Title: Favorite spots?
Post by: Ronald Wilson Reagan on August 02, 2008, 03:16:50 AM
This one isn't really about the industry or any of that shit, what are the best skatespots you've skated, past or present?
Heres some that stick out in my head:
Junipero school in SF- its the one with the pyramid shaped thing that people do grinds into from the top. Its gone now, but it was so unique and fun. I still think of tricks I wish I could do there.

Art Institute, Chicago- Perfect marble benches, thigh high marble ledges, marble ground, and a six stair. Lines for days, shaded with trees and off to the side so  if you entered the right way, you could stay all day. So many full summer days spent there. Its nobbed now

Post office, downtown Chicago- Nice marble benches and ground. Its not necessarily the best spot, its just classic. Still there, and when I get out to Chicago, just rolling through gives me so many great youthful memories.

Amoco building/Aon center, Chicago-  Before it was the ultimate bust it was amazing. Crazy stacked up marble slabs that made all sorts of unique gaps, ledges, and manual pads. Stairs of all sizes, some with decent handrails. marble banks that you could do tricks into. The most famous things there were these handicapped rails that you could skate off of a marble runway- Kalis switch smiths one in the bonus section of the dc video. There is a super gnarly gap there that Jamie Thomas frontside 180'd in Welcome to Hell, we used to look at it in disbelief. Its capped, but from time to time some of it gets unknobbed by some ninja ass skate spot liberators. The security guards are gnarly there, and will try and literally capture you, so when you see them, run!

3rd and army- most people hate this spot, but its got so much to offer. Shitty ledges that you can get used to if you try hard enough, a new flatbar, some tranny.... whatever, we all know this one.

City Hall, Philly- Never skated love, but my sister moved to Philly a couple years ago and I got to skate City Hall. So amazing. Its fucked now, but Philly is still one of the most amazing skate towns ever.

Washington St. Park, SD- The only reason to go to San Diego. I hate that town, but I'll deal with it just to skate that park. I love DIY, and its my favorite DIY park so far (I've skated fdr, bordertown, channel street, and the landfill bowl). Everything is super gnarly, and pretty much every transition has at least 6 inches of vert on it. Contrary to popular belief, I found the locals to be pleasant, all around good guys.

Anybody skate any of these? Anybody got some spots of their own to add?

Los Medanos College in Pittsburg, CA: A small town in the Bay Area that has a lot of stuff to skate, a two-flat-four, a seven, a five, a five stair handrail that's flat, a ledge that connects to a bigger ledge with a drop, great for grinds/slides. my favorite spot of all time. shame that it's a bust now. my friend got arrested there. if you plan on skating there only go on sundays, because there's school monday-saturday.

don't have any to add cause i'm just a shit australian kid with nothing to offer but i would love to skate 3rd and army, man you gotta have high expectations if you're not satisfied with that.
i would love to skate the twin cities in minnesota, the spots i see in the boondoggle montages make me cream.
any spot with a bunch of ledges i would be satisfied with. i've never really skated a perfect ledge outside a skatepark, if i have it gets wrecked by bikers, people make it unskateable or its a total bust.
i'm gonna move to san jose one day for their spots! looks great there, not too mention everyone there.

2003 Downtown Winston-Salem: The low, six stair Bridge Rail was here (Scuba Steve nose slides it in Really Sorry), as well as several marble ledges and whatnot all around the big buildings. The best ledge, and consequently the biggest bust, was GMAC. There was a two stair you could do a trick up, then room for a flat ground trick, followed by the most perfect marble planter on the planet. If you get caught skating GMAC today, you will get arrested. The rest of the spots are either skate stopped or shitty nine stairs.

A&T University: It's a historically black campus in Greensboro, NC, and so a lot of the students are less uptight about skating than others -- university police will probably get you eventually, but usually they'll just tell you to leave. If you like stairs, this spot is amazing due to the sheer volume of perfect skate-able sets of varying sizes -- some have handrails, and there is also the occasional ledge or two. The best rail here is a low, round seven stair rail.

The ghetto banks- birmingham alabama. place was nuts, wonderful tranny in the middle of the fucking projects. it was exhilirating having to watch your back and feet at the same time. that spot is legendary.

