haven't seen anybody do it in years and always thought it was bad-ass. who's done it? post pictures if you got them.
-
do crooks/ sw crooks count? it's kinda the easy way out, but it's the only way i get to the axle. doing it on 50-50s is fucking bad ass!
-
Done it on grind kings when I was a pup. Haven't acheived this legendary status since.

Sure, every pair of trucks I've ever had. I am too cheap to buy new ones.
-
i always grind my trucks to the axle. imma have to look around to see if i have a set lying around for a photo.
-
you know your trucks are good and broken in when you can see the axle
-
Not yet, but I'm gonna do it at least once. The back truck on my cruiser board is worn down so you can see the kingpin, and I have some nosegrind grooves on the front truck.
-
this is a grind king i skated down for a couple of years ago.

notice the light passing underneath the hanger....

I'm guessing you have to be part of a long-standing and torrid love affair with all things grindable that are made of concrete to wear your trucks down this far. I just don't see it happening if you're scraping metal coping. Confirm/deny?

it will just take longer, abrasion is abrasion.
but metal coping sucks, get in a fucking pool, ahhhhhhhh!
-
yeah. every pair, unless i give them to a grom in need. i've not got my aces down to the axle yet, but i'm getting there. the summers shaping up nicely and i predict copious amounts of slappies and a new diy spot will get them there by the end of august. ahhhh slappies.

I confirm. My friend has been riding his Krux III for years and there is still a lot of aluminium to grind.
-
the truck has always broken before i got to that point basically. but thats probably cause i take them drops a lot, i had an indy crack completely in 2 perfect pieces.
-
I haven't done this in years and years. Back in 88, before my friends and I discovered waxing curbs, we would just raw haul as fast as we could and slappy into grinds at a curb cut. 12 foot grinds, no wax, unpainted. Ground down to the axle on one pair. Gullwing super pro III's. My first trucks were well on their way (Tracker Ultra lites) but the kingpin broke and those baseplates were so lame, the kingpin wasn't removable so basically ditched them.
I once saw Sam Devlin grind through the pivot part of his Indy's from doing nose and tail slides. So raw.
These days, all I really skate are plaza ledges. The ledges there (granite and metal) always seem to be slippery and waxed. Probably never gonna get down to the axle the rest of my life.
-
I just remember eric dressens trucks always looked the best, flat across, all the way to the axle.
Ive done it once or twice way back but now the axles bend too much before I can get to that point.
-
on the tensor trucks i merked the fuck out of those plastic things that helped you slide noseslides and tailslides. those things were actually pretty shitty - mostly just because they axles would get bent real easily. the turning was real stiff too i didnt really like the feel
-
on the last few sets of thunders i've had, the hangar started to crack around the axle on the part close to the wheels after being ground down to the axle. i usually replace them before they completely snap in half.
-
every pair of indys i get i take um all the way down. once i set up a new pair i always wonder why i waited so long because they grind 10 times better new haha
-
The old Gullwings seemed to grind down just in time for my one new set-up a year at Christmas. As soon as I find a decent curb spot around here, it's on. I don't get free stuff anymore so these Indy's I bought will be ground until they scream for mercy. FDR is starting the job but I don't get there often enough anymore.
-
my buddy has a groove in his indy's that are about to the axle from doing nosegrinds. it's awesome.
-
not yet. but imma keep trying.
-
<---Trying to take the krooked route
-
Just barely on the current set! definitely on the crook spot as well
-
i've yet to do it myself, been spoiled with free product for too long, but i hope to put down some serious slappy abuse and make it happen before the end. i think the full-truck version looks great and the crooked version ends up looking like you should do some other kinds of grinds periodically! ha ha, just playing. but either way, it's awesome and it's also amazing how much work it takes to get through like 1/4 inch of metal... stoked to read and see all this, thanks guys, keep 'em coming!
-
the only pair i ever did it on was a pair of stage 8 indies and only the back truck. maybe one more time on a set of thunders on the krook spot.
-
seeing grinded down trucks makes me want to skate so much for some reason haha.
-
Did it when i was a really broke kid on some old Indy's back in the 90's, haven't done it recently because I'd been habitually buying and getting new gear for a bit, but it's funny that this thread came up because last week I made a conscious decision to go ahead and plow through the trucks I have now and grind 'em the fuck down.
-
(http://i40.tinypic.com/2zywgeb.jpg)
this is the only one i could find
-
its really sick to just look at all the grind marks on your board... there is a memory for each one
-
I've done it. In the early 90's I rode Gullwings and that was kind of a copout because of the groove and the magnesium. When I switched back to Indy's in 1995 I ground those down to the axles(the rear truck) then swapped out a hanger and did it again to the older front truck. I have only bought one set of trucks since and that was just to use some new pieces when I had to. I still have the original baseplates from the 1995 pair(anodized red) around somewhere. I always got new boards and wheels and all that jazz but I refused to ever change out the trucks. I liked to get already broken in hangers from the shop bin and use those. Not because I am cheap...it's just what I prefer.
-
The combination of pivot fakie grinds, ss crooks en fs 5-0 on transition got me my first pair of trucks worn out to the axle, recently.
-
fs 5-0s on tranny are the main cause for indys going down to the axle in a matter of 2 months
-
(http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/3214/photo241.jpg)
edit: these were already pretty ground down when i got them, but they are all the way to the axle.
-

