Finishing up my final year at college and when i'm either at school or at work I'll often go on hiatus with skateboarding for months. How do you guys balance other stuff of your life with skating?

I have 2 degrees and a i work full time job in the tech field. How do I manage?
I just skate after work
-
I consider going on the Slap skating

It's pretty much the same way that you would fit anything else into your life. People find ways to fit in going to the gym, its the same type of shit.
-
Just go pro and you can skate forever.
-
This is actually a good question but also has a simple answer: everyone has a hobby. Video games, the gym, getting fucked up at the bar, bird watching or skateboarding.
You may have to cut into your other leisure activities and the way you skate may have to change but you can keep it going a couple times a week if you really want to.
As good as skating is, by your late 20’s you should be doing something a little better for your personal stability most of the time anyway. You just gotta find the balance. Don’t sweat it and enjoy embarking on a new phase of your life.
-
Get into skating bowls. You'll still be ok at it even if you can only skate like one day a week and when you start getting fat from sitting behind a desk for 40 hrs a week, it's actually an advantage because a dad gut helps you go faster on transition.
-
You don’t really...I’m about to turn 31 and I’ve noticed it’s getting harder to get out over the last 12/18 months. At some point you gotta realise that you can’t do it all the time anymore and have to ‘grow up’ in some regard...I’ll still always try to get out atleast once a week though. Don’t get me wrong I’ll never stop.
-
Talk shit on slap during board meetings like I do.
-
Instead of going to the bar, skate. Instead of going to the movies, skate. Instead of sitting on the couch, skate. Even if it's for 30 minutes, skate as much as possible. Cruiser run, thats skating. Some flat ground, thats skating. I've managed to hold down full time jobs, sometimes 2 jobs, going to school, the whole deal. If you want to skate bad enough you'll figure it out.
-
Get a job where you can take skate breaks. I really should be at work at 9am tomorrow but fuck it., I'm going to the park for an hour or so... b/c I'm the boss. Could mean answering a few emails and texts between slash grinds but so be it...
-
I like 9-5 jobs because my schedule is set and I can skate evenings and weekends. Like most things, you just gotta make time.
-
Honestly it blows that I can't be out there skating 6 hours a day. Also I live in the North East so there's about half the year where skating outside becomes rough as hell. But when it's nice out, I prioritize skateboarding over just about everything else, still usually get to skate like 3 or 4 times a week. I do programming for a living though so I'm hoping I can move towards remote / flexible hours and free up more time for skating (and music and art and all the other shit I've had to neglect).

Hyped to see an SB-C OG on Slap. Glad you're still skating dude.

Morning sessions are where it's at.
Your local park will be full of busy people who are getting their fix there. You won't come across any big egos at 9am either.
-
Schedule....skate by yourself.....check your weather app.....be flexible where and when you skate... prioritize.....
-
not sure what people my age do all the time if there not skating

I work a 40+ hour a week job; I just skate on my days off. Sometimes on both days, but always on at least one of those days. It's getting warmer out though so I'm gonna try to start going more during the week when I get off work.
-

Morning sessions are legit the best. Used to have them at 7 before school everyday. Nice and cool in the summer, park is almost always empty for you and your bros. You can decide to skip first period or just not go to school at all. Good times.
Before I became a crippled as bitch I would meet up with some buddies at like 9:30 PM and hit the skatepark up. We all worked in restaurants so we pretty much would all get off between 9-10. Like others have said you just gotta make time

I agree with this. I love waking up early and hitting my local park with a coffee on Saturday/Sunday.