Government plaza-mobile, alabama. perfect at night. cops don't bother you, wonderful banks, knee-high circular manny pads, perfect hips, and it flows for days.

the warehouse aka. "the ghetto" lol. -fairhope alabama.

the warehouse was my favorite until the city built an actual "park" and the local authorities made the owner of the warehouse post no trespassing signs and kick kids out. something about insurance. the owner was cool as hell with us skating there and we all contributed to making it THE spot to skate. it flowed so well. now we have to settle for the shitty concrete park that nobody cares about with a shitty pyramid and no flow.

This is my favorite spot
(http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y6/sizbroo/Sick%20skate%20pictures/FredGall3.jpg)

You can skate the top stair into the bank, skate the big 3 (if you are lame), skate it as a hip, or a gapped hip, over and into the main bank and it has a lot of flow for stupid lines.  Never a bust, and in an area where everytime you go, you see something funny, or weird or out of the ordinary.

it can be see at 1:16 in this clip.

South bank in London....
Durham courthouse... haven't been in a good while though.

I don't know what people call it, but in downtown Charlotte there's a a long ledge, and it gaps out to another one. It got knobbed so you can't gap to grind the 2nd one..... but you can manual the whole thing or whatever. Pretty much anything in Charlotte is really fun.

and dixies is a fun ledge to skate.

city hall/love/municipal building: growing up skating this one block radius pretty much defined everything i love about skating still.
musee d orsay in paris: banks, wallies, amazing benches and perfect flatground.
ABC ledges in staten island: i don't even need to explain why this place is amazing.
University ledges in paris: kind of a low key spot but if you end up skating this you will experience a small sliver of heaven.
Welfare building in washington DC: such a cool fucking obstacle. so hit or miss though, i hate when i go out there and dont get more than a collective 5 minutes there.
cecil: as much as it sucks getting stuck there, it doesn't suck getting stuck there. the chill spot.
tempe skate park in arizona: ok its a skatepark but if you ever wonder why it seems so many people come out of arizona, just remember they grow up skating this thing everyday. you could learn anything there.

as for some of the spots you guys have mentioned, i went to the durham courthouse recently. there is still the one bench there, and it is really fun, but not really worth the gnarly bust factor. this spot was probably fucking AMAZING in it's prime though. i agree with you on 3rd and army gipper, i remember going there and not liking it, but getting used to it and loving it. if you're ever in philly again we should meet up and skate.

Probably the most blown out and overexposed spot of all time, but Pier 7 was amazing and I'd probably be content to skate that place forever.

Me and some friends were the first people to wax up bummy town so it could grind! Its fun as fuck, but by the end of a session your board is shredded by that rough ground. I only go there when my board is basically done anyway.

-And I agree with you on the pier bipsmound. Overblown, overexposed, and I don't even like manuals for the most part, but I used to have so much fun at that spot, and I still can't explain it.

I'm from Norway. Was visiting Croatia once and met some local skaters. They were really nice and took me too some spots. This spot was in a city called Split. It was by this big statue of a guy with a golden toe, everybody who walks by rubs the golden toe of the statue.

Brooklyn Banks are so much fun.  don't go to NYC often but it is a must whenever i do go.

pissed i didn't make it out to AZ this summer like i was planning, i was definitely looking forward to hitting up Tempe and Pecos Parks.   Pecos is probably my favorite park i've ever been to.

The only famous spot I've ever been to was Venice Beach, and it wasn't that great.

I went on a cruise with my family circa 2004. I forget where we were supposed to stop, but it got rerouted to Toulin, France. There were beautiful ledges everywhere, and I ollied a 3 set into a crowd of cops that were stoked on me skating. I also skated in a trainyard that had a bunch of chains between poles of varying height. The ground was paved and the rails were sunk into the ground. It was kind of sketchy, but that made it even cooler. I was definitely not good enough at skating to appreciate all of the spots, and I'm probably still not good enough, but Toulin had the best spots I've ever seen in real life.

my favorite spot ever by far.  i spent every weekend there for about 3 years.  i almost cried when I drove up and saw them tearing it down.

New Orleans:

The Pancakes.  Its a bunch of circular stairs that make little gaps from one set to another.  its been in a bunch of videos over the years.  It was super fun before the entire homeless population of New Orleans decided to start living there.