Exactly. Every single grind i do on tranny basically hits the same spot on my back truck. My back truck looks a year older than the front
-
Last set and current set. Just got down to it a couple days ago
-
what kind of board is the one with what looks like mr.t?
-
Girl Brian Anderson BA TEAM
-
is that a board thats out now? what size is it? that is the best thing girl has ever made. by far.
-
I was so close to getting my old Thunders (the ones I lost at Heathrow) down to the axle. I was replacing a kingpin on one and the owner of the skate/snow shop by my house (not Uprise) made some kind of condescending remark about how I should probably look into new trucks because I was so close to the axle. Ass.
-
Never really thought about it but there it is peaking through. I've been wanting to try some ACE for awhile. I usually just skate the same indys until they break and then get some new ones with the lifetime warranty. fun.

Every pair here, too. I hate new trucks.
Indy "lights" rule.
-
Yeah, it's out now. It's an 8.5
-
I did it about 20 years ago to a set of Gullwing magnesiums.
That probably counts as cheating.

i've gone through a bunch of hangers doing this. i want to say it was an old(2002-2004)rick howard 2 page ad that showed a close up of his board on one side. his trucks were grinded down to the axle and i thought it was the coolest thing ever, so since then i've tried to do it with every pair of trucks that i get. i also used to skate this one ledge almost everyday anywhere between three and eight hours at a time for a good eight months before it got skate stopped. i went through a few sets during that time period

I've never actually skated Tensors but I ended up with a hand-me-down board a few years back that had these trucks on it:
I was so embarrassed to skate those...they're awful, literally the worst fucking thing ever.
Perhaps surprisingly the board that had those trucks on it was really nice except for the trucks...Anti-Hero, 54mm Spitfires, Bones Swiss...what an abomination...
-
I've had mine down to the axle for a bit now. I was so stoked too because I haven't done that since I was a little kid doing slappies for days.

I've done a couple sets. Now that there are so many skateparks I don't grind as many curbs as the old days.
-
I've done it on a few sets. I hate getting new trucks, and see nothing wrong with an old set until they are unridable.
-
Sure, every pair of trucks I've ever had. I am too cheap to buy new ones.
Yep, me too!
-
I did it with a pair of Krux Downlows, when they were ljust released, then I did it on a sey of Indy Lows, and then I did it with a set of black Thunders. Now, I change my trucks too much.
-
i've done it once a few years ago, venture highs. i was proud.
-
What's the shortest time someone on here ever grinded down to the axle? I never did it myself. I'm going to do my best now.
-

During the winter, skating the mini ramp at my work every night after closing, I got down to the axle of my back truck in 2.5 months strictly from bs 5-0 fakies, fs 5-0s, and our no waxing the coping rule.

Oh shit. That's gnar
-
that's alot of slappies...haven't done it in years either....axel slip would drive me to insanity before I even got near. Remember before they moved the mounting hardware holes back, guys would wear through the baseplate from doing crooked grinds.
-
(http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk131/Mr_Friendly_photos/securedownload-6.jpg)
I skated these for almost 7 months, I think the majority of the wear is from front 5-0s and smiths on tranny ( I take pride in actually standing up and grinding 10+ feet, vs. the very popular frontside kickturn truck tap) If the kingpin hadn't snapped off, I'd still be skating them.
-

Have not done it in a while, my ACE are getting worn down though and I plan on getting to the axle on them. And I once got to the axle in 6 weeks.

On my last board, before it got jacked out of my car, the back truck was so jacked. It was an indy baseplate with a tracker hanger I believe. It had a groove down to the axel from doing f/s 5-0s, and the nut for the king pin couldn't be adjusted because it was grinded so far down from smith grinds. I wish I had a picture to show. They turned so good.
-
i broke some silvers once relevant to this thread
but
the simple question why would you grind down to the axle?

I just did it... No photo evidence though. I gave the trucks to my next door neighbors kid cause he just started skateboarding and needs some stuff.

Breaking in new trucks is the worst, which is why it makes sense to keep your trucks for a long time.

You fucking suck at transition. Don't talk shit. Especially considering grinding unwaxed pool block (which you have never done) will grind your truck down like a motherfucker. But again, you entered I $100 bet and had a year to learn it, and at the end of said year had 3 tricks, and appeared to be unable to keep your speed on a 3 foot mini, so don't act better than it.

i don't know if that's what he intended to do, but i don't see how anything cotg posted was talking shit on transition, read more like a counter-argument to bobbito's theory, and it made sense, considering the majority of the posts i read at least on that page consisted of people talking about how they did it through 5-0s and smiths on transition, and most of the newer generation of skaters don't really skate transition like that. in my local park, the only time the bowl really gets any attention is when kids are launching out of it, i've seen like two dudes actually grind the coping. i've had my same trucks for about two years now, but i know dudes who are down for new completes semi-regularly.
-
I've never gotten all the way to the axle, my trucks always end up breaking or fucking up somehow before I could even get close to grinding em down to the axle, so I replace em.
And I think i might be the only person here who actually doesn't mind breaking in new trucks. It's really not all that bad. I will admit though I hate it when I break a set of trucks just as I get them feeling right and turning the way I like em to.

