For a second I thought he had a cigarette in his mouth too! got the creature-green slime marks in the pool as well.

I was pretty keen on skating transition in my early 20s and have done a bunch inverts/handplants but holy shit eggplants are a whole other level, let alone over a love seat in a pool with pebblecrete lip. Insane!

if you’re planting with your back hand doing an invert it’s easier to come back in because all of your weight is naturally kind of going that way anyways. if it’s and eggplant its your front hand so you almost have to throw your weight over your shoulder and commit to going back in with a lot more of a chance of hanging up.

i can’t do and have never done either, just know from friends who had them down.

imagine fucking the dog shit outta chris roberts

I hear a Handplant discussion and my ears perk up, so apologies in advance for nerding out

I haven’t done an egg, and have a mediocre invert so take this as you will

With an invert, you don’t have to commit all your weight into the trick, at least in as gnarly of a way. Any egg worth salting, you definitely have to.

Think of an eggplant as a fly-out Indy air to snatching the coping as you dive bomb in (perfectly illustrated by Mr Russell above). Whereas an invert feels a lot closer to “home”. You don’t throw your weight as crazy. Almost like wafting an BS early grab, but using your arm as a pivot point.

There’s also like two main ways to get into an egg.
1. More modern - Full air out, plant the coping on the way in (Schroeder, anyone since 2000) don’t die
2. “Back in the day” - Plant earlier and really “kick” your weight up and inverted (Groholski, Grosso, Lance, etc) sometimes looks more masterful than the prior
3. I guess it goes back further - like roto-rooters and shit but that is wayy before my time

Fuck, I wanna go try this trick now

The man in the picture has absolutely nothing in common with the Chris Russel I remember from a few years ago.

Great trick and photo!

Nice to see him bouncing back from the eye catastrophe. I'll forever love him for roasting transphobe Taylor Silverman on the gram. Still curious though why Jake Kuzyk, himself a queer snowboard pro and skate filmer, was so hard-core bummed about him on his bunt episode.

My guess is he went all the way from the bottom left corner of the pic. Didn't go low to high from the love seat to the coping, but aired across the love seat.

You'll comprehend the implications when you see a properly attempted eggplant go wrong in real life. I heard that shoulder bone snap on the coping from across the bowl. The way Russell does them is also the most dangerous way. High speed travelling horizontal distance, all body weight already back on its way down and more or less comitted to a front flip that will send you head first into the coping unless you hit it with your hand perfectly and reverse the entire momentum of your flipping, falling body, which gives you just enough momentum to get your feet and board back under you and if you dont tuck them in quite hard enough you hang up and get pitched face first to the flats with one hand on your board and the other somewhere near the coping. Chances of bringing your hands up before impact are not a given. Russel's version has to be one of the most elite-level only tricks out there. It should have its own name. I don't follow a lot of transition and vert pros but I think there's a very big number of them who go their entire career without adding that trick to their roster. To do it without pads and helmet is borderline insane.

Think overturned indy air across the love seat (left to right from our POV.

Handplants for me are such a perfect weirdo skate trick.  I feel like you don't really see them that much these days.  Airing over a loveseat into an eggplant is just something else, and the slimy green looking pool is so on point for the hesh vibe.  Great stuff.

Yes, everything in this photo is perfectly color coordinated, although I bet it wasn't intentional. It's like he and the deck are in camouflage in this environment. Imagine this shot with him wearing a yellow t-shirt and jeans. The pic just wouldn't work.
