I'm moving to Vancouver, BC in the beginning of January, and I'm looking for some pointers on where to go skate, where good shops are located, quality bars etc.
I'm staying just a bit north of Antisocial, so if there is anyone living in the area who likes beers and skateboarding then shoot me a pm.
-
vancouver city EVERYTHING is capped so your stuck with gaps and manual pads ftmp
best skateshop is probably underworld on granville, right by the plaza train and stadium. there's a dope $1 pizza place by the apartments near the plaza, they also do turkish pies or some shit.
i'm hoping to get back out there in the spring, probably only afford a 200 sq foot studio in Delta though...
-
Antisocial is probably the best shop in Vancouver. It's the cool guy shop but it has the best product. Thats probably the best area for a skater to live. I live in New West. It's close to work and I can afford to own a way bigger place and its a 20min skytrain from Plaza but there's ten other parks in between. Theres a indoor ramp at http://www.sbcrestaurant.ca/gallery/ (http://www.sbcrestaurant.ca/gallery/) that's a good winter spot. Moving in Jan means you'll have to wait out the weather for 2-3 months for skate season. There's a bunch of bars in the area around antisocial. Pm me if you want when you arrive and you can get in on a session at the ramp or something. I'm just an average skater but skate with a bunch of flow bro's.
-
thanks! so is there not a single indoor park in the Vancouver area? Only SBC and some random garage thing I found on google (which didn't really look like much to skate). I'm pretty good at not skating during the winter months, but it's always nice to have the chance.
-
There's one in South Vancouver at Monke Skateboards https://www.facebook.com/monkeskateboard (https://www.facebook.com/monkeskateboard) but it's not very big. Theres also a some stuff at a couple of the distributers but they're invite only. A buddy of mine has a box that he brings to an underground parking garage with some curb manny pads. You kinda gotta make it happen for yourself during the winter. I couldn't even guess how many skateparks are in the lower mainland to skate come spring.
-
I've been wanting to move to Vancouver for a long time.
if you don't mind me asking, essal are you from the us? how are you able to move there? through work or school or something else?
-
School. Doing a post bachelor diploma thing for a year. So I basically have a student visa valid until early 2016. I'm Norwegian. I have no clue about getting a work permit, I guess that's a bit more work, especially if you do not have a job waiting for you there.
-
it's already been mentioned, but antisocial is pretty much the best place to go to in vancouver for skate goods. there is an insane amount of skateparks in vancouver, there will be one very close to where you're staying by the name of mt. pleasant (just off main and 16th). from your place if you head north towards science world, keep going a few blocks up and you'll find the plaza. there is no shortage of spots/parks to skate around here, and for the most part, people are pretty friendly.
-
Yea I feel like going back to school would be my only in at this point, are you going to Simon Fraser or UBC?
and definitely agreed about Antisocial, best shop, on a good day you'll catch McCrank in there
and if you're hungry theres a burrito spot across the street called Budgie's Burritos, owned by friends of Antisocial
Im from LA and hands down Budgies had some of the best burritos and tacos that ive ever had
-
Doing to Kwantlen down in Richmond. I don't mind the short commute, and I've had almost an hour of travel to school every day for my BA so I'm pretty used to it.
Thanks for the tip about the burritos, I love that stuff!
-
Hey essal, I live near where you're moving. PM'd you.

Garden city has a manual pad and ledge and is close to kwantlen...the weird park at Thompson if your expectations are low is fun too...it's a short bus ride....
The rent near where you live may be a bit pricey....

i live in van if you wanna skate

that thompson park looked weird as hell from a little googling. it's like they didn't even try to get shit leveled, so they just put a lot of stuff at 45 degrees instead. looked kinda fun actually.
rent is a bit high, but then again, it's cheaper compared to over here and I wanted to live with some people my age who aren't all introverts. the amount of "we prefer that you're quiet; no visitors, no parties, no overnight stays" places I found and offers I received, I'm pretty happy about paying a bit more to be able to be myself..
-
Thompson is a cool concept, just a bunch of weird shapes in an open area....the shapes are just not the best....it's relatively level....
For food around kwantlen I'd check out izumiya, it's a Japanese grocery store on the other side of lansdown...
The other shops in Vancouver you might want to check: BLVD on commercial, Skull skates in Pt. Grey on way to UBC, Menu in gastown....
Leeside is covered but often flooded.....
UBC is a good spot to hit the park and go street skating....

