In the Rowley Nine club he says "you should skate the same size as your best day of skating" or something like that. I remember my best day ever skating and it was a 7.5 deck 5.0 Ventures and 44mm wheels, and white etnies. I know I dont skate that now. Anyhow It has me thinking, do any of you guys go by that theory? If so what is it?
-
I feel like I should follow this theory. I’ve been on a bit of a board size and truck madness. My best day skating was with a 7.75 deck, 5.0 venture lo and 50mm wheels. I just don’t know if I can go down to that size anymore haha.
-
There's no question that having a consistent setup helps.
If you want to be consistent and increase skill level, you need to eliminate as many variables as you can.
For a skater that means:
Foot placement
Shoe shape
Shoe size
Socks (thin or thick socks can alter feel)
Truck size
Wheel size
Board size
Griptape
If you keep all these variables consistent, your skating will simply be more consistent, which aids in confidence and learning new tricks.
Look at Shane O'neill and Nyjah Housten. Both have been dailed in for years.
-
Be interested in the time stamp.
I don’t follow this theory, but it makes a lot of sense.
I hate the idea of a ‘quiver’, hate it. And yet....you couldn’t/wouldn’t want to wear the same pair of pants throughout the year, to work, to weddings, to bed. Bad example, but pants are basically skateboarding as has been said, by some clever folk, before.
I’ve had two, ‘best days’, and when I’m on a board closer to that, most tricks just ‘work’. I can get on a 7.75 and kickflip right away/first try, and that will not always happen with my current daily. I fucking hate pushing down the street on hard 50 mm wheels and ollieing over shit which should be included in skateboarding so....dunno.
Interesting topic, I’m more fried than usual rn, I hope others post so it continues

On that case it would be a 7.625 Blind board with Fury 8" (I believe) and some world industries 54mm wheels.
-
Pretty interesting so far it has been decks 8" and under.
-
The big sinner is WB. Decks below 8" typically a maximum of 14" WB.
I've been on a WB trip my self, from 14 to 14,5. Even 14.25 is kinda too big, with Thunders.
-
Im gonna have to say Real 8.25 Full SE decks with Venture 5.8s are now my perfect go-to setups. Im tempted to try out one of the Primitive 8.38 x 31.75 with 14.2 WB tho...

This setup exactly.
-
Interesting idea for a thread. I guess mine would be 5.0 ventures and a 7.75 shop deck. But I think it had more to do with having young, fresh legs than the setup.
-
It was in 1997
Tom Penny Cheech and Chong 7.75
Venture lows.
Spitfire 54s ( I weighed like 100 lbs and had my trucks tight as fuck. No wheel bite back then)
Probably skating DC Dyrdeks or a pair of Simples.
I feel old now. Time to go drink a beer and think about the good old days.
-
Best times that i had was when i didnt even know what trucks i was riding. Now i switch my setup too often.
-
probably a 7.75 when my feet were a little smaller, more recently an 8.25. ive been thinking about stepping down to an 8.1 lately, i dont think i can go smaller than an 8.
-
Probably a 7.5 alien workshop Pendleton era
Some fury trucks
Brian Anderson ricta wheels 54mm
Probably lucky bearings or some shit

For 2019:
Girl G027 Shape 8.25" Deck • Thunder Ti 148s • Bones 54mm V5 Easy Streets 99A • Swiss
Re-learned 360º Flips on this one after years of not even trying them. Stopped doing them after a few horrible bails though where my back foot landed primo and my front rolled over the nose spraining my ankle which lead to a few weeks of barely being able to walk.
For 2020:
Hook-Ups 8" Deck • Indy Ti 139s • Powell 54mm 97A Rippers (great for rough streets/super slippery parks/old people) • Race Reds
My heel and kick flips were the cleanest they've been in a long time on this board. Also started doing a lot more tail and nose slides with the Indy's baseplate coming into play. I'm on an 8.25" now and have a few more that size in the stack but I think I'm going to go back down and mainly stick with 8" to 8.125" in the future.
-
Real Peter Ramondetta Magic Carpet Low Pro 2
8.06
Thunder 147 HL
Spitfire 52mm
Bones reds (?)
Mob
Diamond 7/8
Not sure what number in the pile or the rest of the board specs.