The key is putting theory into practice. Want to meet up then go to venice park? I'd be curious to see how your claim that everything in the deep end of bowls pro tranny guys are doing is lame is based on practice.
-
that's based on common sense.

ah yes, the OG T. Paine.

Nah, Itchy is always doing the killing, Scratchy never comes out on top, it's always a one sided battle. I'd say they're more like Spy vs. Spy

Like I said, low key session and I'm down, angry competitive session, not so much. Not my game.
Bring some ice cream and everything will be fine.

my indy's lasted forever
-
I never grinded to axle, but my Thunders are getting a nice crooked grind hole in them, so this may be my first pair. Hopefully they dont bend or something until I achieve this, but Thunders had never let me down.

Or just skating skateparks with metal ledges.
Anyone skating the streets with real cement/granite ledges will go through a set of trucks with a quickness.

thunders are the shit! i got a pair for my birthday when i was fifteen and im still ridin em now and im 20

back when we had the parking block slappy jam at the bridge, i took a set of indys down to the axle in about two months. i really liked that thing.
but most of my life, it's taken about a year or so to get there. except for stage 10's, which must be a softer alloy, since now i can't seem to get more than 5 or 6 months out of a set of trucks.
i remember reading about tom knox grinding a set of indys to the axle in ONE DAY. i really wish that would've happened now, during the "everything a pro does is filmed" days. that must have been the most epic slappy session ever.

also breaking in ledges will tetar your trucks apart. i used to see how quickly i could blow through a set of trucks. i got a pair to the axle in just about a month once. i still want to try and get it done in under a week

Got down the axle of my back truck yesterday, i'll post a pic when it becomes more significant.

I've found a solid metal edge will tear your trucks apart on some tricks. If you do long grinds on a metal edge it kind of cuts into it. Cement can go either way, granite will fuck your shit up though, in a nice and smooth way
-
Yeah it does depend on what it is.
Most park ledges here are rounded. A good angle iron ledge will eat up your trucks fast.

I love the look of a fresh deck, and wheels with well grinded in trucks.

Old trucks and old bearings with a new board and wheels is the best.

I thought I was going to hit the axle but my indy baseplate finally decided to crack today. I think I've been riding this set for ~4 years.

I guess the new stage 10's don't have the extra bolt holes which probably make them a bit stronger.

why? breaking in new trucks is the worst part of skateboarding.
i'd rather take a hipper or roll my ankle than break in new trucks.

Cause you know you have skated them to death
When i get new trucks i just put in my bones bushings and there ready to go

I'm going on my second year with my indy's and I think my back truck is getting real close to the axle from feebles. i kind of want to do it just because I never have. I almost can't even remember what new trucks are like anymore

Big Brother Magazine once had an article on the number of grinds it takes to get down to the axle of various brands of trucks. If I remember correctly, the least was 200ish grinds on Grind Kings. I think they were doing 50/50's on a curb outside their office. It was reminded me of the Tootsie Roll Pop commercial about "how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop."

I've had the same problem, just check to make sure your hardware is still tight at least once a day. if it gets loose and you dont notice then any sideways torsion is going to fuck the fuck out of your mounting holes. then shit gets all crooked and wobbly

Speaking of the Indy book, check out pages 162-3. Danny Sargent was pretty rough on trucks. The fact that Indy's were beefier then makes it even gnarlier.

What's the shortest time someone on here ever grinded down to the axle? I never did it myself. I'm going to do my best now.

what a beautiful thread! I ran across the site doing a google search for "grind trucks through axle"......because it gets me off seeing damage and I do damage. I pretty much grind every truck to the axle and have been skating since 1987 ...to be fair about half of the time I have skated I have gone to the axles and pretty much kill every truck. I too, love seeing the grinds and gashes because as one of you said "each one has a memory". Skateboarding isn't a bunch of tricks to me....it's me putting myself into the board and whatever I am skating....what comes out of it is also ME....in damage left by me. Make sense? I did this up with one of my trucks for fun.

Guaranteed for life against manufacturing defects. Grinding down to the axle falls under normal wear and tear.

This thread has me determined to hit axle on my current indys. I haven't got down to the axle in like 7 years, something else always breaks before then, and it's been even longer since I got to the pivot cup. Then again being half the size I am now and being a broke little kid probably helped me out.

Some dudes earlier in the thread mentioned grinding through indies and getting new pairs.

Bought these Indys in the winter of 2011. Spent 2012 grinding them out and hit the axle. Frontside slappy bite marks. The last pair of Indys I had were years ago - the baseplate broke after a couple of weeks of flatground tricks, it was disheartening so I switched to Destroyers. I guess they were a defect pair of Indys though, these have stayed on point. Shout out to Studio

Anyone know a good truck that'll grind down fast? Ive always wanted to get grooves or grind to the axle, but my trucks always break before that. I hear thunders grind down kinda fast, I'm just afraid ill bend the axle like every other truck. I need new trucks so I want one that'll turn well and grind down fast. Any suggestions?

yeah. every pair, unless i give them to a grom in need. i've not got my aces down to the axle yet, but i'm getting there. the summers shaping up nicely and i predict copious amounts of slappies and a new diy spot will get them there by the end of august. ahhhh slappies.
k
Aces ride really nice but seam to wear down faster then other trucks. The slimmed down form lightens the truck but I crook grinded through my last pair. It is honestly my sloppy addiction that ruins trucks so fast.