ANTI SOCIAL / MENU / BLVD ARE ALL RAD SHOPS.
Yes are ledge game is low.. but there is still a bunch of good gems.
Tons of good parks and little spots all within bus distance .. or travel a bit for more good stuff !
You'll be stoked

Mt Pleasant is a rad place to live! Highly recommend this sushi place on main and 15th called nikkyu, they've got good food and $8 pitchers if you're into that sort of thing. Nightlife is pretty good in that area with The Biltmore and The Fox in Mt Pleasant and 303 Columbia in gastown hosts a weekly skate night every thursday.
Luckily vancouvers been blessed with some pretty great parks, especially once you venture out of the city into the suburbs. parks like Queensborough, Poco, and Cloverdale are some of the best spots outside of Van and are pretty much only 30-45 min outside of the city.
Pm me if ya ever need anything always down to help out someone new to town!

did you make it over here yet?
-
Haha Tracer tell me when you're in Delta for a North Delta sesh. Anti-Social and Blvd Skateshop are the cool guy shops, Authentic Board Supply in Surrey usually has good deals. Plaza is a fun park, but the ledges are like street, rough granite. Bonsor by Metrotown is fun, Chuck Bailey, Cloverdale and North Delta in Surrey/Delta are great too. There's lots of good spots you just have to hunt.

is the north delta park still looking good these days? i haven't been there for so long. fond memories of hauling ass from one side of the park to the other as a young buck to hit the bump to bar. wouldn't mind re-visiting that place.

Oh yeah, it's still glorious. The locs of my age have since passed on, but there's still the occasional ripper there. It's good because you basically get to shred the park while they stoner 16 year olds sit around in awe.

Love that park. The only down side is the rain has pitted the smooth cement and it now has the abrasive factor of pumice stone. Any skin that hits the ground will be swiftly removed. Since Chuck Bailey (right by the Gateway skytrain for out of towners) opened its been dead.

Which is weird because Delta is a 100x better for a street skater. I used to skate there every day, but the bus aint cheap to take every day. Cloverdale is way better then Chuck Bailey too. It's just full of fucking scooter kids.

Kick the scooter kids out?

Yeah then you get the Dad the size of a fucking buffalo kicking your ass, I'm good. There's way too many to kick out anyways.

ahh we have those in Portland too. Our parks have those rule signs so we point those out and the dads look sheepish afterwards and usually come back with the "they're only kids" retort and then walk away. The older ones usually get barked at when they're in the way.

yeah, you gotta be careful around the scooter kids out in surrey. you never know who'll go crying to their dad who turns out to be HA or some shit like that. i tend to hit those parks around 9am to avoid the crowds.

if you're hungry theres a burrito spot across the street called Budgie's Burritos
if vegitarian burritos could make you fat, I'd probably be a truckload by the time my visa runs out. this place was awesome.
been to the plaza twice, it's really nice to be able to skate outside in January. Last time I skated outside this early in year I was wearing thick wool underwear and only lasted an hour.
oh and I have an uncapped ledge right outside my apartment. I guess tracer was lying :(

When I decide to quit my current job I need to come to Vancouver with my skateboard on a skate mission. I need a week or so up there to skate all the parks and downtown spots. I also gotta try and hit the RDS shop just cause they're awesome. Got any nice manny pad or ledge spot recommendations?

the rds shop shut down around 2011. there are a few schools in north van with plenty of ledges to skate, ridgeway and queen mary, and the go to manny spot would be terry fox which is right in front of bc place. bc place is a few minutes skate from the plaza which has tons of pads and ledges to skate as well.
-
yoo fellow vancouver homies I was just wondering if anyone here knows were these spots are? looks like they got to be around east van I lived in the renfrew area for a few years but never came across any of them, any help would be greatly appreciated! figured I would just post up here instead of starting a new thread

not sure where the first one is, the second is knobbed and it's by dundas and victoria in east van, near the mcdonalds, the third is way south at like 46th and nanaimo or something, and the fourth i think is on like 10th by the hospital by granville

I meant their current place. I have talked to the designer there several times and I might be able to score a visit. Gotta hit him up about it though. All those spots sound sick! I can't wait to take a trip

Surrey, Langley and New West have great spots, they're just spaced out. DT can be such a struggle sometimes.

