I know this has been pretty beaten to death but...
Today I was with a bunch of skaters who were cleaning their bearings (Indy blacks) and they were saying they are better than Powell Swiss,
I was in a six ball minority but the blacks spin seem pretty good for half the price,,, I had the Indy 7's which were rubbish in my opinion....
Is there any truth to this heresy?
-
Never tried regular Swiss, only the Super Swiss Six Balls. Greatest bearings and well worth the money. Never tried the Indy bearings either. I haven't had the SS6's in awhile and if I'm not riding those I'm on Reds. Cheap and never blow out. I just spoil myself and buy new ones every time I get a new complete since they're cheap. I bet the Indy's would be just about the same as Reds. Personally, I don't nerd out on bearings like I do with truck and bushing combo's.
-
I've tried swiss, 6 ball, rocking ron, hard luck ceramics all sorts of hit. Get any Bones swiss if you have the money but Indy Blacks are well worth the money and very durable.

Hard Luck just released a six ball for only $18, yo!
-
My Indy 7s are sluggish as fuck now. It looks as if they're lubed with cream cheese. Nothing seems to make them flow smoother or anything.
-
You should make sure you haven't put any speed cream on your bagel......
I think the main argument is stuff not made in China is at least consistent.....on the other hand...what will often do your bearings in is getting smashed around which no bearing is immune from.
Abec ratings are garbage right because the test doesn't relate to skateboarding? Something like that.....
-

Buy these, but make sure you put new SS6 in new wheels and trucks. Axle slip and debris can fuck em up
-
From my personal experience:
I tried the Andale ABEC 7 and they broke in a month.
Shake Junt ABEC 7 hold up pretty well but, nothing too special.
Bones Super Reds are a bit faster than the Shake Junts
Bones Reds are definitely always reliable. I had a pair that rusted and still spun pretty fast.
I have a pair of the ABEC 5 Autobahn and Bronson to try next
-
hard luck released their own 6 ball bearings which i've been considering of getting.
i won some swiss sixes a couple years ago which...rolled pretty smoothly however i broke one of the ball retainers. smh i swear all bones cages break. perhaps its just me, but it seems like bones swiss metal is soft because i've managed to dent the balls in each one of my swiss bearings, maybe its because i dont use spacers. anyways..
never had indies bearings but i hope this helps.
-
Never been too picky with bearings. As long as the shields pop off and the cages are nylon instead of metal, then I'm good to go.
-
This is because they watched a video indy put out saying they were better than swiss.
Ad got 'em, Sharon.
-
I've used bones Swiss in various forms for a decade or so. I was a little surprised for the support these indy's had, particularly after my experience with their other higher end bearings. I trust bones Swiss, just wondered if anyone had tried the Indy blacks and switched...

Honestly, disappointing. They were $45 and lasted a couple of months. I cleaned them and they were never the same (Never had a problem cleaning other bearings). Seized up and they're done. I'd rather get two sets of Indy Blacks for that price or pay a bit more and get Bones Swiss. Also consider Rockin Rons. They're about $25 and on par with Swiss...

That's a bummer. I've just bought the Jason Jesse Swiss bearings on sale, has anyone tried them? I've had the stainless 'good times' bearings and they lasted a few months but a few of them have seized up now, even with a good clean and lube

I was wondering about the good times as well. I figured since they were stainless they'd last a while, kinda bummed to hear they weren't that good. The one set of indy 7's I had were terrible, but the indy blacks are cheap enough that i'll probably pick up a set.

chromium steel is harder than stainless which i believe is better for skating applications.

had the hard luck ceramics for a year, still as fast as in the beginning. no complaints here.

Has anyone skated Powell Swiss and the blacks?
I'd give them a go but the last set of Indys I had were really shit.
Fast is fine and all but Swiss last a year or so at least...
I figure these are NHS, so are Benson their higher end bearings?
I'm sceptical overall, Powell Swiss have been the best bearings I've ridden in almost two decades..

I have had swiss, reds, blacks, and Bronson.
In regard to speed, they all seemed within the margin of error with each other, with the exception of the bronsons which felt sluggish to me. As for durability, I got a couple years out of the Swiss and am 2.5 years on the reds getting about due for a replacement. I hated the bronsons, and I fucked up one of the blacks trying to get it out of a way too tight wheel.

The consensus seems to be that bronsons suck. Glad I haven't wasted my money on a set

has anyone else ever used DeoxIT on their bearings? I tried it because I had nothing else around the house, and it works incredibly. DeoxIT is designed for metal connectors and contacts so I wasn't sure if it would do anything. this could be a completely incorrect use of it but it works really well.

We used to skate these growing up. Very durable, long lasting bearings. Not quite as fast as Swiss or Ceramics but definitely not slow either

Right on. I've always used Shorty's 1" Phillips as my hardware since day one. Part of my OCD, can't use anything else. But I don't think I ever tried their bearings. The Black Panthers seem overpriced, plus any bearings using Abec systems I completely disregard. But these Qik's are only $11 and everything being made of steel intrigued me.

I got some Bones Swiss Ceramics sealed in da package if anyone wants 'em. $85 shipped.