Cool thread. I had assumed I would say something different about back in the day but when I think about it:
(1997/98-ish):
Element Natas hangman 8.38"
Venture midlight 5.8
Spitfire bighead 52mm
(2020):
DOA 8.25" flat
Ace 44
Spitfire 51mm tablets
I'm technically a better skater now at 37, but I remember that age/setup as the height of my fearlessness/ability to jump down/over shit. Not that different seeing them now, 52mm high trucks and similar sized wheels (kind of). That being said, the Element had really steep concave IIRC.

Funny the first day that comes to mind as my best day, I got off work and drove to a spot then warmed up for 15 min doing little shuvs and ollies then filmed a trick I had been wanting to do and got it in another 15 min.
So the first “best day” that comes to mind; I only skated 30 min.
But I do remember my set up. I had a brand new 8” ML deck with a blank blue bottom. With everything else on my board ML except with swiss 6 bearings.
I’m going to try and recreate that complete today, except the only deck I have right now is an 8” red blank bottom.
There are a couple other best days that come to mind, both days I did a bunch of manny tricks that I hardly ever do. I have no idea what my set up was tho, one of those days was 2013 and the other day was 2005
-
Fuck it its the set- up Im riding now. I have progressed more in the past 3 or 4 months than I had in quite a long time. Not being able to go out all the time due to Corona made me force myself to skate flatground (had a very limited bag of tricks on flat, and hated skating flatground)in my house and actually allowing myself to suck has made me learn and progress so much, which has also improved all other areas of my skating as well
AWS 8.25
Thunder 148s
Spitfire F4 99a 53mm (down to like 49s when I started with this deck, at around 45 now)
Spitfire Cheapshots

Best skating days were probably in like 2014 ish on:
Antihero 8.75
Thunder 151
Spitfire F4 52 classics
DC Cole Lite (grip, flex, cushion, heel lock - been after that feel since and haven't really come close)
Been riding 8.75s with a way shorter WB recently as I've tried to dial in my kickflips - seriously like my white whale, never had them dialled - but everything felt good at this time.
I am a lot fatter now, so I don't know if I'd make it past 5 minutes on that 14.75 WB without going into cardiac arrest, but I might dip my toe back in.

I don’t know what it was about this set up, but everything was perfect. Still the best shape I’ve ever ridden. My tricks never looked or felt better. Only thing is I had this board for only 3 days.
This is the only set-up where I could ever land hardflips. I landed about 70 of them during those 3 days, and they were all flawless. I felt like Bryan fucking Herman.
I snapped it on day 4, got another board and hardflips were now gone forever. Haven’t landed one since.

Wow that's nuts. To go from 70 to none.
Gear madness like that drives me INSANE.
My litmus test is 360 flips. If I switch decks and I have to struggle to get them I'm over that shape/size.
I've just come to learn that WB is by far the most important factor to me

My best days have more to do with how my body's feeling than the set up. If my body is doing good, my brain is doing good as well, and I'm more able to adapt to what Im skating

That was my set up that I battled ollieing a bench a few years back when I was determined to get back my pop. Got it then pooched my mci/meniscus and shits been downhill since.
Way back when I remember loving a Reynolds Birdhouse Grim reaper and thought that was perfection (most likely with AA Spits with the PBR labels).

This, but Thunder Hollows. Feet wrapped in City Cups, the only shoe I can skate without having too much pain in my arch these days. Polar 8.25 is the best shape out for me, haven't experimented since. Hope they produce these for a long time, I've started stocking up on decks and shoes already. Really not looking forward to switching anything up again.

Same here too. I have been struggling way to hard with 8.5 plus and I almost overflip 8's, so I settled on 8.1 and my 360 flips have never been better. I have finally found my sweet spot...for now anyways.

I went to stay in Australia for a few months and decided to switch my whole shit up since I was upside down anyway. I went with this setup and it felt so perfect:
Roger 8"
Ace 33
Spit classic 52mm
Swiss.
Then I could never find that shape ever again. It was PS Stix and pretty square, it was so good. For some reason I switched back to Indys after (stage 10 hanger, forged stg 11 baseplate - to make it 51.5mm mid height) but now I can't remember why. Sometimes you just wanna try different shit again, I guess.