The first rail is not anywhere near east van. I went there once and its rough as shit. The ground is like pebbles that have been cemented over and the rail is talllll. I don't remember the directions exactly.
p.s. those screen grabs are from a video me and my friends made.

This is the biggest problem in Vancouver right now. People just hoard spots. Of course I understand people don't want to blow out the spots and get them capped, but that's just how you stunt the progression of the scene.

I skate the park regularly and see people coming to skate on campus all the time....it is a bit of a destination spot though because most skaters live on the other side of town.....
20min bus ride to plaza....

Cool. I've only been to Vancouver once, so I know very little about it. I checked out the campus, as well as Antisocial and the downtown area. What does housing in the city usually go for?

I did my undergrad there and skated pretty much everyday. Lots of spots. The undergrounds can be fun if it's raining. Now there is a park right on campus.

In east van a one bedroom in the 600 square foot range or a basement suit is in the $900-$1200 range. More $ downtown.

there might be lots of spots and a park on campus, but literally NOBODY (well nobody besides me, it seems like) goes to UBC and actually skates. and when I mean actually skate I mean like you can at least do a fucking boardslide or something. so basically you're just having solo seshes all the time or skating with random people, which isn't very fun.
You seem pretty bitter. Every time I go out there these days I run into people skating, there is always people skating the park. Who cares if they go to school there or not. Your complaining about going to a school in one of the most beautiful locations in the world, with its own skatepark, lots of spots with low bust factor and NOBODY else skating them, not to mention the thousands of hot girls who also go to school there. Seems pretty fucking awesome to me. Wait till your in your mid thirties, have a real job, a family and get to skate once or twice a week maybe.
-
There's absolutely zero excuse to whine about UBC. It's a godsend, good luck street skating downtown and being as productive as you would at UBC

Honestly...I get it....no ones mentioned it but like the plaza....it can be like that.....but if you take some time and talk to dudes.....everyone is pretty cool and welcoming.....
Also...yes....living on campus in the summer at least is dead....I'd recommend living in east van....near a B line.....

Aye UBC heads, how do you like going to school there? And from what I understand it is a pretty good school, but I am unsure as to what US universities it compares to in regards to admission, rigor, etc.
-
I am doing my MSc right now. It's usually ranked in the top 20-30 schools worldwide (which is about as good as it gets for Canada). As far as I know, the school is particularly good in many areas of research. I've had really good profs... Admission was easy, I did all my application in one day no problem... didn't have particularly great marks in my undergrad either...
The bad side is the thousands and thousands of rich 20 year olds who are annoying as hell. I'm sure all universities are like that to an extent, but from my experience, these kids are especially annoying.
It's great in the summer, there are beaches (lots of naked old people at wreck beach ;)), far fewer students and it's even less likely than usual to get kicked out of a spot you are skating.
All I can say is the resources and professors will be generally good, just make sure you get a supervisor that suits you.

I did my undergrad there and skated pretty much everyday. Lots of spots. The undergrounds can be fun if it's raining. Now there is a park right on campus.
there might be lots of spots and a park on campus, but literally NOBODY (well nobody besides me, it seems like) goes to UBC and actually skates. and when I mean actually skate I mean like you can at least do a fucking boardslide or something. so basically you're just having solo seshes all the time or skating with random people, which isn't very fun.
Uhh, I go to UBC and skate there all the time. Hit me up if you want to skate with your fellow student.
hah, really? yeah for sure, i'd be down for a park sesh after reading break.

Yeah....all the spots are tougher to skate than how they look.....
I got to see them rip the park....highlight of my summer.....

Right?! The kickflip frontside wallride is no joke, it's uphill and the wall isn't even smooth, there's rough grainy lines that jut out from the wall. Not to mention the rock he ollies up onto is fucking big. Same thing with the bench Jake Donnelly kickflip back tails, it's high and super sticky. Crazy Mike Campbell front crooked it.

Heading to van from whistler tomorrow and it looks like its going to be raining. was really hoping to get a bit of a sesh in since i haven't been for a proper skate in a couple of months. any suggestions for undercover spots?

Leeside is in a tunnel but it might be flooded after all the rain
Sometimes parts of the plaza can stay dry and there is some stuff to skate under the cambie bridge.
SBC is right a main and haistings and has an indoor mini ramp.
Do you live in Whistler?