You start skating less which makes you skate worse and then you start blaming your setup and buying a surplus of gear to solve your problems when deep down you know the true problem is your lack of time on the board.
.........or at least that's what I hear from a friend
-
Yeah it’s sucks entering that new phase in your life, but you’ll find a way. Just like all of us. If you do get worse at skating because of it (like me), just accept it and have fun for what it is and be thankful that you still have skating in your life. I don’t know if anyone mentioned it yet, but move closer to your job if you are able to. That way when you get home you can squeeze in an hour or two of skating and still have time to do other things ppl do after work.
-

I'm in the same position as you man. I got one more semester..
-
Have you considered teaching? I've been substitute teaching since I graduated two years ago, and I'm about to get my certification to become a real teacher. If you mainly work at high schools it will be just like skating after school back then. I have plenty of planning periods through out the day to accomplish work so I am usually pretty free after getting off. I know several teachers who skate most days out of the week. Also the health insurance is usually pretty good in most school systems.
-
28 years old with a 9-5 and bills and rent to pay, and i still manage to skate every day. it isnt hard.
-
just skate in the evenings/ weekends or even on holidays and try to skate more "consciously" as in plan a day where you want to go a certain spot with a certain idea with your crew and do it, instead of just wasting your time at a skatepark. use the time you have to actually skate and not to flex or lifestyle or any other skateboarding associated bullshit
i usually get way more motivated when i skate less (as in 1-3 times a week). During my university years it would be like 4-6 times a week in the summertime and i would get kind of bored actually and would skate worse
-
I just drink way too much and can barely make it to my job, I’m smack dab in my mid 20s and don’t have a girlfriend, kids or any of that dumb bullshit, and I haven’t skated in at least 6 months, I’m blowing it. But I text my sk8r friends like “hey let’s skate” and they don’t wanna, then I text my normal friends about wanting to go Skate and they’re like “so?”. But then sometimes I get texts from both groups, they’re tryna chill and I gotta lowkey be like “Dude, yeah Im at my apt, thinking about shit, I seriously need help, I honestly think I might die if I just stop drinking cold turkey, it’s a legitimate possability, idk what to do, I’ve done this rehab shit twice already and I live in Louisville and I’m scared shitless and have gotten chubby so Idk what to do, I want a ‘real’ career and a ‘real’ life and I can’t seem to learn or find a way out of this no matter how hard I try and it’s terrible, I can’t get out of my own way and idk why...”
then I get some disgusting response, completely dismissing anything I said, some dipshit detailing the bathroom habits of his child as if it’s a joke, and that’s fine but leaves me holding my heart in my throat, pissed off and terrified wondering if I’ll ever be capable of caring about something that much.
So yes. Do this and you can balancev skating and work or something what was the question? Fuuuhhhcckkkkkking rip ride and die fool
you gotta keep trying, man. im sorry your friends sound like they don't give a shit and maybe they're shitty friends. if thats the case, you might have to find a new support system. try a different kind of rehab. i dont personally know the answer, but there are ways you can beat this and get on the path to the life you want. you just gotta keep trying. lots of sober pals on here who will attest that its worth the struggle to get clean.
-
I fuckin suck at skating and my shit body doesn't let me jump for more than a few hours 2x a week, but...
If I were good at skating with my current life, then I'd say that balancing a 9-5 with the board is pretty manageable. I work in a lab so I can't really step away during the day, but there's plenty of time left when you go home (assuming you're able to step in the door at around 6-7 pm) and unlike school life, you actually have weekends free from studying, schoolwork, etc. Your other activities/hobbies will have to take a back seat though, but I like to remember that my peers are spending their free time watching TV shows/going to the gym, so we're not that much different.
However, I'd say the biggest change from school to work is that you're gonna feel fuckin drained coming home on the weekdays for at least a few months, regardless of how much/little you did during the day. Keeping up appearances for 8 hours takes a toll, but you get used to it.

Go to rehab again, do the steps when you get out, don't ever drink again. It will be hard work but watch how quickly the extra weight falls off, you start moving up at your job, you become more appealing to girls, all the time you spent drinking or being hungover can now be spent skating, etc.
-

