the sex pistols were/are pretty lame too. they never did anything original, and only had a few good songs. they just had the "look" so everyone views them as the posterchild of UK punk.
people in the UK had been playing music influenced by the mc5, new york dolls, the heartbreakers, richard hell, television etc. for a while before the sex pistols came into existence and wrote the corniest music ever written.

GG Allin - I used to write to him when he was in prison, I was like 17 years old and he would write back and draw cool pictures in on the envolopes in colored pencils.  Earl Parker lived in my town, and made a zine called Polyurethane Monthly, we both had mini ramps in our basements and Earl would take pictures and he didn't skate much he had blown out his acl ligament.  I gave Earl the address to write to GG, and he put the interview he did with him in the next issue.  The day I graduated highschool, Powell did a demo with a little mini ramp and some funbox, and Earl gave Tony Hawk a copy of the zine.  I was trying to get Tony to sign a Duane Peters skull skate deck I bought at the skate shop, but when he saw the board he wasn't having it.  Then about six months later I was a freshman in college, and Earl stopped at the dorm on a tour he was doing for Big Brother and gave me one of the first issues he did as editor of Big Brother.

Some other bands I like are: The Mentors (I don't know if calling them punk is correct, their on another level), all Duane bands, and Johnny Thunders, and The Ramones.

I like a lot of that old school 80's punk rock, mainly Op Ivy, Minor Threat, and DK. When I was a teenager I was really into surfer punk rock, (not really anymore) but my one of my favorite punk rock albums of all time is Heavy Petting Zoo.

Some classics of German punk rock (aka Deutschpunk):

Chaos Z - Duell der letzten (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E68I2Zo5iVo#)

Vorkriegsjugend - Vaterland (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd4Ox3NE5Mg#)

Schleim Keim - Kriege machen Menschen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OSf2ebWbQI#)

Russian punk rock: (corny video but still cool in a way)

Purgen-phylosophia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzKN-0gKLY0#)

This song pretty much summed up punk rock for me as a kid. I know it's not written by the Sex Pistols but(t) fuck it.

Sex Pistols - Schools Are Prisons (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeSJ9loxFgI#)

I'm aware that the Sex Pistols are a love-them-or-hate-them kind of band but to me they're fucking awesome despite all the bullshit that went down.

Back when Sirius first started - they used to have an hour on Sundays Nights on Ch. 26 "left of center" radio station with "the cosmic commander". they didn't even have a punk station or anything at the time.
I think another name he went by was Fat Harold, think he was from Philly. I think he was the hardcore movie.
I'd get blazed and write down all the tracks he'd play. He played really good shit I had never heard of.

Oh man, I can talk about punk for hours. First got into it back in the 7th grade and I've been a fan since.
I'm not really as into it as I was in middle school and all throughout my high school years (been more into 80s/90s indie rock and old school rap in the past few years), but I still find myself listening to all my old favorite punk albums all the damn time.

When it comes to punk I pretty much love it all, but I definitely like early 80s hardcore(Zero Boys, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, MDC, Reagan Youth, JFA, Articles of Faith, Dayglo Abortions, etc) and early/mid 90's punk the most (Crimpshrine, screeching weasel, Mr. T Experience, J Church, Gaunt, Sicko, Scared Of Chaka, Dillinger Four, Discount, Radon, Tiltwheel, Leatherface, etc). There were so many good bands that came out of the early/mid 90s that definitely got overlooked a lot.

Also, my favorite punk band of all time would probably have to be Jawbreaker, so I also love any Jawbreakerish sounding band.

I love Jawbreaker.

You'd like Rites of Spring a lot - don't know if you're into them. They have 2 members that went on to play in Fugazi and Ian MacKaye produced them. Just that weird post-hardcore sound that really rocks. The D.C. Scene has always brought on some really unique awesome sounds.

@The Nose Face, I tried getting into rites of spring years ago but could never get into them for some reason. Fugazi on the other hand are one of my favorite bands of all time. I actually dig a lot of the bands that came out of DC and a lot of the bands on discord records. I've been really into lungfish lately. Check em out if you haven't yet. Been really into the evens too; i wouldn't call them a punk band, but just about any music project that Ian Mccaye touches is bound to be pretty good.

After the Paris terrorist attack at that Eagles of Death Metal concert in 2015, a lot of artists (U2) cancelled their Paris dates, which is understandable. Stiff Little Fingers didn't, because it was exactly what "Alternative Ulster" was about: to try and create something despite civil unrest and terrorist killings. They said that when they were growing up in the Troubles, no one would come to play Northern Ireland, and they remembered what that was like, so they insisted on performing despite everything for the sake of the people who live there and continue on. Whether or not it was the right decision is another thing, but I really respect them standing by their beliefs and not forgetting where they came from.

how did I not know about this thread for so long?
I like lots of different genres of punk and have listened to blink (albeit Cheshire Cat-era) and Crass back to back.
I had a similar idea for a thread, but I might leave that one for later. Not too much new music gets me stoked these days (like cucktard though, I'm a die-hard propgandhi fan), but this popped up the other day and even though I've never heard of this band before it reminded me of all those years ago when I first heard really good melodic hardcore/ punk.

Punk was one of those things, an expression of human ingenuity and need that was going to happen regardless of any one person. Nobody invented it, it erupted time and time again.

Speed check some people challenge some cars.

Do pressure flips when people yell the kickflip thing see if they know?

This is the first tape I bought, at 13 years of age, on the recommendation of an older snowboarder.