33s are dope. Also my favorite looking truck. Not that it matters at all.
I feel you on changing shit, even when what you have is working. I don’t understand what I do that either.

I tried to recreate my prime setup last year.
Girl 7.5
Venture lo 5.0
50mm Spitfires
It felt great like I was home, but I snapped the tail almost immediately. I'm too fat for this now.
Then set up a girl G008 with venture lo 5.2 and it was like slightly bigger/steeper version of the same thing. Felt great but again snapped the tail off. I skated great for like 2 weeks though. I should have kept setting them up and now I'm struggling with bigger boards. I do like my ace 44s though. I think I'll get some 33s and try some more 8 inch decks I have a whole stack of 8s but for whatever reason I keep setting up 8.38s like it's going to click. I'm 6'2 like 200lbs I feel like I should be skating bigger boards but whatever I guess I like to torture myself.
-
How the hell do you remember your “best” day of skateboarding? One of the best times was when I first learned BS flips in 6th grade, but do I wanna chase the set up I once rode as a lil kid?
Fuck no.

Holyshit. Maybe You should go slappy a curb for an hour or two, you sound hostile. Just kidding man, great input.
-
Yeah switching up your shit is fucking stupid. Stick with what works
-
Oh man remembering my setups 15 years ago is embarrassing! At one time I was killing it with some Phantom trucks (blue), a 7.5 Reynolds cheeta print Baker deck with Baker 50mm wheels and some Reds. I prolly rocked like 6 pairs of the Spanky Emerica's and CCS pants.
I'm a better skater with low to the ground stuff but back when all I wanted to do was huck 15 years ago I skated Indy low's with stock bushings, 52ml Spitfire classic, Traffic 8's and some swiss. Fuck, I used to be able to switch heel over the coping of a 6 foot quarter and front board shuv the 7 stair rail at my local park for warm up. Also had about 10 to 15 pairs of Vans chukka lows (that was such a great shoe, they should bring that back) and whatever kinds of jeans or pants I'd get.
Now I skate 8.38/ 31.75 Polar or 8.25/31.75 Sour Solution with Indy lows and bones medium, Spitfire f44 conical 53ml, swiss and have been really into gt blazer lows with some Surf pants.

Always liked the boards from Syndrome distribution; they were a bit heavier but very stiff, thick and had a very full sounding tap when you tapped the tail against the floor in the shop. They retailed cheaper than regular logo boards too so they were great for my $0 / mth income. I learned FS Pop Shuvs in 1 day and just decided to toss a kickflip in there, ended up learning hardflips that day.

My best days have more to do with how my body's feeling than the set up. If my body is doing good, my brain is doing good as well, and I'm more able to adapt to what Im skating
THIS!
I've had a lot of "best day" skate sessions/days over the past 14 years. Generally, the best I felt mentally/physically and with a setup that reflected this was when I was 17-22, so you won't see any sub 8" deck gear.
I was usually rocking a DLX board 8.5" with a slightly fuller shape and medium to deep concave, Indy 149s, Bones STFs 53-54mm. I've been riding almost all the same gear since then (I'm 26 now) with only the deck being different because I've become more experimental with brand and shape than when I was younger.
Can't pinpoint shoes, exactly but I've done a lot of my best skating in
-Es: Square Ones, Cassette Mids, Anti-Social (McCrank shoe)
-Etnies: Marana (pre & post Michelin soles), Joslin, Arto 2, RVM
-Lakai: MJ-3
-Emerica: Hsu Mid, Reynolds G6