Was getting pretty close on my back truck, but the bottom part of the hanger cracked before the axle could be reached. I got an extra 149 hanger from a friend who barely skates and used it as a replacement. Now my front truck is all grinded up and my back truck looks brand new; shit looks weird.

They are cheap and make your trucks not suck, unless your broke, then you can't afford them or new trucks anyway, hense the grinding down to the axl.

Bones bushings are crap. They have very good urethane so they feel great for about a month but that plastic insert is a gimmick and completely unnecessary

Bump.
Looks like the beginning of the end for my theeve TiH (titanium axleless hangers). There's no traditional axle so it grinded a hole through and is starting to hollow away. These are 3 years old now, I wonder how long til the truck compound fractures and the wheel falls off..

Nothing grinds curbs better than the TiH. And no other truck can take the same abuse. Grinding to the axle on other trucks is like a knife cutting warm butter compared to these.
-

Ace definitely has the sharpest turning radius/response. Theeve turning is in the middle... a bit slower than Ace and a bit quicker than Indy.
-
I get that the underside of those trucks are thinner than other trucks, but that looks like a cavity in the hanger. What's the deal?
-

Yep, insanely thin. Would be nice if they gave you an extra few mm of thickness but I guess the trucks would be even more expensive. Here's what the underside looks like. You can see the holes as it hollows out

Hmm, good to know!
Just finished with these Indys after two years or so. The back truck is worn down to the axle. I was hoping to hit the axle with the front one as well, but after the bushing got shredded I figured it was time for a change (and bought new Indys):

Theeve TiH trucks are one in a million trucks, three years for a truck is pretty hard to come buy these days and you're right, they grind concrete like no other truck will, especially after they're worn in a bit, keep an eye out for the next gen TiH coming up in the near future, I think they will have a bit more underneath.
But if it helps you to know, you still have a fair bit to go yet, duncombe apparently had a set that had a gap formed three times the size of that before they let go. Also, the TiH has the best turning out of all the theeve's, they're pretty much a full titianium ace hanger.

the kingpin broke because your top bushing has been squeezed flat and the washer presses against the hanger thus creating a lever and braking the kingpin. the proof for this are the marks that the washer has left on the trucks. these marks occur on pretty much all set ups but when the "leverage" occurs strongly then the kingpin breaks. if you replace the kingpin you'll have it broken again within a few days. just make sure you get a fresh top bushing

Could take off and put back on the last two bushings with out removing the nut and washer, and the last washer actually popped off over the nut while skating.
I'm not actually good at skating, I just enjoy skating trucks till the end.
Man this is why I kind of miss being broke and not having a good job.... The days of skating my shit till death arent really here anymore, as I give away all my semi grinded trucks.... fuck it if you do slappy grinds on crusty curbs you're gonna be running through hangers just a little bit slower than running through decks.

Not on a set of stage 11s but on a set of stage 10s, yes.
Mail those fuckers in to NHS and they'll replace em for you.

The indy's took 4 months to hit and was stoked being my first pair to hit axel. Got the black Tensors as a gift and as Tensors are they refused to turn so my goal was to get them to axel as quick as i could (6 weeks) to justify buying the 159's im on now.
(sorry for huge photo.)

I'm honestly shocked that someone skated a set of tensors long enough to grind them to the axle.

I used to be subbed to Skateboarder (never subbed to TSM) and I swear I saw the same thing in Skateboarder.
Some guy just rode a bowl/pool and kept doing frontside grinds and like 4 hours later he had ground down to the axle.
Is this the same thing you're talking about?

Such a sick thread. Only did it once and that was some gullwing super pro III's back in the late 80's.
Would love to get down to the axle on some indy's but just don't skate enough at the ripe age of 42. I've broken a lot of trucks the past several years though and I suppose that doesn't help to get to the axle due to constant replacement.

Hey Slap! new here, loving this thread. Anyway, I was happy today that after one year and a month of work I eventually reached this point :
(http://img11.hostingpics.net/pics/590255Acetruckback.jpg) (http://www.hostingpics.net/viewer.php?id=590255Acetruckback.jpg)
Also really glad that it happened just at the end of the session, and on a slow flatground trick...
First time breaking a truck also, except for a few kingpins and maybe cracking a couple baseplates back in the day.
The front truck is still holding despite the aluminium being cracked all around the axle at the k-grind groove:

Could have gone with with a normal kingpin. I think they're interchangeable. Let's hope your get your truck back and not new replacement trucks, cuz they might be impressed by your work and wanna hook you up with new ones after they see that beautiful beautiful thing. :)
-
Looking real good somethingmustbreaknow! Plenty of life left in them. I'd be hesitant setting up a new pair if I had trucks like that but sometimes you just get the feeling of having to have new shit and it can be hard to overcome. :)
-
yeah, i feel the same. but i hated the wheels that were on there. they were already fucking small and had couple of flatspots.
the axlenuts were fucked up as well so undoing them, change the wheels and crank the nuts back on would have been some
kind of pain in the ass. so i a decided that i go christmas complete for the spring and retired the trucks. the backtruck actually
looks kinda worn too from back and front tails on the baseplate but i seem not to be able to take a pic that captures it properly

I remember reading an old AVE interview where he said when he's setting up "new" trucks he likes to keep as much of his old parts from his previous set of trucks as possible, right down to the pivot cup. Ever since reading that interview I've adopted the same habit with new trucks as well. So if anything, just be like AVE; get some new trucks and just move your old hangers over, and then when those are done just switch em out with the new unused hangers.