Sunbasket.  It was the local junk slab and the first place that I skated outside of my shitty little town.  It was also the first place that I saw all of my first skate idols, that would eventually become some of my best friends.

Baton Rouge:

Tranny Walls.  Huge brick vert walls.  Super fun.  Never skated another place like it.

Centroplex.  The best skatespot ever before bmxers fucked up all of the ledges.  It was like our version of Embarcadero.  Smooth brick tiles, ledges for miles, dozens of sets of stairs (3s with ledges going off, 5s, 6s, 8s, 12s, 13s), a double set in front, gaps over rails, gaps over sand, a bump to bar, metal police barricades, and even an underground parking garage with ledges and waxed curbs for when it rained.   The only thing it was missing was air conditioning.

I skated there once. Super fun. The only complaint I have ever heard about it is that the banks are too hard to do much on for some people. Really though, its about as tough as any sort of steep bank situation, and a lot of fun.

I'll expand on one thing diabolik said... everything in downtown Baton Rouge from the Centro up to the Capitol (the walls being in there) is fucking amazing. Baton Rouge is one of the best cities I've ever skated in... the Centro is/was kind've like Louisiana's own EMB, Sal Barbier's got some stuff he's done there over a decade ago that's still legend shit. Also, downtown BR is always changing, and its been getting new shit to skate consistently.

Right next to the actual downtown is the Cat Banks, which has been a solid skatespot since I was cruising over the hips there before I was a teenager... now it has some new DIY concrete, ledge and flatbar stuff, so it's even better.

Our Dreamland park is my default place to skate, and I love it because that thing's there because of work some of us did with the Louisiana legislature, and because of the efforts of my best friend and a few others on a local city council level. The park has completely altered the skating here. For years there were 4-6 of us that skated together, hitting what we had, now we've got an amazing place and you can easily scrounge up a dozen or more people to go session with if they're not already there.

Another hat tip to the Brooklyn Banks... when I went a few years ago, they had an angle-iron edged box at the very top of it, and that shit was fun as all hell. The column is fucking great too... just wallying off it into the bank is fun for days.

FDR: The big over vert pocket, the big wall next to it with the burrito thing sticking out, the line up of round bowls, the big column, and even the little mini ramp over there are each classic. The concrete boobs are fun too.

New Orleans: the white jersey barrier wall right next to the ferry landing at the River Walk. It's not an epic spot or anything, it's just a little concrete wall that you can ollie over from one side, ride like a ramp from the other, and it can be treated like a rough ledge as well. Diabolik mentioned the pancakes too... never skated anything like 'em. Tons of stuff has gone down there, and they're one of the most unique places ever.

If this is the bridge on Webster Avenue, then I love this spot even though the traffic can make it very sketchy. I work about 3 blocks away from it and skate it whenever I have a chance.

I really love the pool at Wilson Park. I wish I had one in my backyard (or had a backyard).

Montreal - but specifically,
Peace Park, which is all marble ledges, and Parc la Fontaine, which is the raddest meetup spot.  Marble benches with a slight curve and awesome flat ground, and the Art Gallery downtown which also has ledges, stairs, and manual pads of the marble variety.

The Big O is also there but I don't really skate tranny enough to love that thing expect for historical value.

it's in louisville, right down the street from the skatepark.
o haha thanks, I thought it was in the chicago land area. I'll definately keep it in mind if I decide to go to the Louisville skatepark.

denver skatepark

that park is one of my favorites. ledges, tranny, good ground, and lit up.

my favorite spot is the dwp ledges. ive gone there prob 5 times and each time i got kicked out even before i got onto the walkway. i finally got to skate it for an hour about a month ago and it was all that it was cracked up to be.

there's a new plaza in east la that is near perfect, just no lights.

i really liked flushing meadows, even though there's not too much to it. maybe it was just being there.

one place i want to go to before i die is macba and universitat.

The 6 stair with the hubba is a fun spot. Its The University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth. The whole campus is sick to skate except for that 85% of the place has the worst ground ever. I cringe every time I see Justin Brock fall on that front board on that long rail because the ground is basically pebbles stuck in cement. If you ride bigger wheels and push hard your fine, but if you fall your pretty much going to rip your clothes and bleed.