Keep coming back to this thread. It’s a really interesting idea. I listened to that Rowley chat. It’s cool, and rad to hear someone so stoked. He says a lot of stuff, as we all kinda seem to do on this subject, and ends up sorta contradicting himself: best days when he was skating the craziest stuff/stuff he’s known for he said 8-8.125” board, and stage 7 146 (I think these are 8.25” no?), and concludes with saying he still skates those trucks with 8.5-9” boards. Which would wildly different. Serious overhang! That’s some Greco tippy level.
I’ve had 3 days that stick out over the years, that were memorably better. None on stuff I currently would ordinarily care to ride. For fucks sake, 1 day was using some small force lows, the other royals....and one thunders that I have no way of knowing if they were lows are not, and I’m assuming were 145s. There isn’t a congruent thread that runs thru, that I know of, because this is all way before I thought about anything other than width (7.5, 7.63, and maybe just under 8”). Maybe it’s wheels (the component with the smallest noticeable change to the way a setup pops imo), all 52 and down, but I don’t think so.
Anyways, total shit post here, so apologies.
Between this and the venture thread, maybe I’ll be able to remind myself to stick with 8” trucks, at the most, and boards 8.25” and down.
Probably not.

Hahaha! Nah and I'm cool with wheelbite... but also they were kinda tight.

That would be a Think Skateboards Wade Speyer 7.75 deck, Venture featherlights 5.2, 40mm glow worm wheels, Powell Ratnuts boltings & NMB bearings.

I would take that set up now! 40mm seems so crazy now. I honestly wonder how me and my friends used to skate a brick city like Boston with those little wheels, without getting pitched every few feet.

7.5 Real Huf, the green one with the snake from that pinstripe series ‘02 ish I think. Thunders. 55mm black Spitfires. Zero Black Widow bearings.

back in 2002-2003, in high school. my best day's setup was a red 8" Think deck, with the black tag on it. had venture 5.2 lows and pig wheels with lucky bearings. bought the entire setup from my buddy for like 40 bucks or something crazy cheap like that. everything was used but in great shape too. gettin all nostalgic right now haha.
still have a soft spot for think skateboards.

I don't remember a "best day", like isn't everyone more or less still learning and progressing, barring injury or adult life taking up too much time for it? I mean I'm 26 now and I keep having better days and learning the next set of tricks while i keep improving my old ones, and I'm excited to keep having better days, I'll land a front 3 on flat soon enough.
And I feel like my curiosity and urge to often change up and experiment with my set up helps to keep things fresh and I dunno, makes learning more fun. I'd hate to get stuck in a rut skating a set up for years without much or any variation.
One of my favourite set ups though was an 8.75 XEN board with thunder mid 148s and 58mm 99a spitfire radials, had a nice mellow flat low feeling for such big wheels. The only difference in what I'm skating now I is that my boards 8.5, the trucks are 149s and the wheels are conical fulls, I want to fuck around with my bushing set up again though, use 2 soft top bushings with or without the washers so I can get the nut down further or maybe swap out for a shorter kingpin and still having the medium looseness I want. There's a lot of variation in turning response at different levels of tightness when you play with the bushing shape, size and hardness combos. Never use those shit bones bushings with the plastic bits on them though they're trash

do you still skate wheels just as big? I'm going through truck and wheel madness trying to find a setup i like with 56mm for the streets.

Yeah they're 58mm 99a spitty full cons, probably closer to 55mm now, but I've got a set of 60mm og classics ready to go on when I can be bothered. Risers and waxing the wheelbite marks is essential though and I'm not exactly a fan of the board feeling so tall so I try to compensate that with flatter shaped boards, mellow concave

Same, had a long weekend recently and spent 3 days in a row skating between 2-3 hours a session. Finally got the feel of my flips and grind tricks; most likely because I was spending more time actually skating instead of obsession about my gear.
8.125 Generator Blank from Canada Skate Shop (Ben Degros' thing)
Venture 5.6 V-Hollow
Bones V3 52mm 83b
Bones Swiss
Mob Grip
Allen Bolts
Just when I was settling into the deck, I snapped the nose on a flat ground FS Flip. A little disappointing, it only lasted 4 weeks of 2-3 times a week sessions but it was fun while it lasted.
Fuck it I'm setting up another 8.125 Generator Blank.

yeah i've skated a good number of 8.125s now as an alternate when i can't find a good 8.25 and never liked them as much - prob cuz i've always felt weird about those in-between sizes - but now i think it's the go to. it's really everything you need and nothing you don't. i'm telling you though try it on 5.8s if you get a chance. the slight monster truck is good. almost impulsively rocked an 8 on 149s :^P