Skate on the weekend
-
Don't have kids.
Straight up.
If you don't have kids but have a job you just have to prioritize shit. Find a night spot and get it in after work. Try to link up with other people who have M-F jobs and go out all weekend. Don't waste your time at bars / hungover.
-
I disagree that skating less means skating worse. If you laid a good foundation in your teens and twenties, I don't think you need to skate every day to keep it up. Its sounds corny but attitude counts for a lot. I found myself progressing again in my mid 30s b/c I just skated when I wanted to and how I wanted to without forcing anything. If a trick wasn't coming my way, I'd move on to something that was. Believe it or not I learned a lot of stuff that way. My early 20s were a dark time in my life and really stagnant in my skateboarding. My 30s were pretty great and 40s, so far so good...
-
It's not hard, you just have to take it seriously.
Consciously carve out time from your schedule to go skate, regardless of when or where. You'd be surprised how much that boosts your confidence and consistency. Muscle memory is important as you grow older. I skate only once or twice a week now, but I'd say I'm more consistent at 27 than I was when I was 20.
Skating with friends is obviously ideal, but if your group isn't as dedicated as you do, come to terms with skating alone every now and then.
I'd recommend doing something else to keep active and keep you satisfied beyond skateboarding. Living in NYC, I try to bike any day I'm not planning on skating. Creative pursuits are also a nice break from skateboarding.
I gave up smoking and drinking a few years back to deal with some health issues, and my skating (and mental outlook) drastically improved with that lifestyle choice. With that being said, I know plenty of dudes skating at a higher level than me who get fucked up on a very regular basis, so do what works for you.
Also, don't feel bad about getting a little burnt out from time-to-time. At the end of the day, this is still a hobby, and if it's not fun for whatever reason, pushing it won't help at all.
-
I'm 36 and recently stopped caring about my career because it was going well and I guess I don't want that anymore? No kids is the big one. Fuck that shit.
I built a box a few weeks ago and have already started skating like two or three times as much as I was. I just take that shit to a nearby parking lot when I have some time to spare and I'm solid gold. Even 45 minutes when I can sneak it makes a huuuge difference on "real" skate days. I'm way more comfortable on my board and am not starting from scratch every time. It's all the time investment.
-
come to terms with skating alone
-
I skated more after finishing university. Working shit jobs while going to school full-time left little time for skating. Now that I have a career, I just skate after work most days. One can do a lot of skateboarding in an hour or two.
-
If you want to skate, you WILL skate.
For the first few years into my career I mostly kept to myself skatewise, lots of solo missions. Skate with a bunch of people now and one thing you do notice is skaters with jobs versus skaters with careers. The former are constantly broke, unorganized, sleep til 3 pm, etc. if it wasn't for skating you'd have nothing in common. But alas, one of the best social aspects of skating is that all walls- racial, class, status- are all broken down for this ridiculous activity we all adore.
-
i probably skated more in my 20s than in my teens. at the time i worked 12 hour shifts, 4 days one week, 3 days the next. at least once a week i would skate with a coworker before going to work and then on the 3-4 day weekend we would usually travel to skate the entire time.
sure when i was younger and not working i probably had more time on the board but in my 20s i was actually doing way more because i had the means to go places.
now im 40 and have a job where i can skate everyday if i want to but physically thats tough for me. i dont have kids though which is probably the biggest reason why older guys cant skate.
-

Only partially true. Plenty of planning periods throughout the day? Where the fuck do you work? I literally have to treat my day like I have no planning periods, because despite having one, more than half of my days I have to do what is called "period subbing" to make up for missing teachers and a shortage of subs. Along with that, even if I don't have to period sub, the amount of work I have to do means that I take home and work on a bunch of things every single day.
Summers are fucking sick though, aside from the fact that none of the rest of your adult skate friends will be off.
The issue with getting older is "how important is skateboarding to you?" If its important, schedule it in, make time for it.
Another thing is not to be dependent on friends to go skating. Obviously skating with friends is great, but a lot of times during the week, due to time constraints, I'll just go straight to a spot or skate park just to get some time in before the sun goes down.
Also, don't drink much. So many of my friends have completely fallen off due to their excessive drinking. Not only do hangovers and time spent at bars cut into your skate time, but as you get older, hangovers get worse, and skating with one gets harder.
A bonus nobody is telling you about is the adult sleep schedule. When you are up 5 days a week before 7 am and don't need that teenage amount of sleep, you can wake up saturday morning at 8 am feeling rested. This makes the skateable (aka sunny) part of the day longer, giving you more time to skate and get anything else done.
One other huge thing: skate when you are tired from work if you aren't doing manual labor. When my brain is fried from work, one of the most refreshing things for me is to get myself on the board just pushing. Just getting out in the sun, doing something physical, distracting myself from the stress of life and getting into a different mental place is so fucking therapeutic and leaves me feeling energized and more able to get through the work week. So make sure you find that time, because believe it or not, it will benefit your career life too.
-
I skate in my living room while other people are talking on conference calls just so my legs dont go stale again. Please realize that you will be working for the rest of your life and factor in what else is important in life and squeeze that shit in too. Getting old is a slippery slope, with jobs\careers being a wind at your back.
-
I work in film and do 12 hour days Monday to Friday with overtime every so often and one weekend day work here and there and still manage to skate. It’s tough and it doesn’t feel as good as it used to but it’s still fun and a good way to keep in touch with people.
-