In whistler, there is a indoor mini ramp, I built, at the sk8 cave in function.
It's tight but fun once you get used to it.

Skated there last night, good times.

Cloverdale has a roof that works.....it's just a small street line but it's something. The dry spot is tiny but it's a reasonable last resort.... Chuck Bailey in Surrey is covered but the roof doesn't work well....and someone is prolly sleeping there....

Chuck Bailey bowl has been such a write off lately, someone always shitting in the bowl or leaving needles around.

I'm up in Van for the weekend and posted up at my step sisters place by Port Moody and Simcoe Park/skytrain. Any good spots close to me or do I need to head into Vancouver more?
-
Id say....if you skate street....get on the sky train and go to the plaza.....skate bc place....the curbs....
If you like tranny....Leeside and Hastings.....they are next to each other...
Parks....bonsor and chuck Bailey are on sky train....
The Pomo park is fun from what I remember but you might want a bit more...

Thanks! I ended up skating the manny pad by BC Plaza for a day and met some chill people. Gonna be headed back up for a week or so at the end of August. Chuck Bailey looks cool to skate. I actually went to the park by Pomo for my niece's first birthday and yeah it was cool but definitely want a bit more. Is the university worth checking out?

UBC is worth it if someone can show you the spots.....I never leave the park though.....
There's some in this edit:

Anyone else?

Art Gallery if you want a mellow five to warm up on
the benches across the street and up the stairs are always a good time (my homies call it upper art gallery but does it have a proper name?)
Coopers park, nice way to see a bit of the city, the bench is perfect, the up rail... well that shit broke my wrist but everyone else seems fine with it.
Real good ledges right outside Lee Side if you go there.
Surpised with all the Bonsor hype. The 5 rail is perfect to learn on but thats about it. This is also coming from a North Delta local though.
Queensborough park, just off the 22nd St sky train is a great tranny, sunday session.
Interesting seeing all the Antisocial love and little mention of Menu. Same market as far as what they sell just waaaaaaay less vibey.

start at the park and skate down agronomy towards west mall. the 12 and the classic white flatbar spot will be on the right, and then take the right and follow main mall. tooooons of spots on both sides of that path, and it goes all the way to the other side of the school.
-
There ya go! Thanks....maybe I'll get out of the park.

Next time you're staying in Port Moody you've got to go to Poco park

I'm an old fart and heading to Vancouver / Victoria for a few days this spring. Are the old dinosaur snake runs of North Van still a go? Is PD's Hot Shop still open?
favorite vegetarian restaurants? best sushi?

Both of the snake runs in North Vancouver, William Griffin and Seylynn are still Skateble as long as its dry.
PD's is still open but it's not on 4th anymore I think it's on 10th now.
The Naam on west 4th is a good vegan restaurant, also budgie burritos on Kingsway, kind of by antisocial.
There are literally thousands on Sushi restaurants in Vancouver. Depends what neighborhood your in.
-
The Acorn on 24th and Main is probably my favorite veggie spot, it's pretty pricey but it's really nice. Local seasonal menu.
Nuba (there is one on 3rd and Main and a couple of others around town) is also really good, not strictly veggie but it's Lebanese so you'll find a lot of options.
-
Thanks, dudes!
-
Matdlx, check out The Naam on west 4th for vegetarian eats, so damn good.

Chau veggie for the win....it's on Victoria dr. I think....they have a kiosk at Granville island....
If it rains go to Leeside....
If you like old skateparks hit China creek. Pd's is tenth and alma and if you make it there hit UBC. Other parks: horseshoe bay, queensborough, Ladner.....
Don't live there but Victoria just redid their park and it's suppose to be fun.

Unless you're really into bowls, then I'd rather stop by another park in BC. The Tofino park is also pretty cool and smack in the middle of downtown.
PDs is a skateshop. Basically the Skull Skates dudes.