Another fun spot, and my personal favorite is called Metal Grind. Its a pier where fishing boats dock up and there's a metal edged ledge that runs down the length of the pier. Its a perfect ledge except that if you fuck up a trick, your boards going in the drink. Only about 30 feet of it doesn't have water on the other side, which is fine.

Everything here is either Marble (ground) or Granite (ledges).

There used to be the most perfect handrails down the stairs that were two square rails next to each other and were about 8 " above knee high at the top.

If you ever come and skate here look under the building and see which state officer is working, if it is black officer "DO NOT SKATE IT", he is the only officer who cares (and happens to be black), other than him no one really gives a shit.  You can only skate at night and on the weekends and holidays.

There is also another amazing marble spot at the bottom of the hill from the State Capital it is call Bicentennial Mall (a state park), and is the biggest bust ever, do not even try b/c it isn't worth it.  Other than there the cops don't seem to care about people skating in Nashville, TN.

Enjoy

I really haven't been to too many places in my skateboarding,so all my favorite spots are my hometown spots, first up is The Everson Museum. (http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f4/OGstatus315/COMMPLAZA.jpg)
Basically, its like our Love Park, when we'd get kicked out of a spot the cops would tell us to goto the Eve. They have everything, high ledge, low ledge, low to high, the 2 block gap, the pink ledge gap, a few other gaps, curbs, manual pads, super smooth ground, and when the fountain is drained in the fall you have a whole new area to skate, not to mention the sculptures work as great skateable objects. The Everson used to let us skate there no problem because they considered skateboarding an art form, but recently they put up no skating signs and put skate stoppers on the ledges but there easy to pop off. I spent most of my youth skating here.

We also have a few main spots like the Herald Journal rails, the Mony 7 stairs, the Fleet Bank ledges, Inner Harbor(make sure you have a board goalie because if you fuck up and your deck goes in the water, its gone forever), Marshall Street, The SU campus has a bunch of stuff from giant hills to bomb to rails of all sizes to a giant marble plaza but you gotta be quick there, security doesn't play. Its also nice to skate up there due to all the hot ass college girls. We also have a secret school spot only a few know about tucked away in the extreme ghetto, nothing but ledges of all sizes, a nice grass gap, and a 5 stair, plus this crazy ass manual pad. We have some ill spots in the 3 but the Everson will always be the greatest to me, like I said, its like our Love Park or EMB.

UCI. All the famous spots have been knobbed but they're nothing I would be able to skate anyways. On the plus side, they're still building which means new spots.

Hahaha, I've dealt with that very officer. Went on a trip with a friend almost two years ago to Nashville and ended up there the last night. Place is too perfect. The guy came charging full sprint shouting at the top of his lungs.

That was the only shitty experience the whole trip though. Everyone in Nashville is so down to earth. Met a really cool skate-dad at the Franklin plaza at 6 in the morning who treated us to burgers and beer. Also while skating a randomspot, some guy approached us and ended up hooking us up with free hockey tickets instead of giving us the boot like we expected.

I'm from Norway. Was visiting Croatia once and met some local skaters. They were really nice and took me too some spots. This spot was in a city called Split. It was by this big statue of a guy with a golden toe, everybody who walks by rubs the golden toe of the statue.

Ha, we met there, I remember you guys. Never though that I will meet slap pal in the flesh, world is really a small place, especially for skateboarders :).

I just remembered about another favorite spot, this perfect sidewalk bump that was right down the street from my house. It was so fucking perfect, and it was on a hill too so you could hit it with some decent speed. I went cruising through my neighborhood right before I moved to Atlanta and I found out that they flattened it, a part of me from middle school died.

Wouldn't it be relatively easy to chip away those bricks, though? Seems like sort of a shitty job of skatestopping something.
Yeah, but there is still the reminants of the mortar or cement or whatever that need to be like buffed out or whatever. It can be done, but it'll be a pain in the ass.

^ Never been there, but some good friends of mine went last winter.  Odawg (who is a professional photog), Russ Milligan, and my friends Kevin Lowry and Jason Gordon all skated it.  Jason had this photo published in SBC I believe.

I can't tell about Portugal as a whole but Lisbon has like 4 or 5 spots IF that, when I went there I skated Alfama every single day. The ground is perfect and those ledges make such a great noise. I also skated Praça da Figueira (picture below), but I didn't like it much.

