Facial recognition cameras and policing skate spots
« on: November 28, 2019, 01:08:20 AM »
So, how long before the wonderful technology from China starts policing their spots and automatically issues tickets (for lame tricks)? Would visiting skaters be added to their database at the airport and be fined before they depart?

I wondered/ asked something going in a similar direction in the thread about brain peacocks fellas part

Quote
but one thing i wondered: so he's american (of chinese decent most probably?) and moved to china? because with china having this social rating justice system (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/china-social-credit-system-explained; while i dont know wether it is common and used in the whole country) skateboarding must have negative impact on this rating system. i guess being american works as some kind of shield against any social penalties whatsoever? does anyone know if this rating system impacts the skate scenes in the (bigger) cities yet?

Would love to know if somebody could give some intel on the subject/ current situation.

this will only work until they finish developing the Style Recognition Algorithm© the Chinese have been working on for the last few years in collaboration with Kevin Harris. Poor Kalis would get alot of tickets that should actually be issued to john shanahan

So, how long before the wonderful technology from China starts policing their spots and automatically issues tickets (for lame tricks)? Would visiting skaters be added to their database at the airport and be fined before they depart?

Maybe not lame tricks, but there are systems in place to automatically fine people for jaywalking. The pattern recognition system could be modified to identify the act of skateboarding.

March 2018: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/china-police-facial-recognition-technology-ai-jaywalkers-fines-text-wechat-weibo-cctv-a8279531.html

Nov 2019:
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7664797/Chinas-facial-recognition-punishes-jaywalkers-putting-pictures-big-screens.html

You can cover your face, but if you go that far you might want to leave your phone behind. Police can subpoena telecommunications companies (TELCOs) for records of what devices were in a certain area at a certain time because our phones are always trying to connect to phone towers. The next step is asking the telcos where else they have seen that device. Finding out where a device spends 8 hours at night without moving is probably where the owner sleeps / lives.

Airplane mode stops your phone from connecting to cell phone towers, but there is Bluetooth Low energy (BLE) which is impossible to disable on the majority of phones. It's different than Bluetooth, which you can turn on and off. I assume someone out there is actively scanning and assembling all of the BLE identifiers (which are unique to every phone / device) into a massive database. Supermarkets use BLE to track customer's time spent in each aisle and how they walk through stores, so it's likely there is some security company capturing this data around properties they protect.

You can scan BLE yourself by downloading a BLE scanner app for your phone such BLE Lab pro ( https://apps.apple.com/us/app/ble-laboratory-pro/id1436021089 ) or NRF Connect ( https://apps.apple.com/us/app/nrf-connect/id1054362403 ). It's interesting to see how many and what types of devices are around you.