Niice, thanks man. Im not super into bowls, Tofino park should be sweet though, we are staying like half an hour from the park, just looked it up, gonna be staying somewhere called Tigh-nah clayoquat vacation house on campbell road, should be fun. Never seen the PDs skatestore but ive only lived in Vancouver for 2 years now
-
If it's the spot google shows right by Tofino Brewery, then there might still be a ramp inside the brewery. Just something to keep in mind since it rains in Tofino about every hour or so.
But go surfing instead.
-
100% going surfing. Im originally from Australia and grew up skating and surfing, mostly skating and seeing as you cant surf anywhere in Vancouver, im pumped to be going to Tofino, going up on a thursday night and coming back sunday, will probably try and squeeze a skate in weather permitting but surfing and exploring are my main objectives

Bowls=Hastings/Leeside
Rain=W.49th in tswassenn or SBC (ramp) downtown east side.

reviving this thread because i'm going to be living in vancouver for at least 2.5 months starting in january. i spent a week out there last winter so i know a little bit, but what's the scene looking like these days? is plaza still skateable? also open to any other recommendations about anything, though i'm not trying to spend a lot of money

Plaza just got some sick renos, though they kind of fucked up and put a bunch of unnecessary asphalt patches in the ground because the city required them to fix cracks in the ground for "safety reasons". We were all stumped looking at it cause the ground was fine pretty much everywhere they did it. Brand new granite though - long pieces now. I got to contribute by suggesting they top the slappy wall with the old granite tiles - looks sick.
Unfortunately, as you probably know, you're coming during the absolute worst time for rain/cold. Not a lot of skating going down unless you're cool with skating half/fully wet spots in the cold. There's a new mini ramp on Granville Island that will be open until the end of December, maybe longer. Personally, I just go to California during the winter cause I can't get stoked to go skate in the cold, especially not when I'm healing from a bad injury.
-
Anyone on here still kicking in Vancouver?
I'm usually skating at UBC or Kits high, Kitsilano based.
Would be down to meet up or start an older (later 20's and up) skate group

if you can drive a trip out to tsawwassen is worth it. it's big and usually empty save the odd kid who shows up and does a few laps
Well - just make sure you go when kids are in school. That park has become horrible for scooters in recent years.
-
Skate the courts! Plazas always a fun time and the ledges are so good since they swapped em up. 401 is good again and not much of a kick out. Also some spots in that newer area in downtown near the stupid expensive chandelier they put up. Haven’t been to the new Emily Carr too much and did hear some things got knobbed but that spots super fun too.

401 isn't much of a kick out? They literally have 24/7 security posted at the doors on both ends and they come out as soon as they see you walking up with a skateboard. Everyone I know who skated it did so while getting booted. You can even see the security in the background of the few clips that have popped up. That being said, it's better than the old 401 for sure. I've tried to skate it a couple times with no luck - hope I stumble upon the low kick out vibes you speak of.
Emily Carr is great and you're actually allowed to skate the main plaza with the long angle iron ledge, but you're not supposed to skate any of the other areas, and someone had popped off a few of the knobs so in response the school put way more knobs on.
Right now Vancouver is better than it ever has been for spots. There's new ones popping up constantly. If you have a car you're stoked because you can just drive around looking for new developments. All of the schools in the lower mainland are being renovated as well because they don't meet seismic requirements so that means lots of new spots too.
-
Skated it two weekends in a row on Sunday’s and no kick out in the back where the 5s are. It was super fun. Maybe just luck of timing? I don’t know. Anyhow, I agree that it’s kind of the best right now. You can skate around downtown and hit different spots and it still be fun. Sure a ton of stuff is still knobbed but just make the most of it and don’t be a whiny puss and you’ll be fine. UBC is a bit out there but fun to skate around as someone mentioned earlier.

Yeah maybe just luck of the draw - that's how it always was in the 90's/early 2000's. UBC definitely has lots of stuff - always new buildings popping up out there.
-
Now that its 4 degrees and monsooning out... where's the good indoor/covered spots at for winter?
Other than all over UBC I only know of Cambie/Winners parkade and all underneath waterfront/seabus station
Does Plaza or Cooper's park ever stay dry during the rain? last winter I was lazy and did not adventure out one bit
-
I heard the Granville island ramp is coming back in some capacity, covid permitting of course. The school board parkade off broadway might be good this winter if everyone is working from home?

