Now that Consolidated is on the forefront of Nike boycotting will we see a rise in don’t do it gear?

I ordered a pair of their slip-ons a while ago, I’ll be on the forefront of being late

I'm guess you haven't gotten them either... Being core also means you can have shit customer service and poor quality product because you don't have the budget for quality factories to outsource through.
-
What up Leticia :-*

Consolidated are like hipsters. They were hating on Nike before it was cool.

Hahaha. Nah, we don’t have 100% scum who steal from their friends, working with us. Not the best “business model.” Haha. (Btw, I’m not including TNT in this comment because I am not involved in that, so I won’t speak on behalf of that.)

It would be great to see them reclaim their glory, you know, being relevant in skateboarding and not telling people what to wear. The OG Cube days were fucking glorious. Get a solid team together and make consolidated great again, or not. Don't Do It is a cash cow.

I don’t know but I do remember looking at google analytics for them last year around the kotr stuff and that brought them the most web traffic in the us since 2009 . Majority of web traffic looked to be from South America.

Not really, but like other small brands, (Skull Skates, Driven, Street Plant) they have a cult following that’s pretty removed from US gossip and tastes.
I just wanted a canvas slip-on with more ollie protection, and one of the local shops carries Consolidated

So many random companies are popular in Japan. Pretty sure traffic was able to keep going because of accounts in japan alone.

todd bratrud who used to do consolidated graphics, did a shoe colorway with Nike that had NOTHING to do with Consolidated. Todd said he used the San Jose Sharks colorway, but those colors are also the Consolidated cube colorways and Consolidated was bummed because it was perceived as a Consolidated dunk when it wasn't supposed to be. It was something like that, if I remeber correctly. Leticia? Care to elaborate?

Consolidated had this graphic back in the day that said "Oh, the humanatee." It had pictures of manatees under the sea wearing shorts and it cracked me up. I used to draw it in my high school notebooks. Actually, I still doodle it when I draw with my niece. I wonder if Scott Bourne still skates.

Yeah, you pretty much got it pretty spot on, Christopher. We didn’t know about the shoe until it was being sold to shops, and they started asking me about it and I had no idea what they were talking about. It was really lame. Nike even wanted to call it the Consolidunk, but luckily, Todd had the common sense to tell them there was no way that could happen.

I'm glad Leticia had a great answer. I can't think of anything worse than supporting the extreme-right.
Also, while we are on the subject, I firmly believe that Todd's shoe combined with the infamous ultimatum is what made Nike legitimate among the core. I remember right after these two incidents a certain core dude who likes sombrero footage was rocking Nike and all the local dominos fell behind him. After this guy went against Consolidated and sided with the swoosh it was all over. (Not saying it was all him, but his defection was a really big symbolic moment in the Don't Do It campaign.)
But, I honestly, I feel like Nike boxed Consolidated in and I don't think there was a right answer for the Consolidated here. If they stayed silent the swoosh could pretend Consolidated backed them and the swoosh could continue to steal from the cube's history as a core brand, or Consolidated could make a few aggressive moves trying to defend their history and alienate some within the scene. Either way Nike and its anthropologist market researchers really boxed Consolidated in. (Not to say Consolidated didn't have issues and it was completely innocent, but the game was rigged against them.)
People give P-Rod credit for making Nike, but this has never sat well with me. No one in the core gave a fuck about P-Rod. At the time, he was hated for abandoning eS and Girl.

So crazy, seems like you were living our nightmare with us, with this post, TheLurker. We did feel that way: damned if we did and damned if we didn’t. But we just dug deep and then the answer became black and white-stay true to what we always believed...and then it didn’t matter what the consequences would be.
But yeah, it sucked big time when they tried attaching themselves to us...without either Birdo or myself having Ever talked to anybody there. When we saw the email from a NorCal Nike sales rep aligning us with them and insinuating that we were part of the Send Help shoe, that’s the straw that broke the camel’s back and just solidified so much of what we felt they were about, so back to war we went...
But to be honest with you, I don’t know who the sombrero footage guy is?? Or at least, he’s not coming to mind??

Hey Cucktard, yeah, our supplier actually sent us fotos of his factory and I posted em on one of the threads about us on here. I can see if I can find em. And he also told us that that the working conditions was something that was very important to him. So yes, we are very comfortable with who we are working with!

The last run was suede, but this run is canvas. They’re going for like $55-60, and yes, it is a non-slave shoe. We know pricing on shoes is important, so that helped us bring the price down. But we also wanted to make sure they lasted, so we added the toe cap and Ollie guard. We just posted a clip of somebody skating in them over on our gram if you wanna check it out...

