The CIA, who at that point in time were very off the leash, because of the Bay of Pigs massacre, worked the hit through their contacts in the Dallas mob. Kansas City, the seat of mob power in the US, signed off on the cooperation likely due to Bobby's crusade to destroy their business ventures. Corrupt local law enforcement helped to launder the physical evidence so that what was presented to the public would pass a sniff test. The scale of the crime however necessitated a full blown Federal investigation which got us the suspect findings of the Warren Commission and the House Select Committee and the continuing public distrust in the confirmations of those committees.

Senior year history elective was a class called Crime and Violence that everyone took and Rush to Judgement was one of the books we were assigned to read. I can't help it, they got me early on this one. I've also been to Dealey Plaza but this would have been in the early 90s and nothing was marked. It was just another piece of Dallas landscape.

My grandfather was a secret service agent during that time. He died when I was 5 and i weirdly didn’t find out about his job until I was 20, but I’m sure he would have known what the most likely scenario would have been.

I'm not a conspiracy theory guy.  But Tom O'Neil's book about Charles Manson veers into the history of mind control experiments......that could include the assassination of JFK.......I know it sounds wacko, even Tom O'Neil questioned the direction his research was taking him.

Kansas City, the seat of mob power in the US,

Huh? What?

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

I haven’t watched Casino in a long time, but was that where their connection was to East Coast in that movie?

In Casino specifically, the bosses running the skim are from "The Midwest" which, for the movie's purposes, is an amalgamation of Chicago and KC. The FBI gets wise to the skim op by bugging a KC grocery store the bosses work out of.

In reality, my understanding is that Kansas City was the location the really top guys operated from due to it's centralization. I haven't read it but there's a book called The Mafia and the Machine that can fill you in on the specific historical details.

EDIT: The Teamsters Pension Fund is what made them so juiced up. From the Wikipedia entry on Kansas City Crime Family:
"The new boss was now Nicholas Civella, who greatly expanded the family's rackets and forged alliances with families from other cities, making the organization very powerful. Civella used the Teamsters to fund casinos in Las Vegas."

Anthony Spilotro (the guy Pesci's character is based on), along with his crew were members of the Chicago Outfit. I would argue that at no point was the KC mob ever the strongest faction of the Italian mob. With the Commision the votes on major shit were equal, but I think the NYC families votes were always a bit more equal than everybody else's. They did start it all and had the most access to ports and international flights.
