Favorite concerts/shows that you've attended
« on: August 18, 2013, 09:16:05 AM »
So ever since I was a young child back in the 90's my papa dukes has promoted and enthused upon live music over pretty much anything else out there. He used to take me to a ton of different concerts before I got my driver's license and a vehicle to get to them on my own.

Some favorites of mine that I've seen so far would be:
RUN DMC (with Jam Master Jay, R.I.P.)
The Grateful Dead with Bob Dylan as the opening act in 1995
Leftover Crack @ CBGB with INDK
Neil Young
STS9 @ Bonnaroo 2003
The Disco Biscuits (many times from 2002 onward)
Aesop Rock  (Bonnaroo 2007)
The Roots (Bonnaroo 2006)
Bruce Hornsby (who Tupac took a sample of for the song "Changes", look it up)
Bela Fleck and The Flecktones @ New Orleans Jazz Fest 1997

-Phantogram and The Joy Formidable at Outside Lands 2011 in San Francisco
-Motorhead at the local Knitting Factory two years ago.  Loudest show of my life.
-Del the Funky Homosapien while rolling
-I'm looking forward to Ty Segall next month and predicting a new favorite.

I've definitely attended my fare-share of good concerts so far. The one that stands out for being the best overall, well-rounded show would have to be Neil Young. He played acoustic, piano, and electric..plus he gave almost an hour-long encore, and a lotta people'd lefte so I immediately jumped up to the front.

Some other noteworthy shows:
-Yo La Tengo (always a blast to see them, Ira is onea the best, ever)
-Dinosaur Jr. (first time saw them at the Fillmore in SF, got tinnitus from J's 3 massive full stacks)
-Nick Cave (possibly puts on one of the best live performance that I've seen in a while)
-My Bloody Valentine (knocked off 'being in front row in front row for Holocaust Section' off my bucket list)
-Morrissey shows are always fun

Worst act I can think of that I've seen was Bob Dylan. Dude started early, we had shitty seats, was electric the whole time with his grumbly-ass voice, and ended early without encore I believe.

I saw Godspeed You Black Emperor a couple years ago on acid. That was definitely my favorite show I've ever been to. I'm going to see Black Sabbath with my dad at the end of the month so I'm stoked for that

in no particular order. i really really liked/ felt these shows

-manu chao (2005) at embarcadero in san diego. so many humans dancing and so hot
-phobia (2004) in my hometown mexicali. very cool dudes, brutal moshing and the place reeked of crusties
-crystal castles (2011) in tijuana. im pretty sure the place was over-capacity because i almost asphyxiated, alice glass is a beast onstage
-black lips (2013) in san diego. they went balls out as usual, bat shit wild performance. one of the funnest mosh pits
-the spits (2013) on my birthday, my buddy who is friends with sean wood let him know about it and said before a song "the spits would like to say happy birthday to our good friend al partanen and jesse who is here tonight!" (partanen was out of town).  their performance was fucking hectic to say the least, loved it. the next morning i had an impromptu breakfast with the band
stoked

Mastodon and Dethklok - Amazing performance, and also happened to be my first real concert.
The Aquabats - By far my favorite concert. Ever. They are seriously the most entertaining band to watch.
Anamanaguchi - Most colorful concert I've been to. Also probably the most fun I've ever had at a show.
Rush - Flawless.

Honorable mention: The Toasters

Damn it looks like that place holds almost 2,000 more people than Madison Square Garden in NY where the Knicks play. You guys had good seats? And did they play "The Working Man" by any chance? I know that's somewhat of a hit, but you never seem to hear it on the radio like Tom Sawyer or Temples of the Syrinx. Actually, my homies made a skate video about 15 years ago that plays Temples of The Syrinx in it during the opening credits. Still got the VHS tape of it.

Here's a video of an old pro flatlander skating to Tom Sawyer, dude does some 360 manual spins on two boards (double one footed manuals???)

Bassnectar - Halloween 2010. I was 16 and it was the first big dubstep show that I had attended (I had attended a dozen or so smaller shows beforehand). Regardless of people feel about his music, in my opinion it was the peak of his creativity and his actual performance was phenomenal. Maybe it was the music and maybe it was the white on white tab of acid that I had ingested very early on in the night. Either way, it was one of my favorite concerts.
Sublime w/ Rome and 311 played an incredible show back in 2011 as well, but that was more for childhood nostalgia purposes.

I'm seeing MGMT next month and Tame Impala in October --- both shows should prove to be a real treat.

Mogwai in Chicago 2001
Modest Mouse in Chicago 2001
Beastie Boys in Milwaukee 1995 - first real show. Still have my ticket. Was so stoked on that show.
Nokie Edwards (former guitarist of The Ventures) at the Casbah in San Diego a few years back. No one was there. He was like an enlightened monk playing guitar.

I guess I'll bring in the rap shit:

- Young Jeezy - 2012 (Tickets were half off cause it was a Wednesday concert and no one was buying them. Small crowd and hyped performance)
- The Roots -  2011 (Saw them New Years Eve and they did a 2 hour set)
- The Dogg Pound - 2012 (small venue again and they did all the classic stuff I grew up to)
- Black Moon - 2006
- Rakim 2007

Others stuff:

- Sade - 2012
- Incubus - 2001 (saw them 6 times but first concert was the best)
- Boys 2 Men/Babyface - 199-something (first concert ever)
I'll fuckin

Pavement and Beck in '96. i was 10, i thought Pavement was boring at the time but now i brag about seeing Pavement when i was 10.
Private Mars Volta warm up show at the Troubadour in 2003, embarrassed that i liked them so much but that show was fucking amazing.
Pretty much every show at The Smell in the early 2000's were great, namely Blood Brothers,Moving Units,Fucking Champs.
Explosions in the Sky at Koo's in Long Beach (i think?) maybe 100 people were there, all sitting on the floor.
RRIICCEE, one of Vincent Gallo's projects with Eric Erlandson and Nikolas Haas at The Echo. Beautiful, odd, noisy improvised set.
More recently, Antwon at The Smell there were like 25 people in attendance. Trash Talk and Space Ghost Purp. I was really impressed with how
fucking powerful Trash Talk sounded live.

Number one would be David Bowie in 2003, on his last tour... 10 years ago, crazy!

Other than that:

Leonard Cohen
Flaming Lips
Ulver
Bohren & der Club of Gore several times
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in London (going to see them again in October)
Bjork
Swans
Wolves in the Throne Room were pretty awesome as well.

all I can think of right now...

Bomb The Music Industry is my all time favorite band, and seeing them was always fucking stellar. They're on a hiatus and I'm having withdrawls, as I used to see them at least once a year.

I've also seen Andrew W.K multiple times and it's always such a blast. He's a crazy energetic performer and everybody there is always super happy and nice.

I saw guns last October at the Bridge School Benefit and those shows are all acoustic so it was pretty rad seeing them play those AfD songs acoustically. A lot people were bitchng about axl's voice but he sounded pretty good to me. 1st time I saw beck was also at one of the Benefits it was 2011 I think and saw him again in 2012 at outside lands.

Black Sabbath was really fucking good last night, only 2 songs off the new album, that I can remember. They did a 2 hour set too, Started with War Pigs, the final song of the encore was Paranoid.

I had never been to Shoreline before though, so the parking was horrible, the beers were WAY TOO MUCH, $11 for a tall can, and shitty Mountain View cops roam the parking lots in their personal vehicles making sure you aren't drinking in the parking lot.

So fuck Mountain View PD,

Sabbath bro.