Looks like the truck was ridden without a wheel until it ground itself down on the ground. Possibly run over by a car??
powertools, fucking fake
When they take power tools to trucks in videos are they actually doing something or just fucking around? It looks like they're doing something to the kingpin...I think JT has a video doing it and raven in PS also does it

If you replace a kingpin or whole base plate, etc. the new kingpin and nut are going to stick up past the ground down hanger.

-
Yes, I'm a fan of the slappy.
For a while, I was really stoked on the idea of grinding these down until they actually broke. But I'm going to take them off while they still have a little life left and use them for a cruiser type set up.

Recently retired these and put them on my cruiser. Once I get a good amount of axel showing on my back truck, I rotate my hangers and grind the other one down. I mostly skate pool coping and go through a pair of trucks in about a year.

Is Gnar Hammered still making boards?
Nah, I'm over making boards. Things changed over time and after a while everyone I was skating and filming with rode for other board companies and it didn't make sense for me to make boards anymore. I'm in the process of rebranding Gnarhammered into a video production company under a new name.

yeah. every pair, unless i give them to a grom in need. i've not got my aces down to the axle yet, but i'm getting there. the summers shaping up nicely and i predict copious amounts of slappies and a new diy spot will get them there by the end of august. ahhhh slappies.
Nice.
Yeah I managed this on GK's in like 1999, but they had the allen key kingpin so you could actually grind them to the axle without the kpin biting.

I think it's viewed as more of a personal feeling, and probably adds credibility to the ego for being the opposite of a poser by taking em' down to the axle. Who knows.

1. there's something satisfying about seeing a worn-out truck
2. Is it impressive> not really, but a lot of us constantly buy new skate gear, we dontneed. Trucks being the longest lasting product, I see it as a badge of honnor to get the maximum usage out of truck before switching them out.

I love the way a crook groove looks.
Its not really picture worthy yet; but I just broke through to axle on some 1.5 year old indys. The odd thing is its on the front truck. I've never hit axle on the front truck first. Always back truck, heel side first. Then the front truck. I think its just from a ton of slappies.

I need smooth grinds perpetually, I need to switch up my trucks at least 4 times a year instead of waiting 4 years to switch them. less energy needed for speed if my trucks are new and grinding smooth. Invest in your trucks, new trucks always grind better, don't wait. Support the local skate shop that truly supports you.

I had a pair of thunder hollow lows, they grinding down too quick in my opinion, I guess they are great but get 4 at a time. Ventures are great if you haven't tried them. Krux are a bit heavy but grind smooth for long, with dlk. indy's you already know are great.

I did skate them a lot in those 3 months, I try to skate 6/7 days a week so a destroyed setup is kinda expected after some time. Got a new set of trucks on ice already for the inevitable moment when these are gonna break, but they still have lots of life left.

(I don't know how to post images)
I'm currently skating a Silver 139mm M-Hollow Leeper 8.0
Only the kingpin is hollow. The kingpin clearance isn't the best after some weardown and I actually grind the kingpin often if the wheels aren't fully locked in (sometimes my 5050s go back truck heelside and front truck kinda in the middle between heelside and toeside), and that caused the front kingpin hole to close (from grinding?!) which is pretty funny. The nut got all trashed too. I couldn't find the height of them at silver website but was wondering if is there anyway to make up for more kingpin clearance on them since besides that and the pivot cups breaking (already swapped for new ones) it's still pretty decent.
I'm from Brazil and a new set of Indy trucks are like 600 where the minimum wage is 1100

you have to upload to somewhere like imgur, copy the exact url of the photo located to the exact file extention (i.e. something like imgur.com/a3D5Hwg3G/backtail.jpg)
then click the little mona lisa thing underneath the B (it says "insert image" on hover")
this will create (http://) and will position your cursor perfectly in between those. Paste your image URL there and voila you have image linked

Set these up in january. Not just pinchy grinds but those are definitely the biggest contributors. Should last a few more boards.

Thought my Indys were almost done, but this thread makes me hopeful that I'm able to get some more sessions out of them. The kingpin and the bolt are wearing down really hard, till the point where my bushings are squeezed together but I'm gonna ride 'em until they break.

Yeah, or learn backside (or frontside) grinds, haha. The other side of the truck is relatively untouched.

It still worked, maybe even lubed the ledge like those tensor slide plates. But I didn't want to keep skating it til it fell off and pitched me so just changed trucks

Actually started learning those two days ago, but anything backside feels like I'm going to die. Right now I'm learning ollie to bs 50 and bs 180s to get used to the feeling of backside tricks but I'm having a hard time adjusting. Right now I only got bs nose and boardslides, so I'm trying to learn bs crooks as I've heard that they're similar to noseslides but they aren't really clicking for me.