Haven’t seen a parent accompanied scooter pack since covid, granted I’ve avoided all the parks on the weekends. Seems the Kaydens and Aidons are confined to their suburbs... for now
if you want to have that theory heavily disproven, head out to the cloverdale skatepark on a saturday at around 1:30. there’s always tons of scooters, so morning sessions are becoming a regular thing for me :) they run “trains” of like 8 through the park, and the gather at the ends and make the wallride/steep bank at the end pretty much unskateable. the scoots are bountiful in cloverdale

The plaza looked fun and as @Hash Slinging Slasher said the rain is no joke. I thought part of it might be skateable since it is under a bridge but it was drenched everywhere. I'm looking forward to going back and rolling around after I settle in.
I saw some dudes skating down by UBC Robson Square. One of the dudes was trying a pretty gnarly run.
Rent is crazy here, but I'm getting a few good offers, one property manager offered me 2 months free if I signed up for a year long lease, I'm trying to see if we can do 1 free month and a 6 month lease. Another is offering me a month to month lease and half of this month free.
-
Welcome!
Rent can be huge here but hopefully you find a landlord you can trust and work out a good deal. The fact that those guys are offering you deals seems positive. A lot of people want to help you here even though it seems like everyone is super rich and entitled
Art Gallery/Robson Square downtown is sweet. UBC and Emily Carr have some good spots and are transit accessible. Everyone these days seems to be taking the skytrain to Marine Dr and skating the loading zone under the Mark's / Best Buy
Stick around until summer, its fucking amazing here. If I were you I'd take the 1 year lease, you'll want to stay.
Good luck with it all!
-
Welcome to Vancouver!
That south Vancouver Mark's/Best Buy lot is huge but if it's raining at all only the loading bay area is dry, and it's become a virtual skatepark these days, as far as the number of people there. I used to live a block away before it blew up and we always had it to ourselves back then. Still, people bring obstacles to skate so if you can deal with a crowd it's an option on rainy days. There's a bump over sidewalk in there too but again, only really good if it hasn't been raining hard. The loading bay part is always dry.
The Art Gallery/Law Courts underground downtown has been the go-to since at least the early 90's. Hit and miss as far as security is concerned. Half are totally cool with it, the other half are grumpy old farts who complain that you made them "walk a kilometer". Sometimes I just say I'm gonna leave and then stick around and never see them again anyway. It's mostly manual pads but there's a couple curb cuts, a rubbermaid can, and a long section of waxed curb against the wall.
There's other covered lots but no one wants to blow out the limited spots we have so you'll have to do the searching on your own for more than I've provided above. I'd suggest just poking your head into any covered lot you come across whether you have your board or not.
I've heard talk that the rather tight spine mini ramp is returning to Granville Island this year. That's another option, though I never hit it up when it was there before due to crowds.
Plaza will have dry strips if it hasn't been raining hard, but it's also incredibly rotten when it's wet in there and takes a while to dry due to all the divots in the ground. The granite got replaced last year though, so that's a bonus. Nice long slabs too. They somehow fucked up and forgot how to build skateparks when they did the renos, leaving gaps between some of the granite pieces, but I think they're doing ok now.
All of the schools in the lower mainland are being rebuilt since they're mostly 100+ years old, which so far has resulted in a lot of new spots. They've got countless schools to go still so you moved here at a great time - Vancouver has never been so blessed with good street spots as it is right now.
If you don't own a bike, buy one. This city is perfect for biking around to skates spots.
The rain is really hard to get used to, but once the borders are open I suggest doing what I do and escape to California each year for as long as you can afford in the winter. It helps immensely.
Have fun!
-
I was luckily enough to live in Kits on west 4th so close to the beach, right near downtown...I miss it so much...not so much the rain but looking forward to getting back to Vancouver.
-
Thanks for the advice on spots, I can't wait to check them out.
Also, my honeymoon with the rental market ended real quick. I have no idea why property managers lie about sound proofing.
"Will I hear TVs or conversations through the floor/ceiling?"
"Oh, no. This is a concrete building you won't hear anything. You don't hear anything now do you (at 4:00PM when everyone is at work)?"
I've been listening to my downstairs neighbor s TV for the past 4 hours and I can make out every word. Luckily, I've only given them my deposit (I paid it via interact), but I know this is still going to be a nightmare.

Couple of curbs and a little ledge inside. I skated there a lot when I lived in kerrisdale. Got kicked out once in awhile but security was chill. There's a school on maple and 49th with some stuff to skate. Curbs, little step ledges outside the front door, and like a long 3, flat, 3, flat 3 set around back. I used to skate there a lot in the evenings. Allyways in East Van are always fun to skate. There's always junk to riffle through or people to meet for whatever. Quilchina skatepark on Arbutus and 33rd is in the neighborhood too. It's small, and nothing crazy but it's never busy.