There's two programs.....reds or Swiss......
^ yup. don't fuck with anything other than Bones.
...and it's because they're straight up less prone to breaking. i've had sets of both for years on end, and are currently running on about 8 beautiful months with the sheilds popped and they are as good as the day i bought them. anything else would have exploded by now... guaranteed.

Yeah, I'm of your schools of thought, but...

My Hard Luck ceramics have been great. One started to seize up because of some dirt... rinsed it out with hot water, dried it with dust-off, add a drop of lube and you're good to go. The only bearings I keep my shields on for.

I actually really like Indy bearings and have only had good experiences.

Ninja Abec 7s is all I rock.

Can someone tell me what the deal with Super Reds is? I'm too poor to buy Swiss and I'm curious as to whether it's a worthy use of $25. I've never had anything other than Bones and fear change.

"better quality steel races, better quality steel balls, better surface finish."
In other words, there is no difference. Buy regular reds.

Bump
Hey so as of late has anyone tried Indy blacks and how are they compared to the ole reliable bones bearings ?
I’ve had Indy 7’s and loved them they just weren’t durable and popped on me a lot but I loved how fast they were before giving up after the second set for good ole bones
-
R.I.P. Frip...and it was possibly this thread that got me riding six balls...a Tracer recommendation no less....
-
Sad...
Haha I can’t muster the confidence in putting more than $25 Into bearings and just got a set of blacks to try but wanted to hear some feedback before I ride and decide to stick with super reds or go back to Indy bearings and their quality claims compared to bones
-

Same here, even when dirty they're fast and smooth. I also had the Bronson g3's, definitely not impressed, smooth but not fast whatsoever. Maybe in a super smooth concrete park but they did not treat me well in the streets. Not worth 30 bills IMO

They won't rust if you dry them immediately after with compressed air or a hair dryer or something like that and rinsing them properly after soaking in some cleaning solution might get the stuck shit off better than only soaking in a cleaning solution. Will also get all the detergent off if you're using a cleaning solution with detergent in it. So, it's not as crazy as it might sound initially. 😊

With these talks of rust, I feel the need to bring up Hard Luck has Stainless Steel bearings for $30, I believe. Those will be my next bearings, myself.
-
swiss 6, then swiss, then indy 7/black (both decent), then reds. and avoid bronson.
-

I’ve been considering those for my rain setup but they’re not very widely available in Europe. Stainless steel is softer though so they might not be as durable. I pretty much only skate low impact stuff so I dunno if it’d make a difference for me. 🤔

My Indy blacks are still going strong, though without shields now, seems the rubber was flimsy and bent really easy slowing me down.
Swiss Six and Bronson G3s are what I'm rocking now (strictly park, but impact from ollies/tricks whathaveyou).
Hell, my andale 7s scream without shields (+bronson lube).

Cool, then I’m glad I got back with Indy bearings cause yeah bones are the best but they never felt fast like Indy’s to me.
Bones hold up and are decently good fast but Indy’s feel faster just don’t hold up as well from my Indy 7’s experience

The Swiss six are fucking champs, but they are not excluded from binding or slowing due to shields or any of the other issues that plague bearings, but they are fast as fuck.
I miss my black panthers, they lasted so damn long. Super reds also good....they're all the same shit, really just depends on quality control, which Bones have in spades compared to the rest of the heathen masses.

I wish I could drop money for some 6 ball but idk bearings aren’t that high on the scale for what’s important for my setup, as all of slap knows it’s trucks for me, then wheels then deck then bearings then grip tape then hardware
Yeah I remember my friends black panthers were crazy good, and he had the abec 3 but for a low tier on the rating they hissed nicely and were actually fast and smooth
-
I've been using Bones Reds for about 7 years now and they have yet to fail me. I clean them out with speed cream from time to time. I've had the current pair for about three years now.
-
I got talked into some Bronsons and they're ok but probably not worth the price jump up from Reds. Also, Reds are easier to clean.

Spitfire cheapshots anyone?
I can get them dirt cheap (cheaper than anything else) and I have better experience with them than with Reds
I have Indy GPs on my cruiser (the steel shields one, cheapest indy bearing) and so far they glide
Riding Bronson Raw right now on my main setup. Best bearings I had so far (had bones swiss before)
Will see if they last

Don’t do it!
The only cheap bearings worth a try are from trusted brands and word of slappers like maybe those 11:11 bearings
From my experience rush have only been good once and it was some 7’s or whatever they’re called cause they were actually some what quality not the best but they worked pretty well, bombers are the worse
It’s best to go with either mini logos, Indy gp, or the fast but fragile spitfire cheapshots

You may have gotten a set from our very first batch that we had some issues with! We've moved to a new factory and are super happy with the quality since. Just sent you a DM, would love to send you a replacement set to try out

I just got a set of Indy Blacks in the mail last night. It's freezing cold so it'll probably be a couple days before I can try them out. I'm running Bronson G3's right now. I haven't had any issues with them and they felt fairly fast to me, but all the hate has made me paranoid. The love the blacks have had recently (and the price) made it a safe bet for me to try them.

Yeah. I've got two sets of Hard Luck ceramics and I fucking love them. I had the first set of 6balls they released too but the shields completely fell apart so I was basically skating shield-less bearings since everything up to the metal part of the shield just shredded but they were still pretty good bearings.
-
Indy Black are rad.