I would definitely try rehab again. And even though I'm not personally a fan of AA I would seriously consider doing it and finding a sponsor. I know there are AA groups for athiests now if you don't relieve in God. But if you actually commit to working the steps it will greatly help you. I have quite a few friends that finally got and stayed clean because they took AA seriously. There's even AA groups online you can do if it's hard for you to get to meetings or if you're worried about going to them the online meetings are a good place to start.
I really hope you can turn things around man. Addiction fucking sucks and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.
-
for me the hardest thing about skating as i got older was just that it was no longer the default go to. before i moved out on my own, whenever i got home the first thing i would do is get by board and go push around in my neighborhood and see who was around. even if if was just skating a shitty 4 ft long curb it didnt matter because it was more about hanging out. now im in a situation where i have to actually go somewhere if i want to skate. i cant just leave my front door and easily have something to skate. im hoping to rectify that this summer by pouring cement in my backyard.
-
Its tough to transition into solo skating, I haven't had a friend that skates in like 10 years, but now its just like a part of my soul instead of an activity. I'm fine with pushing to the store once a month, that's all I need. I just treat it as a toy rather than a thing I use to show of my skill. Its totally okay to loose tricks.
-
I work a 9-5 and private tutor on the side - mostly I skate in the mornings during the week. Better for Texas anyway with all the heat
-
For those saying you skate less because of kids...well how about you skate with your kids.
-
skate once a year, make it count.
-
9-5 skate after work. by the time i get to the park (6/6:30) between the people my age who skate and the new gen its a solid chance there'll be someone to skate with. also if you have a day off make plans well in advance as skateboarders are some of the most inconsistent people i've met when it comes to sticking to plans/times. takes alot more effort nowadays to get a good group of people together for a session but it pays off.
-
whatever you do, just remember to keep dem hands down, fam
-
For those saying you skate less because of kids...well how about you skate with your kids.
mine is really close to picking it up, but he just hasnt yet. he can ride his board, but he gets bored very quickly and just wants to play tag or some other six-year-old game. ive only taken him to a park once and he rolled around on the ramps for a few minutes then wanted me to film him doing parkor. we were the only ones there so i let him climb around but im worried to take him to a half way crowded park because i dont think he will understand that the skatepark is not a playground. how do you tell a kid there is only one way that you're allowed to have fun at a certain place?
were finally getting nice weather though so the plan is to work on it on saturday mornings while my wife is at work and hopefully the park is empty.

