It's great to see some early 90's tricks done big and with a little style. The problem with that era wasn't the technical tricks, but the fact we were doing them at 2 miles an hour dressed like clowns.

That right there could be more future than past.

Then again, my reaction would be completely different if that were Tyrone Olson.

back in the day he did rail tricks no one was doing, hell not even now. then he goes into hiatus and lets all these rail kids shine and do their thing and then he makes his big comeback and yet still manages to do a fucking trick never been done on a rail, goddamnit mariano you are amazing.

oh shit, i forgot about that. that was pretty rad, and on a rail with a kink in the middle, no less. matt beach was so good, i still have the poster of the switch kickflip shifty off a bump that came with the transworld with his interview in it

still, if im remembering right, that was kinda a fat square rail situation. doing it on a round rail is a whole different thing

im really tired of reading bullshit like this. when did guy mariano ever do some "early 90s tricks" without style? the problem with every era is that crappy people are in videos, the 90s had some of the best skating there was. everything was being discovered then. you can diss it now because you are living on its coattails, but most little kids out now do not contribute style or originality to skateboarding in any of the ways these guys did. just watch questionable, trilogy, 20 shot sequence, and any h street video before lick and you will see an intensity and creativity in skateboarding that we have yet to see again. start thinking before you diss the 90s because chris fissel and the new deal crew did not represent the best of what was actually going on and most of the shit out now is garbage.
Title: Re: Guy Mariano
Post by: bothersome on September 03, 2007, 09:06:56 PM
I wouldn't be as harsh to use the word garbage, but uninspired is more along the lines.
A lot of stuff has been done and people kinda forget and then someone does something and it's new again.
The stuff Kareem,Gino,Dill,Creager,Daewon,Shiloh and others were doing was mind blowing based on what your average pro was doing.
They were breaking new ground daily and it was miles ahead of the rest of the pack, not to mention it looked amazing in comparison.

He single-handedly has the power to make me buy magazines or videos (alas not enough of the latter); I'll get the sidewalk just to see that!

I would love Mariano to be made skater of the year - he deserves it just for how highly he is regarded by anyone who knows good skateboarding when they see it

Check Koston or Ocean in Next Generation circa 91'.  There was definitely some good stuff in the 90's before the clown era.

I think early 90's ledge skating still has a lot to offer. Imagine if the tricks Guy did on the World ledge in Virtual Reality were done down handrails?

And yes, Noseslide Nosegrind down a handrail has the potential to be ugly in the wrong hands. But it has been left in the right hands.

Nah you've opened up a floodgate of memories now.

I remember it like yesterday. I came back from 'Nam only to discover my one true love in bed with the milkman. She said she thought I was dead and she needed love just like anyone else but all I saw was a white flash and next thing you know I'm standing in a room covered in blood. I was on the run for seven days before they caught me covered in blood and filth and cowering in a ditch. I was put before a strict and cruel judge. I was sentenced to life in Attica. My first day in the showers I felt a large hairy hand cover my mouth, press me up against the wall and whisper in my ear "can you take all nine?"....... After a month and a half in the infirmary I could walk again and the injuries were healed, but some scars never heal.

And there you've opened up that pandora's box of memories all over again.

Already then he did one trick on a handrail which has only been done on ledges, the switch noseslide flip out.

Yeah. I was also thinking about the Nollie to Backside Tailslide Kickflip out in the FTC video.

But even Henry Sanchez's tricks in Virtual. Fakie 5-0 to noseslide, Fakie Flip to Fakie tailslide, Frontside Half Cab Flip to Frontside Noseslide. Imagine someone doing those proper down a rail?

besides 'go extra fast and keep speed', orthodox combination grind theory has always gone something like 'keep the point of pressure the same', i.e. avoid shifting your weight entirely to the other side of the board (5-0 to nosegrind, crooked to lip, tailslide to noseslide, etc.). this applies to manuals too, attn joey brezinski and followers.

the skaters who were doing new in the 90's are still doing new. this current generation is just doing the old tricks bigger.  thats all just bigger and maybe going faster..but thats natural. progression trickwise however is still only being pushed by a few. thats why you have guys over 30 still pro cause the new young pros arent innovative enough to push them out of the market like the kostons and marianos did to the vallely's and tom knoxs of the early 90's late 80's.

Kids like sheckler
Pros like mariano

figure it out...

Tom Knoxes? There was only one and he is still pretty sick as a non/semi-pro. I always wanted that Minor Threat board.

Anyone have the mariano sequence of the switch back nosebluntslide on the brick bank? That's what did it in my mind for his upcoming part, to reappear and then just blow minds like mouse.

that trick fucking sucks... its in the same boat as "crook/backlip" its just a ugly looking trick..

but guy is guy and he is sick. but once again he did step up the ante by doing it on a rail , but its still a ugly trick

this ain't bastien and you ain't making a dime of sense. "but guy is sick". don't rationalize homey.
It's the backhanded compliment.
People don't realize it's a double negative
"he's sick and all but yeah that sucks"

Here's the sequence that Tyler posted earlier, it's backwards but still! DAMN!

Guy probably did the noseslide crook grind on tranquility rail "switch" for "fully flared".  He sure is making a comeback for not skating at his full potential the last 10 years.
