board sizes:which one and why
« on: July 30, 2009, 01:57:59 PM »
I know we seem to have one of these every so often but with things changing so fast in skating I am always curious about peoples preferences and why. Does length play any roll in your choice? would you rather companies were more specific about the true length and wheel base dimensions? Does the system element uses to differentiate boards by assigning them numbers work?Should other companies adopt something similar? I just know that I like a certain shape and with deluxe you never know what you'll get sometimes, regardless of what they tell you the size will be.

I always skate an 8 just because it's always available at skateshops but I've been thinking of switching to 8.25.

I skate 8.5s. No real reason behind they're just what feel comfortable. As far as length goes, I really hate short boards.

Fuck...I am still stuck in the era when everyone was riding 7.5s. I go with 7.6's just cause that is the smallest size I can find at shops.

7.75. If they're less wide, I find I break them too easily.  If they're more wide, I find it takes too much effort to flip.

I have a 8.5"and a 9". I have size 12 feet, I don't do flip tricks and I think a wider board is more stable for the type of skating I do.

8 because that's what my trucks fit (inset trucks or sticking out trucks look and feel gross) and 8 feels best for my size 11 feet, anything over or under is awkward for me. I don't think I've ever once measured the length of a board.

usually 7 3/4. i have smallish feet and so it feels just wide enough but not too big. i set up an 8 a week back and while the board feels good, the trucks now feel and look too skinny for it- feels shaky. not sure about length, but probably right around 31". what about shape preferences? i've always liked kind of a squarer board.

Yeah i prefer a wider nose and tail, not as square as some creature boards but drehobls 8.125 has a nice wide nose and tail. Also i noticed I like the nose and tail to be almost the exact same length, less than 1/4 inch between the two seems to work best. I change my mind a lot though, and some times a certain shape feels better and then the next day I hate it.

skated 7.75s for a long time but 7.85 feel better. skating an 8 right now and it's cool. as far as shape, the Carl Shipman reissue that Stereo did was my favorite shape, skated 4 or 5 of them. round nose but not too round with a great tail.

8.5. Sometimes I'll go down to an 8, but that's as small as I'll go. I like them bigger because, well like everyone else said I just feel more comfortable on them.

7.75 for sure. I recently snapped a 7.5 and cracked a 7.63. So I figured it was time to step it up other wise I would of stayed with smaller boards. I won't skate a board that's length is past 31.5. Crail and DLX boards are pretty much all i ride.

8.0 because I'm a size 12 and it feels good on both street and tranny.

8's just feel so right for some reason.
I've actually been thinking about stepping up to an 8.25. That's the size a friend of mine skates and whenever I ask to try his board out I barely even feel that much of a difference when I'm skating it. People say that stepping up from an 8 to an 8.25 is very noticeable, but it felt exactally the same to me except it was a tad bit more sturdy and comfortable.

7.85-8.25. I skate all sorts of shit, sometimes it feels like wider boards are better, but they make trying hard flatground tricks tougher. Too skinny and it feels like I am on my toes the whole time I skate, I need to be able to sit my foot on the board comfortably. In terms of length, I'm not sure on numbers, but I like boards longer. Nothing is worse than getting a board that is too short, I'm scared my foot will come off the front and I'll roll my ankle anytime I ollie.
Are you a kook? If you would say this, the answer is “YES”

8 or 8.125 x 32 is my favorite.  Mellow concave, pointy nose and tail.

8 or 8.25 feels the best for me....I usually try to find boards with the same shape also.

Im currently riding an 8.125 x 31.75. For me length seems more important than width. I dont care about the width as long as its between 8 and 8.25. (although i havent actually had wider than 8.25 and dont know if i like it yet) The length has to be 32 or longer. I have long legs and when i try to get a good solid flick and catch with anything less than 32 I over flip it and it looks horrible or i primo. So i hate my current boards length. If you have a short board your flip tricks with be fast and low. If you have a longer board then it flips slower and pops higher allowing you to catch it better and have a more solid better flick.

I have been skating 8's for the last 3 years. I used to skate 7.75's and 8's feel more comfortable since you can put more foot on the board and ride easier. anything smaller feels like a tech deck.

7.75 - 8.00  Usually go with a 7.8 or something in the middle for the best of both worlds. Im going to skate my first 8 soon so ill see how it feels

7.75. Usually anything between 7.63 - 7.85 will do just fine. For length I go for 31.5 and up.

it goes back and forth. I've been riding 7.62 with steep concave, but recently I like a bigger board, 7.75 with less concave.
