My friend asked me at the park tonight "what's the deal with Julien?"
I didn't have an answer. Maybe style? I've heard he has nice bs ollies or something.

Watch any Julien footage ever, going back to Sick Boys, and none of it is dated. Dude never filmed a wack trick in his life. I'm not sure he ever did a wack trick. Always fast yet balanced, no matter how big or small the wheels/pants were of the era. No one else's oeuvre holds up the same way. There's no one career-defining part, but every clip, every photo holds its own. Less is more.

I don't know how long you been around in skating, but in general most people move away from what is hip at the moment, and towards a more timeless style of skating, which is much more about speed and movement. Julien is timeless skating incarnated!

I could be wrong but I don't think Cairo Foster was around until a few years later. First appearance I know of him is 411 ~97. maybe he was doing stuff like that before he was sponsored kind of thing but he also is a pretty top level pro too. he pushed the limits of skateboarding quite a bit himself in sf especially. put a lot of spots on the map.
i dont really understand how you dont like julien, he is the boss of anti hero, he is an amazing person to listen talk in John Cardiel's epicly laterd , not sure if you have seen that. he is just such a character. i dont think i could list all the small things he has done for skateboarding but I am fairly stoked on what he has done with anti hero and i really like the way he skates. i think it looks awesome and you can tell right away its him as soon as you see the way he moves.
i DO understand why people DONT like him , probably huge alchoholic, super negative all the time, probably feels entitled , empowers some fairly goofy behavior, im probably not the best to answer that either as i suffer from a lot of these exact same issues. maybe this is why i align with anti hero so much...

Who does he need to produce for? He’s never been exactly loaded up with sponsors, so it’s not like he’s milking anything. Never had a pro shoe, etc. he does anti hero and otherwise shirks the spotlight.

The aspect which I've come to respect is how many years he's spanned.....he's the same generation as Micke Reyes...look at that guy.....he's somehow fit in every generation. It's near impossible not to kook it at some point, his record is pretty flawless....

i would be interested to see the stats on how many of the people who feel positively about Julien Stranger are old enough to have been paying attention to skating during the peak of his pro career (early 90s). i didn’t start to really be aware of what was going on in skating until 2000/2001ish when i was about 10 years old, and i’ll admit, i’ve never quite understood the hype. there are a bunch of legendary skaters that did their most impressive stuff before i was around (Gonz, Henry Sanchez, Cardiel, Jason Lee, Javonte, Lavar, Pepe Martinez, even Natas, Frankie Hill, Matt Hensley, etc) that I like a lot and understand the hype around despite not witnessing personally, but Julien has always been a mystery for me. I’ve watched the parts too. Style is great but not mind-blowing (imo) and the tricks never stood out much to me (especially that gap to tailslide that he kinda just taps and falls out of it that everyone thinks is incredible)
anyways, would be interested to see how many of the people in this thread riding for Julien caught his heyday or if some of them went back and caught up and felt that strongly about his skating retroactively. anecdotally, most of the people in my age group (late 20s/early 30s) that i’ve ever talked to about Julien’s skating feel pretty similarly to me

I think it's like dude has a certain style that's remained timeless... I'm almost in my mid 20's and can say it took me until that slappy's love letter for me to get the full understanding of dude's being

Cairo? Welsh? What the fuck are you talking about? Completely different eras - the difference between 1992/3 and 1997/8 is probably bigger than the difference between 2003 and 2023. A completely altered skate universe.
I started skating in 2000 at 12 years of age, one of millions of pubescent boys to do so in the wake of THPS’s release. I remember one of the first TWS issues I got had the Vans ad with the pic of this noseblunt:

and, though it didn’t know it at the time, it sowed the seeds of much of my skate perception and general aesthetic sensibility. I was born to late for his prime, I never fully fucked with norcal barney culture and hellride ethos, but Julien always seemed like one of the absolute coolest guys to ever ride a board. It was immediately apparent to me. It’s fine if you don’t get it, but you shouldn’t say so outloud.

Skating has always straddled: ‘if you don’t know…you don’t know…’ and blatant progression. It’s 2023 too…at some point those old vids just don’t count as much….it’s the same as everything else in the world……

I'm in your age group and i still feel that julien is one of my favorite skaters.
I am also in this age group and agree with the missed notion. Neither like nor dislike Julien, but I can appreciate his contribution to skating via founding Anti-Hero. Was a huge TnT fan growing up, so I really liked the Anti-Hero shit in my early teens. I'm sure Julien is a great person to have a coffee or a beer with at 11:30 pm on a Tuesday. I'd shake his hand if I had the chance, but I'm not jerking the guy off.

i would be interested to see the stats on how many of the people who feel positively about Julien Stranger are old enough to have been paying attention to skating during the peak of his pro career (early 90s). i didn’t start to really be aware of what was going on in skating until 2000/2001ish when i was about 10 years old, and i’ll admit, i’ve never quite understood the hype. there are a bunch of legendary skaters that did their most impressive stuff before i was around (Gonz, Henry Sanchez, Cardiel, Jason Lee, Javonte, Lavar, Pepe Martinez, even Natas, Frankie Hill, Matt Hensley, etc) that I like a lot and understand the hype around despite not witnessing personally, but Julien has always been a mystery for me. I’ve watched the parts too. Style is great but not mind-blowing (imo) and the tricks never stood out much to me (especially that gap to tailslide that he kinda just taps and falls out of it that everyone thinks is incredible)
anyways, would be interested to see how many of the people in this thread riding for Julien caught his heyday or if some of them went back and caught up and felt that strongly about his skating retroactively. anecdotally, most of the people in my age group (late 20s/early 30s) that i’ve ever talked to about Julien’s skating feel pretty similarly to me
I feel like Underworld Element was a cool A-Team type team with a lot of thought and vision. Really, For Julien to go to that team at the time was even cool at the time. Julien was really smart creating a mythos around his character. He is top notch in my opinion and also hung with Hosoi and Dressen in Venice days. Dude did it all!

like maybe two years ago, were skating and i see a guy accross plaza that looks like him in vans, hiking backpack, skating w a second board in hand. go over to homie and say something bout it. we both dont think its him all alone. sure enough he comes over and hands a fresh 8.75 brian anderson board to the homie who was riding a 18 board. "here man take it, sell it if you need to, skate it, whatever you gotta do" we ask him to skate but he says hes going to Barcelona via train later that morning. could have been different day but 90% sure the fs noseblunt slide in fantastic voyage was that same day as he was wearing same fit. super chill guy. we chatted for a second and then he dipped. legendary 2 minute interation that lives forever
those types of stories, gestures.... you dont get Ronaldo just dropping by your local pitch to say hello and drop some boots off.

I started skating in 2000 at 12 years of age, one of millions of pubescent boys to do so in the wake of THPS’s release. I remember one of the first TWS issues I got had the Vans ad with the pic of this noseblunt:

and, though it didn’t know it at the time, it sowed the seeds of much of my skate perception and general aesthetic sensibility. I was born to late for his prime, I never fully fucked with norcal barney culture and hellride ethos, but Julien always seemed like one of the absolute coolest guys to ever ride a board. It was immediately apparent to me. It’s fine if you don’t get it, but you shouldn’t say so outloud.
