, so I setup a BBS board with Mob grip. It lasts me about 1.5 to 2 months.

I prefer applying jessup because mob fees like cardboard, but mob stays grippy for a bit longer. I also skate bulky cupsoles which aren't as grippy as some vulcs so I feel a bit safer with mob. Gripthumb is annoying though.

agree with the above comment about Mob being easiest to apply and cut. jessup is a bit trickier to cut. however, I do sand down the edges and a good portion of the middle of the grip with the excess after applying/cutting it. mob is definitely grippy.

Mob m-80 is definitely a little less grippy than regular mob but still too grippy. Jessup isn't grippy enough. I'm a big fan of the grippyness of Paradox but that shit is hard to cut and even harder to find. They kinda fucked their self trying to push all that stupid enhanced balance bull shit.

I skate boards for much longer than I used to, so I like Mob cuz it lasts. I do sand it down a tad bit when I first grip it though.

Always mob, I've tried most other(shake junt, Jessup, black magic, mini logo, off brand China mob, black diamond, and I'm missing one)

But I can always rely on mob, it just does its job the best. Been doing m-80 lately and I like it little more than og mob but that classic mob is Still top stuff.

Mini logo grip is pretty good though for pricepoint, it just gets slippery over time but keeps that friction grip feel. But I would try another sheet definitely.

Jessup has to be the worse grip I've ever had though, tried it like 2-3 months ago and it just didn't have grip anymore after 3 weeks.

I think like brains unless you don't ride your decks long Jessup is ok, if you don't swap decks for a 1-3 months mob is best

old skool jessup and black magic used to be the bomb, these days not so much.
mob does the trick though I wouldn't try and get too techy with your designs, it tears really easily

Yep, I've seen mostly younger guys to do this and it feels so wrong. For me there is no such thing as too grippy griptape, first two sessions with new board are always the best. I like mob, atm I'm skating jessup tho...

With Cupsoles regular Mob is perfect.

With Vulcs M80 is perfect.

Vulc shoes on regular mob is a big no no.

Mob is a vulc shoe devourer.

I think it is definitely too harsh, but I enjoy skating it.

Jessup really is the best out there.

That sums up MOB and it's variants perfectly.

I went strictly m-80 since it released and only bounced around a coupled of times, Jessup was a disaster, hated it). After going back to regular mob, I found that m-80 isn't grippy enough for me with my current shoes (Adidas puig, white soles).

BTW - Kayo grip is really nice, middle of the road grip and slip and is easy to apply and cut (no holes tho) and it's usually free from SW.

Too grippy? The whole point of grip tape is for it to be grippy (Kenny Anderson said something like that along those lines in a Mob commercial when everyone was bitching about it being "too grippy").

Mob is the best grip. If you claim its "too grippy" get out of here. You obviously just can't flick correctly.