I wanted to ride these 139 hollow forged a bit longer, but 8.25 decks feel too tippy for me with them and I will retire them. For some reason tippy setups cause ankle rolls in my experience.

I hit the axle on my trusty standard 144 Indys today. I was just working on a clip on the slappy curb so I had to wax them down to get the clip.
I had them for 20 months only just slightly worn down but last month 4 or 5 intense slappy sessions on a hard ass curb that took their toll on them.
I am now debating whether I should upgrade to 149s as I skate 8.5 decks or get another pair of 144s. Also, should I get something fancy like hollows, titaniums. Or should I even consider trying some Lurpivs.

Just out of curiosity: I would assume that titanium axles take longer to break, than normal steel axles once you are actually down to the axle. (Like in the Titanium Indys or the Thunder Titanium Lights). Can anyone report on this?

I think that's a safe thing to assume, based on those weird Theeve Titanium trucks with the hollowed out hangar that didn't even have an axle.

159s will lock into slappies even nicer than 149s. I was a 149 guy for most of my skating life until I got some hollow 159s last year.
either way good work!

@tuesday
I went through a pair of the first titanium Indys and I will say the titanium axel felt super sticky to the point where I didn't even enjoy grinding on them. This is actually backed up in the density of the metals.
Titanium is around 4.5 g/cm3
Steel is around 8.05 g/cm3
So where it is lighter, once you hit the axel they scream to a halt. With that said, I loved those trucks up until they hit the axels.

To add to the topic, I absolutely love the grind on my trucks, once they’re well and proper “into” the axle.
For me, trucks are at their best when they’re on their last legs. Not to mention, my standard, cast, team issue Thunders now weigh less than even the lightest production truck available, thanks to all of the material that has been removed.
Worth noting though: Ive only ever run the standard steel axles, so I can’t comment on them titanium jawns.
-
sorry if it's already been mentioned, but has anyone noticed that when you grind on the axel it creates a kinda burning metal smell, but you don't get that smell at all when grinding on the hanger? Never heard that mentioned by anyone before, but this year I axeled my first pair and was surprised when I noticed it. Felt like I learned a cool secret.
-
Grinding the axle sucks, the shrieking noise is unbearable. Only thinking about it gives me goosebumps.

I feel the same, absolutely hate grinding new trucks and only after they are well worn I'll be able to grind at my maximum potential. New trucks stick way too hard on curbs and ledges for me.

@Easy Slider I am running 159s hollows on my big boy and the flipping can get tiring.
Looks like you grinded down some standard 144s.
Forged Hollow 149s will be 1.5mm shorter, which can help for flips and board feel.
I am on 144 Titanium since 2 months on my main board and these feel great.
If you don't care about flipping all day, go for 159 forged or titanium. Titanium are a bit more expensive, but also a bit lighter.

How long do trucks usually last grinding on that axle? Been skating for most of my life and spoiled myself in my adult years of buying too many new trucks due to the madness, so I've only axled one set of 44's that I still got. Little bit peeking through on one of em, the other truck probably soon. I just retired em thinking they'd probably break next slappy but maybe I'm wrong?
-
I have a set of Indy hollows that are 3/4s through the axle. They didn’t break but bent enough to start coning wheels so they’re retired now.

It all depends on what you are skating and how hard you are grinding, especially on rough or nasty edges.
Some trucks will never get through to axle with the amount of wax and slippery edges or nice coping, but others can burn through a set very quickly if skating super rough or unfinished edges, pool coping, crusty curbs, or anything where the truck metal (axle included) is softer than the material they are grinding.
There is one curb that I know people skate and we don't know what was in the mix when it was poured, but it will eat trucks faster than anything else, no matter what is put on it, as well as it being almost still completely intact while other curbs are very worn down.
-
We’ve got a curb like that. I’ve been skating it for 5 years and it’s lost nothing. Another one I skated for a year was toast.

Swiss curbs are like that, must be granite or something. I never thought we‘d get one to grind in the first place but my buddy insisted and waxed it up like a madman, but it ate my trucks in no time. Nice feeling tho.

Nah. You can still get a shit load of life out of truck if there is only a little axle showing. Keep going! You will likely crack the hanger before you grind through the actual axle. Just keep your eye on any hair line fractures that might develop. When the hangar cracks and bends... then you are done...

My indy forged/hollow 159's retired after 2 years of use. Lots of slappy and ledge skating on Canadian crust.

I’ve been curious about that mix as well, and have even asked some local masonry supply places if there is a steel epoxy component available. Turns out there is, but it is not often used on street infrastructure such as curbs. The best advice I got was that certain mixes source their sand elsewhere, and it might be a more abrasive sand component.
I will say that loading dock angle iron ledges are hanger hungry as well, especially on crooks.

First time on thunders in over a decade. They were pretty good. Plenty of life left in the axles with some solid grooves. Kinda bummed the bushings split on both trucks so now they’re loose and the kingpins are so ground down can’t change the bushings but hey something has gotta breakdown first.