Hell yeah. Hope the session goes without incident.
I feel like "skating with your kids" isn't a solution to this problem though, as youre probably worried about them getting hurt/being in the way the whole time youre trying to skate. Cant really try your trick when your mind isn't fully on it.
Not saying skating with your kids is a bad idea, but the session wont be all about you and what you want to do anymore. It's a non-selfish session that probably wont go at the pace you would like it to.
-
Skate when you can. Even if your burnt out from work throughout the week, just roll weekends or whatever satisfys.
-
To be honest it is easier to find a balance between work and skateboarding than girlfriend and skateboarding...
Ahhh dude this is tough. Most girls have been chill when i go out skating but some have been really lame, they dont look at it as me skating and doing something i love, they lump it in with "hanging with your friends over me" its like we are friends who skate, we arent just crushing beers at the bar or something.
-
I’m 23 work 40+ hours a week, play in a gigging band that practices 3 times a week and have a wife and kid at home. I still manage to skate 2-3 times a week.
Sometimes instead of sleeping I skate. When I go to work I’ll park a mile away and skate there instead of parking close by. I’m still learning new tricks. You can still do it too.
-
"it's ok to be a weekend warrior," i keep telling myself
-
Get a cruiser and take it places. I used to do the park far from work and skate thing, too.
I'm 30, moved from Tampa to NYC (no skate friends up here), married, career. Skating is nice to think about, but fitting it in is tough.
^^^Those are my excuses. In reality, I've hardly made an effort. Plenty of parks, plenty of spots. I'm just fucking lazy and my knees don't work like they used to. So if I do go skate, I suck, and it'll be at least a week before my body lets me do it again.
I agree with so many posts before this: You just have to decide how much you want to do it, and then make it happen.
-
the older i got the more self conscious i get about getting run out of spots. very rarely am i willing to go anywhere that i may have to run from cops or deal with security guards. its weird when guards or whoever are like "arent you a little old for this?" At the same time you definitely get a little more leeway when it comes to getting kicked out.
-
Just go to the same skatepark one time a week for an hour and don't ever fall
-
i'm 39, married for 10 years, baby on the way, full time IT job.
If you really want to skate, you can skate. If you make excuses, you must not really want it.
-
My two year old is obsessed with my leaf blower. I just make sure it's fully charged up and we hit up the driveway together. Funbox, small quarter, flat. Every once in a while I'll bomb a hill that leads to a couple of decent street spots downtown. I've been able to maintain a decent level of comfort on the board with this even with long hours (tech), travel, family, etc. Just fit it in, doesn't have to be a 6 hour session to be fun.
-
Generally skate 1-2 times a week. No hiatus. Sometimes if everything sucks I go 3 weeks or a
month without skating but that’s just if I have bad luck and it keeps raining/snowing on my off days.
-
Instead of going to the bar, skate.

That's exactly that.
"You should live with your skate friends instead of me"
-
I'm 34 and better than I was as a kid, which isn't saying much but it's at least another small example of the progression that's possible as a middle aged person.
I was a HS english teacher for the past 8 years and skated after work and on weekends.
Agree with everyone who mentioned being ok with skating alone. Though, I must say that I've met a ton of people skating - including people my age - and definitely like to skate in a social atmosphere. The more I hit up consistent spots - parks, plazas, etc - the more I meet people who become skate homies. This definitely helps keep the stoke alive and the learning moving forward.
Just prioritize skating as you might going to gym, as people have mentioned.
-
you'll need to skate alone, because skating with many friends you are very likely going to get sidetracked by chatting too much. since your sessions may happen once a week only, you need to skate hard to keep skating at the current level. when you start slipping, skating will become less fun and getting back on track can be very hard
also, try to schedule at least one session on a particular day or just per week, so that you SO knows when you'll be gone. if you don't have the luxury, do some basic sport activities like jogging or cycling for 30 mins a few times per week - STAYING IN SHAPE IS THE HARD PART, YOUR FEET WILL REMEMBER HOW TO DO TRICKS
skateboarders in their 20ties skate pretty much everyday and consume shit and neglect their bodies and are still in great shape. but once your sessions dwindle down to one or a few times per week, that shit will catch up with you fast
-
If your girlfriend has an issue with you going skating, hanging out with your friends, or generally doing things that don't involve her you should dump her.
-
once you have shared responsibilities, you need to put some effort in planing, unless you spend you whole time off-work being catered-to

I work in Montgomery County Maryland, we have it pretty good here. Pay is extraordinary, period subbing is very rare, you never have to do any sort of lunch duty. I'm currently a long term substitute for the entire semester for a high school social studies teacher who is very sick with cancer. I work 5/8 periods every day so if I use my time well I have plenty of time to plan. Also since I'm a substitute I usually am excused from the "team meetings," with all the other teachers. Obviously there are still some things that I have to bring home, but I can skate for a few hours immediately after work before attending to those things. There's a skatepark in-between my school and my apartment. I know when I get hired as an actual teacher after my certification it will be a lot different than my current situation. Teaching still seems better for finding skate time than some of my friend's careers though.