Favorite spot is where the homies are at. Backyard minis, the BQE junk spot and mashing through midtown are fun. Maybe FDR as an all time favorite...especially if it's bone-dry, not too crowded and you got some brews.

Junipero school in SF- its the one with the pyramid shaped thing that people do grinds into from the top. Its gone now, but it was so unique and fun. I still think of tricks I wish I could do there.

3rd and army- most people hate this spot, but its got so much to offer. Shitty ledges that you can get used to if you try hard enough, a new flatbar, some tranny.... whatever, we all know this one.

Junipero was definitely a fun spot and harder to skate than the videos make it look.   3rd and Army is also fun when it's not windy and crowded.   I really liked skating the SF Federal building banks.  I'd catch the bus from Powell and Geary to Wallenburg... skate that place then bomb down the hill back into town.  The new Potrero park looks really good but I haven't skated that yet.

I also agree with Washington St. being a San Diego highlight.  That place is rough and hard to skate which makes it fun.

Looks like the Sneath Ditch is out in the middle of nowhere.

It doesn't exactly look like a highly populated area, and its not exactly prime land to build something.

Who did it bother so much that, someone had to order it to be skatestopped  ???

Chances are the next spot whomever skates there, would be in a more densely populated area. Seems kind of counter-productive  :P

Never got to skate the sneath ditch. Went there about a month ago and the anti graff paint was still wet. We missed out on the session by a single day!

And it's right next to a gold course, right before the parking lot. Maybe if people skated the ditch in slacks and polos they'd be cool with it.

one side is a hill you can bomb
the view is awesome,
and theres like 10 other skatespots within a 5minute skate

there's now a pretty fun cement quarter pipe where that wooden wallride thing is in those pictures. this is just the big section too, you can walk through the tunnel in the second picture and find a bunch of banks, ledges, curbs, etc. state troopers apparently come through occasionally and smash shit up, but i've been there numerous times and i've never been kicked out or seen any signs of police activity whatsoever.

basically, SO MUCH FUN

Foundation in atlanta was super fun while it was there. pretty nice understanding with the cops, fun locals, good times.

Emory in east atlanta has a bunch of good spots, too. plenty of ledges, sets and speed bumps that have like a tabletop to them, i.e. you can clear the flat. Bust factor pretty low, if you can show them a student ID they will be cool with you. Best thing about this school is the elevation change on campus. Lots of hills and lines for days!

never been to these spots but i want to:

shenzhen china wave spot. oh and also that brick gap in china that BA boardslides and Pfanner nollies. you know what im talking about

and this hubba which i think is somewhere in Germany. saw it in an old Puzzle a while back and it's always looked so nice and straightforward.

1.) Ben Lomond Skate Park
Little basic park in the Santa Cruz mountains with a great bowl and my favorite funbox ever (bank-4'-5' flat-bank with a ledge on one side and rail on the other). I haven't found another that is as much fun, not small, not too big, and perfect for all kinds of tricks. It's perfect for high 360 flips and the only funbox I have been ever to successfully pop high nollie flips over. All others I go flying forward and my board goes backwards. I miss this place.
BEN LOMOND SESSION (http://vimeo.com/10484311)

2.) The Tenderloin (San Francisco)
Mellow hills, the bump on the west side of west side of Leavenworth/Golden Gate Ave that if you hit right can make you fly insanely fast down to Civiv Center Plaza where there's the fountain (gap, tons of great manny possibilities if you don't mind the 5' drop at the end, the Ramondetta Gap off the little ledge (I could never hit it right and make all the way across the bricks and over the 3 step), right by the infamous library, and a couple miles skating up Market to the DLXSF shop. Lots of good skating memories, but the Tenderloin is also where I scored my oxy before I cleaned my life up. Between skating and trying to sneak into the Carls Jr bathroom to smoke OC, the memories are not all great but there's so much to skate.

3.) Austin TX.
House park, Brushy Creek park, Round Rock park, downtown, the ditches. (image below is the hidden gem by my house. I've already mapped out where I want to build the manual pad, tombstone, and stick in a flat bar. With a little $ and some help it can happen, this place is awesome.