Nice I only had to go back one page to find what I was looking for in this regard.
I'm still pretty far away but just starting to get through the extra bolt pattern. I'll definitely achieve this before grinding the hangers to the axle since I only grind buttery steel coping and I can't find a concrete ledge to save my life, nor do I know how to do slappies so yeah... I'll be back 1000 noseslides later.

An update on my quixotic quest to ride these indy's until they are dead. I'm now all the way through the hollow section of the axle, and working on grinding through the axle fully. At that point, not sure what will happen. Hanger is holding tough, no cracks anywhere and to be honest the grind is really great, i can even push through pretty crusty red curbs at this point.
I was planning on mounting these on a wall eventually, but now I think i might do some clear resin and make a paperweight with the truck inside...

I’m going to submit them as a warranty as a joke when they finally break
-
Mine always break or bend before i get that far through…. Looks sick…
Worst is when they bend slightly and your wheels start coning real bad
-
My other thunders were way more washed but i left those at the skate shop. Took these down to to the axle a while back. Kinda wish i had stuck with em

Do ventures/thunders grind down faster than independents?
I didn't spend enough time on either to know for sure, but they seemed like they were getting worn down much quicker than indys

I can't speak for Venture but all my Thunder trucks back in the day ground down way faster as my Indys nowadays.
I never was able to fully axle a Thunder, because they always broke. But that was like 10+ years ago.

Well, it happened. "Independent: Built to Grind"....... I guess not
Took just over two years, ultimately I didn't grind all the way through the axle the way I was hoping. So close though, there's literally just a sliver holding the hanger together. Planning to pour it in some clear resin and make a paperweight out of it i think. Interesting factoid: These trucks weighed 358g when I got them, I just weighed them at 324g, so I went through 34g of material.
Dear Indy/NHS social media team: I will gladly let you use these photos (if you wish) in exchange for some accreditation and a new set of Stage 4s. Please don't pull it for your instagram without asking again!

Pretty sure someone in the ace thread already axled them in the first few months (or even weeks?) after release. A local homie also got a super deep coping groove, might take a picture next time I see him

So I have a new paperweight for my desk after a long weekend of pouring resin. Took 7 pours and about 3 days. There are a couple things I wasn't prepared for so if I ever do it again I'll be more prepared. The trucks have a hollow axle, hollow king pin, and a large cavity in the baseplate so those areas have some air bubbles I wasn't prepared for. The first couple pours were with some older leftover resin too so they have some bubbling, but overall the clarity is really good and you can see all the little details on the truck with is really cool. It's also pretty heavy and has some sharp corners so I expect I will be murdered with it. Had to add some watermarks to the photos for safety (sorry Indy)

I did reach out to the Indy brand manager after their instagram post and to their credit, they did throw a pair of Stage 4s 151s in the mail to me. I've got them set up along with a brand new pair of Ace AF1 55s for comparison, so looking forward to trying them head to head and seeing how they compare. The Stage 4s are significantly heavier, weighing in at 408g/truck. The only heavier truck I've ridden is Ace AF1 66s which weighed in at 411g. These Ace AF1 55 hollows came in at 373g. Will check back in another 2 years when I hopefully have these axled.

I trip out when i see people with hangers that are just evenly ground down along the whole thing. All of the times i've gotten to axle it's in my back heel corner where i do front 5-0s on pool coping. what grinds are you doing where you consistently use the whole hanger like that?

Yeah pretty much, the spot I mainly skate is kinda low for doing proper nose/tailslide, I mean they're possible but I much rather prefer slappying up into them. I only really learned slappy noseslides in the last 7 or 8 months or so, and as such spent a lot of time on this set doing them and learning variations etc. Funnily enough I have the same wear on the back truck of my old set of ventures as I had switch slappy noseslides before I could do regular ones - same deal pretty much, learn a trick and rinse it for months. Here's a couple old thunder hangers from 2016-2018 I think, first two to axle and third one cracked to the point the hangar moved around.

The wear pattern is an interesting one. I keep meaning to take some pics of different trucks from people I know, but the best examples as follows:
Transition only skaters - usually not a lot of wear all over, mainly back heel point from grinds
Curb slappy fifties only - usually flat wear the whole width of the truck, often front more so than back right across with back more in the middle, but not always
Curb / noseslide / crooks only - usually more interesting wear across the front / back truck faces from the angle of crooks and significant baseplate wear, sometimes through to the pivot cup area.
The fact that some guys will skate a curb one session, then hit the park and skate pool coping or other stuff, or even those more all rounders make for more even wear but any rougher edges, be it ledge, coping, raw whatever, you are going to take off a lot more metal each session than those who skate just a plain smooth metal coping / edged skatepark or similar surfaces.
Edit:
You can easily tell what I usually skated a lot more, from these three old boards I took pics of from a while back (last pics in particular) which are all down to axle and then retired, one more than the others, but nothing like some of the awesome trucks I have seen here. I also went up board and truck size, so these have been hanging around more so waiting for a new home than anything else:

if you have a parking block where your truck can sit right on top, all 4 wheels freely sticking out at the side. when you can eat the entire thing it will wear the truck out a lot more evenly. i was hitting on up like that on saturday night for awhile.
i am trying to flip my trucks around when i switch decks, and do as many diferent grinds from from different stances to create as much damage as possible on my current sets of trucks.

