back in the time arto was the big thing like immediately just cause 411 magazine said so (in so many words) and it dosnt work that way now. You could never truly say that any of the legends of skatings past would even get picked up in todays day and age.  Theres people that good now who wont ever get legit sponsorship. I saw him.  His skating stood out compleately, he killed it (b4 he got ko'd anyway) that was in vancouver. (he got a concussion at slam one year)

That being said, I have high hopes for Tristan Funkhouser. I have a hunch that little scrapper is gonna blow some minds before year's end.

damn thats really interesting.  like yeah i think if someone like Mickey Papa was out a while a go he coulda had a legit skateboarding pro "career" but dudes been on the scene for 5plus years with nothing really past flow/regional sponsors

Spanky and Andrew Pott really reminds me of Arto.  Also, for those who remember, there was that dude Rich Adler from the east coast who had striking similarities to him.

I get what your saying, but you couldn't be more completely wrong.

Arto was absolutely killing it at that time, especially for his age. He could nollie heelflip noseslide a handrail, fs flip stairs, and switch tre casually. You're forgetting that progression is a thing. This is like saying that Einstein is stupid in comparison to Stephan Hawkings, but without Einstein opening the gate by explaining how certain things are relative to each other, Stephen Hawkings would have no foundation to build upon and could possibly not have discovered that theory himself.

Not every kid could kickflip backlip the biggest rail at the skatepark back then. Even now days, you hardly see a rail skater being equally good as their ledge skating counterpart. Everyone has their niche, but at the time, he was progressing it all.

I don't normally say this but you people are completely fuckin batshit. Arto being recognized had more to do with his style than how gnarly he got. All of that came after hanging out with Geoff. Look at the difference between Bastien at 13 then skating with the Flip team. dude had a refined style for such his age
arto show (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I53OTCRrQ8I#)
so yeah. nobody so far

nah - it was always  the same  30 years or 10 years ago, you had super talented people who had a very short /poor or no career.
and on the other side people semi good/talented/ambitious who makes a pro skateboarding carreer based on character and network.

arto was a phenomenon he was traveling one summer through europe from town to town, from country to country - i was traveling this
year also across europe and meet  so many people crazy about that kid from norway.
he came out of nowhere was very young, super good, stylish and tough, handsome, charming and smart.
i meet him 3 times, in the beginning of the summer (montpellier/france) he was traveling on his own, later in the summer (bochum/germany) he was with ed templeton, at the end of the summer prag/czech he was with the flip crew.

someone like him woud make it in skateboarding anytime.

Do you ever feel
Like a plastic bag
Drifting through the wind
Wanting to start again

Do you ever feel
Feel so paper-thin
Like a house of cards
One blow from caving in

Do you ever feel
Already buried deep
Six feet under
Screams but no one seems to hear a thing

Do you know that there's
Still a chance for you
'Cause there's a spark in you
You just gotta

Ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on show them what you're worth
Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
You're gonna leave them all in awe

You don't have to feel
Like a waste of space
You're original
Cannot be replaced

If you only knew
What the future holds
After a hurricane
Comes a rainbow

Maybe the reason why
All the doors are closed
So you could open one
That leads you to the perfect road

Like a lightning bolt
Your heart will glow
And when it's time you know
You just gotta

Ignite the light
And let it shine
Just own the night
Like the Fourth of July

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on show them what you're worth
Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
You're gonna leave them all in awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
It's always been inside of you, you, you
And now it's time to let it through

'Cause baby, you're a firework
Come on show them what you're worth
Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
As you shoot across the sky

Baby, you're a firework
Come on let your colors burst
Make them go, "Oh, oh, oh"
You're gonna leave them all in awe

Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon
Boom, boom, boom
Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon

hmm many valid points     I mostly meant that back then cream generally rose to the top but now...  You could do or be what ever the fuk and still not get piked up, its happening while we speak.  People realize that theres enough talent out there and that the 'pro'skaters themselves need not be as an important part of the equation.  So would everyone fall over arto NOW?  If they felt like it, if they noticed him in todays gargontowan sized talent pool.  So yah prolly not

No one. Even if there was an equal parallel, Arto wouldn't have produced at the level he did without he and Rowley feeding off each other and getting introduced to someone creative and kind of tweaked like Ed Templeton. Trick-wise skateboarding is gnarlier than ever but in terms of a video, nothing is going to match that time in skating ever again. That era is over. Also good luck finding another 8 foot tall scando who doesn't look like a scarecrow on wood and wheels.

I kind of agree what i just read, that era is kind of over and Arto definitely earned Skater of the Year that year. It is cool that back then you kind of knew who was going to get it because they just slayed thrasher coverage.

So instead of thinking is the next Arto, i digress and think who is getting that much mag coverage as he did in what 2002? truth is i don't know thrasher is stupid now.

LOWCARD FOR LIFE NOW. Before i was Thrasher for life, glad i didn't get the flame tat haha!