If your girlfriend has an issue with you going skating, hanging out with your friends, or generally doing things that don't involve her you should dump her.
I'm sure these perfect "cool" chicks exist in the wild somewhere, but I can't help but be curious about your current relationship status.

I'm fresh out of uni. Currently pushing away responsibilities (not looking for jobs) for this specific issue. I'm in engineering and my mates already working tell me it's fucked. Most work M-F 9-19.
For now I'm trying to build a mindset where I'll force myself to go out and skate even when fried-brain/insomnia would keep me from it. If you don't feel like being around people go to the isolated spot, things then change.
Quitting weed/alcohol/shitty people was also so beneficial for the brain.
Maybe start with a part-time and build from it. For the dude who suggested teaching, lots of people told me that as well.

40+ club hit it every day after work . helps that both my kids skate , we have a half pipe in the garage and rails and a bank in the backyard.
Just keep moving . once you stop your done

I got lucky because my girlfriend really "gets it." Not only does she not mind if I go skating, she encourages me to do it because she knows that its good for my soul. If I'm stressed out from work or some other aspect of my life she'll tell me to go skate and work out the stress, and is a great confidant when I complain about my other friends whose lame ass possessive girlfriends won't let them go skating. When we go on a trip, she'll tell me to pack my board in case there is something I want to skate where we are going. The interesting thing is it puts the pressure on me to balance things myself. Anytime I skate, she'll be down, but obviously I don't want to take advantage of that or ignore her for my skateboard, so it puts the obligation of balancing my time between her and my skateboard on me. So I still have to figure out the balance, which definitely is tough, but I don't have to deal with her cutting into my skating or guilting me for it...she was smart enough to figure out a way to make me do that to myself.
I have a couple friends who are clearly in the opposite position right now that have basically quit, and it fucking sucks. They pretend like their girlfriends' possessiveness is actually love, like "if your girlfriend actually loved you she'd want to spend time with you instead of you skating too!" which is insanely immature for a 30+ year old to say, especially because if a girl really loves you she'd accept the things that separate you but make you who you are, but I let it slide because I get the perspective they are coming from. At this point those guys are cut from the Saturday morning skate plans group text though until they can figure out the balance.

Married here, I can confirm you should dump girls that have issues with you having and enjoying hobbies.

Sessions turn into 1-2 hours instead of 5+ hours. I hit less spots now, more parks. I try less new stuff now, I have more to lose if I get hurt.

Married, no kids. My wife tells me to go skate all the time. She likes it when I come home happy and tired. Never once has she complained about me skating or any other activity I do outside of the house.

I’m kinda the opposite. I’m 30, working full time. I like to try to push myself to film new tricks I haven’t done before. I have limited time for skating so a skatepark seems like a waste of time and I almost never skate them. Warm up on flat then hit the streets. And that may well be my only skate day that week so skate for as many hours as I can before I tire out. Low impact. After work sesh might be short though because I’m already tired.
Whatever is fun for you though. I kinda miss aimlessly fuckin around in skateparks but I skate like I’m on a mission. Progression is what makes it fun for me.
Trying to sync up schedules with the few other homies who work and still skate sucks too so skating alone is often a thing. If it’s my day off I’m not waiting around for people if no one wants to skate. Sucks because I like to film tricks and my self cam footy is probably wack.

As long as you aren't shirking an actual responsibility to skate/do whatever your significant other shouldn't give a shit. Different interests are great for relationships. Working a 9-5 and trying to skate only gets rough in winter months.
-
Generally skate 3 times a week due to job, wife, kid, knees (42). Usually I wait until 9 pm and skate the elementary school around the corner. The more rusty I get , the more I prefer to skate at night, alone! It also became this way, as I moved away for 5 years and my whole "crew" pretty much quit or moved away. This past year my longest skate friend died unexpectedly at 40. Skated with that guy since 1987 (11 years old). The loss of my longest pal still has me pretty shook cuz that reality that we will never skate together again is hard. Skated with him more tgan anyone else. I also like to be out at night cuz it's cooler and when I'm taking a break I can just think about life or whatever.
-
don't commit to any relationship that lasts more than a few months and make a conscious effort to hop from basic minimum wage job to basic minimum wage job. you can skate all you want until your early/mid 30s then realise your a fucking loser.
but not just any fucking loser. you're a fucking lonely loser with no money.

ive been with my wife for 20 years. right from the beginning we tried to be realistic on who we are and how we werent expecting either side to change. ive never understood people that have relationships where they are expected to change once they get married or whatever. the way we looked at is we liked each other for who we are not who we could be. expecting someone to change their interests or hobbies for them is a disaster waiting to happen.
i can understand how having kids can fuck with this but fortunately im not in that situation.