Damn! Well done! Beautiful grooves. So nice to see.
One hanger looks to be cracked. is that the reason for calling it a day on these?
The top washer on the other hanger so beautifully ground down also. The nut I assume has been changed at some point? The kingpin seems to be surprisingly mildly ground down.
Not related to these beautiful trucks, but I’ve always wondered, shouldn’t this thread be in Shoes & Gear instead of UWTB? Mods? Any comments?

about a month ago i rotated them cause i was damn near almost through the bushing seat from feebles, most of the time i was just sliding on the bushing, it felt awful lol so i rotated before i went straight though it

the area above the nut exposing the axel actually chipped away looooooooong ago which was concerning at first but it was all good. I hit axel in the front from crooks before anywhere else

It always depends on the curb for me. On mellow curbs they’re super easy. On steep curbs they drive me nuts. If anyone is having trouble find a mellow curb.

Just replaced them due to bent axle and also my wheel falling off 3x, after rethreading the axle each time didn’t want to push it much longer there. Wanted to ride them until they snapped ahh well. 1 and a half yrs

I've got two pairs of Indys which I wanted to ride until they cracked, but on which the axle threads eventually gave way and I had to abandon my plan. Both are significantly axled but, like you, I'm not gonna take the chance that my wheel falls off mid hill bomb.

Mine went nearly entirely through the hollow axle and never cracked, the entire hang gave. So you've got a ways to go safely I think

How many times do you all change your wheels per truck set. I feel like for me it’s a new set new trucks then new wheels at some point until the trucks are toasted. Usually 54-56 conical fulls/Og classics f4 spits. I’m a slappy skater btw. Curious to hear how many wheels you went thru in a truck’s life.
Nice af1 destruction. Love this thread. I feel like my af1 have been slow to grind down whereas the stage 4 Indys I’m on seem to be grinding down faster. Don’t mind the quicker wear the grind feels good and having deep grooves sooner is a plus.

id say im halfway through my trucks lifespan and im 2 sets of 54/56 f4's (exactly like you) in at the moment
if all goes well, i think itll take 4 sets total to kill them trucks. theyre about a year and some change old at this point, so 2 full years to kill them
im an atv for context. ledges, transition, rails & curbs. you name it, i skate it

I love super tiny wheels for slappy combos, so I usually just like to do 1 set of wheels per set of trucks. I end up usually just switching wheels because I am messing around with the setup and want to try something different. I actually used a set of 55mm Bones STF wheels down to like 45mm that i took across 2 sets of trucks!
that set of indy titaniums I rode from October until June while also riding a set of 8.75 Aces on my rails board that I have almost axled as well. I unfortunately left that axled setup at the spot like the day after I posted that photo and then I started a new set of thunder 148s June 1st and I have almost axled those already too. I have started riding the nose just to try and get more wear on everything and getting my first nice switch groove going too! cant wait to post those 2 trucks and thne get a new set of 151s to replace the Aces.

Ace classics 44 from before af1 came out. On af1 now. Wish they had 8.38 af1
Retired these because the front top bushing is splitting and the trucks are getting looser without being able to tighten them. Gonna give them to a friend that wants to try skating so passing them along.

What trucks axle the quickest? I was looking at some ventures and they seem to have the least amount of meat to protect the axle. This is a quick observation so no way the absolute truth. Anyone measure this and have a number?

Aces have a lot more meat than venture/thunder. But ace classics grind down super fast because of the soft metal, so you're still kinda right.
Just checked, thunders and ventures seem to have the same amount of metal above the axle, only about 5mm.

Really hard and sharp metals will cut into the hanger aluminum like that. The skatepark ledges at North Hollywood park(and others) have a slight inside bevel to them where the concrete has worn away and will do this to my trucks. I hate grinding them because it does this shit and it looks funny to me. I’m assuming they’re probably grinding something similar

What exactly causes a truck to crack? Is it due to landing drops with a smaller amount of metal on the truck? Or just from grinding certain things? I always love the way it looks but it’s never happened to me
-

For some who grind through like that, it is just the sheer wear of the truck, more than any heavy weight, hard landing or anything else.
That said, I do know some trucks break more weirdly than others (not including ti axles with all their issues), but gradually grinding through the axle, it weakens the material around it to the point where it just can't hold up anymore, sometimes bends so the hanger is still attached with the wheel hard pressed on the board, other times it just snaps off and goes flying.

Little explanation of how it looks like they’re not as worn down that I posted in the setup thread:
I always axle the back truck in the same spot. It never goes all the way across. Lots of frontside grinds, 5-0’s, 50-50’s(both backside and frontside lock in on my heel), feebles/smiths, and maybe 4 total sw crooks. The hanger cracked about a week before the hollow axle cracked. It bent all the way down and I just kept skating it until it broke
I skate a lot of street, but what I really love to skate is transition. I love grinding just as much as flipping my board
I don’t have a macro lens but this iPhone pic shows a bit more of the wear on the hanger where you can see the axle
(https://i.ibb.co/9nfT8bY/IMG-094.jpg)
I set them up on April 10th, so just under 9.5 months of skating did them in. I’m already working in my next set of Thunder hollow lights