Just picked them up last night.
And for a slip-on, I’m impressed. Canvas outer, some kind of soft mesh lining, the caps are pretty thick and the heelcup is pretty stiff.
The only thing I’m not impressed with is the insole, but I usually switch mine out anyways.
Nice work

Yes, I buy shoes in an immoral system. I am thusly hypocritical no matter what.
What you seem unable to do is separate my critique of specifically Nike driving the labor race to the bottom of the barrel and me buying shoes.
PS- the free market is not the sole driver of innovation. Human ingenuity is, that that happens regardless of economic system.

-
Necessity does drive a lot of innovation, but not all.
There has been a lot of science done for the sake of science, not because it is ‘necessary ‘ in an economic sense. To satisfy human curiosity.
The invention of skateboarding wasn’t filling any kind of necessity except to kill boredom when waves were flat.

Questions for Leticia:
1. Do you ever worry that by holding such a polarized view of the world you miss out on the true nuanced nature of reality? By making a blanket statement of “Fuck Nike” you’re essentially saying everything they do is always bad. Can you admit that while you disagree with certain actions, there are plenty of good things they do. Seeing the world in only black and white terms is one of the classic logical fallacies: False Dilemma/False Dichotomy.
2. You’ve stated multiple times that you do not skateboard. I’m curious to why? You run a skateboard company and have immersed yourself in skateboarding culture. It’s interesting that you feel confident to be an authoritative voice in our community yet show no desire to actually participate in it.
3. Do you hold the same standards of “fuck Nike” in other areas of your life? Before you buy a toothbrush or nail clipper do you research the company to make sure it 100% lines up with the entirety your ethics? I’m assuming you can’t ever use amazon because of their documented treatment of workers. You eat meat, so you’re comfortable with the loss of a sentient being for your pleasure, yet despise an outside company entering skateboarding. I also find it interesting that you have a photo drinking Coors light, who do exactly what you claim to despise in skateboarding to the craft beer industry. You also have a photo drinking a Red Bull. Curious to why Red Bull’s participation in skateboarding, marketing unhealthy drinks to children, is any worse than that of Nike’s.

Casey Hellseth told me he has never (with his own eyes) seen neither Leticia nor Birdo even step on a skateboard
This is the most fraud company in skateboarding who are selling you on not buying from fraudulent companies.
Leticia and Birdo yall have some real testicles to post vacation pics meanwhile your riders are notoriously struggling

Whatever dude. You bore me.

Ah yes the scientific invention of the skateboard. Please humor me on what your ideal economic system is.

Still unclear how your made up utopian economy will allocate scarce resources, each of which have alternative uses.
But anyways.... are you foreign or something dude? Consolidated is based out of Santa Cruz and no one in Santa Cruz fucks with them.

Leticia,
I’m already obligated to buy the shoes I ordered from the local shop, so you guys are getting my money regardless.
But I would like to know, what are the conditions like in the factory you use to make the shoes? Is it any different than the average sweat-shop run by vans or Nike?
Do you guys have labor standards when looking at factories?
This isn’t an attack, I’m buying your shoes regardless at this point, but it is something (the main thing, actually) that pisses me off about Nike. So I’m wondering if you guys approach that aspect and differently as well
Hey Cucktard, yeah, our supplier actually sent us fotos of his factory and I posted em on one of the threads about us on here. I can see if I can find em. And he also told us that that the working conditions was something that was very important to him. So yes, we are very comfortable with who we are working with!
did he pinky swear?

I’m putting these together because apparently it’s completely reasonable to ask for a working alternative for mandkind’s economy any time someone dares to point out the shitty aspects of Nike and capitalism.
And I suspect not because you (or the many others that react with this dismissive query that is more a way to shut down the conversation) are interested, but it feels good to yell ‘hypocrite ‘ in your heads and keep things the same rather than acknowledge we need serious change.
But anyways, since you asked...
There are a wealth of different approaches apart from the extreme corporate American model (which by the way, relies heavily on subsidies/tax breaks/tax avoidance, so it’s “socialism for the rich, capitalism for the poor”. )
This could be anything from Schumacher-style ‘Buddhist Economics” theory, mixed economies (markets for luxuries, cooperative control of basic human needs like food, electricity, water), PARECON-style horizontal economies, algorithms for resource allocation based on need (not any different than now, except we use algorithms for profit margins) or anything in between. For now, i’d be happy with Varoufakis-style steps toward weaning ourselves off the more extreme elements of corporate capitalism.
I don’t have a personal favorite, but it is obvious that Capitalism is unsustainable, exaggerates inequality, and deadly to the planet.
It needs to end soon, because it has no internal way of stopping resource destruction and pushing global warming to suicidal levels before it’s already too late. Which it may already be.
Bawtawdwon- the skateboard was obviously an example of everyday innovation, but if you want a scientific one, how about Hubble or CERN? The skateboard itself is an example of ingenuity based on play, not economic competition, in case I wasn’t being clear enough. Or you being deliberately obtuse.
And by the way, how do you solve the problem of Capitalism’s need for infinite growth with us being on a planet of very limited resources?
Bob, I’m Canadian, but live overseas.