Skateboarding is often a spicy subject between my girl and I because I skate almost everyday after work and on weekends too.
In the end she is just bored because when I'm not skating I'm tired, editing videos, watching skate videos, or chilling at the skateshop...
I often let her alone at home for a week while I'm on a trip with my friends to skate/film.
So yeah, maybe I should just spend more time with her if I don't want to end alone in my bed...

Yes, exactly. She warned me several times already...
To get back to the topic, I'm working full-time as a mechanical engineer, but I don't have any fix hour to come and leave, so I can come early if I want to skate after work, or skate during the lunch break in winter.
I travel to Spain every two months for work and managed to take my board with me lately so that's very cool.
At the end of the day I'm not tired because my job is almost 100% seated in front of a computer, but sometime being so static just break my body and I feel like a piece of wood. I'm considering taking a Yoga class to improve that a be able to skate more...

For those saying you skate less because of kids...well how about you skate with your kids.
The kid is 2 years old so that's not an option, the world is one big playground to him... Could do about one flatground trick then immediately step off the board because he's runnin away somewhere and will get hurt. He most likely pooped himself too so then I gotta go change him which kinda ruins the flow.
For a bit of years in my 20's I worked for the Forest Service up in Big Bear as a wildland firefighter. It was barely any classes and the physical test wasn't bad. Next thing I knew I had a job for the next 6 months. They were tiresome 12 hour days (at least) but also a lot of time just makin money for doing nothing as well. Hell, it took the bus about an hour from Victorville to Big Bear everyday and back and we were still on the clock gettin paid. Another half hour drive till I got home and I would skate the parking lot ledges and bumps at my local supermarket parking lot solo in the dark. It kept my skate muscles good for whenever I would take breaks or have a few days off I would go out to LA and have fun. Every job lasted 2 weeks so if I got burnt out on it I wouldn't go for two weeks and just sell weed to make up for it.
After six months of work was over all the fire dudes went out and bought new trucks and new toys or whatever. Come back next season and everyones showin them off. I on the other hand went out and skated/couch surfed/lived outta my car/went to a lot of shows/did whatever I wanted and it was alot of fun.
Just also wanted to say I'm 35 and landed my first noseblunt pop out in the middle of a ledge drunk as hell the other day. Even did a few more that session... There's still time to progress and have fun, u just gotta want it.

This is one thing I'm gonna make sure of after I get my foot fixed at the end of the summer. When I'm finally recovered I'm not taking skateboarding for granted. Considering I'm gonna be taking 6 classes at my university next semester, I'm gonna need my stress reliever, and I'm gonna make time to skate during the week. I've got a group chat of homies around the city that are down to skate all the time, so I'm definitely gonna take advantage of it. I feel bad for not skating as often as I used to, but I was getting used to getting back into full-time college mode, but now that I'm used to the scheduling and stress, I'm gonna get back into it full force.
Also Ronald Reagan your girl is cool as fuck, sir. I got a homie whose wife isn't really down for skateboarding but we usually convince her to let him go for a couple of hours during the weekend. Dude needs it considering his developing anxiety problems and terrible work hours.
-
I balance it like a nose wheelie
-
My two year old is obsessed with my leaf blower.
It's wildly impressive that your two year old can skate a leaf blower.
-
I'm gonna guess at least half of chicks who give a guy a hard time for skating would do that no matter what the guy is doing.....what's shocking is how many guys for some reason have to be with a girl like that.....it's actually a pretty common pattern...
-

