Title: Age Is But a Number
Post by: everythingisgreat on February 22, 2019, 06:14:11 AM
How old are your favorite skateboarders?

I always get shocked to realize a skateboarder is currently 42 years old

(I’m pretty sure Reynolds is 42? Born in 1977?)

How old does that make Gino Iannuci or Chico Brenes? Those guys were established in the early 90’s when Reynolds was a kid still...

How old is everybody?

26 going on 40

Most of my favorite skaters are around my age which is depressing.

R. Kelly and Aaliyah vibes.
it's funny, Reynolds didn't get fame til later but he's possibly older than Carroll and maybe the same age as Chico and some of them. Kelch was older, Rick Howard must be older [Blockhead was 89, right?].
most of the golden era pros are 41-44 now. Ricky Oyola and Puleo are a tad older.

My favorite skaters tend to be mid-twenties-ish. I like guys like Louie and Ishod who are good enough to skate everything and young enough make it look easy.

I just turned 34 and am basically just as good as I've ever been, as most pros my age have been falling off for a few years. I'm practically flow level by now.

Reynolds was from Florida. With so much of the industry based in Cali, a bunch of guys based in SF or So-Cal became pros pretty young. Carroll was 17 when Girl was started and had been pro for like 4 or 5 years at that point. No one ever expected this longevity. Carroll is two years older than Reynolds though, but Reynolds wasn't a big name until like 97, while at that point Carroll had been a big name pro for like 6 years. Chico is the same age as Reynolds.

I think Rickk was the oldest of the people who started Girl, and he was 19 or so.

One of the perks of being shitty is that there are still easy tricks to learn at the ripe age of 43. Put down some (shitty) bs big spins and fs 360 no complies for the first time last summer. In some ways, I’m getting better, in some ways, not.

I stopped skating at the age of 33 for 3 years due to being an idiot and doing drugs. When I got back on board I weighed 195. Bam issues. I got down to 130. I just turned 37 so I've been skating for the last eight months now and it's been really hard relearning tricks but I've gotten most back but some I'll never. Low-impact skating is the key.

Hold yer horses there chief.  If someones name is shit for brains and you perceive theyre actions as stupid, the descriptor your looking for is 'apt' and not ironic.  I cant read your mind as to guess at you were expecting, I can only go on your words.   ('Apt' - Suitable or appropriate in the circumstances)

If one researches the word irony you'll realize it has multiple definitions, ya fuckin high school dropouts.

You're not wrong, but it still doesn't make what you said previously, right due to none of the definitions supporting what you originally said haha. Maybe, " you are literally shit for brains" or "its beyond coincidence that you're name is shit for brains". As someone previously suggested " Shit for brains is an apt name"...or "your name is an apt description of you" I'd honestly use appropriate but it works either way.

I will say, there is irony in the fact that you still think you're right, regardless of looking up the definition. Even more so, you called someone pretentious and those who were correct high school dropouts. Though a small example, it's more surprising to me you completed HS, dipshit. Before you try to inflect whatever intelligence you think you might have, make sure you have a good understanding of said perceived knowledge you cunt.

Leo Romero is the same age Heath was when he retired.

Heath was only 32 when he retired?!?!

Yes. Pro skaters take note. I think Heath is the only intelligent pro skater to ever exist. He knew it wouldn't last forever, made the necessary investments early on to ensure a comfortable life after skating, and bowed out at the top of his game with dignity. Every pro should retire at 32. There's way too many pros anyways.
crazy. i thought he was at least like 36. his career was too short but then again he dipped out at the exact right time.  I still do think he had a lot more to offer still just my opinion.

Big fan of this dude. Works full time, family man, and 40 years old (in this video part) still jumping down some pretty big stuff just for the fun of it.

Much respect

That song was so inescapable when it came out but it worked so well

Would one say it is ironic that he is wearing a Highway Murderers shirt but is skating to African American gangster rap?

Well that is a bummer. I hadn't seen this part before and I was pretty hyped for a second there.

It is amazing that so many pros have rolled into middle-age and are still pro. However, as great as this is for them, I feel this is bad for the industry and the scene as a whole.

Natas will turn 50 next month. Has always been my favorite, and always will be.