I loved it, but got into hip-hop soon after. Returned to punk after I graduated high school (again, from the snowboard community) and stuck with it ever since.

Right Wing Pigeons is pretty timely right now too.

Glad to have seen these guys a few times.

https://youtu.be/ZxTSigDnQyM

One time was when I took my ex to her first punk show.  I watched her jaw drop as Chi took the stage and hucked a loogie into the crowd, a look that turned to horror as he did a 180 away from the stage, to be showered in spit from the crowd.

It was classic SNFU that night. Bags of puffed wheat thrown into the crowd, wiffle ball bats on fire, and probably Chi wearing his piggy liederhosen.

After the show he stood by the exit, shaking everyones hand, thanking them for coming.

Fucking punk.

Rest well, Chi Pig

i've been a fan since i was a young teen (i was born in 1971) and this song always makes me think of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0w-WNggnjQ

also, not sure you know about this video (it's old as shit), but TSOL is the soundtrack, and it's definitely part of the reason they are so indelibly ingrained in my psyche--if you can sit through the narrative/skits, the footage of DelMar (around 3:20) and "Terror at Tahoe" (around 15:30) is all stoke edited to TSOL songs:

I think my fave ALL track is "she's my ex", although I'm quite partial to breaking things and pummel as albums. probably like the decendents better but ALL don't really get enough credit for creating/ contributing so much to that squeaky clean/ well produced pop punk.
Actually just the other day I was reminiscing over this CD that I picked up in 2001:

Just wanted to follow up on this and say thanks for a recommendation but unfortunately time constraints are forcing us to go straight from Munich to Italy and we won’t have time for a Switzerland show. I would say Zurich but there are cool venues and squats in many cities all over the country. I have lost touch a bit but if you‘re really considering coming over here I could try and find out more.
[close]

Just wanted to follow up on this and say thanks for a recommendation but unfortunately time constraints are forcing us to go straight from Munich to Italy and we won’t have time for a Switzerland show. Damn shame but it’s hard to squeeze it all in in the amount of time you can get off work when you got a day job :(

Thanks for the update and have fun in Munich and Italy  8).

Was feeling nostalgic about bands I used to see in small-town Canada as a teen/uni student. SNFU, DOA, Dayglo Abortions, Chixdiggit, Knucklehead, Nomeansno/ Hanson Brothers, etc.

One of them was Ripcordz, had this on cassette and was always on in the car.

The mentioned above I SPY and Johnny Hobo and the freight trains have been on my list for a long time. Not so popular and deffinately underrated, but so fucking good!
Here is my favorite bulgarian punk band, that unfortunatley doesn't exist anymore. They are good friends of mine from the old skate generation that got me into the skate and punk scene here.

Off the top of my head -

Flipper - life (some anti hero vid)
Fang - landshark (another anti hero vid)
Minor threat - good guys don't wear white (someone's part in zero new blood)
The only ones - another girl another planet (garret hill in zero new blood)
Gray matter - burn no bridges (ali boulala in flip sorry)

Also nervous breakdown was also in jeff grosso's santa cruz streets on fire part.

zero new blood had such a good soundtrack, i'm fairly sure that minor threat song in that vid was what got me into punk/hardcore. Like listening to that song (which is tame by minor threat standards and then finding the rest of their stuff and just being like holy shit this is it)

An interesting look into the life of GG Allin.  Merle is an interesting guy.  He talks about the history of punk, and he has a great memory of the timeline.

I’m fucking obsessed with 88 fingers Louie at the moment, not that I didn’t ever not like them, but just rediscovering a lot of their shit!
Fuck, the bassist is so good!

The remastered Behind bars album is so good. I got to see 88 Fingers Louie at the Fireside bowl in Chicago almost 30 years ago with the Bollweevils.

yes, the remix is so good, I NEED to hunt it down on vinyl because the bass shines through so much better. I’m jealous you got to see them live, I slept on the for a few years, but recently they are honestly one of my faves! Dat split with kid dynamite mang, oh that’s juicy!!!
Isn’t the fireside their home turf? I have a few splits of them with the bollweevils.

Just came here to post about these guys.  Heard them for the first time this morning and I love it... definitely reminds me of french oi like Camera Silens, or later Blitz/Killing Joke/The Mob, etc... even early Amebix at times.  The dungeon synth and midieval imagery adds another level.  Best new band I've heard in a long time.  Ordered a t shirt and they aren't too far from me some hope I can catch them live soon.

I been listening to nothing but Heartbreakers lately.

If I could turn back time that would be the band I would try to join. I definitely could hang in any and all situations.

I probably would have gotten kicked out for being to much of a druggie.

They are 100 ground zero in my opinion. Over the Ramones. Just barely over the dolls. The dolls was a smidge too early obviously

Allegations of rape.

If it’s wasn’t true, I’d expect some kind of statement, but breaking up within a day of the info leaking makes it sound pretty serious.

I never dug anti-flag but hate that these types of accusations pop up so much in a “scene” that is ideologically opposed (or should be ideologically opposed) to this type of behavior….
Accusations aside, is anti-flag is the most juvenile/ elementary punk band name ever?

Rebellion was epic this year. Saw way more bands than normal. Bob Vylan was epic. The Meffs were great also, they packed the biggest room at 13h or something on the Thursday!
If you haven't been to Rebellion put it on your bucket list.

So it’s been a minute since I’ve seen a gig, and even longer since I saw some British punk.

I saw these guys the other night, great energy, but the sound was blown out and just too much noise for my aging ears.

But I caught glimpses if something underneath the noise, and checked it out.

Glad I did, it’s pretty tight