I'm really tempted to get 2 more 8 x 31.75 x 14.125 Generator boards from Tactics but I've already got a huge stack and I'm doing my best to exert self-control. The 8.125 can feel unwieldy at times especially growing up skating 7.5 boards.
I'm wary of 5.8 trucks, I tried Venture standards and Titanium; could not handle them on a 8.25 Primitive.
For the first time in my life I'm snapping boards, went through my entire life only cracking 2. I've snapped 3 this year so far. 2 of which were old Craigslist boards so they could have gotten shitty with time. But the Generator one was a surprise. Don't think I'm a lard ass either (140lbs).

damn means your landing shit with authority although maybe not bolts ;^) i'm around the same weight and snapped a tail once and felt so beast. feel you on the trucks. guess i've just been skating various 8.5" trucks for a while but they feel good on skinnier decks

8.25" real (can't remember the graphic or exact shape)
MOB
148 thunder
Bones hard bushings
52mm bones (can't remember the durometer)

Theeve titanium bolts
Now I always skate big ass boards, trucks & puffy shoes. secretly I want to downsize but I'm a changed man.

this advice is completely subjective. I've had a knee surgery and regularly see a physical therapist for a slipped L4 in my back(both skate related). Prior to these injuries my set up was very consistent. Only purchased 8.4 boards 54mm 99a wheels and Indy 149. I rode just that until my first injury. Now i have four boards that i ride through out the week. my everyday driver is a Popsicle 8.75 55mm 101a wheels ace trucks. My dog walker zip zagger with indy 159 and 56mm 84a wheels. My dr. frankienstien is just old parts that still work bolted together for skating to the store in the rain and i just treat it like shit.
My pride and joy is a skull skates baku board with indy 215s and 54mm 99a wheels.

A tie between two set ups.
Most recent one.
7.5 Alien Workshop steep as fuck
136 Indy Stage 7
Spitfire f4 51mm
With jessup
Reebok club cs
In 2019
And Five boro 8.25 Guadalupe
Indy 149
Spitfire 54
Jessup as well
And dunks trail ends
In 2005?

Might not be my honestly best day skating, but it was my first "real" set up in the late 90's that I have a lot of fond memories of and gained a lot of confidence on (also when I learned how to fall) - New Deal deck, Venture trucks, Bones bearings, Bullet wheels. As far as shoes go it was usually whatever odd stuff Vans was putting out around then (Cab 5/6?).
Met it's demise in the waters alongside 3rd and Army.
-
I've been having lots of good days recently, I don't have time to skate during the week so I skate hard during the weekends, 4 hours each day from 7-11am. Getting familiar with my setup gives me the best days and helps me to fine tune my skating on a daily basis. Ridden 2 BBS 8.125s in a row and through that I've learned that I'm kicking my foot too far out for kickflips, by later in the weekend I've corrected my pop and flick.
Gear madness is a double-edged sword - stressing over the tiniest details your setup but you get a setup that works with you, instead of against you.
Super crispy boards are nice, but personally I like when the board is 2-3 sessions and the tail is a little worn. Don't have the same explosive legs so have it more worn in helps with the control.

The last day I remember feeling super good and comfortable on my board was:
8.5 bacon
Thunder raws 149
Spitfire 53 radials
Olympia bearings
I also fucked my ankle up on a tre on this set up and my ankle hurts doing kick flips now. Afraid to try tres now. But I switched to a smaller set up and last I skated I did a few kick flips with no ankle pain. So that’s cool.
What happened with the botched tre? On flat?
I've never had them but a lot of people seem to hurt their ankles doing them.
Yeah just on flat. It’s like my front foot never leveled out and stayed perpendicular to the ground and my weight cane down on it. Like I still won’t try to do a tre now. Shit got me shook

I’ve heard that you should always dress in what makes”you” feel your best, or most confident. I know that seems like such an obvious thing but I’ve def caught myself saying why the hell am I trying to wear these pants, shoes etc. as I’ve gotten older I certainly think what makes me feel best is NOT what I did when I was 16, my board is always an 8.5 now andy trucks are looser.