I learned a long time ago to date girls with hobbies, that way there aren't issues with time spent together. My wife gets it,and is cool with it...I skate a lot more now too. Work is great because I have a perfectly rub bricked curb with hella lacquer on it to skate on lunch or after work. I'm a sheet metal fabricator, so being sweaty and all that shit doesn't matter. My friend is in school, has two kids,a wife, and works while making time to skate once a week to keep his sanity. Make the time.
-
My fiance is very cool and 90% of the time loves that I skate. Only once did she say some shit like “I feel like all you care about it skateboarding” because I was prioritizing it over some shit she wanted me to do. If it’s all I cared about I would probably do it more than twice a week lol stfu.
-
But yea you don’t wanna be with a chick who gives you shit for going skating. If you’ve got your shit together in other aspects of life and spend time with her etc she shouldn’t be complaining.
-
I just graduated my first degree at the end of April, and as people have said, just make time for it and make it a priority. Even if I just go out for a smoke while at home doing other things ill ride around for 5 minutes, when ever I can I get on my board, my work is a 10 minute skate away from the biggest skatepark in the city so I plan to hit it as often as possible once I'm done work for the day.

i'm 45, married with 3 kids and run a small business and it's kind of sucked for me last two years but i'm currently on an up swing. i've never really filmed but lately i've been trying to self film some things or homie film and it's really helped me a lot to find motivation. maybe it's the wrong reason to get motivated but it kind of gives me a project and something to strive for and motivation for trying to learn something new so i can get a clip.
my decline honestly started when i quit smoking weed like 5 or so years back. i went from skating 4-6 times a week for 2 hours a pop to 1-2 times a week for 30 mins to 1.5 hours. i just get over it and bored way quicker when i'm not faded and want to move onto something else. also, my wife used to get mad if i would come home too blasted so i skated long enough to skate off my buzz. i guess it's kind of like video games, i used to play some but never touch them anymore cause i'm never faded with time to kill.
skating mornings is huge. i've tried after work and these days i'm never feeling it when i go at end of day. lately i've been driving to the skate park in the morning when i'm on calls and then i get a session and will jump back in my truck and work some more and then skate some more.
it's been said a few times, it's just priorities and unless you want you life to be nothing but skating it will unfortunately become more exercise and hobby and less lifestyle.
also just skating more parks and finding one you like the vibe at goes a long ways as you can go solo and just skate with the park homies you make over time.

Barley skate then act like your are going to skate a ton this year with the few people that still skate because everyone else quit.

Ditch your responsible career bro friends and continue hanging with the derelicts at the skatepark.

Well, my job is extremely physically demanding, so aside from the usual time constraints, I have to be really careful to sleep well, eat well and take enough recovery time on my days off. If I don’t do that stuff I get super burnt out really quickly and my body gets busted up.
Also have to make sure that I don’t cross a line with the stuff I try on a skateboard. Small injuries are no big deal but big injuries will cause some huge problems for my work life.
-
I fucking love being childless. It's seriously the best thing for my responsibly selfish life. You will always find time to skate and do anything else you want to do in your short life, without kids. Every single time I see people with kids, I thank my lucky stars I don't have them.
-
I don’t skate as much as I’d like to, but I still skate. I am curious if there are any other active duty slap pals out there? Between working full time, taking a couple classes, having a toddler and another on the way, I still have a slither if time to ride my skateboard. I don’t skate any extravagant spots or anything, mostly flat in my driveway while my daughter plays. I still love it.
-
Best option (from experience) is waking up early as fuck and hitting your favourite spot/park/whatever. Get up at 4:30 and get in a good session before you head out to work. Yeah it's regular but if you really want to get time in to skate, you'll find a way.
I second building a box ledge or a ramp, if you have a smooth driveway all the better to just skate at home.
You could also join the 40+ curb union. Empty parking lots abound after dark.

I am 27, engaged, work 10 hour overnight shifts, and sorta always have a pretty busy schedule. My designated time to skate is 8 am- 10 am Saturday and Sunday. I get other times here and there in the week but not too much because it can vary. Every once in a while I get a whole Saturday and do a small skate day trip with some of my buddies. Sometimes, we plan a skate trip for a long weekend (Like once or so a year). Honestly you'll be able to find time. I didn't get to skate much at all during college. I skate more now.