Man, that school got redone and is amazing now. Ledge land. Tons of manual options too. Only finished since it's been mostly wet out so the full potential won't be realized until spring. I popped by there today actually, but it was wet and there was a crew already skating the small dry part. Checked out that underground parking lot afterward - didn't see a ledge but saw the yellow sidewalk curbs waxed up. Shame the ground is literally sandpaper. Still, in that area it's something for the long winters.
-
Oh that's sweet they've redone that school. I haven't lived in Vancouver for about six years now, and stuff changes so god damn fast in that city. You're right about the parking garage, it was a god send on those loooooooong wet winters, and I only lived a block away I could just walk there.
-
Funny I just found that parking garage yesterday driving around....I'm a ground snob too though...
They redid quichena a couple years back so now there are people there but it's not too bad.
Right now rent isn't cheap, but there's more availability than usual and its relative....ask what people pay in SF and you'll feel better. You usually take your lumps on your first spot but keep looking....
There's a baby DIY under the burrard bridge. Should be done next weekend.

When its done, take some photos bro, i skated it a few years back when it was just a sketchy ramp and some slabs of wood thrown around, be curious to what it looks llike now

It's actually right next to the old one which is kind of still around but really shitty now. I live just down the street and last I saw there was just the one quarter, this new shit looks great!

I don't believe someone offered you two months free rent with a lease, must be a fake :o :o :o
-
We all seem to live/lived right by this spot yet prolly never talked to each other.....it's kinda the Vancouver way......

The elevator in the building will be out for a month so that was part of the reason for the incentive...
...but just walking around the West End today I saw the beach towers were offering first and last month free.
Covid is super shitty, but it seems now is the time to negotiate rent.
And, I don't know the laws here, but a month or two free is probably better than actually lowering the rent. As soon as life goes back to normal the landlord can immediately go back to collecting absurd rent prices without worrying about legal limits on rent increases.

hahah aint that the truth. Each time i was skating under the bridge nobody else ever showed up.... dont think there was many other spots in kits i skated apart from a school a few blocks from darbys.
Ahhh i cant wait to covid chills so i can fly back for a visit, funnest 4 years of my life living there....apart from being broke 27/7

Skated the plaza a couple times now... the local dudes rip.
It is a little weird trying to recover from my injuries last fall and feeling a bit awkward on my board, but still super fun. And, most of the dudes seem pretty cool. No one is insanely overly friendly but I haven't seen too many dudes that are just "too cool" to be polite.

Nice. I might head down there tomorrow in the day. It's been fairly mild.

I got sidetracked today running around to get supplies to build a skate box - but I'll keep tabs on this thread and I'm sure we'll get a skate in eventually. Got a few more days of sun coming it looks like.

I built two boxes this past year, one of 'em got stolen but it's been a super fun process. What dimensions are you going for?

Not sure if there was another Vancouver, BC thread so bumping this up. I'll be staying for a night near the airport. Just looking to skate some spots and eat some good food if anyone has any recommendations for vegetarian restaurants and bars. I will have a car so don't mind driving a little if I have to. So far on my spots list I plan on checking out the Plaza and UBC skatepark. Also how crusty are the streets there? Will worn down classics be ok or should I step up to a chunkier wheel?

You should check Courts > plaza and UBC.
Also go visit Anti Social and skate Mount Pleasant (small but fun park). Then check Menu skateshop and go look at Black Ice famous double set downtown.

If you’re staying near the airport in Richmond: Thompson community centre weird plaza park, and the Richmond oval : low ledge spot, for the true Ben D experience. UBC is easy to hit my car and has some street spots. Plaza, T-fox, curbs by the arena is all close to skytrain. If you are getting in a car: north/west van=ambleside and Mahon. Other suburbs=surrey : cloverdale, guilford and chuck Bailey.
Veg eats: vegan shoku, to live for bakery, virtuous pie: near plaza. Budgies burritos by antisocial. I’ll think of more..

yea if you're only visiting for one night i would skip UBC skatepark (unless you're planning on skating around campus all day, there's lots of spots there)
honestly just skating courts (https://www.instagram.com/britanniacourts/?hl=en) and walking around that area is a nice plan, idk exactly how much time you have
