I know. Like I said, I liked all of their street parts (particularly Sasquatch). I think one of the big differences - what I think makes them park hacks - is that they aren't associated with any particular scene or spots. I know a lot of people will argue with this, but I think that all of the best skateboarders had, like, a home base. Carroll had EMB; Welsh had Pier 7; Stevie had Love Park and so on. Now the default is the Berrics, and to film a video you just travel around with some Nike filmer. It's boring. Those guys are boring, even if they do have ninja feet.
[close]
Its a different game now. The days of hanging out skating a plaza downtown in a city all day are over.
The irony, of course, is that people like Shane who are blowing up skating through Nike and ESPN are a big part of what is killing the downtown plaza scene. People don't think to connect the dots - the more kids skating, the fewer spots there will be. Cities where skating is not as big yet still have good scenes. Just ask PJ Ladd about Boston.

I'm not hating on Cory and Shane's street skating. Like is said, I like their parts. It's just a different vibe - more robotic, less about the city and spot selection, and all about getting stuff that's NBD. But, hey, I'm an urban designer, so this kind of shit probably matters more to me than to most people.

there's nothing robotic about cory or shane.
they both are creative & have great trick selection.

shane isn't some contest kid. he killed maloof, didn't win because
of some dumb rules & didn't sweat it.

urban design is ruining skateboarding. spots being built unskateable.

Sorry to burst you bubble, but kalis' skating has never been praised for his spot selection. 90% of his footage is at love, and the rest is at spots people skate regularly.

as far as shane not having a "headquarters" (nigga ,are you serious? these people are skateboarders not super villians) he might not, but he still skates a shitload of the sames spots in a lot of his parts. That means he probably goes to skate those places often, even when not filming. Now that think of it, a lot of people skate a lot of local spots around them. Most people (on slap, not actual skateboarders) actually say those dudes are boring, because they spend most of their day skateboarding instead of looking for shitty spots.

Heh heh... I've actually heard of a couple contractors that skated that were hired to build this building and they built it to be skateable on purpose. I can't remember where this was at, but I remember hearing about it and laughing and being proud of them for some odd reason.

creativity is about more than thinking up the most complicated tech trick. I don't know. I like them both; I just get more of a robot vibe from their parts. For example, they could do more goof-around tricks.

and, yes, urban design is ruining skateboarding. just wait until landscape urbanism moves from the Harvard GSD to the real world. oh, god, every skate spot will be covered with plants.

The only way to be creative is to do wallrides and 5-0 180's

yeah, well, a lot of skateboarders from my generation went into architecture/urban design. I don't know what this generation will do when they realize they can't make a living skateboarding. design warehouses, I guess, or become brand managers under the general managers at Nike.

I mean, Kalis can tell you himself, but as far as I can tell, he chose fucking cities, not just spots. Like, he moved around from SF to chicago to Philly to barcelona. that's cool, if you ask me. that's also why I give Stefan J credit for moving to Brooklyn.

But I actually laughed out loud at your super villains comment. touche.

Is them skating local spots not them skating their respective cities? Why do people get extra credit for moving around? is there something wrong with actually enjoying where you live and staying there?

Moving around shows adaptability, I think, to some people. It shows you can break out of the norm and go to unfamiliar places and still rip. That's the best theory I have on that one.

I just said the same thing about him being known for skating entire cities that are overlooked, but really? you think nobody skates brooklyn?

If you haven't been anywhere else, yes  there is something wrong with that. See the fucking world, get away from the perspective that surrounds you, live in a different city at least for a year just to get perspective on where you are from.
You desperately need it too. You are stuck in the LA moron mindset.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”
I quit skating for a time due to piling out

you are just as lame to the people who you think are lame

prolly lamer

how can a person be so focused on shit they dont like

thats like a fucking a fat bitch and complaining bout her extra bellies

the main perk about sponsored skating

aside from free shit

is to skate with different people at different places

you cant grow if you never leave your area

daewon is not the norm

but bet your favorite dipset album he will skate a curb in kentucky and have more fun than prod did at street league

I'm on the east coast now, but I used to live in Hancock Park and skate USC every other day (I skated Venice/Santa Monica on my off days - call it my home base, if you will).

There's nothing wrong with traveling, but  saying"oh this guy is cool because he moved" is stupid to me. I would rather see someone Kill all their local spots, and keep progressing, than seeing some lame dude do 5-0 180's all over the world.

Me and Charles Waldheim coming for dat ass skateboarding.   And we might bring Corner in when we want to get real freaky.

anyways, here the City designers are putting small spots throughout the city. a ledge here and there.  kind of sneaking them in.

Most people seem to like skateboarders in their work.  it is getting used in appreciated.  In my experience from going to public consultation meetings it is the public who hate the idea of skating.  They can't stand something that doesn't need coaches or locker rooms.

No, I'm pretty sure he has base in an inactive volcano where he is working on an experimental flip trick, that when he busts it out at the next Battle of the Berrics, will give him the power to control the weather and bring the world to its knees. He may have been thwarted this time, but he'll be back and then you will all rue the day you doubted him.
